  • The Silver Spitfire.
    This is my project to build G-IRTY, the around the world record breaking Spitfire. I will be using the magnificent new Airfix 1/24 kit, and probably quite a lot of foil, to attempt a replica of the polished metal beauty that is the Silver Spitfire.

    In part one, I introduce the kit and some of the extras I have picked up for the build.

    You won't see five spoke wheels on a modern current day spitfire.
    We had a saying at Charles Church Spitfires with regard to the main wheels. Four holes good, three holes better, five holes bad !
    Five holes are not considered airworthy because of the material the wartime wheels were made of (magnesium) and prone to cracking and corrosion. Something to watch when modelling a modern restoration airframe.

      @JenesisDesignsandModelcraft  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I wasn't thinking when I ordered the wheels. At the time there were no 4 - spoke ones listed on Hannants either. There are now, from Armory models. I might get some of those, might even use the kit wheels yet ... The exhausts are not fishtails on G-IRTY either, they are the round ones!

      Generally, if you want to model a MODERN Spitfire, you can't take it as read that because that's how the original looked back then, it's how it will look now. .
      I can't really remember after all this time exactly what the differences were but the Spitfires we did for example had long span ailerons fitted for example because modern day restorers have the luxury of being able to fit the best mod states to these restored airframes that only came along on the wartime Spitfires as parts were upgraded on the production lines.
      The Charles Church MK 9 two seater had extra long range fuel tanks fitted into the original gun bay spaces, thus giving enough range to fly to Berlin and back. Something wartime Spitfires could never of done.
      The interchangeable rudder is likely to be for better rudder authority in day to day operations, but that's another case of making use of another modification that would almost certainly not of been fitted to the aircraft originally.
      I think that they fitted a wartime style rudder for the round the world flight to give the aircraft that classic Spitfire shape.
      Personally, I would model the aircraft as it was on that flight, complete with the rounded rudder.
      Lastly, look for the modern radio fit both in the cockpit, as well as the modern radio aerial fit locations.

      Hi Gordon, hope you are well. When were you at CCS?

    • @gordonfraser6025
      @gordonfraser6025 ปีที่แล้ว

      @JenesisDesignsandModelcraft In the late 80s. A long time ago now.
      I'm also the guy who told Mr Dick Melton that the Southampton museum were planning to sell their walrus parts. Dick always wanted to rebuild w Walrus back to flying condition and had been collecting Walrus parts for years, but never expected to find a airframe he could restore. I had to visit the Southampton museum and told them in passing that I was from Charles Church in passing. The man showing me the Sandringham flying boat mentioned that they had the front half of a Walrus "caravan" that they were disposing of as the restoration was beyond the museum's resources. I was just looking around the museum like any other member of the public and was not there ON CCS Bisness at all. Well, I drove home to Dicks at at least Mach 2 and told Dick about it immediately. When Dick contacted the museum they informed him that not only did they have a Walrus front fuselage modified into a caravan, but the guy had also made a small car to tow it with using the remaining rear fuselage as well. The two parts had been un-stiched along the Walrus panel lines and it turns out that 95% of the fuselage was there. Even the retractable undercarriage legs, the wheels and tyre's were used as the caravans wheels all be it they were fitted the wrong way round to put them on in such a way that they didn't stick out beyond the body of the caravan itself. Hope that's of interest to you.
      Gordon.

    It's amusing to see all the aftermarket for the Spit. Which isn't actually all that necessary to build up a very good looking model. I'm currently building the Trumpeter 1/32 F-105D....it literally NEEDED all aftermarket available.
    And then some.😂🥴

    Looks good . I'm getting back to modelling so I have some Eduard Spitfires and overtrees to get on with.I also have a Tiger Moth to build and need to research the one that Mithril had as I had aerobatics in that one in 1991.

    Hi Jen, just got back from hols, I'm going to watch this one "feet up" later. But have you heard of, or tried Revell Chrom? I just got some for the car modes I do, and it's very very good. Might help you with smaller items like the spinner?

    The decals are a nightmare to use and the anti glair does not fit.

    I have four kits. Three will be posed in flight with variable speed electric motors with stainless steel drive shafts, supported by two sealed bearings to spin the prop true, without wobble. I designed/fabricated multi position stainless steel stands and modified seated figures.
    One of the three is going to be G-IRTY using the Draw Decals received a month ago.
    I have the AK Super Chrome ink and thinner to use for the polished finish. It is meant to be a improvement over Molotow chrome ink, the later used on a 1/32 Tamiya Mk. IXc. that turned out successful. Personally not a fan of metal foil on scales under 1/16. As a metal finish with a polished but not mirror look, similar to a factory fresh unpainted P-47, AK True Metal wax works well.
    Completed the Airscale cockpit detail kit two days ago. The instrument panel is amazing. Well worth it.
    Ordered the new Quinta Studios cockpit set. Parts from both upgrades will be in the fourth Spit posed landed with the canopy open.
    The three kit engines not installed will be built on stands with added detail using resin parts from Anyz.
    I was able to finish my Revell Germany SR-71. Nice to have this aircraft that was announced to the world, July, 24, 1964, known. By the quality of the kit one could assume Revell made the molds the same year but did not tell anyone until seven decades later . Despite that it can still be built into a impressive model after lots of work.

    Hiya Jen great video as usual ~ when you showed the exhaust stubs and mentioned that they are very hollow, the ones on the right didn't look very hollow but the ones on the left certainly did.

    • @JenesisDesignsandModelcraft
      @JenesisDesignsandModelcraft  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a trick of the light, I noticed it too. The hollowness is about half the depth of the stub, so once painted it will look really good.

    Excellent. We've waited a while for this so eager to see you get stuck in.
    I'm keen to see how you tackle the Airscale IP. I found it quite fiddly but it looks superb with patience.
    The exhaust stubs are a must have. The huge hollows in the underside of the kit parts are virtually unforgivable in this scale.
    Wheels and gear legs, not so sure but they do look good so I can see why you treated yourself.
    Enjoy the build of this impressive kit. Cheers.

    • @JenesisDesignsandModelcraft
      @JenesisDesignsandModelcraft  ปีที่แล้ว

      The main reason for the brass legs is future proofing. I have a big Hellcat that I built on release of the kit, which I take to shows reasonably often. The undercarriage on that things is massive and really strong - more than up to transportation .... the Spitfire not so much, she's quite delicate in comparison.

    great idea about G-IRTY.. especially with aluminum foil finish.. exhaust stacks are must for this kit.. I am building mine right now. Mine is in primer now and has painted on insignia. I need to sort our wing tip lights (dumb execution on Airfix side, in my opinion) before I can continue on.
