I am a 60yo male basketball coach in the USA, but know that sports can do so much. Probably none of these girls will make it to the elite levels, but it doesn't really matter. They are learning to learn, they are learning to believe in themselves, they are learning to be good teammates. This can be carried over to any endeavor. God bless them.

correction. William Hale made us aware: "at 10:12, Cricket is NOT India's National Sport, it is the most popular sport, but not the National Sport. Actually, India does NOT have any official National Sport." Thanks!

India does have a national sport and that's hockey.

No, its a misconception. Someone put an RTI and the relevant ministry replied India does not have a National Sport

Babu Ravi/Abhinav Parivesh, India does NOT have any official national sport. If you are that confident about hockey, then please share a link of any Indian government website/document which indicates that.

Cricket is, for all practical purposes, India's national sport. Hockey is now restricted to pockets these days--few schools even bother to have hockey in their sports periods.

Wonderful documentary. Together with other documentaries like Al Jazeera's 'India's Wushu Warrior Girl' they are showing us how Indian women in general, and those from India's minorities like Muslims and Christians are negotiating modernity and a restrictive culture. Was also great to hear from the lady coach from Cameroon.

DW, you need to correct this at 10:12, Cricket is NOT India's National Sport, it is the most popular sport, but not the National Sport. Actually, India does NOT have any official National Sport. So this is a factual error, please correct it.

I hated the fact how a religion was preventing that girl to have fun with others. I mean what teenage girl wouldn't want to dance or have the "choice" to take off a piece of cloth but I guess god doesn't allow that! What kind of religion does that to a child? sigh! I think buddhism is only almost perfect religion we have.

As a Indian I was surprised at the low trash decibel level. I am used to constantly being told indians especially the majority are communal pigs especially with modi ruling etc etc.... I am pleasantly surprised that the noise is so low and good to know that we are not really persecuting minorities even though I wish life for women was not so tough in my country but we are not so bad are we ?

Well lots of struggle, we do not have infrastructure and social problems do exist , but what I feel is the biggest hurdle is Indian mentality which gives so much importance to studies and force people into job which they are not good at, these girls or anyone who is doing things differently will shape future for this country.

This was all about the feel good factor. I don't think this had anything to do with football or women's empowerment. They might have as well taken the girls to a nice picnic. Why bother with the football. Most girls couldn't even control the ball properly.
Don't get me wrong, I ain't a women basher or a chauvinist you might think I am, In fact, I am a big fan of the Indian national women's football team. I think they are far better than our men's football team.
I just don't get the reason and the motive of this undertaking "Discover football", why bother to bring together girls from across the country who can barely play football. Why not let them practice in their own states and towns and develop as players. To learn any skill whether football or anything else takes time and practice, it is not exactly a picnic. That lesson is completely missed here. And it applies to girls as well as boys. This has nothing to do with the gender.
