I like your technique. You are definitely a professional. You talk slowly and unhurriedly in your presentation. Those wishing to make video tutorials could learn a lot from you!
andy sheader...Balancing the right amount of speed & information for every level of viewer can be challenging, however, most find the speed to be just right. The Pause & Reiwnd buttons are there to review sections.
Trevor Hughes...Displacement maps work best when there's a lot of highlight and shadows. The roundness of the surface doesn't matter. I'd done a few other tutorials regarding displacement maps. I do my videos using Techsmith Camtasia Studio.
layman lay...Those numbers and letter in that specific order result in the specific color I'm using for the face. If you click down on any area within the large, color picker box, you'll notice that the digits in the bottom field changes.
Dude.. It's the second time I'm learning to do some stupid sh*t in Photoshop, and it's the second time I'm doing it with your tutorial! You're an amazing teacher, thank you a lot!
As a Belgian, working with a dutch Photoshop version it is not Always easy to follow the instructions. However as a beginner I succeeded to make this tree with a foto and I am quit satisfied with the outcome. I learn a lot from your youtube films !! I am not going to mention the amount of rewinds I have to do ;-) Thank you so much for sharing the information ! X
Fr3akopath...Double-click on the quickmask icon below the foreground and background colors. Increase the quickmask's opacity to 100%. In the Color Overlay layer style, there is always a color box to click on.
Isn't that a well explained and clean out educational tutorial? I was just watching and not practically following but very educational indeed. Good job kind sir.
Worked brilliantly for me, a novice. Thanks a lot for the lucid information. It appears that we need to tinker around a bit for the right effect with each picture. Again, thanks.
TheOthoudt...Double-click on the Quickmask icon below the foreground & background color boxes. The quickmask options window will open. Set the Opacity to 100%.
Tee Hill...Tee Hill...Sorry, I don't know Elements. I receive many requests every week from subscribers asking me to help them on projects, but I barely have enough time just to answer the emails receive. In the meantime, I'm glad my tuts are helping you and thanks for subscribing!
muhammed shorif,,,Yes, more than likely, you would use a different color. The color I used is based on what I felt looked good ultimately on this particular bark.
robin55games...For this example, it's not necessary because the face was desaturated already. Also, the texture of the tree was used to displace the face. In the stone statue tut, the body builder was used to displace the stone texture.
Really enjoy your tutorials... I am searching for a good caricature tutorial... Could you please create one or suggest one similar to your tutorial style.
Mary you are one of the best teacher on photoshop.. great video instructional, i would like to ask what software did you use on your video tutorial? thanks a lot for your videos
I'm on trying this one now with a picture of my Dad - i'll let you know how it turns out. Keep the videos coming though, i've only just started using Photoshop last week and they're helping me a great deal :)
Hi...Moddy, I have seen tow or three tutorials posted by you. I like the the details you give in tutorials and your "Sharp" voice. Really alwais neat n clean... any way thaks.
as always, great job Marty...I always seem to learn something with your tutorials as it seems you continually show different aspects of Photoshop's capabilities making the whole Photoshop experience much more enjoyable...just 2 quick suggestions..1- most of us will not be able to purchase cs6 so I hope all your new tuts are not beyond cs5's capabilities and 2- if you have time or interest, to please do a tutorial on putting a face (of choice) on an Easter Island figure...Thanks
Really good a clear. This was on a fairly flat part of a tree say if the tree was more round. why I ask I have a white kettle and like to put the face of the person in it like the tree but it a lot thiner. and to the next and exciting question how dose one do this in Video?
When it comes to ps tuts, I thrive off of yours and Andrei's tuts! I love this! I'm just starting to work with displacements so this is perfect! Thank you!
Good job. I assume the colour code you entered was specific to the tone of the tree. What do I do if I am using my own tree trunk photo? Can I use the eye dropper? Thanks.
Hi; excellent work! ...... I'm having a bit of problem with blending part, when i double click on the top layer and choose color overlay there is no color box for me to click and enter thee color code, i'm using cs6 ,also when i'm using brush to select the face part the mask is transparent reddish and doesn't mask the whole face with red but a light red where the original face s still visible,I'm trying to use your method on a red rose instead of the tree, thx
Thanks a lot for the tutorial, is there a way to do this method in other programs besides photoshop like Krita or Gimp seeing as not everyone can afford photoshop
If we were to use it on a different textured background wouldn't we use different overlay color, using a color picker may be? The question is, How did you determine the color 736d69 on the color box? ..By the way great tutorial easy to use and well highlighted shortcuts were very useful..
I usually do not like video tutorials with spoken explanations. But if the explanatory video were all such as the yours, it would be different. > I am amazed at the clarity of speech, and the sound quality. > It is crystal clear as they say. And I really like. …………………… I am a francophone, but I understand very well what is said in the presentation. Thank you very much for all your videos.
Brilliant as usual I'm only using cs3 the only problem I have is right at the end when I open curves I can't see what to click to attach it 4.10 click to clip to 1 layer beneath it. I'm only a Novice so I know it will be something simple staring me in the face lol Any help is appreciated Thanks again.
Marty does have a very pleasant, professional, and engaging voice (with an undertone of utter enthusiasm), which makes the clear content and instruction easy to understand.
+Blue Lightning TV I'm so glad My Space asked that question & you answered it. I was having difficulty wrapping my brain around that concept too until I read your answer & realized that, if a displacement map were made of the face instead, you'd likely have a tree with a bulging bark face on it rather than a face that's part of the tree. Thanks for helping me displace my brain with that concept. :)
Lo que pasa es que cuando estas en la opcion de duplicar capa y renombrarla, debajo le tienes que poner documento nuevo, asi te lo abre en otra ventana, bueno al menos creo ese era tu problema ^^!

Minnie Kerrison...You can also open Color Overlay or any other layer style, by clicking on the "fx" icon at the bottom of the layers panel.

Thank you for your wonderful tutorials. You explain your steps very clearly especially for beginners. Awesome job.
Great tutorials! Do you think a head shot on green screen in video will provide the same results?
+BigBlockVideo No. The head on the green screen won't have the bark texture.
+Blue Lightning TV Thanks Marty!

thanks marty.... helps me again.... youre my encyclopeadia !! ha aha ha
Marty, Why did you make a displacement map of the tree trunk.
+My Space In order for the face to conform to the contours of the tree bark, the tree must be made into a displacement map.
Blue Lightning TV My apologies Marty, I thought that you had made a displacement map of the face also.
BLTV
