This game has much better graphics than any Castlevania on NES. Better story too

Was my favorite childhood GameGear game.
Was a decade later til I discovered Castlevania, and became a fan.
I was a Castlevania fan for years without even knowing it! 🤷
This game is Jekyll on his honeymoon at Dracula’s Castle- except Dracula has already been defeated and Jekyll revealed his cane as the Penguin’s concealed sword.
Meaning Mike always picks the best and most quality games on any retro console- thus making him superior! 😂

Pretty wild art, the story intrigues me, but I'm unsure how good it bad it is, or how well it lives up to the cover art
Kinda reminds me of Jekkyl and Hyde but was less shitty.
Another good SMS game released only in the EU. It's no surprise it wasn't as good of a system in the US, but I suppose they moved onto the Genesis sooner.
Loving the Master System playthroughs, keep it up, I love that console, though I grew up with an NES.
Master of Darkness is good, not as great as Castlevania, but a really good game, above average for sure. The axe is ass. I love the intro music with the demon face and intro graphics.
Land of Illusion and Asterix and the Secret Mission are a couple games I'd like to see your opinion on, especially Land of Illusion. I think it's better than SMS Castle of Illusion by far, it's such a fun game with unique things you don't expect.
And Deep Duck Trouble has that really good sequel on Game Boy Color, Donald Duck Goin' Quackers(Quack Attack in PAL). Same name as the Crash Bandicoot style console games, but I swear the GBC version is a sequel to the SMS/Game Gear Deep Duck Trouble. And it improves on it in every way, the graphics are really nice for a GBC game, and the double jump feels good, it's fun.
I already did Land of Illusion. It's probably the best Master System game I have played so far. I am curious if anything will ever top it.

It's really like you commented on during this playthrough: Looks like Castlevania with the main character being replaced by Dr. Jekyll from Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde on NES (except that he now has more useful weapons).
When I joined the stream half an hour in, the thing that most confused me was the choice of having white ghostly faces as the "torches" in this game. But now that I saw the opening cutscene and the main character is something like a paranormal investigator, it makes sense that the ghosts he converses with support him in his quest. Still, I think Ninja Gaiden is the forerunner of using weird "torch" designs (one level has birds and one level has dragonflies I think).

It's a cool and interesting game. The story it's simple but enjoyable, the gameplay it's the usual. Besides Social be able to crouch -walking, that was new xD

This game using stuff like House of Wax for it's inspiration and settings is honestly so cool. House of Usher would actually be a great final stage since it always crumbles or sinks into a swamp at the conclusion of the story. (although Usher himself maybe not so much as a grand villain, although he does come from a long line of monstrous people.)
The laboratory lost out in some remote wilderness/jungle totally reminds me of Dr. Vornoff's from Bride of the Monster, too!

Dr. Jekyllvania and Mr. Hyde... Now all we need is to replace these enemies to the ones from Jekyll NES game, get that infamous music back, change some backgrounds, tiles, sprites to match NES game more, but this by default fits Jekyll game so much already lol... Maybe even add new levels lol...

I'm a Sega fanboy, and I remember borrowing this off a friend when I was 11. I remember finishing it in a day or 2, wasn't anything special. Played Castlevania (NES) a few years ago, and I admit Castlevania is a far better game. Master of Darkness is very similar, has nicer graphics, more polished etc.. so you think it would be better, but no I much prefer the challenge of Castlevania, it's harrrrd. Took me a lot longer than a day or 2 to beat it as an adult 😁

I love the music in this game!
This game had a lot of problems, to be sure, but we've all seen worse. My favorite enemy was definitely the haunted portraits of JFK. "Ask not what your country can do for you... Ask why a cane does more damage than a gun."

I did Cinemassacre for 15 plus years. Writing/editing etc. I essentially retired because of that. But I still make content since I’m 42 what else am I going to do stick my thumb in my ass? 😅 I love streaming and playing games so I do it often. I’m lucky to be able to have people watch me do what I love.

I like the controls and difficulty level more than castlevania, but the music of castlevania is a masterpiece compared to this.

Never heard of this game. A cross between Castlevania & Jekyll & Hyde. It lacks the creepy atmosphere Castlevania has, and is a bit too on the nose as a imitator.
Blame nintendo and their shitty third party contracts during the nes era.. like Because Konami made Castlevania for the NES then they couldn't put it on any of the system thankfully those were deemed not legal by the time the Mega drive/genesis came out which is why that system actually got a Castlevania game

Even the "good" Master System games are pretty jank in comparison to decent NES games and there is just nothing on the system on the same level as things such as Super Mario 3, Castlevania 3, any random Mega Man game and even things like Contra for the NES. Still a fun system and library to explore though since most of this was fairly obscure in the States at least (yes, I know this was a PAL release).
Edit: on further reflection, I think this game pioneered the Doom 2016 monster arena concept. I can't believe ID didn't port over the BONG BONG BONG BONG BONG in the background though.
Mercs is like contra, sonic chaos is up there with mario 3 and Master darkness isn't as good as Castlevania 3 but it's still a damn good game in its own right :D
