    MkIX Spitfire differences-
    A new 10 ft 9 in (3.27 m) diameter four-bladed Rotol propeller was fitted, housed in a pointed spinner. The exhaust units were changed to six "fishtail" stacks per side. Under the nose, the three piece cowling was changed to a one piece layout. The oil tank was no longer a part of the cowling structure. Early Mk IXs had a teardrop shaped blister (a bulge) for a Coffman engine starter on the lower starboard side cowling, just behind the propeller. This was replaced by an improved electric starter on most two-stage Merlin powered Spitfires and, from late 1942 the blister like bulge was seen on only a few aircraft.
    The Type C wing was fitted as standard. Some mid and most late production Spifire Mk IXs and all Mk XVI were fitted with the Type E wing. While Spitfire IXs converted from Mk Vc's had the large teardrop fairings on the upper surfaces, on the majority of Mk VIIs, VIIIs, IXs and XVIs the teardrop shaped blisters covering the Hispano feed motors were reduced in size and more streamlined than those on the Mk Vc. According to A.P 1565J P & L (Spitfire IX, XI and XVI Pilot's Notes) the red painted undercarriage indicator rods, which projected through the tops of the wings when the undercarriage was down, were used only on early production Mk IXs. When fitted these rods supplemented an "Electric visual indicator" mounted on the instrument panel. The indicator rods seemed to be fitted on all Mk VIIs and VIIIs, supplementing the electric visual indicator. A light for the retractable tailwheel was mounted on the instrument panel, just below the main visual indicator.
    Because the intercooler required a radiator, the radiator under the starboard wing was halved in size and the intercooler radiator housed alongside. Under the port wing a new radiator fairing housed a square oil cooler alongside the other half-radiator unit. When the engine was running at low speed, one radiator section provided enough coolant; a thermostatic switch turned off the starboard radiator section until more power was called for and extra engine cooling was required.
    Other structural changes included flush riveting for the fuselage, introduced in mid-1943. A streamlined round rear-view mirror, with a bullet-shaped fairing replaced the rectangular version. On new production Mk IXs the small, teardrop shaped identification light behind the radio mast was removed.
    While early Mk IXs converted from Mk Vcs had the original (smaller) elevator horn mass-balances, most had the enlarged version with the straightened leading edge. A new rudder of greater area, which could be identified by a "pointed" tip, was fitted to many Mk VIIs, Mk VIIIs, and mid to late production Mk IXs and Mk XVIs.

    Fantastic model and build, but I do have one small observation. I might be wrong on this, but I think the red light goes on the port wing and the green on the starboard.

    Good day Terry. Beautiful indeed. That bird looks amazing, well done !!! Love that you went a step ahead and motorized this bird. However, I have to point out one thing I noticed that can be corrected easily. The Merlin engines turns the propeller to the right as seen from the cockpit. Your model is turning the prop to the left as seen from the cockpit. This can be easily solved by changing the polarity in the connector we see in behind the model with the red and black wires. Change it and the prop will be turning the right way, thus giving your bird the accuracy it needs. Other than that, great job and well done !!!!

      Thank you so much for your kind words, I really do appreciate it and it encourages me to build more and make more free content on TH-cam that i hope you enjoy. What makes the Spitfire even more iconic is the truth behind the some of the myths. The butcher bird made mincemeat of the early Spits, only the advent of the MK9 changed that. Pilots of that era, undoubtedly the bravest of the brave.

    I enjoy all of your build/reveal videos, Terry.
    Impressive work, great outcome. I agree with how you judge this kit. When considering the parameters of the restrictions to achieve a strict price point, 9/10 is how I score it. The overall shape is accurate and it should be because Airfix had the Paul H Monforton
    'Spitfire Mk.IX & XVI Engineered', book for reference. It is the best 1/24 kit that can be enhanced and modified I have built. Corrections and improvements are acceptable and enjoyable to do as part of the hobby. I do not give a 10/10 for the rough outer surfaces my kits had that required careful sanding, No Joy in correcting for scale accuracy.
    The kit is not state of the art but if it were i would expect a three fold or higher increase in the price and a decrease of three for what I could afford.

    • @littlehistory2392
      @littlehistory2392  25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Totally agree. I must bow to your superior knowledge on the technicallitys and great that you mentioned the sanding! It never occurred to me, ofcourse they would have been smooth! I will remember that for the next build. The stuka suffered the same problem, Airfix built in orange peel!! Thankyou as always SEMJW

    • @SEMJW
      @SEMJW 25 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@littlehistory2392 The rough texture on the recent, 1/48 SR-71 Revell, Revell Germany kit is as bad or worse.That and other issues made the build experience less fun convinced me not to build another existing kit from them. The Airfix Mk.IX in comparison is a far superior model and a better value.

    • @littlehistory2392

      It was a big decision to be honest. I did it purely because i liked the look of them. But scared of comments like "not a proper Spitfire" or "you took away its most recognisable feature". But i still believe we build these for ourselves and if other people like it, they will vote with a sub and a thumbs up. If not there's always the thumbs down....and there's already a bunch of thumbs down on this build. It saddens me , but I'm a great believer in freedom of expression, beliefs, speech and choice.

    Artistic licence excused regarding the startup haha.
    I once had a remote controlled excavator that you put cooking oil into, to get smoke coming out of the exhaust each time any motion was detected.. can't remember if it had revving sounds or not.
    Is this something you could implement in a future build, perhaps?
    Cool video.

    • @littlehistory2392
      @littlehistory2392  25 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Thankyou so much for your kind words. One of my earliest videos was a "how to" make your own smoke generator for scale models. So it is absolutely possible. The only problem with putting one into a 1/24 or 1/18 scale aircraft kit is space and the effect a spinning propeller would have. the wind generated would maybe make any smoke generated invisible. I have a 1/24 Hurricane build coming up in 2 months time, i may do some mad professing on that build :) Right now i have the Tamiya 1/10 scale RC Mstang to finish (vid coming sunday) and the 1/18 ME262 coming the Sunday after.
