Re the 6 min ave watch time…I’m 100% on your side on this issue but when you don’t have clarity of facts about the tragic accident or say “I’m not on top of the world right now and haven’t done research” and “I THINK it’s 20mph for class 1, maybe it’s a little lower…” (class 1 & 2 are 20mph) right around the 6 min mark, ppl will signed off. Your making a great point, don’t apologize or discount your intended message which has great points about helmets and “undefined e-bikes”! E-bikes are bringing people back to a great mode of commuting or exercising, keep making great arguments and educating so the uninformed politicians don’t make uneducated, knee-jerk reactions to a great evolution of biking.

I get it, but stuff like this more a matter of emotional reaction and attempt to appease public outrage than trying for monetary gain. I think they are more concerned about losing local votes if they appear to have done nothing.
That being said, an outright ban is definitely an over reaction, hopefully with enough communication with the local ebike community can lift the ban and help implement more rational regulations.

@@Robert-jd6po first off let me say thank you for watching Robert. And thank you for putting a crossed a reasonable debate. Secondly, it is written in the state statutes that local municipalities can control their sidewalks and bike paths and restrict them from ebikes. They are also doing this on public roads. Thirdly, and make no mistake. My prayers are with the family of the person who passed. But they are using. This is nothing but a weapon. They are completely swept under the rug that she was not wearing a helmet. When someone tried to bring up this fact in a town meeting discussing this, they were booed out and escorted out by the police. That is not sound like people are looking for change for the betterment of everyone. That has more ringing of a mob. And lastly, the state statute defines what is an E bike. If in fact they were having problems with the youth in this town. I can almost promise you it is not on what is legally defined as an E bike. So instead of taking care of true culprits, they have decided to throw a blanket over everything. This is my problem with what they are doing in this town. Not completely sure of the legality of banning these on the road. Because defined E bikes are considered the same as a bicycle, with the same rights. That would be kind of like banning a blue Mustang, because one was in an accident. I do not believe the law allows you to react that way. Again, thank you for watching.

I live in downtown Memphis TN. I walked to the post office last Saturday to mail a letter. Two 4-wheelers sped up behind me and missed me by inches ON THE SIDEWALK. Ebikes are being singled out for bullying. -- I am just now looking into getting an ebike as an alternate means of getting to work (8 miles each way). With 2 bad knees and a heart condition, an ebike is the only way biking will be possible at all. But, I have to use alternate transportation on Fridays. Twice now, I've nearly had a heart attack chasing a city bus because it blew right past the stop like I wasn't even there, waving down the driver even. I think the message is: Drive a car, buy gas/oil, and buy insurance, or lose your job... or just die on the side of the road anyway, chasing a effing bus that ignores you. WoW! Your comment was so interesting to read because I live in a small-town MI and have the same medical issues, as well as others. I've been looking into E-bikes for years and became more determined lately because the city bus system not only seem to hate to see me coming with my electric or manual wheelchairs... meaning the driver will have to buckle them down, get up out of thier seats, and possible be late getting to connecting buses for their transfers. They absolutely been late before they ever got to my stop, and I have even gone so far as to sit on the seat, so they can do the least, yet they use me as an excuse,
Also, they have recently changed the whole bus schedule after getting the whole whatever extra funds for Covid where we were able to ride for free, they then decided that they could not find any new drivers, so they are now not running on the weekends, stopping all rides at 3pm, instead of 6pm, and only running every hour, not half hour. They took out many stops and have gone through so many drivers who they claim did not have the right attitude for the work. Of course it was all the kind, polite ones that go so quickly.
Anywho I elect to use my manual chair so that I can use my legs and get up to stretch, get my blood flowing, and work up a good heart rate, as I have AFIB. I wonder if I could handle riding an E-Bike but it's my last opportunity to stay active, get out sometimes to get away from a neighbor who illegally smokes in the apt under me. As I have a few disabilities working against me, I am very concerned that this is just another way to dive into the elderly's funds and keep us reliant in a way that they can track us and any money we get. Someone at the bus garage has the driver of bus i get on call in and let them know every time I get on the bus, by stating where I got on, if I got a transfer, where I'm transferring to, and where I'm getting off. So, this a way of tracking people, where the bikes would give us our freedom & independence back, if I can tolerate it on my spine.
Lastly, I just saw a video where a guy is showing how he just built an E-Bike to go up to 100 miles an hour, SO? Can you imagine what these younger ones could get away with when it comes to police chasing them? I think it would be best the to give more work to construction and road workers to build certain areas that are more bikers only, and bike friendly, so the traffic would be better between them. May restrictions for certain ones on certain paths, but we just can't have the U.S. fighting for climate control, for cleaner air, only to make it cost more than driving, or as much. That seems very counterproductive and lacks respects or concerns for the seniors who need it most.

Throttles have nothing to do with safety. On a Class 2 ebike, the throttle can push the bike to 20 mph and no more. On an acoustic bike, I peddle to 25mph easily. And most of the time I go 20mph. Problem is that the police are not even enforcing hemets for kids. They don’t enforce laws that keep kids from riding double and even triple. They don’t enforce the laws that keep people from riding in the wrong direction. They don’t enforce the age limits on underage riding. A 10 year old should not be on an e-bike. So of course the answer is to ban all ebikes instead of enforcing the laws they do have.

How can a servant serve when no one is telling them what they need to do. I would like to say because of all this they just do the best they can. But I think more accurate would be because of this. Riding on a "bike path " that is full of pedestrians acting like squirrels on the path is dangerous. Its really a multiuser path. People need to quit throwing a blanket over every E bike out there. I have had road cyclist with her head down for aerodynamics in groups of four and five come past us at almost double our speed while on the Neuse River Trail. That does not mean I get the right to throw a blanket statement over every cyclist about how they’re not paying attention just for aerodynamics. do you see where I’m coming from on this? My wife is a hiker and has had her group have to jump out of the way of regular cyclist. Would it be fair for hikers to throw a blanket statement and say no more cycles allowed? Or I have ridden most of the cycleways in the wake county area. One time, I saw what appeared to be a suron. Quite honestly, that is the only time I have ever saw a bike that appears like it was built to be used with throttle primarily on any other Greenways in that area. I am not saying there are not some bikers out there that are using their throttle. But overall in the over 3000 miles I have traveled on cycleways I have not seen much of an issue like I am hearing some people complain about. I am glad you are doing your best to bring attention to this important matter. The one aspect that I did not see addressed was the fact that many of these types of accidents could have been avoided if municipalities would have invested in the proper infrastructure to enable safer riding. How many of us end up riding on the sidewalks because there are no bike lanes on the road? How many accidents have occurred where distracted drivers hit bicyclist on busy streets where there is no other way to ride a bike. I am seeing municipalities replacing their narrow sidewalks with multi-purpose paths which are wide enough to support bicyclist and pedestrians., but this takes money and often times other needs win out. So, it will take decades to get the proper infrastructure in place. Many European countries are way ahead of us on the infrastructure they provide. I recently visited Vancouver and was amazed at the fact that they have dedicated and entire car lane in the most congested area of the city to allow for bicycles & ebikes to travel in. It has reduced downtown traffic by 50% and the significantly improved their air quality. It was very controversial at first, but now everyone loves it. I think as more and more people adopt e-bikes government will have to take notice. It would probably be a good idea to get all government officials to ride an e-bike for a couple of weeks and then make their decisions.

The gray area is two wheel vehicles with more than 750 watt motors that do have pedals to avoid registering as a motorcycle and insurance. Then additionally not having turn signals and things to be road legal. I don’t know what regulations are for mopeds, but these seem to fit in that category.
I did build a trike that has a 750 watt motor and can throttle to 28mph which is not in any defined class. I usually am pedaling around 10 mph and only use the throttle to get across streets. The trike I ride the most has a 500 watt motor and only delivers 50% output to the throttle, so the motor can assist to 20mph, but the throttle only goes to 10mph. I initially didn’t have the throttle but added it later after I had an incident where I couldn’t pedal and was in the woods with a lot of mosquitoes that could suddenly keep up with me.

In the USA, ebikes can travel alot faster than in the UK and Europe which is dangerous on shared paths. In the UK you are limited to motor assistance upto 15.5 mph and a 250W motor. You can get more powerful motors but it becomes classed as a scooter , not allowed on cycle paths and requires a licence , insurance etc.
On top of the above, there are quite a few videos on youtube in america of thrill seeking youngsters riding wrecklessly on insanely powerful ebikes which are really e motorbikes, putting pedals on them to fool the police, hitting speeds of around 50mph.
An ebike can weigh alot, especially when you add the weight of the rider which will be lethal if hits anyone at speed, a helmet wont help much on who they hit, especially a fragile old woman.

Getting my kid to school in the back, commuting to work 10 miles, returning to pick up my son, buy some groceries etc. I could spend weeks without needing to start my car. The same my other son, who was 13-14 at that time. I bought him a high power and high range ebike and he used it as a means of transport. He could make as much as 40-60 miles per day visiting friends, going to the skatepark, going to adjacent towns to hang out on the pier or have ice cream etc. He made around 8000 miles in one year and made a lot of friends with whom he was able to explore the area. This was our perfect time: no gasoline, no traffic jams, no noise etc. But then, suddenly, cops started enforcing ebike laws and instead of giving warnings or even some low fines ($60 or so) they started impounding the ebikes immediately. You needed to pay around $300 to get your ebike back. Kids were in despair because their daily routine, their friendships got cut abruptly. Many parents, including me, decided to factor in the cost of impound into the ebike usage, assuming no more than one impound every 2 months. So guess what... They raised the price to around $1500. So the kids started driving cars and the fun was gone.

@@johnrob3215 The thing is that in the US ebikes are classified by speed, power and presence of pedals. The limits are so low that they basically convert a legal bike into a toy instead of something that might soon replace a car in warmer climates and short distances. If I were to be legal, my bike would be unusable for the most important thing which is replacing a car. So my bike is bigger, has really a lot of batteries, thick tires etc. I have around 100 miles of range. So I used it for around 3 years to go with my wife to the beach, take my son to school, go shopping etc. I used it not apart from a car but INSTEAD and this is probably a pain in the ass for the government (no registration tax, no fuel tax etc.). So one day I got stopped as I was dropping off my son to school and got a citation for operating a motorcycle because the officer assumed it is one. He immediately told me that if he assumed it's a motorcycle then I would be cited for not having a motorcycle license, cited for not having motorcycle insurance. A total of $1200. I am glad the judge thought that these assumptions are ridiculous and cancelled everything but you see the trend.
The good things about ebikes is that they are quiet, don't release fumes and you can ride along the beach and people don't mind, you can go right down to the beach and people don't mind etc. But cops do mind. An alternative to a car is a big no-no because there's no money for the state.

People try to pass them of as "electric bicycle" but many go (well) over the speed limit for that category (25 km/h), and some if not most have a throttle so you don't have to pedal yourself (which also makes it not an electric bicycle). There's no minimum age for electric bicycles in NL. But these fatbikes are in reality really a speed pedelec or electric moped, and there's lots of restrictions on that: must be 16 or older, must have a moped driving licence, must wear a helmet, must wear a number plate, must be insured. But the country isn't enforcing this enough. There's so many kids riding these things, and Dutch cycling culture doesn't include a helmet unless you're cycling for sports for which you'd use a road bicycle and usually go out with others and only if you're quite fit. No way that a 13 year old should be allowed to operate a vehicle in public that can go 50 or even 70 km/h (they're all juiced up). They are not mature enough to understand the risk. No one riding such a vehicle wears a helmet. At a young age they don't have enough experience in traffic (through years of using a pedal bicycle) to safely drive something so fast. There's accidents with them ALL the time, often injuring other people too. They're often driven on the cycle path where the typical pedal cyclist goes 14 km/h and they'll zip by at 30, 40 or even faster. Unreal, and should either be super enforced or just outright banned simply seizing every vehicle like this that's on the public road. Note that in the case you discuss about the older lady dying: if she's on a pedal bicycle doing 12 km/h or even 17 km/h if she can go that fast, there's no need for a helmet if she's cycling on paved roads (and not dirt roads). No way that she should have to wear a helmet because a stronger road user doesn't obey the law or know how to control their vehicle. As a pedestrian we cross the street all the time but you're not asking all pedestrians to wear a helmet in case a cyclist rides into them.

I live in Germany near Freiburg ( Black Forest). I'm from north of San Francisco and we bicycled everywhere. Helmets became a thing later during late 1980s, usually recommended from people who crashed their bikes racing and running red lights. If you are that irresponsible you should get trained like a car driver gets.
I bicycle commute 100 percent of the time, age 58, no ebike, trekking/touring bike.
Okay, so children are riding these ebikes, no helmets and I hope they are smart enough to know about adrenaline and not to think about being invincible or invisible 😅.
Adults ride ebikes to work: one guy rides with no hands on the handlebars, and no helmet. I don't wear a helmet, but I seldom speed up and only when the street is clear of any sudden changes.
Being careful, paying attention, and remembering to follow the flow and rules.
The guys on road bikes wear helmets but most people don't.

Greetings from the Netherlands. Over half of the bikes sold here are now e-bikes. There has been an increase of fatal accidents amongst cyclists here recently (see the latest video by BicycleDutch), but most of these involved cyclists being hit by motor vehicles, so the answer seems to be more infrastructure that separates cyclists from drivers. A lot of the fatalities involved e-bikes, and a lot of older people ride e-bikes, so there has been some discussion about how to increase safety, but a ban on e-bikes would be unthinkable, and I can't see helmets ever becoming compulsory either. Most Dutch adults have personal liability insurance, but this isn't particularly related to cycling. I pay about $5 a month for mine, so it isn't prohibitively expensive. And of course a lot of people insure their e-bikes against theft and damage anyway. The government and local municipalities are always looking for ways to increase cycling and reduce motor traffic, so a ban on e-bikes (or making helmets compulsory) would really go against this. They also recognise that the benefits of cycling, not just for the health of individuals but also for the economy and the environment, far outweigh the problems caused by accidents.
That's a lovely cycle path you're on, btw.
(One last slightly unrelated thing. As a European I find it crazy that any American politician should want to ban e-bikes from a place that is awash with guns, ownership of which is fairly unrestricted and which are actually designed to kill people. Maybe you need a constitutional amendment to say that the right of Americans to ride e-bikes 'shall not be infringed'.)

Sounds like a great reason to collect a local registration fee, and implement regulations. E-bikes are no more dangerous than regular bikes if ridden properly. But the government always feels they can legislate common sense. I live in NH, and they were one of the first to enact e-bike laws that made sense. But there’s no money in that. Thanks for sharing. This is more than a rush to judgement of ebikers, which isn't new. Ebikers appear to always be guilty. Unfortunately, anything on 2 wheels, even if they have a gas engine, are considered ebikes by some people. (not suggesting the 12 year old wasn't on an ebike) The fact that a 12 year old was on the bike seems more relevant than the fact that it was an ebike. Not sure why they allow kids under the age to be able to hold a drivers license to have access to an ebike. The news article I just read on this accident stated the community is "fed up" with kids ignoring the rules of the road. The key word in the article was "kids" and "ignoring the rules" -- not what they are riding. I can count on both my and my husbands hands how many times someone on a non-ebike almost crashed into us going faster than they should, or not paying attention -- and this is on rail trails! Agree that we need to start letting our representatives know that ebikes are NOT the issue -- it's the riders who need to be policed.

With e-bikes now reaching automobile speeds, mixing e-bikes and pedestrians, including the young children and the elderly, just doesn't seem safe. Not everyone on an e-bike is a safe, defensive rider. Not every pedestrian is observant wathcing out for bikes. Do we need laws to enforce this? @@mckenziemd I appreciate you watching, and I appreciate that you have chimed in with a thought-provoking comment. My response would be, you have to look at what is defined as an E bike in the law, versus what people are calling a motorized bicycle that they sell. The vast majority of problems are caused by people that are riding Ebikes, that are not falling under the legal definition of an electric assisted bicycle. So they need to start there. A class one E bike is only capable of 20 mph and that is only when you’re peddling it. This is the typical speed that a regular bicycle rides at. I would not have any problem if they would have regulations on bikes that do not fall under the legal definition of an E bike in their particular state. That would be the place to start, not banning all E bikes. Just as a guess, I am pretty sure over 60% of what the industry is selling as a ebike does not fall under the legal classification in most states. Start there. Again, thanks for watching.

I regularly hike & (pedal) bike on a local long distance trail near me and I have had a few concerning encounters with e-bikes. The trail isn't narrow but people do need to be aware of oncoming traffic. In addition, there are several curves - not sharp but there is limited visibility to oncoming traffic. I pedal at about 15 miles per hour on my bike and I am able to keep aware so that I don't surprise anyone. I don't think I would want to go any faster on the parts of the trail where visibility is limited.
The encounters that I have had with e-bikes has been with people going a little too fast for those sections of the trail. I think the bikes were at least class 2 as I have seen people "motoring" without pedaling. There haven't been accidents that I am aware of but people do need to watch their speed for the safety of others. I also suspect that the advent of ebikes is allowing people who normally would not bike to "just go" - that IS a good thing, but I don't think those people appreciate the safety aspect of riding at those somewhat fast speeds. Pedal bikes naturally limit them.
I would at least like to see some sort of mandatory safety training for ebike owners. I know that would not cure every concern, but I do think most people would be reasonable if they were made aware of the concerns.

Thank you for watching and for a well thought out comment. The majority of e-bikers that I see in this area are older individuals or couples out for a leisure ride so I rarely see them going more than about 15 miles an hour. My wife and I stay right about that as an average. My wife is also a regular hiker. Our experience in this area has actually been that more road cyclists are traveling fast then ebikers. I understand that they do have quite a little experience. But they are also riding with her head down for aerodynamics so they do not see far in front of them. They also do not warn people when they pass by as they don't want the weight of a bell on their bike. And do not slow down very often because they do not want to lose the momentum they have build up. I'm not trying to make a case that e-bikers are safer than road bikers. I am just saying, it is an individual thing where people don't necessarily use what used to be called common sense, but is no longer very common. So I think the argument could be made both ways. I very often hear about people going around throttling e-bikes. But I honestly have not seen very much of that. We have traveled well over 3,000 miles in the Mid-Atlantic on mostly bike trails. Maybe this is going on out on the roads, maybe we've just been fortunate that we've not run across much of it. I would agree with you though, education is a good thing for anybody. Well I may need to add in that is good if it's real education. Lol and not propaganda. Again thank you very much for watching and thank you for a well thought out and respectful debate. Way too little of that here on TH-cam. Enjoy your evening.

Sounds to me like a misunderstanding of what e-bikes are. They assist pedaling, they don't replace it. You have to pedal an e-bike to get it going, and keep pedaling. The "e" in e-bikes just means it's a little easier. Here in Norway, at least, there is a 25 kmp maximum assist - after that the assist stops. Bikes and scooters that move entirely on their own using electric power are different. I can understand wanting to ban them from paths where typically people walk and bike in places where there are users who bike way too fast and don't show consideration for pedestrians. But e-bikes (the e-assist kind) should be allowed in all places where regular bikes are allowed. There are no real grounds for making a distinction.

I'm 64, partially disabled, and I ride for exercise, and enjoyment, of course. I don't wanna fly around at 45 mph. If I need to go that fast I'll jump in my car or buy another motorcycle if I wanna do it on two wheels.
Also, when there are people out there riding like maniacs, and there obviously are some, it sure doesn't help the rest of us that ride e-bikes. I see TH-cam videos of guys flying around doing the 'lane-splitting' in traffic, and totally disregarding stop signs and other traffic controls. That obviously irritates a lot of people, probably most people, and some do call the cops. After the cops get enough calls it becomes a problem for all of us.
I also fly drones, and there are people that draw negative attention to that activity, too. I was just reading the post of a professional drone pilot the other day. He said the police have been to his home on three different occasions (after being called) because some kid in the area flies his drone through the neighborhood and very near homes, and since people know the professional flies drones, it surely must be him.

@@MyTube4Utoo thank you for watching. I agree 100%. I am out there to ride bicycle, but I need some assistance while doing so. If I wanted a motorcycle, I can surely afford any kind out there. You are also correct and that the industry is calling anything with electric motor a e-bike. I set a couple of years ago that this was going to be a problem. And here we sat. They actually do have regulations in most states that say that electric bicycles, class 1, 2, and sometimes 3, are considered the same as bicycles. Of course the officials claimed the problem is they have no way of knowing what is what. I can see that as a problem.
You also touched on another big problem. That is the Public perception of electric bikes. Most will recognize an e-bike when it flies past them at high rates of speed. When someone on an electric bicycle passes them respectfully say on a bike trail they do not even realize they were passed by an electric bike. They just think all electric bikes are the super fast, crazy kids riding them. These people also go to town meetings. We have spoken several times about how respectful most people are on e-bikes in our area, compared to regular cyclist on the bike trails. We will also be doing a video on this soon. But right along side of that, I see people on TH-cam. Some that I would consider TH-cam friends of mine, passing by people on bike trails at more than 20 mph without an audible warning. In general being disrespectful just so that they can continue doing their video. That is something else that is hurting us. Hopefully, most states will come up with some common sense regulations that are already on the books and figure out a good way of enforcement. The other option , would be for the United States to adopt a European type standard. This is not something that I would like to see happen. This is not a good solution, but I believe a happy medium may be that e-bikes that are pedal assist only are considered the same as bicycles. If they have any throttle, they are then into a new classification. Really not crazy about that solution, but it does seem like the most realistic solution considering some of the alternatives. Thank you for watching.

I’ve ridden bikes since I was 8. I am now in my 50s and still ride everything from mtb trails to rail trails. I remember fighting for trail access in my area forest service and blm land, and having to constantly clarify that mtb were not motorcycles. On my local rail trail and mtb trails, almost everyone who has an e bike will blast past families with small children, pets, or “slower” traffic with no regard. These trails are intended for non motorized traffic. I will NEVER ride an e bike. I do not mind slowing down in my later years. Asking for officials to differentiate between different classes of e bikes is ludicrous. Non motorized means no motor. E bikes in any form are a motorized vehicle and should only be on routes designated as such. Don’t like it? Get out and start advocating in your area for e bike specific trails and rules. Do the work. Get out and sweat and build those trails.
Oh, I also can’t stand road bikers that don’t follow road rules. I put thousands of miles a year on public roads and stop at stop signs, ped crossings, and follow the rules as I would driving. I have seen some really obnoxious riders in my day.

Well, that’s interesting what you see in your area. Because I see many more cyclist, passing ebikers. The vast majority of people on E bikes that I see here in the mid Atlantic are older couples, and or individuals who are out for a leisure ride to enjoy the outdoors. Maybe we should ban the cyclists that are going to fast

You must live a frustrating life living in a world where people don’t behave to your standards. All the lamplighters told folks that electricity was going to burn their towns to the ground and street lamps should only be touched by professionals. Law enforcement has real issues to take care of besides slow people being scared.

All roads should have a bike lane in and around city limits, bike riders are required to follow traffic rules as if they are any other vehicle so to keep everyone safe, my city does not allow bikes to be ridden on sidewalks and vehicles are required to pass bikes with a three foot clearance to the cyclist from the vehicle, but not all roads allow this much lane, so bike rider must keep up with traffic speeds if on a trike bike or ride in the curb drainage if on two wheels! Once upon a time there were no curb cuts for wheelchairs, now there are. It is up to us to merge new ideas with the future of biking. Excellent work Southern E-biking!

@@josephwoehlerii2855 thank you Joseph and thank you for watching. I agree with you. Unfortunately, this town has made this band a permanent ordinance. At this point, somebody’s going to have to fight it in court to get rid of it, and of course, nobody wants to go through that hassle. this is what a lot of unconstitutional ordinances are based on that they will do it until they get it thrown out because nobody wants to do the fighting.

When I see ebikes exceeding 35 mph on a path that parallels an industrial arterial in Seattle (with speed limit 35), it's clear something has to change. Our "multi-use paths" , typically 8 to 12 feet wide, are not designed for opposite-direction traffic streams separated only by a 4-inch yellow line, or often no line at all. There's less separation than between cars on a road, and bikes tend to wobble, and don't provide the steel cage protection in a collision. Pedestrians are happy to wear headphones and wander side to side so cyclists need to warn them but can't warn them. An 80-year old lady was knocked over, hit her head on the asphalt, and killed on a path in my metropolis by an adult cyclist (not on an ebike) about 8 years ago and the city promptly lowered the speed limit to 10 mph. I don't know if she turned at 90 degrees to the traffic stream, or it was the cyclist's fault. Really, the engineering community and politicians for the most part treat bikes as toys, and money is always tight, so pedestrians and bike riders are combined on the same roadway. They shouldn't be. Seattle's fifty-year-old Burke Gilman Trail (the original bike trail in Seattle) has been essentially unusable for cycling transportation much of the day for the past 30 years due to lackadaisical attitudes on the part of peds and parents with kids and pets as well as the volumes of users. Cyclists should be on a roadway either by themselves or with cars. Pedestrian-only infrastructure is needed in urban areas. Cyclist-only infrastructure should not have opposing traffic streams, and needs adequate shy distance from posts, fire hydrants, etc. And for the love of God, get rid of those bollard pipes in the middle of the trail that are supposedly there to keep cars off the trails. Sign it properly NO MOTOR VEHICLES and cyclists will keep the cars under control with cell phone reports, etc.

I guess things are just different on the entire mid-atlantic. I have never seen anybody doing 35 on a bike path. I rarely see anybody on ebikes that are built like the small motorcycles. When I say rarely I have seen one of these in over 3000 miles of traveling bike paths throughout the entire mid-atlantic. What I see more than anything is older couples. Or individuals out for a leisure ride. Typically traveling about 15 miles per hour.
I do see quite a few road. Cyclists coming past us very often.
Anyway, thanks for watching and enjoy your evening I. 'm not sure what the solution is. But it is certainly not banning

I just ordered a Rad Trail E bike. It comes with programable class 0-3. I looked at my City regulations. E-bikes on walks and paths are limited to 20 mph (class 2). Maximum wattage is 750. Class 3 Bikes are limited to streets and must follow all State motor vehicle regulations. The local university limits speeds on campus to 15 mph and in certain high volume pedestrian areas they are banned. Both the City and University require 3' clearance and audible warnings when passing pedestrians. State law does not allow anyone under 15 to ride a class 3 e-bike. Anyone under 18 is required to wear a helmet and operators are required to have an operators license.

I just bought an "electric assist"full-suspenion mtb. It's powerful no doubt. Most people don't understand how fast these go. Especially people who are regular cyclists. Mine is the mid motor that stops when you don't pedal. It only assists you when you pedal.

I'm 1000% for pedestrian safety awareness: how about banning earplugs/anything that prevents hearing one's surroundings? I don't know how often someone on foot is hurt because they're oblivious when, I for example, am trying to alert my intent to ride past? What I end up doing is stopping behind the ped until any other bikers pass me both directions. Only THEN do I go around so I have enough space ro safely continue. ARG!!!!
