    As a therapist, I have found that patients with chronic pain who smoke find the thought of stopping smoking very difficult, especially if it has been their coping strategy, their “best friend” for years. You have provided much needed information to motivate patients to make that important decision to stop smoking. And, to encourage those who are still on the fence after your video, I’ve seen the pain of many reduce significantly after that temporary increase in pain. It does get better! Your videos are an incredible resource. I strongly recommend them to all my pain patients!

    I quit smoking 40 of years ago 1983. Friend of mine mum asked me to help his son ( he was a drinker and smoker ) in front of their family, my answer was:
    " If your want to lived, STOP "
    Enjoy your day Dr.

    I quit a month ago from both vaping & smoking. I did it slowly. Lost 15 lbs., increased my workouts, cut down from 1 pack a day to a 1/2 pack. Then quit cigarettes. A month later I quit vaping as well. So now a month later with no nicotine I gained 5 lbs., but my clothes are a little looser. Smoking dehydrates you, and the 5 lbs. extra is probably my correct hydrated weight. I have all sorts of minor aches & pains now. I thought that I was getting arthritis, gum issues, etc. I finally figured out that nicotine is a powerful pain killer, and was dependent on that pain killer.

    I have slipped discs and a pinched nerve. My original pain mgmt doctor was very forthcoming with information and my situation, and stressed that I had to stop smoking because it was not helping the situation. I wish he had, as you did here, be as forthcoming with making the connections between pain and smoking. Thank you! 🌺👠

    I had no idea of this!! One more reason to quit smoking!
    I will say though as you mentioned-it is SO hard. I know it’s probably going to kill me one day and that just makes me more depressed. I’m going to try these 4 d’s. My doctor just gave me patches and I have some gum too.

    If someone is injury , can the cigarettes reduce the pain

    • @DrAndreaFurlan
      @DrAndreaFurlan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That is an interesting question. In theory yes because nicotine is a painkiller. But I would never recommend someone to smoke as a strategy to reduce pain.

    Odd....... while yes I am on prescription medications- opiates, benzos and muscle relaxers (flexeril specifically), my neurologist and pain management providers have both agreed that having me vaping nicotine (only started vaping nicotine about a year ago on the recommendation from neuro) canhelp with the chronic pain (CRPS) and my tourettes as well as keeping me from needing even higher amounts of the opiates and benzos as well as it helping the severe dysautonomia that I has been getting worse over the past several years but has seemingly leveled off (sort of) since upping the amount of nicotine in my eliquid (on recommendation from both neuro and pain management) within the past month. Neuro and pain management have also said to use my vaping as a sort of rescue inhaler in terms of how much to use vaping wise.
    As weird as I have found their recommendation to be (for a never smoker of anything) to vape nicotine type eliquid (not CBD), it definitely seems to help some.

    So - by their interaction - does nicotine increase or decrease the effects of opioids? Often when I feel my (opioid) painkiller wearing off, having a cigarette will actually bring back the feeling of it working for a short while.

    I quit smoking and suddenly my FMS is horrible and I'm exhausted. ☹ I already knew it has pain-killing properties. I didn't think it would make such a difference. I'm pretty upset. Feel horrible 2 months later.

      Hi Andrea, I'm sorry to hear that. Smoking creates a huge physical dependence in the body. It may take a few months for these symptoms to go away. Please check with your doctor to see if there is nothing else causing these symptoms.

    Sorry, this isn't about cigarettes (but it IS about chronic pain). What is your opinion on the use of Chlorpromazine? While not a pain med, it IS often used as a pre-op and in it's early life (in the 1950s) it was used alone as an anaesthetic for surgery. Surely if people can literally undergo surgery with it, it should have some numbing or analgesic effects at smaller doses?

      Tobacco companies get very, very rich.
      Note: If one can stay off tobacco until until 21 yrs old then they are likely not going to use. Big Tobacco companies rely on teenage users to replace the dead users. They got me at 13 yrs old 1965. I am so glad it is not considered to be "cool" by being a young smoker these dqys. None of my kids smoke and for that I am grateful.
