      Thanks dude! (me neither, ha) This was actually the first time that I had sat down and done the entire math - probably spent a few weeks going over all of my financials, hypotheticals, etc. to quadruple check all my math etc. and it was really empowering to be able to look at this decision from a really informed financial foundation.

    one thing i didn't hear in the whole mixture - - if you're an artist, having next tools to make your job easier with better quality results would be reason enough to absorb extra cost. Not everyone who loves commercial photography is focused on just the bottom line.
    The passion will show, and its those results that can drive in the upscale clientel that would be $500 -$600 rental for your work.
    This was an awesome video presentation, made lots of business sense.
    Dont forget to enjoy the art in Commercial Arts :)

    very helpful - and almost exactly how i come up with numbers. for me and therefore my clients, two things are most important - image quality, timely job turnaround. i would argue your current clients may not pay more than they already do... but new clients will pay a rental fee equal to what they'd pay from a rental house, of course plus your day rate. i keep old clients at their original rate and as i add new gear, introduce new rates to new clients, usually plus an annual or bi annual percentage increase.
    i am sure you will get clients specifically because you have the c500ii - as well as shift your work into a new level of quality and ease of process.

    Love the well thought out video! I think it also depends on what kind of clients you want to work with as well, if you’re clients are mostly film producers hiring you as a cinematographer then the upgrade might help you get more gigs but if, like myself, you’re servicing business owners who don’t know the difference between a DSLR and a cinema camera it doesn’t help you get anymore work. So for me, I would only want this camera to make my passion projects like making my own films. So in that case I have to decide when I can invest in one of these cameras when my business is making enough money to invest in our own passion projects! Anyways, that’s just my different perspective for where I’m coming from, but thanks so much for the super helpful breakdown of how you’d work it out! I just subscribed 🙌🏼

    Hey! I'm running very very similar numbers. My working camera has been an FS5 for 4 years now and I'm thinking about making a massive upgrade or just sticking with it. My day rate actually tripled from when I started out to where I am now with the FS5. So, when I'm trying to justify getting a nice fancy camera I want (eg, C500ii) I wonder if. I shouldn't just budget for the work I have right now - but for the work I want to have in say... 2-3 years time. Risky though.
    I don't think its just the camera that gets you the work entirely. My rate when up when my camera stayed the same over the past few years because I improved. But. I definitely missed some gigs cause I didn't have an FS7 or a C300. There's like a class/feature bridge some producers need you to cross. If they've never worked with me before and it a choice between me and another guy both with good looking showreels - they'll likely go for the fancier camera.
    All this being said - the C300iii is probably the wisest upgrade; 10k, pays off reasonably fast and its the perfect S35 camera, its only "downside" is being S35. I just wish it could have speed booster put on it and I'd be done! A bit nervous about going back to S35 FOV, which is ridiculous. Even if they put a silly magnifying glass by the sensor with tape, I'd be done. I don't want the FF sensor, just the FF FOV.
    Anyhow - great video. Money maths is the thing that actually matters when upgrading.

    Love this video Chris. I feel I am at a very similar place to you in terms of gear and rentals. I charge the same for my gear and I have the same camera packages, and I am also looking at pulling the trigger on the c500 Mark ii.
    The main thing I keep going back to, is when I originally spent $9k for my original c200 and some media and batteries it was super scary for me...but it also helped launch my career to a place that I would have never been if I was shooting on a DSLR. I wonder if the c500 Mark ii would be able to help bump me to the next level, or should I just buy a used Alexa mini since everyone loves those so much lol

    • @ChrisFrancis
      @ChrisFrancis  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Griffin Conway yea it’s a tough call for sure. The C200 is so much more bang for the buck, but would a “more pro” camera help level up in career? San Diego is probably a lot different than LA when it comes to cameras that are in demand. I’ve found that most people down here are good with making what you have work with the production and if Director is adamant about a certain cam production will rent it. Curious what it’s like up there for you.

  • @matrixxhunter
    @matrixxhunter 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Without a doubt the c500 mark ii would be my choice if I could afford it, but if I forgo my desire for good autofocus The ursa mini pro g2 is just as good in a lot of ways and better in some for a third of the price.

      I have to agree on that note... charge for your gear and services separately. If a director asks you to rent a specific camera, you don't own and you are on set... something goes wrong with that cam, you can bring out your own camera and ask the director if he wants to waste 1/2 day while you get the rental replaced... just saying!

    Great video. Thank you for making it and sharing it. Three weeks ago I would have said, "Buy it." The Coronavirus has created a lot of unknowns. I had some shoots that were a "go." Currently, they are on hold. Until who knows when. To spend the cash right now is a bit scary. I think for clients who are on hold, they don't care about the difference between the C500 and C200 at this moment. They are more concerned with will they go out of business, will they get their kids through this scare, etc. If and when business returns to normal, buying the C500 could be a smart purchase. I was going to buy one if a multi commercial gig came through. It didn't. So I am making do with the gear that is paid off in full until we have a clearer view of the future. If you book a great gig and the deposit arrives, that is a great moment to buy new gear. If you buy new gear with the mentality of, "If I buy it, the gig will come," it's a sad thing to be staring at the gear that is costing you money but not earning any.

    My big questions here is how you charge $250 a day for c200 rental. In the UK you could easily rent that camera as a full package for the equivalent of $160-200 and I’m sure it’s not more expensive in the US. What am I missing here? Also, day rates themselves would be between $350-600 tops (if you worked in London) so I have no idea how I’d ever add $250 for bringing my camera along!

    • @ChrisFrancis
      @ChrisFrancis  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Jim, that's interesting to hear. I've also gotten feedback on this video blasting me for not charging way more than $250/day for the camera rental - I guess it really depends on your location and market. In the US if you were to put something similar to my camera package together at a rental house or an online place like Lensrentals.com it would probably cost around $300-$400/day, so for my market in southern California I've never gotten pushback on charging my clients (or producers) $250/day for my camera package.

    Dear Chris, just wondering how do you finance all your other equipment like editing mac, insurance, software, travel expenses, other gear you have if you just charge your labor + only equipment just used for the particular job? Is that then included in the labor fee? In my case, I have one single base daily charge rate that is calculated to cover all costs + insurance + amortization of all equipment I own + wage + planned extra further investment and it is than adjusted based on 30%/50%/70% monthly utilization.

    • @ChrisFrancis

      @DeanHarringtonimages 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends on the client... many people have a basic kit package that includes a camera, lights, audio, assistants (or not) for a specific price. Most clients on corporate levels do not have a clue about gear. I've had clients who didn't care and when things went wrong with something on set or location, consider you've lost a client. The ones that do know about production understand what is needed. You need backup.

    • @MatthewTyndall
      @MatthewTyndall 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry didn’t see the reply. For the c500mkii I’m charging at least $500/day in local rentals (to trusted colleagues) and more for corporate shoots. I normally tag my gear at 5% of total cost of my package for a day rental. So my $16,000 body, $1,500 worth of memory, $10,000 of lensing (sigma cine zooms), $3,000 tripod, and a couple $1000 in misc accessories gets me to my ideal of $1500. You are charging less than 2% of the camera cost alone and I’m sure you lenses and batteries and accessories make that pretty low. Only time I break this rule is when I have a camera that has a pretty set in stone industry rate like my Amira. Normally around my region it’s going $1k a day for the core package which is about 2.5%. Raise them rates!
