    I think the ''All the people I've murdered'' line is Bruce just being honest about his no kill rules consequences before he either murders Joker or almost kills him

    • @niallheffernan1086
      @niallheffernan1086 2 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Yeah I thought similar since I didn't understand how this line is connected to batman believing he's the cause of his villains. It's in character that batman is aware of how many he could save if he just killed joker but can't bring himself to do it knowing he wouldn't stop at joker.
      While the theory that he's the cause is wrong because looking at his rogues gallery would show a lot of them would be the same if batman wasn't around. Not necessarily in Gotham for some but still existing. Bane, Penguin, Deathstroke, you can make the arguement Harvey would have become a version of Twoface without Batman's presence because of his multiple personality disorder. So I don't think batman subscribes to that theory.

    “All the people I’ve murdered by letting you live” is one of my favorite lines because simply Batman’s just old and tired of this shit and with this and everything else going it’s starting to call his morality into question. (If we’re keeping ASBAR as canon, then Frank Miller’s Batman has had “questionable” morals for YEARS!) In many ways he DID think in absolutes and those absolutes are beginning to slip. Yes, Joker and many of the villains are responsible for their own actions but Batman feels responsible for Gotham. Hence why he kept count of the death toll. It ate at him for so long yet he still dedicated himself to his code. I get chills when I hear him yell “No More!”
    The whole story is focused on Batman’s Influence on the city and just how BIG his presence is, I also saw it as a deconstruction of what the classic Batman of old would have to do in a more modern neo 80s world.
    It may not be that he subscribes entirely to the same thoughts of the talking Heads on TV but that it had gotten him to think about it.

    Lastly, Vee, I think you may be misreading the point of the exchange between Batman and Joker starting with, "All the people I've murdered, by letting you live!". I don't think the idea is that Batman is resolving there to kill the Joker. To the contrary, I feel this exchange shows Batman's value of human life and, thereby, outrage over the massacre he just witnessed. True, he contemplates if it'd be better if he'd have killed him years ago, but he never goes through with it as Joker breaks his own neck to frame Batman. Personally, I take it as something said more out of guilt over all the deaths, hence the "I did." after the Joker says, "I never kept count." (Again highlighting this Batman's value of life lost.) I also think this exchange demonstrates a really good understanding of the Joker in that he then replies, "I know you did. And I love you for it!," meaning that Joker understands what's precious to Batman and kills just to irk him, knowing that he will implicitly experience guilt over however many he couldn't save. This is probably some of my personal favorite Miller Batman writing, as, in my opinion, it really nails the yin-yang-ness of it all and the moral quandary to their relationship. Sure it's been thoroughly re-explored, now, but this was definitely influential at the time!

    • @Matt_Bright_1983
      @Matt_Bright_1983 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Except that the movie leaves out the most interesting part. In the comic, Batman does kill the Joker and then he's in denial about it so much that he hallucinates a conversation with Joker's dead body where Joker kills himself to frame Batman for the murder.

    I think you completely misunderstood the political takes here. The comics were written at a very different time. Hell were still benefiting the terrible job Regan did, all these later. i will say that the fight in this movie feels more like a proper batman/superman fight: the relationship between them, their different beliefs on justice, the set up, the evitable throw down, neither man being at 100%, superman trying to talk batman down while batman uses every tactic and trick in the book to keep clark off balance for ollie to come in with the last shot. for me, this was the perfect fight for these guys. snyder's version was just so...........bland and uninteresting. he takes the visuals of this fight without the real meat of what makes it great.
    i agree that this movie isn't perfect but that fight scene saved it for me.

  • @michaelpeacock4228

    My issue with the set of movies is that it just feels like they were trying too hard to make it straight-ahead, but the Frank Miller story has more interesting inner dialogue with characters, and adds little asides from the main story that make the world feel more "alive".

    Honestly for the most part I can't agree with you. I don't think it was perfect but I think in general these are damn good Batman movies. But the one thing I liked that you bring to light is when I see a lot of people talk about the movies they always mention something like "Frank Millers hatred toward the left" but then they ignore all the criticisms they also made about the right. A lot of people try to make it seem one sided when it really isn't, he's trying to commentate on political extremists in general.

    • @eneyavorodecky

      Because Miller argues through his work that the right is correct and that the left are wrong, by intentionally misrepresenting things, opinions and positions. And before I get marked as a Miller-fanboy, I’m not. I haven’t read any of his other works and haven’t read much about him. I’m just looking at it from the layman Batman fan.
    This saga really showed a realistic portrayal of what would happen to superhero’s in the real world. They would be debated and politicized to all hell, and those that stick to their guts are the ones that are true heroes. It portrays a very modern take on mob-mentality and how Facebook and Twitter warriors would criticize people just trying to do the right thing.

      His Daredevil stuff is much better than his Batman comics to me. Before he decided to write about the idea of superheroes instead of just writing superheroes. But he was growing as an artist and did great things outside of superheroes like Hardboiled and Sin City. And honestly everything he and Alan Moore did to comics both would regret it in the aftermath with all their imitators which is what Dark Knight Strikes Again and All Star is poking fun at.

    First, great, insightful review. I read the book back in the late 80’s, not long after it was published. You hit on many of the conflicts that make the story so thought provoking. Do Batman’s actions partially contribute to some criminals’ actions? Probably. Are they still responsible for their actions? Certainly. Frank Miller clearly criticized both the extreme right and the extreme left. I like that he didn’t offer clear answers, but left the reader to decide for themselves.

    While reading the book (the Killing Joke), I never really left it with the thought that Batman killed the joker at the end. To me, it's pretty much like the animated film. It's really a fascinating glimpse into an exploration of their history and relationship. Batman's heard hundreds of jokes from The joker throughout the years. And none of it has ever been funny. Not to Batman. But on this one night, after everything that had just happened, the joker finally told Batman a joke that he appreciated. And it's also kind of about Batman stepping outside of himself and his comfort zone, if you ask me. The joker just tried to drive someone very close to Batman mad, and nearly succeeded. And he crippled another. The entire experience has caused Batman to look in on himself. And, after this harrowing experience, Bruce allows himself a little bit of well-earned relief by actually enjoying one of the joker's jokes. It's really a fantastic exploration into these two characters and specifically Batman's psyche. But I wouldn't say that Batman killed the joker after this.

    Batman utilizes the mutants because he’s able to grasp the basic idea that it’s better to have a bunch of mindless meatheads fight for good and be taught some values rather than just leave them to run about the streets causing harm to good people. It’s obvious why he did it. Whether or not they’re doing it from a place of good, what they’re doing IS good, and with how done Batman is at this point in his life, he’s done with the foolish idealism of his past (like with his no kill rule) and is taking the pragmatic approach of “if they’re doing good, that’s good enough for me with how desperate we currently are”.

However, if you actually see the way the mainstream media treats cops and the growing crime problems in American cities today, you would be shocked at how accurate Miller was in foretelling it, albeit unwittingly. Vee, I called it in the previous video that you're misreading Miller's satire as HIS words, only for you to say it AGAIN, much more literally this time in this video, adding a "probably". Sorry, "probably" won't cut it. Miller is a libertarian so it is one of those cases when protagonist and author are not necessarily in the agreement. Which is a lot of cases, really. Most people are subpar writers and can only write characters who are more or less a variation of themselves. It's a set that can work wonders, but still it's really an odd mistake to make to just assume automatically that characters author sympathizes with are basically author avatar. I mean, Alan Moore definitely loved to write Rorschach and told in some interviews they are similar, in a way. Moore is a Marxist, while Rorschach is something indescribably leaning onto far right (even though I have a feeling that the character's disposition on what is far right now would've been a neck snap). Honestly, how hard is this concept to gasp that you blame Miller for having 'absolute'? I don't think I can explain this concept in any other words, even though I am a PhD in political science.
    Oh, and movie also had writers, you know, other than Miller. However minimal their input was it is not to be underestimated for warping the material further down this line.

    • @JohnWilliams-wl9px
      @JohnWilliams-wl9px 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Exactly people I seen who call DKR who just says it’s right wing propaganda tends not to know Miller’s views, that don’t fully conform to that. The man flat out hated Trump apparently. Miller has also gone record saying he was influenced by Aryn Rand’s objectivism philosophy.
      So, Miller’s political views much like anyone else are more complicated than simply being right or left.

    I think that the goofy tone was meant to display a different era of Batman. The first part of the story is the Golden Age Batman. He’s violent, he uses guns, he’s a loner. In the midpoint, it’s Silver Age Batman. He has a lot of weird bat themed gadgets and vehicles and the villains so goofy stuff like the mind controlling lipstick. At the end of the story, we see the Bronze/Modern Age Batman. The story’s darker tone is back and we get that scene where Batman breaks the gun over his knee. “These are loud and clumsy. These are the weapons of cowards.” Plus, we have the fight with Superman, starting the idea that they’re enemies.

    I always thought batman going to kill the joker made sense in this story because he's already proven for decades he doesn't WANT to kill the joker but now he's living on borrowed time after a decade of drinking aging and stagnation. Chivalrous code or not the joker living after batmans death with no one around except maybe superman to deal with him is a loose end batman may want to tie up. This would've been much more thematically resonant if frank actually decided to let bruce have a heart attack at the end since at least in the book his age and physical deterioration are brought up more more. Then since more people appreciated batman after the riots during nuclear winter, public outcry, whether the government caved or not, Would've forced Clark's boy Scout side to voluntarily cease activity for killing his partner. That would mark the end of vigilantes in this universe

  • @210rebelboy

    I think your take on Bruce deciding to kill Joker, specifically that it shouldn't be premeditated, and should be in reaction to something, isn't taking into account that Joker just killed over 200 people in one go. I think Batman could make up his mind at that point. What more could the Joker do? He's been killing almost nonstop.
    Also, perfectly fine with Bruce spitting on Joker. I'll admit it caught me off guard, too, but I think it's perfectly in line with an older Bruce in this universe. The Dark Knight Rises universe to me is fucking grimy, and Batman isn't apart from the grime. I guess that's why the old lady outfit works for me too, it's ugly, but I'd never seen Bruce wear a disguise, and in my eyes, that's just a staple of the character now. Admittedly, this graphic novel is amongst the first and the few that I've read, which might color my opinion, but when I read this book, it made me see Batman in a totally different light. You said it yourself, this Batman recognizes that he has very little time left to act, but at a certain point, I think Bruce forgets about the mortality aspect of things, he's not thinking about deadlines, he just has the mission, and that's to clean Gotham up completely, to say fuck what anyone else says, Gotham is mine. The Batman that would've hesitated to kill the Joker retired a decade ago. Now Joker and their whole relationship is just an obstacle and he isn't going to be the crutch to Joker's insanity anymore. Their past is just the past, and Batman's plans can't include the Joker.

    I liked the books better. When it came out it was groundbreaking. I read it as a teenager; my Dad shared it with me when he was around my age now. Things were different back than and it got changed into a movie 20 years later. Basically it is just decent; but revolutionary when it was a book. I was disappointed with it as a movie, but I was with Killing Joke as well. DCAU seems to always mess up the stories when animating them. They should just leave them in comic form. It's much better to picture the voices in your head.

    I don't know how closely the animation hews to the source material as I've never actually had the source material in front of me. (Legally blind, comic books are a little hard to read so I typically don't.)
    Politically, both sides are guilty of characterizing the most extreme people who might agree with some part of their philosophy as being that "side". People say "noo, I don't do that, the other side does that!" But on the right, the portrayal of anyone on the left as a communist isn't just media caricature-I've met people who do that. And I lived through 2020 in Portland, Oregon, so I know just how much violence was done against so-called "nazis" (definition seems to include anyone on the right and anyone on the left that doesn't encourage the violence…)
    I dunno what Frank Miller was going for there. I don't know if he's on the left or the right, but he'd perceive Batman as being on the right, certainly. Funny that he got Green Arrow to help him out in Pt. 2 given that Ollie has traditionally been an open communist. DCAU softened that to making him "an old lefty". Maybe his point is that people seem to like to make excuses for their behavior couched in their political ideology? It's sure easier than taking responsibility for your own choices, isn't it?
    This is considered one of the essential comics for understanding Batman … this and The Killing Joke. I'd say though that if these two are your education of who Batman is, you had a poor education indeed. Alec Baldwin's sad portrayal of the character comes from those comics being the only sources of inspiration.
