- It's that time of year! Time to get the Christmas tree farm ready! In this video, we prune and cull trees, set up signage, and explain how we run our little homestead Christmas tree farm here at Fall Line Ridge.

My great-great-uncle Edgar Ronnie, said for the first month after planting seedlings he would go to his tree orchard after dinner and correct any trees that shifted in soil. My great-great aunt Lottie Elenor would pick up the empty moonshine bottles he left around the orchard. They called their tree farm, Moonshine Meadows Christmas Trees. 👍👍👍
My grandfather has been selling Christmas trees since the 1950s. I’m excited to take over the family business and expand operations

Just thought I'd mention, out where I am I regularly pay at least $10 (usually $20 now) for a bundle of assorted "greens" (aka, the cutoff branches from the base of the trees) every Christmas season, to use in decorating my house. It would be a possible use for those "reject" trees that you'd otherwise throw on the burn pile.
Your precious little son is always the star of the show Wes. I think $50 is a very reasonable price for your fresh Christmas Trees. Thanks again for a great video.
My wife’s uncle had a tree
farm. I helped him with the farm during his later years. He used a long knife to trim the trees. The knife was thin and razor sharp. I sharpened the knives for him. He could clean up a tree in a few swipes. He also cut his trees with a bow saw. He avoided machinery if possible. He had a tree baler and a tree wrapping machine. I used to maintain them for him. The tree shaker was always a source of work. I rebuilt it a couple of times. It tried to shake itself apart. I still have his old walk behind brush hog. I think it is as old as I am. I just put a new engine on it a decade ago. It’s a nice machine. Thank you for taking me down the way back machine. You have a wonderful family. Best wishes,

Christmas trees were my Grandad's most sucessfull crop. They grew scotch pine - doug fir - white fir - grand fir -Nobel Fir, with Nobel firs being the highest dollar tree. When Grandad checked out he an his brother had 250 K of them. I remember helping to plant them in January-Febuary with snot dripin out of my nose in the cold weather. Took about 6-8 years to grow a saleable tree, scotch pine a little less. I understand the amount of effort it takes for you to raise a saleable tree. Was fun going down memory lane watchin your video. Hope you & your family have a good Holiday season.

I've always wanted a Christmas tree farm. One thing in our area is Christmas greens for decorating. One place we've gotten trees cuts the branches from the culls and bundles them and sells them for decorating. Great video as always!

That's a real nice Christmas tree Wes. Too bad you can't dig up those trash trees and sell them as living shrubs or one could make wreaths from them instead of just putting them on the compost pile. Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Great video thumbs up.

hey, Wes, now you've dug out the 4 post holes for your Xmas tree signs, you could put 4 short sections of plastic pipe into the ground for the posts to re-use the signs next year.

Great video Wes. The one thing I take exception to is the term "going South". The inference is going South is bad. As a born Southerner I have never cared for that term. If you are going to use a term to indicate something went wrong, I prefer "going North". Born American, Southern by the grace of God.
May have sold the limbs for greenery off the crooked trees cut down. Just a thought. We enjoy your videos
New to your channel, but in Florida people will pay $10-20 for a bundle of your cull trees for wreaths , keep up the good work, also loved the pig butchering
I'm not sure if anyone does what we used to do what we did in our family when I was a kid. We used a large container to set the tree in. Centered the tree and placed large rocks around the base. Helped to weigh it down and also could center those types of trees you cut as bad. But we didnt have alot and a tree holder wasnt something we had nor needed. Just a thought for you.

The split tree truck xmas tree could of still been used for outside tree decorations that way you dont waste the tree and you could have sold them a discount price

In the Pacific NW we have douglas fir, grands and noble fir. There are so many Christmas tree farms around here it's ridiculous. Most of the Christmas trees that are harvested are shipped to other states and countries.

I like colored lights, my wife likes clear ones, we alternate years on the lights. This year is her year.
@@falllineridge - If you can add a dimmer to the clear ones, it adds a whole new dimension. I buy a normal wall dimmer and solder it into an extension cord... easy peasy!
I like getting an "ugly" tree and teaching my grandsons that we can fix it up and love a tree that's not perfect.

We got a tree a few years ago and from the front it was it was good. But the back was bad so we got a discount and put the bad again the wall and nobody knew any different.
Nice looking trees - and the last Christmas tree we bought was $65.00 = If you have electric out there with the trees - decorate one real pretty - great for catching peoples eye as they drive by.

Seems to me that you could make evergreen garlands or grave blankets out of those trees you cut down, or even sell the branches for holiday greenery,
Not to knock you. But I think it's very interesting that your trees are not all trimmed up ready to go. It's like going to buy a car in a car lot and they have to put the tires on ,Before you can buy it.

Take those defect trees and place them by the sign at the road. More of an attraction then just the sign. If someone takes them oh well 😂

Talking about types of trees, just a suggestion, “Carolina sapphire cypress” also makes a good Christmas tree with blue green and blue foliage fast growing and very drought tolerant for growing

This maybe a "you don't know much about growing Xmas trees do ya" question but... on the trees with the crooked trunks (and not the split trunks...lol), couldn't you just let them grow a little taller and trim the bottom branches up to where the trunk is straight enough to be usable or just go ahead and trim the bottom branches up? 🤷♂ It may look a little funny to a customer seeing a tree with its bottom branches cut though.
Oh, and $50 is a good deal. If I remember right, they can be $60+, easily depending on size, at the box stores.
I grow Xmas trees and for crooked or mishapen lower trunks you can absolutely "burn" the first foot. I also have split trunks that I keep as long as the split isn't in the first foot, I call'em "compromise trees" since there is 2 tops it means 1 star and 1 angel!!

I measure a tree by my husband's height. Just set him in the spot in the living room then stand him up next to the prospective tree! Works for the height anyway, every time.
WE USED TO ALWAYS HAVE A CEDAR TREE, IN THE 90'S WE STARTED BUYIN TREES, BRINGS BACK MEMORIES, THANX FOR THAT, PROBABLY HAVE A DOZEN FOLKS SAYIN MAKE YA SOME WREATHS OUT OF THOSE CULLS, REALLY GET A KICK OUT OF THE LIL FELLA
Cedar trees are the classic tree around here too! Or, they were at one time at least.
