But you explained very well all the facilities and the small cons of both of them, which was well appreciated. This is the best review you’ve done, thanks. Regards, Chris.
Do not buy these tents for backpacking. They are completely overbuilt and heavy. They have a specific use case. They have solid interiors to begin with. They are unusually hot in the summer months.
Great comparative review Andy. As you say, tent choice will ALWAYS be personal, to suit your build and where, when and how you intend to use the tent. I currently use a Pioneer 2, because it suits where and when I camp and how I transport it (mainly 3-season touring in a microlight aircraft). Great review Andy, I think you called it right, the Hilli is for the winter extremities, the Nortent gives you the benefit of having enough room for your gear, with a better vestibule free of clutter for cooking, with the ventilation to go beyond 2 seasons. I think the 200gm is negligible, it’s a case of picking the right tent for your endeavours. Would be good for future tent reviews to show them in compression sacks to give a better idea on how it will pack, as I try and stay within 50 litres.

Bought new vern 1 based on your initial assessment & have no doubts it’s the best tent I’ve ever owned- looking forward to pushing its limits in the next 2 years
Good review. I think the Hilli will be better with snow loading, but, I think both will cope with extreme winter weather. There's almost always some protection from the wind. The Vern 1 has a bigger footprint than my TN Pioneer 2 (never a 2 person tent), although less interior space. I like having good interior space, but with a small footprint. I think for the price, there's no better tent than the Vern 1. As good as the Soulo is, it's too small for me. I'll stick with mine though. It's not as strong but used every week, no matter what the weather. I just choose a location to suit.
Nice one Andy. I nearly pulled the trigger on the soulo a few times but just couldnt justify the price. The Vern 1 looks like a winner. Great review. Cheers mate.
It really is a no brainier between the two. You can buy 2 if one breaks get the spare out for the same money. Personally I will stick with my vango 2 Cairngorm. Great review 👍
It’s hard to justify the price difference. I know many will say Hilleberg’s aren’t made in China, but they’re not made in Sweden either! Both have made efforts to reduce their manufacturing costs.
What sort of logic is that? Forgive me but no, I am not packing an extra tent with me just incase the inferior tent I pitched fails. A wise consumer will buy once, cry once.
This is an excellent review. I have been thinking about using the Allak 2 for a solo trip, because I did not want to invest on the Soulo or Unna. I think I will now go with the Vern and go back to the Allak 2 for future two-person trips!
Nice to see a video of both of these tents side by side, the Nortent seems to be all the rage over social media at the moment. The Soulo’s do have a vent under the canopy for ventilation, I’v always opened that and never really experienced any condensation issues. The Nortent looks a quality piece of kit I must admit, but I’d prefer a sand Hilleberg Soulo. 😁 Nice video Andy mate enjoyed watching.
@@BackpackingUK I'd argue much lighter weight makes the Compact AS better for backpacking any if the weather looks like it could be windy, you can double up on the main pole.
Trouble is I’m getting my tent on the 26th , the Nortent isn’t available yet, the Hill tent is too expensive. I think the Terra nova southern cross 2 is better, however why can’t Terra nova make a southern cross 1.5? A southern cross 2 but with one vestibule and door? I feel like cross 1 too small and 2 too big?
I hate those kind of comparaison between 2 good tents wich make's me wants to buy both 😂 . Best review I've seen yet on TH-cam comparing the Soulo versus the new Vern 1. Subbing to your channel
Me personally i wouldn’t buy either reason because i prefer a bit of luxury on campsites but if push came to shove ,I’d go for the Vern over the Hilleberg because of the outrageous price
Well done on a great comparison review Andy. I see the vern 1 doing the rounds on YT & FB. Enough information for viewers to make an informed decision. Not my kind of tents either but if I had to it would be the hillieberg for me as its established and a couple of videos I watched the vern 1 holds snow on the roof which is what I would be using them for if i had one. I also read that the vern 1 comes direct from China? Is that correct in your experience?
Got the Vern 1 2024. Just hoping it’s going to see me through the whole of the year and not just winter, as buying a second (pole) tent this year is not an option. Really pleased I got it though.
The head shaker video 😂😂😂 Brilliant video Andy , I love the look of the nortent but the only thing that lets it down is the shape of the inner door , As you said they both have there lovers and haters
Great review! I recently picked up a Nordisk Telemark 2.2 PU brand new for under £300 with the groundsheet. I’d be interested to know your opinion of the PU model!
Just want to say , i cannot wait for my vern 1 to arrive. Polegate stuff that ! Tent looks fantastic. Cant afford a Hilly so what ! This tent ticks all the boxes for me. Thanks for the brilliant review. Hilleberg snobs can do one for me !
Be well aware of its limitations. These Nortents aren’t holding up in conditions where Hillebergs thrive. This video is out of date. Look for ones posted by Fellmandave and Rowanwildcamps who tested the Vern’s in real world conditions and found them wanting. Any test done on a village green claiming the Suolo is last years isn,t worth squat.
Great to see a side by side review, you forgot to mention the Soulo roof vent leaks both at the end point of the zip and eventually through the black triangular fabric in heavy wind blown rain, plenty of reports on TH-cam plus my experience. Love the Soulo but it's a years old design which should have been updated by now, the Vern is I think what the Soulo should be now.
This must be your modern entertainment device consumer mentality but we dont "update" outdoor equipment like electronics every year or two, mostly because a reputable designer designs a product properly the first time and sticks with a proper design because it works. The "new and improved" is a gimmick almost everytime. I expect to see the "old" Hilleberg designs to still be around long after the other tents are decomposing in the dump.
Have the soulo for about 10 years. Use it in all conditions. We will see, how the vern will do in the long run. And why fixing something, that's not broken? Allways developing and making things "better" is one of our greatest problems.
Thanks a lot for the video😊 Do you think that it would be better to save for one of those tents instead of buying Helm 1 and then upgrading in one or two years? Many thanks.
What about the Terra Nova Laser Compact AS...???? Would you say it compares to the tents in the review - I like it due to the low profile and the lack of wind resistance.
Got to admit both these tents are great and an choice may not be so simple as one over the other but more likely which applications do you intend for the Tent..The Hilliberg would tuck into an small space and may be warmer in the cold but the Vern is much more roomier and undoubtedly comfortable in warmer weather..I tend to camp on the coastline where space is limited and the weather predictably better since its an summer pursuit so the Vern would suit that but the Hilliberg is much lighter and may prove useful with strong sea breezes..Its an hard choice for me but if i had the money I'd buy both and choose Tents over the weather and geography Vern for the beach and Hilliberg for the hills moor or heath...
Andy, Excellent video agree more space and better ventilation together is a winning combination for UK conditions One question is it necessary to seam seal the Vern1?
I'd love you to do something similar between the Soulo and the TN Southern Cross 1. If I were to replace my Soulo, it's the Southern Cross which would tempt me. 75% of the weight for 90% of the capability.
Like you say give it time to see how the Vern copes.niw if I was to choose any of them it would be the Vern purely because of the internal space I've always been put off with the soulo because of that all my tents are 1.5p or 2p the extra weight for me is worth it.niw having said that I still wouldn't use the Vern in summer because there's lighter options better suited to warmer conditions.
Brilliant comparison Andy. Do you know Andy what the narrowest internal width is at either end of the nortent please. You mentioned the solou at each end and the widest measurement in both but I didn’t notice you mentioning the vent 1. If you have the size It would be a huge help. Thank you
I think it’s 60cm, but because it’s 240cm long, it’s unlikely your pad would ever be at a far end. I think if a long pad is centred, it’s about 70cm each width end.
@@BackpackingUK brilliant my exped LW is 1970 x 650 so it sounds like that will drop into place with no issues then. I’ve the vern 2 due this week but I wanted to confirm the above before ordering the Vern 1 too. Didn’t want to make an expensive mistake. Brilliant info Andy thank you 👍
Hi Buddy, Great review as usual, what pegs do you use or recommend. There appears to be many different versions so would like some advice on this please?
V or Y pegs are my preferred choice. V for harder ground and Y for softer ground. Short pegs are better for summer use and longer pegs are better for wet or soft ground (especially if it’s windy!). As for brands, MSR pegs are strong and light and readily available. There are plenty of cheaper copies too on Amazon!
So based on your expert opinion I have been looking at the MSR GROUNDHOG TENT Y. Would this be a great all round peg to buy do you think? Or is there a better one in their range?
I have been using Soulo since 2008 for kayaking trips, and love it. However, to me, over 2 kg is too much for backpacking. I prefer a lighter tent for backpacking.
OK, I'm probably being over-sensitive as many are. I'm fairly sure Nortent simply uses the same but longer 9mm poles in the Vern 2 which is a surprise to me as it's a much bigger tent with larger spans. I'm not overly surprised it failed.
Yes, but the Soulo still has only one vent at the top of the door and the mesh liner option provides no weight saving. It’s costly too (if you can ever get hold of one!).
Interesting ~ though ease and method of putting up the tents would have been useful as part of comparing one tent with the other. For example, one always wants to erect a tent quickly and efficiently during inclement weather conditions. Would these tents fit that?
I’ve got separate reviews showing pitching of these tents. It’s really easy, peg out the tent corners first, insert poles in the short sleeves, clip up the fly and lastly guy it out. So quick and easy plus you can pitch with gloves on too!
nice this nortent , only 2 tent in my life ! hillenberg allak 2 and hillenberg nammatj 2 gt! the nammatj 2 is legendary brutal rock solid exremly robust double pole bombproof fortress , it laugh at the brutal wind here in iceland !
To be fair to them, that’s what their channel is about. Reviewing tents. It costs thousands to run a gear review channel and you need a quick turnover of products. I do the same no matter the Brand, even Hillebergs. I’d love to keep them all but I simply don’t have the money.
typing half way through, but for me the Vern 1 is the winner for me and presume you will also say this at the end. A bit more thought has been put into it.
The SC2 v2023 is 2.4kgs. I've got that. In honesty just on the poles design wont as solid as the Vern 1, and has the hub weakness, got to make sure its well seated. Having said that, people have sailed pretty bad conditions with it. And of course, will have more room inside.
I think it’s important to factor in pitching in a storm .. I’d absolutely buy another lone rider adv tent .. to me it is the pinnacle of modern 2kg tents
Awesome review Andy 😊👍 I'm considering the Nortent Vern 1 as my first solo tent, when I'm not out with my kids hiking. 😅🏕️ Some days you just need to get out by yourself, charge your energy. ✨ I really like the interior space as you pointed out. Maybe it's a bit heavy for longer walks, but I usally don't walk miles and miles, just happy to get out in the nature to some beautiful spots and set camp 🌲😁
Thank you for the review Andy. Please stop doing them though as now I want the Nortent. I am not doing anything like four season camping yet though so I can’t justify it. Now, when I retire and have more time… (Don’t stop really)
I mean saying either of these is the 'best' is subjective maybe for proper 4 season conditions but definitely no need in summer for example, the Soulo i think is well overpriced i did own one but found it far too small so got the Allak instead which i only take out is severe wind/snow, my latest tent is the Niak which even as a yellow label Hilleberg will probably out perform most other companies 4 season tents, as for the Nortent well ive never owned one so i can't comment on that, but there's definitely no perfect all round tent, many factors to take into account weather, location ect ect
So which one do i buy? First time winter backpacking, well backpacking really amd i wamt a good tent but the hilleberg is an extra £350 so which do i buy?
I’d say it depends on your requirements. For instance, the Soulo is smaller inside with a smaller vestibule. However, the Soulo will probably outperform the Vern in storms. The Vern has much better ventilation and is much cheaper, especially with a footprint too.
@BackpackingUK thankyou. I'm gonna be doing West highland waybin October. Glencoe in December and then Skye in January. After your review I think the cheaper one should be okay cheers mate
Well if your basing your decision on cost, the hilleberg is much more expensive but if you ever came to sell it, you stand a very very good chance of getting almost all of your money back such is the reputation of Hilleberg tents. I suspect that once the Vern has proved itself over the next 12-18 months, and if it does turn out to be as good as the stats claim, then it will become very popular and prices will rise. In all fairness it is probably a bit too early to make any firm conclusions on the Vern as it's a relatively new tent that hasn't seen the sort of extreme usage from thousands of owners all over the globe like the soulo has. Only time will tell on the Vern, the soulo we already know. It is a hard choice at this moment in time. Both look great, for me the Vern looks more user friendly and versatile, but the soulo just oozes quality and pedigree, and it's robustness is beyond question.
I think Vern is superior design. If they matched the build quality of Hillleberg that would be amazing. I think the Soulo would probably be a bit easier to pitch.
Nortent, deffo. It’s a new, better design. I bet Hilliberg revise the Soulo soon, becuase of it. All the best Andy.👍🏾🇬🇧⛺️Edited, as apparently, it’s not as good as it’s made out to be. I’ll stick to my Robens Starlight.👍🏾😉⛺️
Hilleberg, I doubt will revise the Soulo. It's never changed since it was first introduced in 2007 apart from a Black label version. Why change something that is tried and tested over a long time.
@Soggz7785 No, of course I don't know for definite I just don't know why they would want to change a product that has proven itself over nearly two decades
For beginners, I’d say most tents are more like 3+ seasons. Tents like Wild Country Helm, MSR Elixir, Naturehike Cloud Peak 2 / Cloud Up 2, the OEX tents, etc, etc.
@@BackpackingUK thank you for your reply. I'm going on a long motorcycle trip from here to India. I've done motorcycle trips before but never camping. So I was looking for something sturdy for all types of weather. Not sure how many days I will camp.
Ridiculous to call any tent the "BEST" let alone best in the world! It totally depends on the circumstances in which you are going to use it. E.g. are either of these the BEST for lightweight backpacking in good weather conditions? It's an interesting comparison but rather a misleading title.

I would call a good backpacking tent to be sub 1.2 kilos with a small pack size. The Soulo weighs twice that. The Vern 2 is even heavier. I'm not carrying that. These are mountain tents, not backpacking tents.
Any recommendations for a 1 person backpacking tent please? I'm using a Lanshan 2 at the moment, I seriously need to get a better tent! Many thanks.....
@@julesnfriends A lot depends on budget, where you are backpacking, interior space and weight. The Lanshan isnt a bad tent. Would you go for another trekking pole tent or not? Is headroom important. I use a Vango F10 Helium 1 and an x-mid solid 2. The vango is heavier than the x-mid, has less headroom and only one porch. It is a tough tent. Similar designs are the Hilleberg akto, the Fjallraven abisko or the Nordisk Svalbard. Too hebx-midhas become my favourite tent. I've had it for a couple of years. @@BrokenBackMountains HUGE thanks for this comprehensive reply. I've had a brief look through, you certainly know your tents. The options look perfect for me. @@julesnfriendsThe Helium is very good and has shown great service in Scotland and Ireland in all weather. The x-mid solid is expensive when the customs fees are factored in. Good Job Andy, very fair.
Ventilation on the Soulo is provided by the detachable roof which directs airflow through the tent. There's also a vent in the outer door.

This was a GREAT review and comparison! If I were looking for a tent, you sold me on the Nortent!
Bought new vern 1 based on your initial assessment & have no doubts it’s the best tent I’ve ever owned- looking forward to pushing its limits in the next 2 years
You won’t regret it 👍
How about the vern 1 v scarp tarptent ? Similar price range and both are supposed to be Hilleberg challengers ??
Good review. I think the Hilli will be better with snow loading, but, I think both will cope with extreme winter weather. There's almost always some protection from the wind. The Vern 1 has a bigger footprint than my TN Pioneer 2 (never a 2 person tent), although less interior space. I like having good interior space, but with a small footprint. I think for the price, there's no better tent than the Vern 1. As good as the Soulo is, it's too small for me. I'll stick with mine though. It's not as strong but used every week, no matter what the weather. I just choose a location to suit.
Outstanding review ,Andy 👏 👌 👍
Best review so far Andy, in my opinion 👌
Thanks 🙏

its no doubt about that !!!!
He needs to learn how to say words ending in t. Norten...
Nice one Andy. I nearly pulled the trigger on the soulo a few times but just couldnt justify the price. The Vern 1 looks like a winner. Great review. Cheers mate.
Great review. I wonder the warranty. How Nortent will sort problems. Heard hilleberg is pretty good.
@@BackpackingUKtheir own factory in Europe (Estonia) must be a chunk of the cost vs China
What sort of logic is that? Forgive me but no, I am not packing an extra tent with me just incase the inferior tent I pitched fails. A wise consumer will buy once, cry once.
Love your reviews bud, another pro comparison. Keep up the great work!😉👍🏆
This is an excellent review.
Nice video Andy mate enjoyed watching.
The glow in the dark zip tabs did it for me 👌. I love my vern 1 . Hopefully do me for years to come . Thanks for the review 👍
What happened to the Terra compact AS , not that long ago it was great you said !
It is, they are totally different tents though. You can’t compare a single-pole tent to a three-pole tent that weighs about a kilo more.
@@BackpackingUK I'd argue much lighter weight makes the Compact AS better for backpacking any if the weather looks like it could be windy, you can double up on the main pole.
Thanks Andy, great video. If I was in the market for yet another tent, I’d go Nortent
Great balanced review of both tents 👍
Ill stick with my Vango banshee thanks lol. Tried and tested and a fraction of the price.
I hate those kind of comparaison between 2 good tents wich make's me wants to buy both 😂 . Best review I've seen yet on TH-cam comparing the Soulo versus the new Vern 1. Subbing to your channel
Cheers 👍
Me personally i wouldn’t buy either reason because i prefer a bit of luxury on campsites but if push came to shove ,I’d go for the Vern over the Hilleberg because of the outrageous price
My Vern 1 is here. Sadly, I've got to wait a couple of weeks before I'm able to use it. I'm far from patient!
Great comparison video. Thanks.
The best choise of these 2 seems to be Hilleberg Unna.
Great review that Andy, minds made totally clear now thanks pal 👊👍🥃
Exciting times! 🤗
Can’t afford either but my choice would be the Nortent. Would love one of these.😢
Well done on a great comparison review Andy.
Yes, the Nortent is made in China. I Googled where it came from and it looks like a decent set up out there. No sign of balls and chains 😂
Got the Vern 1 2024. Just hoping it’s going to see me through the whole of the year and not just winter, as buying a second (pole) tent this year is not an option. Really pleased I got it though.
The head shaker video 😂😂😂
Brilliant video Andy , I love the look of the nortent but the only thing that lets it down is the shape of the inner door ,
As you said they both have there lovers and haters
In my opinion Nortent Vern 1 is the winner in many ways. I`m waiting delivery for my dream tent Vern 1 PC it`s fantastic tent really is.
Great review Andy, definitely time to move my Hilleberg Akto on and replace it with the Vern 1.
I should have said, one of the best things about Hilleberg’s is their re-sale value. Your Akto will still be worth a substantial amount of money.
In summer I let the vestibuel of the soulo just open. So no problem with condensation.
Great review! I recently picked up a Nordisk Telemark 2.2 PU brand new for under £300 with the groundsheet. I’d be interested to know your opinion of the PU model!
Excellent honest review Andy, not in the market yet for a new tent but the Vern 1 looks a fine all-rounder.❤
It's a no brainer, nearly half the cost and able to use it more often. If I could only have one it'd be the Nortent
Thanks a lot for the video😊
Do you think that it would be better to save for one of those tents instead of buying Helm 1 and then upgrading in one or two years?
Andy, Excellent video agree more space and better ventilation together is a winning combination for UK conditions
One question is it necessary to seam seal the Vern1?
I’m not intending to seam seal it. I believe they do flat lock stitching like Hilleberg.
I'd love you to do something similar between the Soulo and the TN Southern Cross 1. If I were to replace my Soulo, it's the Southern Cross which would tempt me. 75% of the weight for 90% of the capability.
Unless you’re small, you wouldn’t like it. I’m 5’8” and it feels a bit small for even me.
Nortent for the win 🎉
Can I say the Nortent inner tent is not well venti for summer season?
It is well vented for a 4 season tent. I’m not sure what more you want?
Great comparison Andy 👍🏻
Cheers 👍
Brilliant info Andy thank you 👍
Great review Andy
Thanks 👍
Hi Buddy,
Great review as usual, what pegs do you use or recommend.
Congratulations mate.
Durham, which is defo longer than 2hrs..lol
And I have my own chair!!
I have been using Soulo since 2008 for kayaking trips, and love it. However, to me, over 2 kg is too much for backpacking. I prefer a lighter tent for backpacking.
Im NOT associating you with the VERN 2! Im explaining that the VERN 2 has also had bent and snapped poles, just like the VERN 1.
OK, I'm probably being over-sensitive as many are. I'm fairly sure Nortent simply uses the same but longer 9mm poles in the Vern 2 which is a surprise to me as it's a much bigger tent with larger spans. I'm not overly surprised it failed.
These companies need to provide summer inners as an option to buy which I believe Hilleberg does…
New Brunswick Canada 🇨🇦
I've noticed that most of the TH-cam influencers are raffling off or selling the Nortent tents they were given and raving about.
Great reviews. Thanks
How about Vern1 versus Southern Cross 2 both about the same weight 2.6kg?
The SC2 v2023 is 2.4kgs. I've got that. In honesty just on the poles design wont as solid as the Vern 1, and has the hub weakness, got to make sure its well seated. Having said that, people have sailed pretty bad conditions with it.
And of course, will have more room inside.
Fits long wide sleeping pad just fine, no problem. 12:00
I think it’s important to factor in pitching in a storm .. I’d absolutely buy another lone rider adv tent .. to me it is the pinnacle of modern 2kg tents
The only thing I think would better is the Hilliberg in the snow. The Nortent will gather snow around the crossed poles.
Bit late to the party. But I’ve got my popcorn ready. 😁
😂😂😂
You said the Soulo has no vent, which is incorrect. What do you think is under that top cover?
It’s not what I’d call a proper vent. It doesn’t assist fresh air into the tent, only out, and with no flow, it’s of limited use.
Another cracking video Andy, great comparison between these two stellar tents.
@@steviet3725 And you know that for definite?
@Soggz7785 No, of course I don't know for definite
I just don't know why they would want to change a product that has proven itself over nearly two decades
@@sukiline 🤣🤣🤣
Great comprehensive review. Well done.
Nortent wins it for me. More space, cheaper & if I wanted to have a sleepless night being out in silly high winds I’d just double pole!
So what is the best four season tent for a beginner that can be used in the summer as well?

Out of interest, why did you click on it if you believe there’s no best tent in the world? I’d have simply scrolled on. Serious question.

You're thoughts?
Lots of headroom, 2 porches and light for a two person. Trekking pole tent but you can buy poles for it. It is a Marmite tent. A lot of people hate it but a lot haven't used it or have only had it for a few camps.
@@BrokenBackMountains HUGE thanks for this comprehensive reply. I've had a brief look through, you certainly know your tents. The options look perfect for me. Durston X- mid Solid looks like a well built Lanshan, your Vango Helium looks ideal, the two you have seem to cover all bases.
I'm camping mostly in Scotland and Scottish Highlands, spring and autumn. Lanshan didn't feel good there 3 weeks ago.
I'll read through these options more carefully - many thanks!
@@julesnfriendsThe Helium is very good and has shown great service in Scotland and Ireland in all weather.
The x-mid solid is expensive when the customs fees are factored in.
Put it this way, I wouldn't sell either tent and am considering another x-mid solid but 1 person to cut weight even more.
If you can, try to see both tents in the real world to see if they suit. There should be a helium set up in an outdoor shop somewhere.
