    Thank you Griffin for putting this together! You really helped narrow down the differences between the two cameras in the real world. I love my C200 but we are renting a C500 for a trip to the UK next month so I'm excited to get my hands on one and shoot with it.

    • @pbfilms6356

      @@GriffinConway I'll be shooting corporate videos, a documentary we are working on (actually, we are renting a C500 in London in a couple of weeks so can't wait to try it out!) and weddings. Reason we need the C500 is that we are trying to keep the footage 6K to match the Red footage we've already shot. I am also bringing my C200 for 4K RAW as well.

    I agree but is it worth double the price of the c200??? Is the image quality twice as good??? Probably not. The c200 and c500 mark ii raw in 4K have the same bit rate. It’s only when you shoot 5.9k the bit rate increases which is obvious. I own a c200 and no camera on the market in that price can match the quality and bit rate in raw

    • @GriffinConway
      @GriffinConway  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jean pierre Maurel image quality is definitely not “twice as good”...in fact in some cases it is almost exactly the same. The c500 Mark ii presents some benefits that will make sense for certain productions, but for the majority of people the c200 will be a much better value.

      Thanks for checking the video out! I agree it is a big jump. If you think the extra features will help you do your job more efficiently or higher quality then it may be a good move, but if you won’t use the extra features it probably makes sense to stick with the c300 Mark ii!

  • @stalman
    @stalman 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great review. How do you like to monitor raw footage on your C200 when shooting raw? The lack of clog2 has made it a real struggle to create a monitor lut

    • @GriffinConway
      @GriffinConway  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tyler Stalman thanks for checking it out Tyler. I’m a fan of your channel and the content you make. The way I typically monitor the c200 when shooting in raw is switch the color space to bt709 and pay attention to the waveform and zebras. I usually set the zebras to 5% and 15% and try to keep the bottom two stops empty (as long as nothing is clipping on top of the waveform). Crimson engine has a really good video on this. Unfortunately though, there isn’t a way to add a stylized lut to an external monitor and accurately judge your exposure. I think it is more accurate to use the built in canon lut.

    • @stalman
      @stalman 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks @@GriffinConway! It's so frustrating that the output isn't straightforward on the C200. For example if using the CanonLog3 preset, whatever the signal is coming out of HDMI and SDI, it's definitely not log.
      But the workflow all the pros using Alexa and Red describe is that creating a monitor lut they can trust is critical, but they're able to actually monitor the signal they're capturing.
      It all drives me crazy

    • @GriffinConway
      @GriffinConway  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @tylerstalman right there with you! Super frustrating for sure and actually one of the main reasons I am considering purchasing the c500 Mark ii (you can monitor in clog 2 which is what the raw imports as in most NLE’s).
      I’m not sure about all monitors, but I know the ninja v converts the signal to “video level” instead of full level which is what I believe the camera is recording when in raw mode. This basically makes it look more contrasty than the log image for some reason. I don’t know enough about it to accurately explain, but there is a really good article I found here:
      www.thepostprocess.com/2019/09/24/how-to-deal-with-levels-full-vs-video/
      Hope this helps Tyler!

    • @GriffinConway
      @GriffinConway  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    i seen your video about C70 vs C200, but in that you consider many things like usability and practicality. But i mostly look just image quality only. Canon placed c70 below c200. c70 launch price is around 5.5k were c200 launch price is 7.5k. The colors from c200 is way better. Also c200 has more cinematic look. So apart from the files size problem, i think c200 is best deal for 5.5k$. What you think

    Thanks Brother, great breakdown and companion piece to the C500 2 review. Really helps let me know what to expect if I switch over. I know what you mean about the s35 v FF, just that extra level of richness. Have you watched Dark on Netflix? I believe it’s the LF , but to my eye I felt like I was watching my old Mamiya 67 contact sheets come to life. Made me want to move back to a larger sensor. I also like the ability to get anamorphics in there, does it natively desqeeze?

    @damiencooper 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would've loved to see some outdoor DR test. backlit with some clouds in the back. I shoot a lot of my stuff backlit and wonder if the C500 has better DR. But watching this and the C500 video you put out I feel like there really isn't enough image quality improvement to justify the price. A decent chunk of the features I just wouldn't use and the lack of slow motion just makes this camera very undesirably for me personally

    • @GriffinConway
      @GriffinConway  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ya it’s definitely lacking if you use 120p a lot. For me, I like anamorphic shooting and also full frame and mostly use 24p and 60p so it’s perfect for me. There’s not a huge dynamic range difference when shooting raw, but the shadows/blacks are much cleaner and the XF-avc codec is great when you want very similar quality but with way smaller files.

    • @damiencooper
      @damiencooper 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Griffin Conway why way smaller? Can you choose different compression rates? The XF-AVC in the C300III is 810mbit at 4K60 🤔

    • @GriffinConway
      @GriffinConway  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      True the 810mbs for the c500 60p is similar to the 1gbs of the c200, but usually I only use 60p for about 10-20% of my shooting. At 24p it is only 410mb which is less than half the file size

      @@GriffinConway @Griffin Conway Yea, i thought so. I saw one second hand for around 3000 euro's ( Living in holland ) I make myself so excited to get on hold of one of these camera's! Been making videos back in the days a lot. And i love it. Now i'm saving money to get a really nice camera soon. At first i had my eyes on the Blackmagic and GH5. But i could not really decide between these to. Also i really prefer a ergonomic and robust body, And the Canon C versions just looks perfect for me! Also the many options and quility of the Canon is really really nice.
      Btw. On wich hardware do you edit your video's? Im really choosing between a good PC versus a Mac. I personally think the PC is underrated for this kind of work. But i'm looking forward to the future and a Macbook perhaps lasting longer. Any thoughts on this? Maybe a good idea for a video if you havent allready haha. :')
      I am in love with the c500. But 7500,- euro's maybe is a bridge to far, concerning that the c200 also delivers great footage. MAN, im stuck in the film making playground hahaha.

      Kind regards and take care from Holland.
