Honda Monkey DNM Rear Shocks Overview, Comparison, and Installation

  • I'm ashamed that this took so long for me to edit and produce, but soooo many other projects jumped their way in front of this one. I wanted to try some different rear shocks for the Honda Monkey as I found the MNNTHBX Rear Shocks I had on the bike first were a bit stiff for my off-road riding, rightfully so as they're designed for the road. I didn't think I'd be doing as much off-roading with this bike as I've done since getting the first round of mods, so now I'm forced to rethink some of the choices now knowing how I mostly use the bike.
These DNM Shocks are from TB Parts and are branded "DNM", but I first knew them as "TB Parts Shocks", as they were the first to offer them, and I assumed they import them exclusively. I have a DNM shock on my CRF110 from TB Parts that I absolutely love, so I wanted to give these a try to see if they handled the off-road bumps with a little softness than the MNNTHBX shocks, but first, we take a deep look into them and what they're offering and how they install.
Some things to note which I cover in the video, most importantly is that the "misalignment" between top and bottom I'm talking about is that without spacing, the shocks will install with an angle to them as viewed from the back. This might be that the Monkey shock mounts are not exactly lined up, or that the shocks have different thickness top and bottom mounts. Either way, the DNM shocks do not come with Honda Monkey specific spacers to correct this like the MNNTHBX shocks, so you have to be a little creative with washers. No big deal, but it'd be nice to have a spacer kit available along with these shocks to make them 100% plug n' play with the Monkey.
If you want to try the DNM Shocks on your Monkey, here's where I got them and recommend you do too: www.tbparts.co...

Those DNM shocks look pretty awesome, and not too bad a price compared to some of the other options.

They’re a pretty nice quality shock, hitting on the lower-to-mid-ground of offerings. I’ll have the ride/review video coming up next to let you know how they performed.

First thing I did was get rid of the crap shocks Honda put on the bike. It's the one area of the bike that let's it down. I'm glad there's more options

At the moment, there's quite a few options! I've found the super-stiff options first however, and am trying to find the middle-ground between the stock and super-stiff

@@John5XR adjustable would be the ticket then.

What suspension did you go with? I’m still trying to figure that out. Pricing can go from something decent to expensive as hell real quick.

@E Rosas currently I have the “mystery shocks” on the bike and they’re actually really good! These can be found from around $80 at T Bolt or a bit more from MNNTHBX. TB Parts should have them too. If shopping TB Parts, let them know you saw the Mystery Shocks video as I don’t think they have them listed on their site. The part numbers for them are listed on the Myster Shocks video description

@@MrHennessE I bought a set of YSS shocks off of ebay and have over 900mi on them, no issues.

Very nice looking shocks! I cant wait to hear what you think about how they handle.
I'll be particularly interested in their offroad capabilities. I'll need shocks that can handle some pretty gnarly trails.

I have the ride review follow up video next in line, but don’t purchase anything yet 😉

I’m envious of this topic because I don’t even own a freaking monkey, not yet at least.

You might want to ride someone's monkey first... Just bought 2021 non abs and it's odd. I may be spoiled from my childhood since I grew up on a Honda ct70. During life I owned H1 Kawasaki 500 triple 2 stroke and Yamaha Fj1200. Not sure why this isn't closer ride to the 70? Too much needs to be swapped out. Swing arm with 4" extension, tires (factory not to good), mirror extension, shocks front and rear, add skid plate or else destroy motor and exhaust, etc, etc... Real money for something lacking a high level of thought and finish. If this was a person's first motorcycle it may seem OK but I know that it is lacking. At 40 on a downhill gentle curve you can get a little twisting from barely touching the brake (tires?, distance of wheel separation? Front fork angle?, brake clinch?) Alot of money and experimenting to even get close to ct70 ride for sure... Be careful

The bike is actually really good on its own, I just like customizing and tinkering. For a first bike, it would be great except for any bit of highway use, where I feel it wouldn’t be fast enough. I also take this bike through some extreme conditions and terrain it’s not meant for. Based on that, it does ok!

Hey my friend, could you share the information on the tires your using, like the brand name, size and where to buy ? ? ? Thanks.

Shinko Mobbers from MNNTHBX.com. They only come in one size combo and are made for the 12" wheels of the small bikes. Can't go wrong!

I have a Monkey coming. I have not even tried it to see how the shocks feel. It felt fine to me on my test ride in the city. I am 110 pounds. After watching your videos and others, it makes me think I will be fine, on or off-road. Would you agree? I am not planning on doing jumps, etc, just the occasional dirt road.

    • @John5XR
      @John5XR  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

At 110lbs you’ll barely be working the stock shocks! The stock shocks have 75in/lb spring rates each, which is 150 together, which then means it would take 150lbs to make those springs compress one inch. Science aside, I think you’ll fine the stock shocks perfect 👌

    • @MrHennessE

At 110lbs. you are good to go. I wish I had that problem. I’m 200lbs. and experience bottoming out a little too much for my liking. Haven’t upgraded the suspension yet but it will definitely be the first thing I do which sucks since I really wanted to update the exhaust first.

Just bought these shocks and mine seem to be upside down . In order for the wording to be correct I had to put the red wheel side on the swing arm. Does that seem right? Same part number as the ones on yours.

I'm not buying a piggy back. I think they look dum. I want red shocks or white.
