MSR Elixir 2 person tent review - our MOST USED backpacking tent!

- Here is a review of our most used 2 person backpacking tent. It is not the best wild camping tent out there, nor does it truly excel in any particular area, but the MSR Elixir 2 backpacking tent is our most frequently used 2 person tent.
Why? I think it's because it ticks so many boxes. We are not particularly weight conscious, so the 2.45kg weight isn't too much of a worry. RRP £340 is reasonable for a mid-range branded tent. We like our comforts backpacking and wild camping so the liveable space, 2 doors, 2 vestibules and plenty of features really helps.
I think it sits because a 3 season tent and 4 season tent. The fly is fairly low and there's a fair amount of solid fabric on the inner tent. There's a nice balance between protection and ventilation.
We like well made camping gear. Unfortunately, some of the ultralight backpacking gear loses quality, durability and longevity. The thicker fabrics of the MSR Elixir 2 mean the tent is more likely to last a long time and can be pitched virtually anywhere with it's thick ground sheet and freestanding tent design. There are plenty of pegging points to strap the tent down in challenging conditions.
There are lots of complaints with the seams on MSR tents. Fortunately we have not encountered these issues. If in doubt, you can seam seal the tent yourself for as little as £10 (use Gear Aid Seam Sealer).

I've had mine a few years now, and love it. I'm always looking at other tents, but haven't found a better 2 person 3 season tent in this price range.
I own two Elixir 2 tents and one Elixir 1 and I approve this message 😂 great tents done thousands of miles with them. My old inner has now been upgraded to a 4 season inner 😉
Great review as always Andy.
I have to agree with you that there are lighter, stronger and cheaper tents out there, but if it suits you, that's all that really matters.
Stiii love my mongar 2, budget friendly and basically a rip off of this tent. Just brought a second in purple, as my son wants his own tent now. Used mine at least 30 times now, mostly when dry but used it for two winters now too. No issues with it, always use the ground sheet and a silver mat inside to protect the floor. Rick
You should review some American/ Australian tents. Big Agnes, Nemo and Sea to Summit!
Hi Andy ,,that’s my tent 😁bought mine last year online from a German coymany under just £200 ,,what a buy ,,with foot print ,,did over 200 miles SWPath also South Downs Way four months ago ,,just brilliant tent loads off room ,,even people come up to you and say ,,nice tent😁it looks great when up like you said ,,simple just a great tent ,,all the best Stewart Wiltshire ,,ps I have had no problems at all,,⛺️🏃♂️👍
I bought the Elixir 1 recently and i am delighted with it. A little on the heavy side, But I like the vestibule opening options, One third, two thirds and fully open. Unfortunately there is no toggle to hold it in the fully open position so I carry a small clip. The loose centre pole is crude. A clip to secure it and stopping it rubbing on the other poles would have been nice.
That was my first wild camping tent I purchased , I’ve used it in all weathers and it brilliant I got the Y pegs with mine , not sure why they have changed to shepherd hook pegs 😊
I’ve had mine for a couple of months, done a few summit camps in it and a couple of easier camps and love it, it’s suddenly become my favourite 3 season tent I have
I have the nx2 and its such a good tent, dont think msr get the street cred they deserve on the scene you dont see many people that have one ever change from them do you. They just dont seem trendy do they even though they perform so well
I bet you got a flat pitch pitching on the ground where you are on todays post… your posts are great and thorough . You make good viewing, V enjoyable listening to you.
I was wondering if the ball hits the tent,is it a 4...?
"every single island in the Outer Hebrides"? I doubt that very much 😂
Cheers Andy,
Just been out with this one. brilliant tent. Going up to helvellyn next week for a summit camp. Fingers crossed the wind is forgiving!
Anyone know how well this tent would hold up in reasonable winds & rain?
We've had it in storms!
Sorry, how thick are poles on this tent? I cant find that info anywhere..
8.5mm from memory.
I adore my elixir 2. Just to lay back and look at the canopy makes me happy.
It really is a beautiful tent.
My nephew has a vango helium ul2 which is super quick and easy to erect and packs super small, but I wouldn't trade my elixir for it.
Apart from weight mine seems bombproof and sturdy my first sort of proper tent I don't have money for multiple tents or the Need tbh, alpkit polestar 1 and exiler 2 are doing me fine and should for few years I hope plus if you rate it Andy that's enough for me be confident in mine
I have an elixir 2 after researching for over 18month I could only afford 1 tent didn't want a really cheap one after all the hours I put in it came out top for me 👍
Sierra Designs has a tent called the meteor 2p / 3p which seems very similar and a fair bit cheaper , it's a brilliant tent and also in around 2kgs
That’s always looked like a great buy to me too. I really rate Sierra Designs gear.
The Sierra meteor tents don't use DAC poles anymore! The quality of the tent has gone downhill
@@mrmods7912 that's a shame mines had the dac poles , was a cracking tent
This is interesting. I’m new to camping ⛺️ ❤️❤️
Never liked the poles and it is also quite heavy. Kept the groundsheet and sold it getting a Hubba Hubba instead when it was sold around 240 £. Since both tents have same mensurements the groundsheet fits perfectly with Hubba Hubba as well. Then for other seasons than late Spring, Summer and early Autumn I instead use the Helm Compact 2.
Do I need this tent ..no ..do I want it ..yes..cheers Andy good review as always
Had this tent myself and it is great, but ultimately sold it and bought the Hubba hubba for its weight savings.
