When it also where transreflective then it would be perfect. But as it is it lost his best feature with that mod.. playing outside in sunlight..

That screen when I first saw it made my jaw literally drop, if they made a Gameboy classic this would be epic.
I’m disappointed in Handheld Legend for not addressing the palette issue with this mod, and I find it curious how it wasn’t mentioned in this video. I bought this from HHL on day one, only to find out on TH-cam that every unit of this has the light gray and dark gray palettes swapped. So while the ips screen looks great, every game looks wrong. The user must cut traces and solder tiny wires if they want their games to look correct. Handheld Legend has one sentence that reads “fixing the color palette issues with the dmg ips kit (rips)” between the features and contents of this kit, but it doesn’t link to anything, or explain the problem. Two weeks after HHL released this kit, Retro Modding released it and were very up front with the problems, and also offer a version that is fixed by them and has speaker pre-installed. I like HHL, but I think they pretended there weren’t any problems so they could sell more kits. I don’t know if the palette issues have been fixed in the example in this video, but all potential buyers should be aware of this kit. Neither HHL or this video bring up this issue.
There was one for the Gameboy Color just like this that had the same issue and they said it was only going to be the first run of mod kits and they were fixing the issue, maybe this will be the same?

what is the replacement kit to the pallette issue, and video discussing the issue?
A few important notes and frequently asked questions:
--The initial batch of these IPS screen kits cause the two greyscale levels to be flipped on the new screen (medium grey becomes dark grey, and vice versa). This can be fixed by swapping two of the pins on the wide ribbon connector that goes to the front PCB. However, I've received word that the manufacturer is aware of the issue and future kits shouldn't exhibit this behavior.
--The replacement shell I used here is also from Hand-Held Legend, but since minimal modding is necessary you could, of course, reuse your original shell if you wanted. This mod is also compatible with replacement glass screen covers.
--There seems to be confusion regarding the replacement front PCB. On the Game Boy, all of the logic happens on the back PCB. The front board only handles the connection to the display, the contrast wheel, the button contacts and the speaker connection. Since the original rear PCB is still used, the Game Boy functions and plays games just like it always did. This kit does not turn your Game Boy into a "clone" console by any means.

I've read that the buttons work bad on this PCB, even with the 2nd revision of this set. Can you confirm that? I mean, having a nice screen is great, but if the buttons just doesn't work perfectly, it's useless. They even admit that there are problems and a revision V3 is coming. So I think I would wait for the 3rd revision before buying that.

I just installed the V3 model of this screen and WOW! What a difference! Completely crisp, REALLY bright and almost no motion blur. Scrolling games are finally playable! One of the best retro mods I have ever installed. I am particularly enjoying the green colour setting on the screen, it still feels like a Gameboy with an original screen the way you imagined it before you saw the blurry mess the actual screen was.

Do you realize that the grey shades are backwards?
Yeah, it's a known issue with the first batch; there's a guide on how to fix it, and they also fixed it on the next batch of PCBs

Colin, you should add an update to this that the current version of this IPS has an issue with the color palette. Two of the traces need cut and swapped for it to display correctly.
This is awesome. I'll for sure try to do this. I'm also planning on getting a gameboy pocket in the future, and I'll probably try to do the same thing with it. It's nice to have something like this with you. We do have smartphones that can play all the roms possible, but it's just not the same. I found that if I have it with me, I tend to use my smartphone less. It's pretty cumbersome to carry the huge gameboy dmg with me, so the pocket would be awesome. I do have the Super Mario Bros Game & Watch, but I want my tetris. Great video. I'll probably use it as reference when I'm gonna do this to mine.

UPDATE: That was probably a dumb question for anyone that actually knows what the bivert chip does. I didn't understand that the chip kind of inverts the "colors," so yes, you will need to remove it for this mod.
I have been trying to order this from these guys but they keep cancelling it saying it's fraudulant purchase. I give up, Hand Held Legend can stuff it, I'm beginning to think they don't want business. I'm not even using a VPN.

What’s the impact on battery life using this screen?
I love how far these mods have came in the last few years, I remember watching your video when it released of the AGS-101 mod for gameboy advance, trying it myself and loving how well it came out, now we're adding IPS panels, fitting DS's inside color shells, who knows what else we'll be seeing in the next few years. If you have a V1 of the backlight kit you need to check out Makho's fix to the color spacing. In the process they have reversed the second and third color bank so that's why your Super Mario land doesn't look right.
Too expensive. 30 dollar screen on Aliexpress for the same result.
It does kind of change the experience / kill off some of the charm when graphics that were made with LCD-lag & inherent pixel ghosting in mind, instead come off as flickering and harsh on a modern (
I installed the ips v2 for the GBA and i refurbished my wife's old gba from college. I gave it to her for valentines day it was such a hit. XD she's been on it since friday playing her old pokemon carts. :)

The pocket doesn't have the best battery voltage supply, so if a new IPS screen is made for that, it would probably take another voltage converter to make it stable.
holy shit.....ok so , i dont know if ive just had what ive heard referred to as "a senior moment" but... i dont remember ever noticing how off center "dot matrix with stereo sound" is from the screen. been playing gameboy since they came out and idont remember ever noticing it. looked at mine to confirm and, yep. not even close to center....weird.

Be glad your display had "only" vertical dead lines. If you had horizontal dead lines... there would be no hope. Awesome new Display mod. I do have a spare original DMG model just waiting to be carefully modded like that. I've been waiting for such a display modification. It looks AWESOME. That kit is freaking impressive!!
There's going to be a similar DMG mod coming soon that lets you program and save custom color pallets, it has a graphic filter setting so you can turn on smoothing if you want, and it can show the battery status of your Gameboy. There's a review of a prototype on The Chinese Guys channel

Ok, I'm in. My screen now has horizontal lines and this is just what I've been hoping for.
Horizontal? Jeez, I didn't know that was a thing. I thought only vertical blank lines could appear on a DMG screen.
You can buy a Nintendo GBA SP AGS-101 (with a genuine backlit display) for the price of that mod, and play all three generations of Game Boy games, from all three regions. They have (easily replaceable) lithium-ion batteries as standard, and you can buy a cart for twenty quid that loads ROMs from an SD Card, with baked-in emulation that allows you to "convert" NES and Master System games into GBA ROMs.
How's the battery life? Love the 20h+ battery life with a bivert DMG on 4xAA
Asking the REAL questions here. I suppose the battery lifetime will still be considerably high and much higher than the battery life of a smartphone if you run a GameBoy emulator on it.
I'm planning on fixing up 4 of them with these IPS displays when I get my tax money and upgrade the screen in my PLAY IT LOUD! system.

These are two different options for a DMG. It would be reasonable to assume they're playing Gameboy games on a DMG, not a smartphone with an emulator.
I can't see it being that different, biggest powerdraw in either modified DMG is going to be the backlight. If these are comparably bright, it's probably about the same.
First thing I thought of was battery life or a rechargeable Li-ion kit if there is one
@@chrisgiles6906 and add a battery meter to see how much life is left on the battery in both hours and percentage. I could see that in the future.
You wouldn't thinkai video made this year is already outdated but it is, you only need to remove the top 4 posts on the shell and not all four, removing the bottom two actually makes the install harder keeping you from using the 3d printed bracket to hold the screen in place...
I went the whole hog, and did the battery mod as well. This puts a CleanJuice XL USB C Battery Pack in place of the original battery area, and it uses USB C to charge it - no more AA batteries, and the Li-Ion battery can last for upto 30 hours. The whole mods, screen, battery, shell, audio amp, new screen protector, breathes new life into the DMG Gameboy, and brings it into the 21st century. I am loving the GB more than when I got mine back in 1990, and now play it more than ever.
I urge any Gameboy lovers out there to do these mods, they are fantastic. You just can't beat original hardware. Forget emulation, or those cheap Chinese handhelds running some Android, and old emulators. The original GB is still the best.
For the holy Christ, that display looks crisp as hell. The 75 Bucks are money well spent I would say.
I don't have a Gameboy, but I think I'll start using more IPS Displays in some applications. ^^
And that's another sign how damn much we improved in display technology, from that old slow translucent LCD's to the modern IPS and OLED screens. ^^

I see you're using recharchables for the DMG - mine does not work with them (Ansmann 1.2) and I have to use standard 1.5 batteries. Are the Eneloops different?
But, with an IPS screen, you're not really playing on a game boy anymore. I can play DMG games on 1000 different Chinese consoles with an IPS display. The heart of the DMG is the display

I have a parts machine that I bought from one of the members of Infinity Shred for dirt cheap. It's completely missing the front PCB(knew this when I was buying, just wanted a parts machine) This'd be perfect for upgrading it from a spare parts machine to a new machine in general.

my bivert dmg that i got off ebay months ago just started showing vertical lines, it was working flawlessly after i just received it. i guess something is dying in it, i guess that DMG IPS mod can work to fix it but i don't have the money to do it right now, i just switched to my super gameboy on my SNES till i can afford to fix my dmg.
Well I’ve ordered one and a half broken Gameboy so now I’m ready to bring life back to a classic console. Thanks for the install video, I’ve always kind of been on the fence when it came to these type of consoles modifications but with the way that this mod work it doesn’t really damage any existing hardware so it’s perfect for a game preservationists like me. Is it also Transreflective? That i can play with it also in direkt sunlight? Otherwise all these Backlight Screenmods are absolutely garbage as good as they look inside or in the dark with most of them the Gameboy lost its absolutely unique feature.."Playing Outside wherever you whant" and also in direct sunlight. And most of the IPS Displays dosent suport it also as all of our Smartphones and Tablets they are only superbright and so they need alot of Energy in sunlight what is a totaly misstake in my eyes.. Thats the most important thing for me why i use my old Gameby and Gameboy Color also as the Gameboy Advance, they can be used outside with i brilliant picture also if the sun shines as much as it can :D then its only me that will be burned from it when i forgot me while playing xD.
I know only two Transreflective Backlight Screens that have a verry good picture quality, are verry bright if you need and also you can turn of the backlight and because its also transreflective you can play outside in sunlight as perfekt as with an original non light screen. Only misstake is that the screensize is a little smalet like the bennvenn gbc mod and all the others.. but because its transreflective its for me the best screen. The holy grale in my eyes is a screen with that features in the original size.
Also i could miss a little picture quality on my smartphone and tablet when they would be also transreflective and backlighted.. that would so great, safe alot of battery/energy and you can read text and look pictures/movies or sufring on the internet without anny issues while your putside and the sun shines bright directly on your device. It makes no sence for me why the produce other screens like now that they cant do it.. also the switch lite needs a transreflective backlight display! ;)

I love the editing and script. Love the part where you change focus from the nipping tool to the sharpie. That said, I miss the vintage gameboy screen look and would have appreciated more footage of the DMG color palette option.

Looks incredible, although even with your assurances having the screen taped in there seems dodgy... Also I can understand that having a perfectly sized screen is extremely unlikely to happen, having a screen that scans from the wrong direction doesn't seem like it's gonna be great.

This might sound strange, but I'd love an IPS screen mod for the Nintendo 3DS.
I love the 3DS, games are plenty, fun and of high quality, however the screens are simply bad.
Colors are washed out, back-light is dim, and some ghosting can be observed.
I don't mind eliminating 3D effect if it means a better display, its just, for me, the poor display hugely affects the experience.
I really dig the crispness of these displays. Unfortunately, in all of the videos I have watched so far, the various color modes don't look great. Maybe it is better in person...

I like these kinds of mods, dont get me wrong. But, i just dont understand the point. There are many more modern ways to play gameboy games. I love nintendo hardware and keep a complete collection of handhelds specifically to play the games as i remember them. I feel like the screen tech is a big part of that, especially for the dmg. Dot matrix display is literally what makes it so special. Its the defining characteristic of the model, thats why its called the dmg! the only model gameboy i can see this making sense for is the original gba, as that screen is essentially unusable but the form factor is so appealing. Same goes for game gear to an extent. But to rip out the absolutely beautiful reflective display in a neo geo pocket color and put in some generic screen just seems wrong to me. That being said, people can certainly do whatever they want with their consoles, and if they have fun then power to them. Its those sellers on ebay that hack up thousands of classic handhelds ... just rubs me the wrong way.
Just pulled the trigger on this kit and a new shell, and bought a used DMG unit from feebay. Don’t tell me wife or she’ll sell my scrotum skin to cosmetic companies.
Really happy they have done this, I am one of the unfortunate ones with a dead screen DMG, I did ask them if they could source a replacement screen a couple of years ago... time to go shopping
This is great and all, but I think that the non-backlit green display adds a lot the charm of the original gameboy.
Charm that is, of course, gone when modded.

2:44 I would actually advise against using pressure to hold it in place because it can end up causing TOO MUCH pressure which leads to visual tearing or too little and it comes loose
Wow ,back in 1989 we could,ve only dream about such sharp screens as advertizers in magazines wanted you to believe, this is what the original gameboy should,ve been in the first place.

The pcb d-pad buttons don't look good... Compare it to the original. Diagonal inputs almost guaranteed!
Once they make this for the Gameboy pocket, and same screen size as the pocket's, they can take my money. This is nice for the DMG but I like the smaller console size of the pocket better.
For me this mod would be much better if someone had created a screen that is not larger than the viewport and would not involve cutting any interior plastic.
But, can't really deny that there's a massive improvement on the screen. I continue to use the original screen on my Game Boy
Hi. I tried this mod recently and I have encountered a problem. There are instances that the screen fades to black and the Gameboy seems to power off on its own before a game could load. This happens right after the Nintendo startup screen. Have you ever encountered that before? If you have, how did you fix it?
I have 2 of these old gameboys that still work and a dozen games, I think I might mod one of them like this

I would not replace the slightly yellowed dmg shell. These new cases are so fragile and break very easy. Very Nice video tho.
Since I got backlight panel and bivert module few days ago I basically now have to try to install it, damage my screen and then order this. Cool. :D Haha
This is the best screen mod, it updates it. You can play it in it's original colors and the game boy pocket colors which appear to be the default.
Im wondering can you actually mod a gameboy color screen with led backlight on the original gameboy or do they make any color screens for original gameboy?

Hi, I got one of these but my screen is all messed up. It fades and the screen is not stable to the point that you cannot see the sprites. It looks like when an old CRT wasn't tuned to a channel properly. Is there a fix to this?
The idea of saving them from the trash is enough for me. With constant modding on systems and handheld consoles. Less systems will be available in the future for people who are enthusiasts. This is a great win-win video. Thank you for sharing this.
Hello, that vertical line is due to a capacitor problem, i had the same problem, only one capacitor was causing the vertical dynamic lines i replaced it and it worked
