Is it shaded most of the time on the side of the house that you took the shrubs out? If so, look into plants-shrubs that do well in shade. I don’t think most shrubs thrive in shaded areas. It looks so much better after you removed all the dead stuff! If you don’t want to mulch around that side of the house, just plant grass.
