Thank you very much for sharing Russ. I am a former motorcyclist who has fallen/crashed on every kind of road surface, from knarly dirt paths to manicured pavement, and I took up e-biking in my 60s partly because I perceived it as a gentler and "safer" activity. I was only partially correct, and six months into it I had a serious fall that surprised and befuddled me. I still don't get why my rear tire slid out like it did. The point is, EXPECT to eventually fall, and plan and equip yourself to absorb the impact and abrasions as well as possible.
Whenever a senior falls and loses consciousness, even for a short time, they need to go to e.r. and be checked over. Like you , I didn’t immediately go to er after my major crash. Found out 3 days later one of my vertebrae has a small crack. The leg bruises could cause clots , especially if your in for a long plane ride home. Glad your recovering.
For years I rode a bike trail that has sections with paving that drops off like that. Once, I was behind someone who absent-mindedly went off the pavement, then tried to ride back on, but the pavement took her down. If you go off a surface like that, it's best not to try to ride back on, but stop if you can, then lift your bike back on. I always thought of that bike trail that it was designed by people who don't ride bikes.
Russ, Thank God. We are so glad this wasn’t worse and didn’t wreck your knee. I assume that was a thought going down the hill. It was great to have some help too. That sidewalk looked nasty. It looks hazardous for any bike or ankle that hits the edge. Take some time to rest and heal.
WOW! You were lucky! Well, maybe in a strange sort of way. Not lucky that your wheel dropped over the edge, but lucky you didn't get impaled with those spiky rusty posts. Glad you are still here to keep making your videos. Thanks for showing your bruises. At least you didn't keep rolling down the hill and get run over by a car driving by. Hey Russ, glad you are OK and back in a safe place! Thanks to Joe, he's a good man making sure you were alright. I'm sure you'll think twice when you come to an uneven sidewalk on a 15-18 foot hill paralelled by rusty poles. As Pedro said, the warranty on your knee has expired lol. Stay safe Russ!

Glad your ok Russ. I love to go to CA to ride but those hills are pretty much everywhere. Like i said before i sold my trike after a few rides for same reason. Hope you heal up quick buddy.
Definite learning curve. Glad you are OK. Now I understand why the dealer we purchased our etrike from offered 2 hour training sessions in a large empty lot behind their building. They had us doing figure 8's, learning how to go to and from different surfaces/curbs, starting, stopping and shouts of keep your feet on the pedals, do not put your feet down and lean, lean, lean when all we wanted to do was go, go, go.
At over 66, I would forget that there was an outside wheel and get hurt. I never ride in the street. My small city considers all ebikes bicycles. Im pedaling my ebike on the sidewalks daily, the street is too dangerous.
Thanks for sharing Russ. Earlier this year on my E bike I was riding on the sidewalk and came to a dog leg so left the sidewalk into the grass going in a straight line and when I went to enter the sidewalk again my tire caught in a rut between the grass and the sidewalk and flipped me over and bang me up pretty good. It took a couple of weeks for my knees to heal. Now I make sure I have my helmet on and I go a lot slower and when I leave one surface to go to another surface I'm always very cautious. Unfortunately the roads are difficult to ride with my E bike so I usually use the sidewalks but there are a surprising amount of dangers on sidewalks I was not aware of the worst of which is many drivers at intersections aren't expecting people to be crossing intersections from the sidewalks on bicycles. I have had cars almost hit me and it was in a bright sunny day at noon time and I had on a red jacket. I also have a middle school that has children letting out of school at different times of day and sometimes they try to grab onto my bicycle when I'm passing or even jump in front of me which could cause me to leave the sidewalk and go into traffic. I find pedestrians like children or people with dogs to be very dangerous.
If it is any consolation I ran off a hiking trail switchback because I was looking over my shoulder at a beautiful lady runner who just ran by me (going the other way). So I ran off the trail where it switched back, and then fell rolling over and over down the hill. I came to rest on the same trail a hundred feet below where I left it. I got there and the beautiful female stopped to see if I was okay. Turns out she was an army nurse. She asked what happened, I couldn't tell her. I did tell her the only thing injured was my pride. So falling on a bike is really no big whoop. I am glad you weren't injured horribly.
Glad you're ok Russ! I got a 3 wheeler Honda when i was 13. I think back to my Dad's wisdom when he said, enough was enough and sold it. He watched me flip it a couple times. Trikes are dangerous in my opinion.
Trikes are dangerous period .My sister inlaw killed herself on one of those Honda 3 wheelers back then they later stop maiking them . Really glad your ok Russ
Similar crash on a bike trail when the trail was higher than the ground. Broken hand and lacerated face and multiple rashes. I was wearing a helmet that really saved my life. The Thousand helmet was cracked, but not my skull. That part when you went down is so hard to watch. Wear your helmet and gloves!!!! You never know. It just takes a second! So glad Russ is alRight!!!! Hahaha!
Glad to see that you're okay. I'm not surprised by the amount of damage can happen with an e-bike, even at slower speeds...and especially on an inherently unstable e-trike (which also explains why 3-wheel atv's have been banned in the US for years). At minimum, an approved bike helmet, gloves, and a safety vest, while riding any class 1, 2, and 3 e-bikes (especially e-trikes). I'm glad you posted this video, as it makes for an effective PSA.
Russ, Glad you are ok!! Sorry that happened to you on your trip. Glad that biker was there to help you, what a nice soul! I recently fell as well but am ok so I understand how jarring it can be. Be safe out there.
That was some VERY nasty fall. Those thorny things look really dangerous to say nothing about those pipes sticking up from the ground. Glad you survived. Love my Xnito helmet, thanks to you.
I’m glad you are okay. The only time I remember riding a tricycle was in kindergarten. I use to speed around in circles on two wheels. One thing I do remember is how awful tricycles are for handling. I can’t imagine riding an adult E Tricycle at over 10 mph. 😢
Ok, I drove over 2,000 km on the Lectric Trike (71 yrs). Although, I got in no accidents as you did, I did feel uneasy. Especially, on sidewalks where they go uneven with driveways. Now I wear a helmet, safety vest, full padded gloves, day-time lights are on. Oh and I now have a Lectric cargo bike and no longer have the Trike. I feel much more secure riding on the cargo bike. Love your film clips Russ. Keep right-side up. 😊
Russ, so glad you are OK and willing to share you experience. I have owned an E-bike for a few months and had not ridden a regular bike in years. I am going on 76 years of age. Unfortunately, I have fallen from this bike numerous times in learning to ride it. I have not fallen recently, thankfully. Your experience shows it can happen to any of us and we must always be aware of our surroundings and dress appropriately for safe riding. Glad you are OK and looking forward to more entertaining and educational videos to come. One more thing: thank you Joe!
This is the main problem with the Short wheel base Delta style e-trikes. They are high center of gravity (top heavy). This however is not the same case with all etrikes. A recumbent trike (also known as a tadpole style) works differently. 2 wheels up front, 1 wheel in back. Center of gravity is much lower. Stability is much greater. BTW, those are goatheads & Star-thisles and they suck! They are the nemesis to our tires on the trails here in California.
The edges of pavement , cement or ashfelt .. also lots of cables ftom power poles and i cant tell you how many old ancors from old power poles are still sticking up
My wife slipped off the side of a raised gravel road when cars were passing her, she was not going fast and paying attention, sometimes it just happens. She's O K though !
I've wrecked 3 times in 2 years. The first 2 I slammed my head, which the helmet saved. My last crash came when I went off a cement trail to the grass and when I went back to the cement the edge was too high and I slammed my knee. It's been almost 3 months and my knee is still messed up. I'm 66 and I haven't ridden since the accident as I can't get my bike up my steps with my knee.
I would suggest you find out what city/state dept. has responsibility for the walkway and the metal pipes and send a link to your video to the and a copy to their legal dept. both the raised and un3ven sidewalk and the unprotected piles pose a serious danger to anyone using the sidewalk. They need to b3 advised and put on notice.
Holy moly Russ. I am so sorry you fell. Wow. I just saw the intro and now am watching the whole thing. So scary to watch the footage. Another good reason not to ride sidewalks. We had a raised sidewalk in our yard at our last house. I fell off it often just walking!
Such a skinny path to be riding, that's one path you have to stay in the middle and keep your eyes on the path. I'm glad you're alright with no serious damage to you or the bike.
Russ, I am impressed by all of the people who responded with well wishes and thanked Joe as well. I know the trike didn't cause the accident but stay on the ebikes we all still need you. I didn't like the look of the hills, and the sidewalk looked dangerous.
Hey Russ! Thanks for "officially"introducing your channel to the group last night! I appreciate your "user error" honesty in this review. Keep up the good work in your reviews and safe riding!
Thank God for Joe! Cause those other vehicles just drove by not stopping to help! How selfish! Trikes are way more dangerous than bikes, instead of safer! So glad you were not seriously injured Russ... Stick to ebikes is my advice Russ and your sister too! From a 78 yr old cyclist with thousands of kms a year and for the last 2 yrs ebiker. JP
2-year-olds ride trikes. I do not think they are less safe. Trikes ride differently than 2-wheelers and require taking time to learn to ride and retrain responses. Russ was a novice rider, on an unfamiliar. uneven surface, going fast for the conditions. A recipe for disaster.
WOW Russ glad you are OK!,,, I`m 61 and half and have a ebike and on my third ride fell stopping in the drive way.I have weak knees I put my foot out and down I went the leg did knot hold,, I have a 26" inseam so I am real short. and I have to lean one way or the other to touch the ground,,, I`ve had a cycle endorsement sent I was 16 and a ebikes center of gravity is different. Stay safe my friend
My first fall (I've had four now) was basically the same as yours. I was in the crosswalk of a street and stopped and my left leg (the one with the knee replacement) could not hold my weight and the weight of the bike... so I fell down. Nobody in the cars helped and they all saw me fall. Oh well... people never want to get involved it seems (except for Joe, who was a good guy, stopping to help me). I now tell people not to get on an ebike until their leg is fully strong enough after any kind of surgery.
Am I wrong to guess that this channel will NOT feature other e trikes in the future? BTW, that sidewalk would have caused you to fall on a regular bike if you get too close to the edge.
Well, this fall was not the trikes issue. I should have known to be more vigilant about the wider rear wheels. Of course, a bike's wheel would be directly behind me and not to the side.
Send your video to the local paper and ask them to take this up with the works department. This walkway and those stanchions have murder written all over them. Really, that needs a fast revamp and you may just make it happen and save the next customer.😊
@@danlascelle1880 I bet it's rarely used, they had to put it there cause the roadway is just too narrow and dangerous for bikes. In all fairness, I have seen worse sidewalks in older cities and towns with littel money for repairs and maintenance.
Good job Joe! After watching your first video going up that hill on that horrible sidewalk, I figured your incident you were talking about was likely on your way back down. Those steel pipes need to go. I can't figure out what purpose the serve, other than danger to the sidewalk users. Even someone walking could trip on one of those gaps and fall into the pipes.
Had a lot of ebikes and learned quite a bit. Through a shattered hip and broken ribs, I tell people to ask me, cause I have made all the mistakes. The 2 most important lessons? 4 inch tires add height. You may get what you feel will be right for you, but it's MUCH taller. Also, a large enough tire is important. These motorized skateboards that have tiny tires are nuts. 20 inch is fine, but not the thin type. 4 inch is better.
Glad you're okay Russ, I took a fall earlier this summer and had a lump on my leg for 2 months. I was riding with one hand, I've learned not to do that anymore.
Thank you. I’ve always been a strong proponent of wearing helmets while cycling. For whatever reason I’ve become more fall prone. Not my class 1 ebike’s fault but did elevate my concern about a head injury. I was impressed by your helmet and have decided to purchase one. Yes maybe costs a little more but when it my safety particularly head safety the helmet is well worth the price. BTW whenever a helmet of any brand has been in a crash it should be replace
Riding a trike is something you need to learn it’s definitely a different experience than riding a bike. I go back-and-forth between trikes and bikes and feel secure on both at this point it becomes second nature, but it is a skill that needs to be learned. It’s not instantaneous. But what happened to you Was more situational awareness if you drove off that lip on two wheeler, the outcome probably would’ve been the same glad to see you all right scary situation
The geometry of trikes are very unique. So much so that Gas-engine trikes were outlawed, in the... 80's? We had 2 of them. You could still RIDE them, but they were pulled from sale at a certain point. The big, knobby tired trikes were very fun -but tricky to balance. When they tipped past the balance point! A LOT of trike went over, as in 400+ pounds.
@@RussIsRight Its more weight, but yes, I think if they keep the track (width of wheels) reasonable... wide enough for stability, but slim enough to get through most situations! I think the power required naturally goes up, but dual hub motors and plenty of room for big or multiple batteries. They would be awesome, but expensive, and weight quickly can get out of control. Consider: Big, heavy machine, needs big brakes, right? Big brakes add more weight themselves. Still I think these could be King of the Road machines! Cadillac and Lincoln might want a branding deal! 🤔😏
i have the L20 SE which has a similar basket...its very top heavy when attached to the front...couldnt get my balance...removed the basket and everything was perfect
Glad you’re ok. That was a factor with buying an Xnito helmet, for me, that it’s rated for good speed and they stand behind their product. I monitor my rides, and on fast rides I wear a full face helmet, but I saw even on short little blips over to the grocery or to pick up food, I’d often hit 30 mph on many rides. I’m very glad for you that you brought a helmet with you. I shake my head at rental bike or scooter riders hauling donkey with no helmet, in flip flops, on a crowded downtown sidewalk.
The Delta type trike has a much higher center of gravity and when you start tilting and it's much more unstable than a lower center of gravity (A Tadpole Trike). Delta trikes are best for flat ground.
I have ONLY dropped my tall, 82 pound Okai Ranger EB50 on a set of paved switchbacks that go steeply uphill and are narrow with drop offs on both sides. How? Going TOO SLOW uphill, losing the balance that forward motion provides. Hand grip damage like here, but little damage otherwise to the bike. As to myself, mostly hurt was just my pride, lol, But instead of losing my nerve, I have been back there a few times. Maybe I shouldn't push my luck! Glad you weren't more seriously hurt, no joke how bad that COULD have been.
Yikes! Pleased to hear you are ok, and how lucky for you you that your "new friend" Joe was there to help. As a soon to be new ebike rider, I will re-think the helmet I will get and add gloves. Thanks for the warning.
On some CA bike routes, they route you onto the sidewalk going up steep grades, but on the downgrade, they route you onto the street where you can take the whole lane (pretty easy to keep up with traffic on a steep downgrade).
I wonder if a tadpole trike would have the same steering issues as the delta you were riding. I would think that steering would be a bit more stable with a tadpole, since two wheels rather than one do work. Just curious - have you ever ridden a tadpole style trike?
Yah, we call that a “Yard Sale”. Very chagrined for this! I can’t help but wonder if your new watch had a Crash, Fall Detection or SOS features? I’ve resisted the Apple Watch for ten years but I have one arriving on Tuesday.
@@RussIsRight Honestly Russ, after seeing this video I feel better about ordering the watch. I’m going back two models to Series 8 to save money and it still has the blood oxygen sensor. I have a minor issue with A-fib and I can track this as well.
Helmet: I fell backward getting off my RADCity becasue I caught my foot on the back carrier. My head hit the pavement so hard it brought the neighbor running over. Without my helmet there is no doubt my head would have been split wide open. Also, a couple of years later I put my right foot down to hold up but the ground was too low so I fall over off my XPrremium. The pedal cut a big hole in my shin. After that I lowered the seat so my feet hit the ground while I on the seat. So.. two falls, both serious, both happened while zero forward motion. And both would have been serious except but saved by helmet!
Another commenter mentioned a e-bike brand named Tris. The 2 wheel part is in front and they tilt. MUCH better, safer design. If you need a trike you should check it out. If I get to the point I don't feel stable enough on two wheels I may get one of these.
Those look like casual street shoes. One of your sponsors should hook you up with something more appropriate. That path isn’t engineered for wheeled vehicles. Glad you are OK. Now California has a new species (the face plant). I broke my hip falling off a standard touring bike almost a decade ago, and haven’t been back in the saddle since.
Yeah, I had debated on shoes, but my luggage was so packed up with gear and clothes that I decided to not bring the shoes I usually ride with. I figured, "It's a trike. What could possibly happen??" Famous last words...
Speaking of falls, my son took a bike ride around Mackinaw Island and started up a steep hill. I decided it was too steep so tried to dismount the bike. The dang bike started moving, and I started hoping trying to keep up but couldn't and fell over on my right shoulder: it's still not right now. This was in mid October of 2024.
Hey Russ! Happy to help, and glad you are ok! Next time you're out here I can recommend some good routes nearby. Cheers!

That was some VERY nasty fall. Those thorny things look really dangerous to say nothing about those pipes sticking up from the ground. Glad you survived. Love my Xnito helmet, thanks to you.
👍
Glad you're ok! Thanks for looking out Joe!
Glad you doing better and recovering. Thank you for your videos
Thanks!
Stay safe!
The edges of pavement , cement or ashfelt .. also lots of cables ftom power poles and i cant tell you how many old ancors from old power poles are still sticking up
😳
My wife slipped off the side of a raised gravel road when cars were passing her, she was not going fast and paying attention, sometimes it just happens. She's O K though !
I've wrecked 3 times in 2 years. The first 2 I slammed my head, which the helmet saved. My last crash came when I went off a cement trail to the grass and when I went back to the cement the edge was too high and I slammed my knee. It's been almost 3 months and my knee is still messed up. I'm 66 and I haven't ridden since the accident as I can't get my bike up my steps with my knee.
🙁
I would suggest you find out what city/state dept. has responsibility for the walkway and the metal pipes and send a link to your video to the and a copy to their legal dept. both the raised and un3ven sidewalk and the unprotected piles pose a serious danger to anyone using the sidewalk. They need to b3 advised and put on notice.
FR, save any risk to others
Holy moly Russ. I am so sorry you fell. Wow. I just saw the intro and now am watching the whole thing. So scary to watch the footage. Another good reason not to ride sidewalks. We had a raised sidewalk in our yard at our last house. I fell off it often just walking!
Scary stuff.
Such a skinny path to be riding, that's one path you have to stay in the middle and keep your eyes on the path. I'm glad you're alright with no serious damage to you or the bike.
I think the camera is making it look skinny. It was wide enough for the trike. It's a standard sidewalk width.
Glad you are ok Russ, that was quite a nasty fall.
Thanks!
Very scary, you are very lucky it was not worse. So glad you are ok.
👍
Glad to see you're well, Russ!
Thanks!
I bought and wear my Xnito based on your review. This shows why. Glad you are fine, Russ!
Xnito definitely save me.
Glad to see your okay, my friend, take care out there!
So glad to hear you are alright. I'm ordering an Xnito helmet right now (using your link and code, of course!).
Thanks. And thanks for the Xnito order!
One thing that can help out with this is getting a recumbent tadpole trike. less chance of falling and if you do your closer to the ground.
So glad your ok. What's with those pikes? They can kill some one. What about grand rails instead? That is crazy!
Yeah, those pipes really need to go!
Russ, I am impressed by all of the people who responded with well wishes and thanked Joe as well. I know the trike didn't cause the accident but stay on the ebikes we all still need you. I didn't like the look of the hills, and the sidewalk looked dangerous.
I have the best subscribers and viewers!
Hey Russ! Thanks for "officially"introducing your channel to the group last night! I appreciate your "user error" honesty in this review. Keep up the good work in your reviews and safe riding!
Thanks for watching the video and for subscribing! Yeah... this fall was a close one.
@ACCollins-gc5ze I don’t think I was going fast. Going down hill is going to speed you up. I was riding the brakes.
I agree with you Pedro. That has to be the worst sidewalk that I have ever seen.
Good guess. Yes, those poles have been there so long, they are rusted. At this point they serve no real purpose other than being a potential hazard.
Glad you are OK.
Thanks!
Russ I'm glad you are ok my friend
Thanks!
Glad you are ok!!
Thanks!
Glad your ok Russ. Paid your dues.
Yes. This is the fourth fall for me from ebikes/etrikes.
@@RussIsRight Your paying too much 😉
Had a lot of ebikes and learned quite a bit.
Yeah, two hands is safer than one. One hand is better than none. 😊
Glad to hear you're relatively okay. I guess I should start looking into a helmet.
Yes... definitely!
Well done Joe!
😊
Thanks. Yea, always replace a crashed helmet.
Maybe trikes have to change a la the 3 wheelers? Put the tires in front.
They did that with motorized trikes, now they are called quads. Simply because they were dangerous.
Scary stuff.
Omg I'm so sorry, you took it so well
Such excitement.
Maybe instead of trikes, we need four wheel versions. What do you think?
@@RussIsRight Its more weight, but yes, I think if they keep the track (width of wheels) reasonable... wide enough for stability, but slim enough to get through most situations! I think the power required naturally goes up, but dual hub motors and plenty of room for big or multiple batteries. They would be awesome, but expensive, and weight quickly can get out of control. Consider: Big, heavy machine, needs big brakes, right? Big brakes add more weight themselves. Still I think these could be King of the Road machines! Cadillac and Lincoln might want a branding deal! 🤔😏
👍
That Mooncool is one tough trike!
Held up just fine!
i have the L20 SE which has a similar basket...its very top heavy when attached to the front...couldnt get my balance...removed the basket and everything was perfect
Oh man! Thank God you are okay.
👍
Glad you’re ok. That was a factor with buying an Xnito helmet, for me, that it’s rated for good speed and they stand behind their product. I monitor my rides, and on fast rides I wear a full face helmet, but I saw even on short little blips over to the grocery or to pick up food, I’d often hit 30 mph on many rides. I’m very glad for you that you brought a helmet with you. I shake my head at rental bike or scooter riders hauling donkey with no helmet, in flip flops, on a crowded downtown sidewalk.
Helmets and gloves are a must! Doesn't take much to have a potential fall.
Thanks for the helmet discount.
😊
So glad you are okay, that was really fighting. Years ago I rode a tree wheel bike and yes much different than a two wheel.
@wendycamp307 What kind of trees were the wheels made from?
@AHoundOnAHonda ?
@RussIsRight Russ, just asking wendycamp about their "tree wheel bike" 😉
@@AHoundOnAHonda hahahahahhaahhahahaha 😂😂
@@wendycamp307 😄😉
Glad that you're okay. You look younger with the weight loss.
Thanks. The weight loss really does feel better.
Better off with a cargo e-bike than an e-trike!
👍
Yikes! Pleased to hear you are ok, and how lucky for you you that your "new friend" Joe was there to help. As a soon to be new ebike rider, I will re-think the helmet I will get and add gloves. Thanks for the warning.
Yes, stay safe riding. You just never know when things can go bad!
On some CA bike routes, they route you onto the sidewalk going up steep grades, but on the downgrade, they route you onto the street where you can take the whole lane (pretty easy to keep up with traffic on a steep downgrade).
😳
Hope you heal up soon Russ. Looks pretty dry there. Hope you didn't leave it for your sister
She still has the etrike.
Glad your ok and didn't injure your knee!
👍
Yeah, cause the warranty on the knee replacement must have run out already.
Terrible warranty on the knee. 🤣
@@pedrofernandez8729lol😅
@@RussIsRight Besides there is a clause re the use of the knee during a trip out of state to try out an e trike. Read the fine print, will ya?
I would make an appointment with my doctor to check for any other issues with the fall
I wonder if a tadpole trike would have the same steering issues as the delta you were riding. I would think that steering would be a bit more stable with a tadpole, since two wheels rather than one do work. Just curious - have you ever ridden a tadpole style trike?
I have not.
Falling onto a pipe would do serious injury. The city or county needs to remove those.
Yah, we call that a “Yard Sale”. Very chagrined for this! I can’t help but wonder if your new watch had a Crash, Fall Detection or SOS features? I’ve resisted the Apple Watch for ten years but I have one arriving on Tuesday.
I think only the Apple watch has this feature.
@@RussIsRight Honestly Russ, after seeing this video I feel better about ordering the watch. I’m going back two models to Series 8 to save money and it still has the blood oxygen sensor. I have a minor issue with A-fib and I can track this as well.
My mom has 1 i hate it never felt stable i prefer my recumbent closer to the ground and with 2 wheels in front fairly hard to roll
New machines always have a learning curve. Unfortunately. 😮
Trike's and 911's. Drop a wheel ,naturally let up and ......Funny Porsche does sell an ebike.
Glad you came through relatively unscathed Russ.
Thanks!
😳
One of the more common causes of senior falls is getting off when stopping. The reason i sold my bike. The trike avoids this.
