I am Scottish, but Wales and the Welsh have a special place in my heart.
Their singing is a world treasure and Wales is beautiful.
Yes
The Welsh feel the same about Scottish people and their country. Thank you from Wales.
I could write the exact same sentence from a Welsh point of view.
Listen to any Welsh male voice choir.......there is something in their singing that cannot be matched, and it is always very moving.
It's a lovely anthem and sung by the Welsh people .... perfect!
I'm British (English), the Welsh are well known for being very good singers.
Hi Mark. We are huge fans of the Six Nations rugby matches. They are played a few weeks after Christmas. My Mum was Welsh so I support the Welsh team and every time I hear the Welsh anthem I'm reduced to tears: the beauty of the anthem, the excellent singing and memories of my Mum.
That is awesome thank you
That powerful 2013 rendition apparently scared the xxxx out of the England team. An England team that could afford to lose the game by I think 7 points and still win the Six Nations. One of the great Welsh performances ( and Alex Cuthbert's ) and they trounced England 30-3 Great game and what a great Welsh team/squad that was !
In the 1970s and 1980s the Welsh beat the English at rugby almost every year. The first international I went to was in 1973 at Cardiff Arms Park. I had never heard a crowd sing with such pride and passion. Glory days, and a glorious anthem. (By the way - I'm English but I treasure that experience).
Phil Bennett, Gareth Edwards, Barry John, JJ and JPR Williams (and others) - legends of the game!
Hi mark, i suggest you listen to yma o'hyd, the version with English lyrics
I got chills...they're multiplying!!
An English comment. You paricularly hear the Welsh skill in singing, when you hear "Gwlad! Gwlad! Pleidiol wyf i'm gwlad!' [True am I to my country.]'Wyf' is pronounced 'oiv'; did you hear the crowd harmonizing on that? And did you how high the Welsh male voices could get?
I believe the concept of 'gwlad', 'country and people', is very important to the Welsh.
You should try to learn some Welsh...
In 1905, New Zealand Rugby team came to Wales to play a game against Wales. It was the first time the two countries played against each other, New Zealand did the Haka as is customary and in response to the Haka, the Welsh players and the supporters sang Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau, what is now the National Anthem.
At the time it was not the National Anthem, it was just a song, at the time God Save the King was the National Anthem, this was the case for all of the UK, no other songs were “National Anthems” and at this time the National Anthem was not song before sporting events.
This response to the Haka at this game was is the reason the National Anthems are observed before all International sporting events such was the impact of it, however for the UK National teams, this meant having to sing God Save the King and for the Welsh as well as God Save the King, they had to sing God Save the Prince of Wales, but again, the Welsh fought this and sang Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau after they sang the other two and so it was agreed that they could sing Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau but only after they had sung the other two, still the Welsh pushed back, it had become a bit ridiculous having to go through doing 3 songs and so in 1975 the Welsh won and Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau was legally recognised as the National Anthem of Wales and the song that had just been a popular song 70 years earlier and was first sung before the game started as a response to the Haka had not only been the reason the national anthem is sung before all international sporting events but it also became the National Anthem of Wales.
I bet Evan James and James James, the writers of the song never expected that the song they wrote about 50 years earlier would go on to be sung which would result in a worldwide sporting tradition and also becoming the National Anthem of their country, lol
Wow great story. Thank you
Thank you. That is a wonderful story I knew nothing about. I vaguely remember stirring anthems before Welsh Rugby matches in the 1970s, when Wales beat pretty much everyone. (I'm English, but Wales were magnificent.)
Best Wishes. ☮
As good and as rousing as this is, in my opinion the singing at the rugby matches in Cardiff has diminished in quality.
The singing at the old Cardiff Arms Park used to be quite something, broadcasters would turn their microphone's on before the game to catch the singing.
I can recommend a video called A Nation Sings - Gamanfa Ganu 1963, Welsh choral singing at its best.
Mark. Thank you playing my national anthem. It sounds incredible with a home crowd in full flight, we are a Land of Song and Poetry. I used to work behind the stadium in the telephone exchange.
Here are the English translation of the words followed by the Welsh lyrics.
O Land of my fathers, O land of my love,
Dear mother of minstrels who kindle and move,
And hero on hero, who at honour's proud call,
For freedom their lifeblood let fall.
Chorus:
Country! Country! O but my heart is with you!
As long as the sea your bulwark shall be,
To Cymru my heart shall be true.
II
O land of the mountains, the bard's paradise,
Whose precipice, valleys are fair to my eyes,
Green murmuring forest, far echoing flood
Fire the fancy and quicken the blood
Chorus
III
For tho' the fierce foeman has ravaged your realm,
The old speech of Wales he cannot o'erwhelm,
Our passionate poets to silence command,
Or banish the harp from your strand.
𝄆 Chorus 𝄇
The Welsh version:
Mae hen wlad fy nhadau yn annwyl i mi,
Gwlad beirdd a chantorion, enwogion o fri;
Ei gwrol ryfelwyr, gwladgarwyr tra mad,
Dros ryddid gollasant eu gwaed.[b]
Cytgan:
Gwlad! Gwlad! Pleidiol wyf i'm gwlad.
Tra môr yn fur i'r bur hoff bau,
O bydded i'r hen iaith barhau.[c]
II
Hen Gymru fynyddig, paradwys y bardd,
Pob dyffryn, pob clogwyn, i'm golwg sydd hardd;
Trwy deimlad gwladgarol, mor swynol yw si
Ei nentydd, afonydd, i fi.[d]
Cytgan
III
Os treisiodd y gelyn fy ngwlad tan ei droed,[e]
Mae hen iaith y Cymry mor fyw ag erioed,
Ni luddiwyd yr awen gan erchyll law brad,
Na thelyn berseiniol fy ngwlad.
Awesome thank you
Bore da. Allwch chi ddim curo Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau fel anthem.
I'm as English as can be but i do like that Welsh dragon 🏴
As an Englishman I have to say that there are few sounds better than a Welsh rugby crowd singing their anthem.
Does anyone remember the John Redwood incident or am I too old?
John Redwood was an English Conservative politician who was appointed Secretary of State for Wales, a government appointment, in 1993 as his party, owing to unpopuarity there, had no elected politicians in Wales eligible for the post.
Not long into his tenure, he was guest of honour at an event in Wales which began with the singing of the Welsh anthem, customarily sung in Welsh.
Taken by surprise, instead of doing what most sensible people would do - stand motionless in a respectful and solemn pose and remain silent whilst the rest of those present sang the words and tune, he opted in his panic to join in, not knowing the Welsh language or any of the words of the anthem, attempting in vain to lip-read everyone else and to copy the sounds they were singing at a slight lag.
All through it, he was unable to hide his alarm and discomfort as his singing was unconvincing and his eyes were swivelling from side to side looking for inspiration and divine intervention in a very shifty fashion. The news media and his political opponents had a field day!
I wonder whether it's on TH-cam?
Mark, they’re singing in Welsh!
Wales is the land of song, gives me goosebumps every time I hear the Welsh national anthem. Have a look at the Welsh male voice choir, who tour USA regularly. Really enjoy your channel, take care 👍
Thank you
I have Welsh in my blood in that my mums maiden name was Davies. For some reason the Welsh national anthem means more to me though i am English.
hello from Cornwall/Kernow (UK). glad i stumbled on your video, Wales has a lovely anthem.
Thanks for watching
@@MarkfromtheStates no problem would, would you consider watching the unofficial Cornish national anthem "Trelawny" in Cornish language?
Thank you for this. To me it’s the most beautiful anthem in the world.
Here’s what they sang with translation
Mae hen wlad fy nhadau yn annwyl i mi,
Gwlad beirdd a chantorion, enwogion o fri;
Ei gwrol ryfelwyr, gwladgarwyr tra mâd,
Tros ryddid gollasant eu gwaed.
Gwlad, Gwlad, pleidiol wyf i'm gwlad,
Tra môr yn fur i'r bur hoff bau,
O bydded i'r heniaith barhau.
This land of my fathers is dear to me Land of poets and singers, and people of stature Her brave warriors, fine patriots Shed their blood for freedom
Chorus: Land! Land! I am true to my land! As long as the sea serves as a wall For this pure, dear land May the language endure for ever.
There are two more verses but they only sang the first one.
Very good
❤
You must react to the unofficial anthem of wales 🏴 it’s just as good.❤
Ok thanks Kim
Well don’t tease Mark by not telling him what it is! th-cam.com/video/emPhXdwhQoE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=J3DRjf8ponFHMR7w
@@arwelp I know.😫😆🤭
@@arwelp Well that was awesome
Mark have you been watching Welcome to Wrexham?
Yes... Enjoying the show
Don't worry Mark, three quarters of Britain can't understand what they are saying either !
Lol
I'm English, but the Welsh Rugby team in the 1970s were astounding. Then, the Welsh anthem foreshadowed the game.
My favourite anthem (by a country mile) was after the 2015 Paris terrorist attacks. The French team came to England to play football, and the English did their best to sing "La Marseillaise" with our French cousins. _Paris Attacks: French and British fans sing La Marseillaise together at Wembley Stadium_ th-cam.com/video/WXTPb5BBA0w/w-d-xo.html (54seconds) the singing isn't great, but trying mattered a lot.

Best Wishes. ☮
Thank you G appreciate it
The odd thing about rugby anthems is that only England and Wales actually have a national anthem to sing. Scotland doesn't so they choose the 1960's song by Roy Williamson of the Corrys folk group, "Flower of Scotland" which is very rousing. th-cam.com/video/PCaflEdNAfo/w-d-xo.html Northern Ireland has a football team but no rugby team. Irish rugby chose to keep the provincial competition system so NI players field for the province of Ulster in Home Nation games but when they play in the Six Nations it's for Ireland. In that scenario Amhrán na bhFiann (The Soldier’s Song) (th-cam.com/video/mBjWu3FsT7Q/w-d-xo.html) is played but is followed by "Ireland's Call" which was specially written to be sung at Irish rugby matches. This incredible clip features a young Irish child who's been on TV quite a bit with his rendition from The Aviva Stadium. th-cam.com/video/nXJIglpcVBc/w-d-xo.html
To get the blood up before a rugby game though the New Zealand All Blacks have it cracked with their fantastic native "Haka" th-cam.com/video/4N_t9_4hatc/w-d-xo.html but of all the versions I've seen I find this one the scariest - a mob of grammar school kids before an inter-school game. th-cam.com/video/A-L7LuDUZH0/w-d-xo.html
Right on Glyn thank you
Aw I love The Welsh National Anthem. I can’t speak Welsh though but I do understand some welsh words. We are a strange little country, in school they teach us French, German and Latin, you’d think we would learn some of the language of our closest neighbours lol. Yes Wales did indeed beat us SSSHHH LOL yes The Welsh are natural born singers. There’s lots of Welsh male voice choirs from the valleys, you should look one up mark, there’s some great videos of them with amazing performances.
Awesome
'A strange little Country' I'm going to take that as a compliment Doilch yn fawr iwan Saesneg😂😂
I know I'm in the minority but being a northerner I'm more rugby league. Hope you're well pal 👍🇬🇧🇺🇸
Yes I'm good
We have contributed some mighty fine players to your great sport over time, we always used to watch the Rugby League on TV as a kid, Challenge Cup and Floodlit Trophy, it's not been the same since Ray French has gone.
Best wishes from Wales.
I'd love to bring you over just to hear it for real. I'm 1st generation English, proud Pityakka, but my family are Welsh forever and a day. The 1st time I realised there was an England Rugby team, I looked at my dad all confused. He didn't even have to look at me and I knew to close the hole under me nose 😂
❤ from Northeast England ❤️
Welsh people are well known for their singing voices and it's hereditary. Tom Jones and Shirley Bassey to name a couple. Most coal mining villages had choirs.
With a Welsh father and an English mother I can never can support one side over the other. Love all the anthems and the passion of rugby.
Check out all 6 Nations anthems at home games in the tournament. Something else...
I’m glad you enjoyed that Mark. ❤
Booo😁
Personally I prefer the football version, where they just play the first few bars and then leave the crowd to get on with it! th-cam.com/video/ZwdZOHm8r-Y/w-d-xo.htmlsi=FAcvhw6OTv3vOORz
