- The Sega Master System saw many games released during its lifespan but a few games were canned. Today, we're looking at canceled Master System games that for one reason or another were never released. In this video, I'm looking at canceled master system games and discussing why they were left on the cutting floor. Which canceled Master System games are you upset by? Are there other canceled master system games?

It’s crazy how many games were in works but never came out for the master system which is a shame

I had no idea Last Action Hero could have been on the SMS! That is one of my favorite Arnold movies!
That's a movie I still need to watch! I hope the movie is not as bad as the game was considered on the Genesis.
Another good video. I especially like the cover art you made for each title. As far as what games I would've liked to play it would have to be the Viking one and of course Lemmings 2!

I was always a fan of the _Road Rash_ games. I like them so much that even to THIS DAY, I lean out of the window of my Hyundai Elantra and swing chains at passing motorists (I don’t drive a motorcycle - I’m not THAT crazy)…
I loved the PS1 era of Road Rash. Once I learned that there were older versions I tried to play them but couldn't enjoy them as much. Swinging that chain and hitting people with 2x4s is a blast. Funny... I picture you more of a PT Cruiser owner lol
Always fascinating to see games that were cancelled, and what could’ve been. I will say, Phantasy Star II could’ve been a big deal for the SMS, but makes sense to why it was released on the Genesis instead. Oh man, Last Action Hero was an AWFUL game, so SMS fans were saved from a terrible game lol. Overall, some really interesting games to see cancelled. Awesome video as always man!
I agree, I think Phantasy Star II would have been a huge bump for the SMS in North America as it was stalling out during this time. But I also see the business sense in making it for the Genesis. In the end, I think Sega made the right call. I've never heard of Last Action Hero until making this video, including the film. Is the film as bad? Some of the games sounded decent, but the SMS was always in the shadows compared to the Genesis so it makes sense that releases for it were canceled in favor of the Genesis. We never got the PAL MD game so it makes sense we never got the SMS version.
Nice list! I've never heard of the Viking Child, but I would have played that! I would really want to know how much money companies would save back then by unreleasing a completed game! I mean it's already fully finished and functional, why not just release it even if they're not confident that it will do well commercially! Great video and keep up the good work!
I had the Atari Lynx version of Viking Child. It was decently fun, although not exactly amazing. But the Master System version he was showing here looked like it moved faster, which almost certainly would make the game more fun.
I'm very curious on how much money they would save by not releasing a game... seems quite silly to me! I'm bummed we missed out on a few of these games and The Viking Child is one of them. Thanks for watching buddy!

I kinda hated Battletoads, because it kicked my 8 year old so hard I rage quit, lol. It's cool that Brazil got its own game in 1996.
The viking child looks pretty interesting. Reminds me of some of the DOS sidescrollers. Pretty crazy it got cancelled so late in its cycle.
Man, Road Rash was the bomb! Too bad this version was never released.
I played James Pond, but in MSDOS. I didn't even realize it had a sega version. Crazy!
Lemmings was another one I played in MSDOS. Awesome that the dev released it as a ROM! I love when developers do that sort of thing 😀
I really enjoy when you leave feedback on the games because you've experienced so many of them as a computer gamer! It's fun to see the differences and hear your input. Battletoads is stupid hard haha, it's not for me. The Viking Child looked decent, I wonder what could have been. Road Rash was a lot of fun too, I liked the PS1 versions. James Pond looks very underrated, I didn't know that it was a combo of Super Mario World and Sonic! I agree I'm happy that the dev released the rom for it. People have begun putting it on a physical cart now so others can actually buy it. Pretty cool, but I wish the dev would make money from it! Thanks for watching my friend!!

Cool stuff, Phantasy Star II on the SMS could have been epic. I think moving development to the Genesis/Mega Drive was the right call though.

We can only dream about some of the other games. Did you know there was also Die Hard, Lethal Weapon 3 and Hook also planned ❤.

Thanks so much for your support Oli! That is very cool you have a cart for Lemmings 2, I didn't know that was available. I had no idea about Die Hard, Lethal Weapon 3 and Hook! Someone also mentioned The Godfather... lots of potential in some of those games... man what could have been?!
@TigerChainsawVideoGames n worries dude. Yes the Godfather was only quite recently discovered but no prototype has been found yet. Its a shame. The brief footage looks great
Specifically I think it was Die Hard 2. Probably would have been a port of the Amiga game.
I loved the hell out of the first lemmings on SNES
I'm surprised you enjoyed Lemmings. I don't picture you as much of a puzzle gamer, I'm more of a Returnal gamer myself.
Let me give some thoughts on these:
Battle Toads - I wasn't aware of this one but considering how difficult the other versions proved to be Virgin may have felt it too difficult for 8-bit.
The Viking Child - An odd choice not to release it I agree.
Crystal Pony Tales - PAL never even saw a MD release so not surprising this port wasn't released.
Road Rash 2 - by the time they released this game Road Rash 3 would have already come out. Probably the best for it being cancelled.
Excellent Dizzy Collection - I find it hilarious TH-camrs like Slope and Nova Bug are convinced this was released when it wasn't. 😂
Phantasy Star 2 - the way I look at it we got the best version we could have for a different console platform so a win there.
James Pond 3 - they would have released this in 1995 I think? I don't think the market was viable enough for it to be released at this time.
Pat Riley Basketball - I agree if the game did badly elsewhere a Master System port wasn't worth it.
Last Action Hero - they could have released it but the issue is that PAL never got the MD game so would have been weird releasing this for SMS.
Lemmings 2 - okay here's the thing: Lemmings on anything other than a computer doesn't really work. The console versions proved that so losing something so complicated as this game was kind of a no brainer.

@@TigerChainsawVideoGames Most certainly! Dizzy, Road Rash 2 and James Pond 3 definitely. Last Action Hero would have been interesting since it would be the same as the Game Gear version.

Gotta love Brazil for their insane love of the master system. Back when video games were a pastime and not the insane dopamine shot gamers get nowadays. Sigh.
Phantasy Star 2 is my favorite Phantasy Star game but you gotta be realist and see that it clearly was rushed and it saddens me. First game had so many different backgrounds for the fights, a lot of bosses and different planets etc. It felt super complete.
Ps 2 however has the best story IMO and the story really makes you think about technology and how lazy people are becoming. It has such great music too.
I've picked up so many Brazilian subscribers due to my Master System Brazilian video. They really do love their SMS! I still need to play Phantasy Star II.... I adore the first one but I haven't gotten around to trying out the rest of the series. Thanks for watching!
Nice video. I have to admit, I played PS2 on the Genesis, but I didn't care for it. I would have preferred the origional cast and more fantasy than sci-fi.

Honestly Crystal's Pony Tale looks like a SMS game.

It might have been intended for little girls but then something really awful happened. It's OK because now it's 'normal'...
Of all these, I'm mist surprised that Dizzy failed to get on the SMS, as it was originally an 8bit Microcomputer game, it would have fit snugly in the Master System library 🤷♂️
Dizzy would fit right at home on the SMS! It just feels like a SMS game.... At least the collection was released on a few other platforms. Thanks for watching buddy!

Wow some missed opportunities and oddly some have been released on Game Gear.
Isn't that strange? The Game Gear is a system that I don't have a lot of experience in although I know you collect for it. You would think that a release on both platforms would go hand in hand but I guess not. Thanks for watching buddy!

It's a cracking sequel. So good I ended up buying a cart online with it installed.
