  • Most know I LOVE the Stormlight Archives book series by Brandon Sanderson. I even have two shardblades in the back of my office. So when prepping for my interview with Hansi, I saw Blind Guardian covered my favorite character, Kaladin, and wrote a song about him. How could I NOT do this song?!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Blind Guardian performing "Violent Shadows" for the first time.

If you like Blind Guardian up to here, you should definitely try out a song from "Nightfall in Middle-Earth" - an album based on J.R.R. Tolkiens Silmarillion. When people talk about how amazing Hansi is, they often gloss over Andre Olbrich. Blind Guardian wouldn't be the band they are without him and his incredibly unique style. Part of it is his tone, but he's also just different than a lot of power metal guitarists. Nice to hear that appreciation from someone who is making no secret about being mostly about the voice.

@@townazier I think OP was saying it's nice to see bands branch out and do something different to Tolkien, as he has been the main fantasy inspiration for metal bands over the years. Blind Guardian are a great example (not sure how many others there would be to be honest) of paying great tribute to the man himself, but also covering plenty of other authors/books - Otherland by Tad Williams, the Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan, the Witcher book series and this song just to name a few. I know there is a band called Caladan Brood who are themed around the Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson as well, similar in style to Summoning (who I think is the main group you were referring to in your comment).

    • @JoshuaGraves113

@@arcticus4758 There's a band named Summoning, it's (mostly) instrumental but they directly reference Tolkien as their inspiration. Albums, song names and lyrics are all taken directly from Tolkien's works.

I was playing Sacred 2, I had given up on side quests (just too many of them), but decided to do one last one because I ran into the quest giver in the middle of a crossroads. I almost gave up on the quest, because it was so long and multi-stage, but decided to see it through to the end. Who could have guessed that the main reward for the quest would be an ingame concert by a band I'd never heard of before? The song was so great I looked it up to find out who made it.

I'm soon 54 years old, and you awaken the "teenager" in me when I watch your videos on all the music that bathed my teenage years, and the following years. Thank you very much, and this song you chose from Blind Guardian, is one of my favorites from the last album, huge title and huge album. You MUST get into Bad Omens, Elizabeth!!
Noah Sebastian’s range and what he can do is beyond incredible. It will probably take you a good 3 to 4 songs to get a full idea of what he is truly capable of. He goes from harsh vocals to a HUGE clean sound to almost a falsetto?? If you will. However he is hands down the most underrated frontman in the game right now! Those who don’t know haven’t hopped on the bandwagon yet. I would start with these.
The Death Of Piece Of Mind
    Dethrone
    Just Pretend
    Limits
AND YES….trust that it will take all 4 if not more to get into what Noah can really do. I truly think you’ll be in love! This is a MUST for someone like you who gets so into what vocalist are doing because what they are doing is unrivaled in this industry right now!!
They are a band that every single song almost sounds like a different band entirely……but it ALL sounds like Bad Omens if that makes any sense.
    Merry Christmas!!

First off, great reaction as always. I also didn't know Blind guardian have songs about fantasy books, so thank you for that.
Your enthusiasm for music and more specifically any genre of music never fails to amaze me and make me smile. You are my favourite reactor to begin with but now after learning that you love fantasy your spot as my favourite reactor is rock solid 😊.
The stormlight archive series is a series I'm waiting to be completed to start reading it as bitter experience with other authors (Rothfuss for example) has thought me to wait for the series to be finished before I start it. I know Sanderson is very profilic and he finishes his series but still... I've read his other books btw and I loved them.
If you want to hear more of Hansi , I'd like to suggest the song Fiddler on the green by demons& wizards. The group is a side project of Hansi and Iced earths's guitar player as far as I can remember. It's a great song with great story and Hansi came up with the story after events in real life.
Lastly for a fantasy series to read I'd like to suggest The Malazan Book Of The Fallen by Steven Erikson. It is truly monumental in scale, the world is absolutely huge and the characters even more so. You have quite a few races, God's(that actually are actively involved in the world and can be manipulated, killed or used for a character's benefit against their will), dragons that are actually sentient and have a huge impact on the world and story and the world including some characters are 400 000 years old. The main series is 10 huge , lengthy books although the series at the moment is 20+ books as Erikson and the co-creatot Esselmont are still writing books about it. As a disclaimer of sorts quite a few people are out off by the series as it is very complex and both authors do Not spoon feed you information and there is quite a bit of ambiguity in the series but at the same time the story is soo massively rewarding , if you persist and read through it and the best part is it becomes better and better on rereads as there is so much information and things going on at any given time . Also one of the things I love the most about all of it is that the main theme of books is compassion.
This comment has turned out way too long but I really hope you read it .

Hansi is a wonderful human, as are the band!
I was crew chief on mainstage at Bloodstock 2009, Blind Guardian was subheadline on Saturday (and thanks to some audience members being awful and firing large heavy projectiles at Cradle of Filth, BG effectively headlined that night!)
I distinctly remember mistaking Hansi for one of their crew, because he was walking around wearing a tour crew t-shirt and had the look of a guitar tech 😅. Hansi thought it was hilarious and we had a good laugh, we kept in touch for a while afterwards, but it was an absolute pleasure to work with him and the band.
And their actual guitar tech and I spent the entire show singing side of stage complete with cheesy power metal hand gestures.
Hands down the most fun I had all weekend was with this band. Hansi learnt all my stage crew's names and personally thanked everyone individually after the set, which is rare for musicians to acknowledge the stagehands and monitor engineers at a festival!

I originally discovered Blind Guardian because of their Wheel of Time songs - The Wheel of Time, and Ride Into Obsession - the former is one of my favorite songs ever, it is truly as epic as the series it is about. Stormlight is definitely among my top 4 series, paired with Wheel of Time, Cradle, and Worm. I'm glad they're finally doing homages to Stormlight, it deserves all the highlighting and advertising there can be.
Anyway, my initial reason for writing this comment is to shill Worm by Wildbow, it's a web series that ascends its genre.

Hansi has managed to recapture his voice from the 90's in recent years, he was singing more reserved for a long time, singing the more intense notes in a lower key or in a calmer voice live, and things like that. But he's not holding back anymore, even when the band was playing the entire "Somewhere Far Beyond" album from 1992 this year, he was singing everything just like on the album.
