While you have the window out, you may want to consider building a header that runs the length of the old window and set it in place against the top plate of the wall. Then jack the header up, to remove the sag in the top plate, until it is level and touching the plate all the way across the opening. That will also help with any sag you may have in the roof in that area. Just be sure to jack it up slowly to prevent excessive stress on that old lumber. Slow and steady wins the race lol.

I feel your pain. I am in the process of remodeling a house and every time I try to fix one thing, I open a can of worms with five other problems. You know, stuff like studs not on 16" centers, missing studs, siding nailed to places where there are no nailers to nail to, rafters cut in half, just because. Etc. Etc. Etc. I don't believe there is a single square wall or floor anywhere. Oh well.
    Keep on keeping on, brother.

Hey Wes know exactly what your going through my first home was over 100 years old. I found the same issues when I remodeled it. The worst was replacing rotten foundation in master bedroom. When was built they just dug narrow trenches to lay foundation sills right into ground. I spent days wheelbarrowing dirt through the house and out front door. Just to rebuild a new foundation above ground level. Just one of many Pandora boxes I uncovered.

Wes... My go to solution for home renovations is Habitat for Humanity Restore. I bought about 5000 dollars worth of windows and doors for less than 800 dollars. All were double pane and high impacted resistant. All were new since they get donations from Home Depot and Lowes.

The added benefit of windows that open will be when you are able to use them for cross ventilation. We did something similar on our large window wall and the added ventilation has made the whole house more comfortable during the few heat episodes we get in the summer.

Hello Wes. I think this may have been the first time I have seen your porch and what a great one it is for maybe watching the wildlife. The combination lock on the door is like one I found in my shed. With four tumblers, there would only be 10,000 possibilities so I did not throw it away. I had to start somewhere, so I started by lining it up the numbers at 0000 which would make it easy to keep up where I was in this effort to "crack" the lock. It opened on the first number, yes, 0000. I had hoped you would be able to successfully remove the window, but double insulated windows were a great choice and find. Have good days!

Hi Wes. In my country is a spanish saying witch says (in spanish) "no hay mal que por bien no venga". IDK if you speak spanish or not, but the overall meening translation would be "good things come out from bad situations". By opening that "Pandora box" you almost did all the tedious work to install your new AND BETTER windows in almost no time; special mention the time of the year when an open wall to the elements is not recomendable, so the quicker, the better. As some say..."happy wife... happy life".
I admire your hard working and dedication to all the numrous items you have to attend in the farm.
As always, cheers from NE Patagonia, Argentina, and BTW: Marry Xmas and a HNY to you and your family.

I don't know if it's too late to say anything, but my dad being the master carpenter that he was; would get a beam or something under that ceiling as close to the wall as he could and jack that thing up to relieve the pressure on that window. Then build up the proper header for it. Adding extra jack studs and all would be a plus. Then you could nail it all up, tying it all together. You need to get the pressure off that window and at the same time; get it all plum and straight. I hope this is not too late and helpful.

Hi Wes. Yes you made the best decision, that window frame was toast. apart from the lintel being flat - which you were aware off. the window frame was built wrong with no centre mullion (vertical timber) the glazing beads too narrow. replacing it with heavier frames was your best option
I have been been fabricating timber windows for 40 years and I am surprised that window frame lasted as long as it did. All the best have a good xmas and new year from Scotland

The window has been load bearing. Temp shoring inside and out. Hydraulically lift the center of the top plate. Once the top plate is back to level, reframe with a 2 x 8 header. The window can not possibly go back to flat as long as it is load bearing.

When we moved into our house the windows were so bad that when the wind would blow the curtains would move. I replaced 12 windows with insulated glass windows and the savings in heat cost have more than paid for it over the years. It does get cold where you live, replacing your windows is the right choice. I spent five months at Fort Gordon during the winter months and it snowed about two inches there. The crazy nuts from Florida had never seen snow before and were outside rolling in it.

One thing I would check before you put in new windows, is the foundation. If it is weak on that wall you could just have more trouble down the road. Getting two new windows was a good move. Remember the foundation and the roof are the most important parts of the house. I know you understand that a good foundation in life is the most important thing you can provide for your family, works the same for your house. God Bless.

Putting support between the windows will allow you to straighten the top plate if you do it slowly to not break anything. I think you made the best choice as straightening windows is near impossible.

If you put tape, like masking tape or painter's tape in an X across the window pane, it prevents them from breaking during removal. It worked on a mirror for me, but I'm not DIY-ing windows (i hope) any time soon.

Wes .... EYE PROTECTION. You are right there with all that glass in front of you. It is great that you draped behind the window on the inside of the house, I assume in case any of the glass breaks. But, you should always be wearing eye protection. I know there have not been any mishaps that eye protection would have saved you from serious injury, and you have been lucky on that count. But, please, make it a habit of protection your eyes ..... or maybe your entire face with some sort of a face shield .... if for no other reason than to set an example for your "mini me".

When I was a kid, my Dad would buy the ugliest tree on the lot. We'd bring it home, and he'd cut branches from the back of the tree, drill holes in the trunk, and reinsert the branches he cut off. We'd end up with a one-sided tree that sat flush against the wall. Was too cool.

Hi Mr. Green Jeans. You should know that when Zeus stuffed Pandora's Box with the ills of the world, he also placed a gift at the bottom of the box. When he gave Pandora the box he warned her not to open it, but curiosity got the best of her and she opened the box, and unleashed all the ills, disease, and misery on the world as she knew it. When the box emptied out, there was one more gift inside. From the depths of the box rose HOPE. Because Zeus, in his anger, thought to himself that the world would need something to get through disease, hardship, and misery and that would be HOPE. Zeus might have been angry and wanted revenge on Prometheus, but he also had compassion as well. Did you also know that there is a parallel in the Pandora myth and the Creation of Eve, in the Garden of Eden ??
