Canon EOS C300 Mark III Hands On and C500 Mark II Comparison

  • A hands on video of the new Canon C300 Mark III covering a lot of the camera's basics, comparing it to the C500 Mark II and testing out features like the new DGO sensor and 120fps 4K.
    We’ve been pretty practical in our approach and are looking forward to seeing how the camera goes in more scientific tests, but hopefully some of what we cover here is useful to anyone who is thinking of using one.
    tallstoryfilms....
    Note: Most of our filming was in DCI 4096x2160 but this video is UHD 3840x2160, so rather than downscaling the shots we’ve just cropped the sides off.

    Best video by far of all I watched until now about C300 mark III. Congratulations for the good work. It would be great to see a deep explanation and test about the dynamc range in skin tones. And compare it aswell with the C500 mii. It would be great aswell to see it in action with an Atlas Orion. Another cool idea for a next vid: it would be great a comparassion with a Red Camera on the dynamic range aspect and overall cinematic feeling (cause I think Canon right now has improved a lot). Which one to consider for Feature film, I don't need more than 60fps as it's drama. I would love the presence of full frame, my two questions would be considering the noise floor and lowlight performance
    Suppose C500 MK2 with full frame would have better lowlight but that's where we have noise in shadows, right (according to many users) would this be fixed in firmware by Canon?

    • @TallstoryfilmsAus
      @TallstoryfilmsAus  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ragunaath Rathnam Id say anything in that department is unlikely to be changed in a firmware update. With 6K full frame the C500 is probably marketed more towards the feature film side as a competitor to the Alexa, but the C300 could definitely handle whatever you could throw at it.

    Looks like they added support of XF-AVC Long GOP and XF-AVC Proxy format to the C500MKii. Now time to figure out if FF is that important or if we'd rather have a better picture which might be negligible to the untrained eye. I feel that most will go for the C300MKiii because its not a huge change in workflow to those already working with super 35. Did going back to a smaller sensor make you feel any at all limited?

    • @TallstoryfilmsAus
      @TallstoryfilmsAus  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've had a lot of time using the C200 and C300MKII so it was pretty straightforward going back to Super 35. Full frame is amazing, but the features they've put in to the C300MKIII are useful enough to make it a proper contest between the two cameras. I actually think deciding on what lenses you want to be using/can afford is probably a good way to help make the decision.

    • @TallstoryfilmsAus
      @TallstoryfilmsAus  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Daymian Mejia Yeah the costs can add up a bit more with the canon cams. However they do have a few more higher end features than the FX9 which feels a bit more firmly aimed at a TV market. The internal raw and PL options for the C300III mean it could very easily be a feature doco camera or used in commercials in the same space as the Alexa, where the FX9 probably isn’t going to cut it

      Monitor and viewfinder work simultaneously, no problems there. At first I was really annoyed that the C500MKII's audio controls were on that side, but then I got used to it. When Im shooting handheld theyre actually in a better spot for me around that side because I dont have to move the camera away from my body to adjust, and if it's a sit-down interview it doesnt matter too much. First of all - thank you for a great review of the upcoming camera.
    At 04:19 you've pointed "RAW 12-bit 100fps" - is it true? Because official specs saying that camera works in 12 bit mode under 30 fps and 50-120 fps automatically switching it to 10-bit RAW.

    • @TallstoryfilmsAus
      @TallstoryfilmsAus  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No worries and great point. It should be saying 10 bit raw for anything above 30fps that’s filmed in raw as the camera automatically switches to 10bit when you start going to higher frame rates

      @TallstoryfilmsAus  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just depends on what your needs are. As well as raw, the C300 is a bit easier to use on the shoulder with larger lenses as well as it’s got more of a traditional form factor. If neither of those are a priority the C70 is pretty fantastic!

    Going from MK2, in-camera IS is a big change and something I am really curious about. Since I do a lot of handheld work, I've been using mostly lenses with IS. But you don't recommend using the in-camera IS with non IS lenses? Fantastic review btw. Thanks.

    • @TallstoryfilmsAus

      You can use the in-camera IS with non IS lenses if you want, I just find it introduces a bit of a smoothness that I can find looks unnatural. Not everyone feels the same way though so worth a test for yourself to see what suits you

    Question: Do you know if there is a speed booster that would work with EF lenses and the C300mkIII's Super 35 sensor?

    • @TallstoryfilmsAus
      @TallstoryfilmsAus  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're welcome! Re: speed boosters, not that I know of. As far as I'm aware speed boosters are always adapting from one lens type to another, there arent any that just take S35 to full frame. Could be a handy thing to have, but then again I've really hated using speed boosters in the past as have had some issues with them bugging out. Also it's not ideal to be shooting through another layer of glass if you can avoid it.

I'm a long time Canon user and current C300 Mark II owner, and of course I'm considering the upgrade to the Mark III. However, I would love to have a go at some footage from the camera shot in the Clog2. Hopefully Black Magic Pocket 6k will come out with a new low priced 6 K Camera with a 4K RAW 120 fps solution as a backup camera. Wouldn't be surprised. Hey guys, thanks for the great video, is there something strange about the 4K 100/120p bitrate, how come it is the same as 24/25p bitrate, when the 50/60p is double, is it conforming in camera and playing back at 24/25 hence a low bitrate, or is canon doing some sort of line skipping or something strange when it comes to the 4K 100/120p?

    • @TallstoryfilmsAus
      @TallstoryfilmsAus  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      George Guille Photography No worries. At the higher frame rates the bitrate does drop down so you don’t chew through card space when shooting 120. But lower bitrate can also mean a drop in quality so just got to be ready for that. However we found the quality of the footage to be really good even at high frame rates even with the lower bitrate. Not sure about the line skipping.

      Loud&Clear appreciate it. Having that full frame sensor with the canon ergonomics is pretty killer on the C500. It also can do 2 x anamorphic at a higher res than the C300 so if you’re delivering for Netflix that’s pretty huge.
