  • A HUGE thanks goes to GYRUSS who sent me this kit to build. Please do yourself a favour and check out his fantastic channel, you won't be disappointed: / gyruss
    This build covers several areas in my 1:72 Spitfire collection. I wanted to build a desert-themed Spitfire, and I wanted to build a Polish Spitfire. And thanks to these spare Airfix decals I found I was now able to have both on the same kit!

    I hope you enjoy my kit bashed Spitfire, so far this one is my favourite in my 1:72nd Spitfire Collection!

      Wow! This is the best Matchbox Spitfire 1/72 build I have ever seen....period! Many modelers would rather build a different kit so they can build their version of their favorite Spitfire build but your build is proof that it is the modeler, not the kit that can make it look great.

    When I was a kid here in South Africa in the 70's the matchbox kits were the most saught after kits. I have been building them the last few years and enjoy the eaay builds of them.
    Thanks for sharing this build

      Me too, there's a lot of charm and modeling nostalgia for these older Matchbox kits, and I really love collecting them :)

      Indeed, especially Matchbox! They were before my time, but I built one or two as a kid. They are my favourite vintage kits :)

    In the early 1970s my dad worked at a plastics factory that had a trade shop where workers could buy plastic kits made by matchbox and I used to get one a month as part of my pocket money. In the shops they retailed at about 25new pence, but he paid 17 new pence for each kit and the Spitfire Mark IX was one of them. The Airfix Spit was more common, but Matchbox Mk 9 seemed to be better to fit together and didn't have as many problems with flash on the parts, though Airfix was still better than the offerings of companies like Frog and Novo. Airfix 1/72 scale Spitfires now retail at about £7 for a basic kit. Thank you for the nostalgia trip

    Matchbox kits were the best when I was a kid, even better than the Airfix models.
    I used to find that the Airfix kits were either distorted or too many rags due to continuous molding by the manufacturers using the same old molds.
    But Matchbox were spot on!

    I followed my late Father, he was an avid model builder. As a kid I would play with my model aircraft all the time, after months and years of constant use and abuse I would reconstruct the (scenes from the Battle of Britain movie) by stuffing fire crackers in the already wrecked models and blowing them up. Oh well, when you are 12 or 13 (at the time) imaginations run wild.

    Here in the US matchbox was less common BUT as a young builder I appreciated the sturdy plastic, less warping of parts than say Revell...😖

    • @paulcrombie9623
      @paulcrombie9623 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree, Airfix had the same problem, using the same old molds in their manufacture.
      They should renew their moldings every so often I think?
      This will keep their kits nice and crisp, perfection!

    My favorite kind of build, taking a not so great kit and make it look amazing. Kit bashing, some extra modeling skills and a really nice paint finish. Great job!

      Thanks Bob I'm glad that you enjoyed this video :) This was the first time I've ever done a project like this, but it was so much fun I want to do it more often. The only problem is gathering the parts to do a kit bash like this. But I've got a few more planned for the future :)

    That was a brilliant build and for those who 'say some of the newer Airfix kits have trench like panel lines Nope those Matchbox ones are proper trenches. I'm now tempted to try the new Vc from Airfix.

    I remember that the original Matchbox Spitfire Mk.IX kit gave you the option of building it as either a low back or high back version and therefor also provided you with a bubble canopy.

    Unbelievable! What a radical transformation! Seeing the final result, it´s easy to forget that originally it was an old Matchbox kit. This has been beyond any question one of the most striking transformations on an old kit that I've ever seen, and at least to me that has way more merit than getting a great result from an already great kit.

    Another excellent build. Interesting how you used the sytrene for wheel wells, thanks for sharing the technique.

    • @rebelsatcloudnine
      @rebelsatcloudnine  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Ricardo, I've done this one another Matchbox kit, but that one was mostly square. I was glad that the styrene filled out the wheel well enough that I was able to record it. It was a bit tricky to do, but it nicely closes up that open space that can be irritating to look at :)

      @rebelsatcloudnine  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you kindly TWA :) Some day's its really nice to go back to basics with a older model kit. The Heller F4U sounds really great, I'm betting it's better then the newly tooled Revell kit. I'm only speaking from my own experiences with that kit.

      Thanks Robbo, I was pleasantly surprised to see that this is a fairly accurate kit in terms of the shape and profile. The original canopy would have needed some work to make it more accurate, but it was cracked which is why I replaced it.

    Matchbox really made some good kits - I didn't see you struggling with any fit issues here.

    • @rebelsatcloudnine
      @rebelsatcloudnine  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No fit issues that I can recall, it was a pretty straight forward build. And the shape of this Spitfire was quite good compared to others I've built from that era. I think the biggest hurdle was getting the Tamiya canopy to fit properly, but that was more or less a self inflicted wound on my part :)

    Great work and a beautiful end result... :) I am impressed by your mix'n'match of parts.. :) Is that Stanizlaw Skalski's Spitfire? I can't remember if that is the option with the Airfix kit, but I have a feeling it is..
    I hope to do a double build of the new tooled Airfix 1/72 Mk.Vc Spitfire, i.e do both options, for the 'All Things Airfix' Group Build. Time will tell..

    That came out great! Is it sad for me to say...I think I have an Airfix Spitfire in my stash somewhere? I haven't seen my stuff for so long, I've forgotten what I have! lol btw, I got my new British loco in the mail today. It's up on my IG page. And! Canadian Pacific 7022, which CP painted to honor their navy was down my way. It's painted like a battleship (gray on top and red on the bottom).

    Jared this is stunning. I noticed you shooting enamels on the lower part of the wing. what did you use to reduce your paint to be able to spray, and what pressure do spray at? Awesome work as always my young friend. I hope your week is going well and everyone in your family is healthy. talk with you soon.

    • @rebelsatcloudnine
      @rebelsatcloudnine  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That was very difficult, as the enamel I used has become quite old. I used Tamiya Enamel Thinner, which is the purest enamel thinner I've ever used.

  • @stevethefishdotnet
    @stevethefishdotnet 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That blue color on the underside is beautiful. But since it was an enamel paint, I was hoping you'd show what you used to do a panel line wash on that surface. Did you do an acrylic clear coat and it was enough to protect the enamel underneath?

    • @rebelsatcloudnine
      @rebelsatcloudnine  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm very embarrassed about that, I thought that I recorded a lot more footage then I actually did. Mainly the gloss coating and the panel wash. I did 2 layers of Tamiya X-22 Clear over the model, once before the decals and another after to seal them in. The 2 layers of clear were adequate enough to protect the enamel underneath, that being said I still worked carefully as to not was out the blue.
      The Azure Blue I've only used 3 times, and sadly I think this is it's last run, the paint has become too old, and it was difficult to airbrush it for this video. I've used it first on the Italeri Spitfire Mk V, and more notably on the Bandai 1:72 Resistance X-wing. I really liked it for that model, it was a difficult color to identify.

    I thought the underside of the desert variants of many aircraft were a much deeper azure blue, more so than this what looks like light blue? Or is it just the camera or the lighting.

      The Matchbox decals weren't too bad, they hadn't yellowed which was good. But I used the Airfix decals because I really wanted to build a desert themed Spitfire :)
