      You probably have an original GBA AGS-101 screen and not an aftermarket then I assume, I remember having an original screen AGS-101 (brown tab), and it sure is slow. Compared to the new aftermarket ones from Aliexpress for example, the original AGS-101 is a heck lot slower, but has way better contrast and more saturated colors, (the later is not necessarily a plus to be honest). It's also got better sunlight visibility, but nowhere near the reflective screens or the transflective GBC mod screens we got now.

      The IPS screen mod on the SP also leaves room right below the screen to install a headphone jack. I personally like the dpad on an SP better so once modded with the IPS screen and headphone jack it'll be the ultimate GBA.

    Hey, excellent video. It's your videos that inspired me to start modding and repairing consoles. So thank you!
    The interference on the AGS-101 mod is because the voltage regulator is out of whack and needs to be adjusted. I believe it was actually one of your earlier videos that explained this, so I am a little surprised that you mention it as an issue. I tweaked my wife's AGS-101 modded screen voltage to perfection.
    Having said that, I still prefer the IPS mod that since replaced it.

    • @TheZeroSbr
      @TheZeroSbr 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @thecouchtripper It still is relevant, though. Not everyone wants to sacrifice 12 hours of battery life just to get a screen that has better viewing angles, which is irrelevant because you the player aren't going to be viewing the screen at an angle under 99.9% of circumstances. I've also got an AGB-101 and an AGS-101, and the screen quality is about as good as the IPS screen shown here. I think Colin just didn't get a voltage regulator put in his modded unit, because even at lowest brightness my systems' screens are comparable to that IPS display.

      Just curious, but what is the difference in battery life when it has the IPS screen vs the original screen?

    • @garciavma1
      @garciavma1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jacobmonks3722 well the original screen has no light, and this one has bright light so it consumes more bateries. The ones I bought are AA, 1300 mAh and the GBA with this new screen lasts around 6 hours playing. I have never played those all 6 hours long but that's the time I think my GBA gives to me. The package has 4 bateries so when the ones I am using are out of power I change them for the other ones that are full, so there are always bateries ready to use

    Sweet dude to see you upload a new video on GBA modding! Some of your earlier vids got me into modding my own GBA! I've had this IPS display for awhile but right now I'm not playing it much. But yes it's a beautiful screen.

    How convenient, I just ordered it couple of days ago and will hopefully be here for the weekend =) I'm excited as I've always disliked the ghosting on the 101.

    I didn't understand why people hates the reflective one.
    GBA was intended for outside gaming, when I was in the school I always played it in direct sunlight.
    When the first PSP was released I missed a lot the reflective screen from my GBA.

    Tremendous video...I can personally appreciate this new route since somehow the AGS-101 screen was about 2mm too thick.

    Wow they did actually solve the diagonal tearing from V1. I think I’ll upgrade this from the AGS101. And maybe a custom painted shell this time...

    And no one will ever notice, because everyone has a beautiful screen in their pocket already. It won't stand out these days.
    Doesn't take away that this is a really beautiful screen for such an old device.

      This is for those that like the gameboy advance... for a lot of us, we like the original GBA but hate it's screen.
      This is a screen upgrade that can be bought cheaply AND technically doesn't require any soldering if you don't want the ability to change brightness levels.
      It's night and day different from the original. The fact that the OLED screen on the original PSP is better or the display in your phone is better means nothing.

    • @thany3
      @thany3 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@brandonkick Sure, I agree. I was just saying that in this day and age, the screen is nothing special. It's just very special to have it on a GBA in particular.
      However, most people will not notice it, because of how used to good looking screens everyone is.

    Here are a few things I think are worth mentioning from someone who has been enjoying this screen:
    1). HHL is bumping up there price a bit here. However, they do provide a foam insert and cabling. If you can source your own cable you can buy them from the manufacturer for cheaper here: funnyplaying.com/collections/product/products/gba
    They provide there own spacer as well.
    2). The battery life of the Gameboy is reduced by this screen mod. However, I would still recommend it. It's a beautiful screen.
    3). If you are nervous about the gasket you can only stick it into the shell. The foam padding and the spacer should hold it. I bought mine directly from funnyplaying and no foam was provided. This method still worked for me.
    Overall though, the Funnyplaying IPS mod is simply beautiful. I originally bought it because I wanted to do an AGS-101 mod but the screens were around $80 at the time of my purchase. So when I purchased my screen for $45 it was a steal. It really brought me back into my Gameboy hobby. The original screen is very hard to see and I honestly don't know how I managed when I was little.
    Great video. This is just my input on the panel.

    That looks very good! I never bothered doing the IPS kit mod for the GBA (I did it with my GBC, though), and seeing exactly how much sharper it looks compared to the AGS-101 mod makes me want to try this kit out someday. Plus it'd give me a good excuse to try these new clear shell and button membrane combos.

    Got a knockoff one on ebay for 40$, and surprisingly enough, it looked just as good as the funnyplaying one I have! Might be worth a video

    • @killiter1997

      As far as I can tell, the knockoff consolidates a few of the chips on the funnyplaying mod into one. I'm not a cs major or EE, so I can't exactly phrase what I mean.

    I just want to point out that there IS a tiny bit of added input lag with this mod. It's very slight and 90% of people probably won't notice or be bothered by it, but I'm really sensitive to latency and when I bought a GBA with this mod, I noticed it the second I started playing. I tested it against a stock GBA with 240p Test Suite mini, A/B'd about 10 times, and sure enough there's about ~2 frames added lag. Again, probably won't be an issue for most people and doesn't ruin it, but just worth noting that it absolutely is there.

    Great kit! I was gonna install it as well, but I decided to go with the ags 101 screen mod for the only reason that I wanted to use a limited edition pokemon shell with the right pokemon center screen lens. I plan to do this mod later on a different one and keep them both.
