These were among the first species I kept when I started keeping tropical fishes back in 1972. I had just moved to London to start my new job as a junior lab technician in a small college at the university, and managed to get a bedsit across the road from college. A colleague gifted me a small acrylic tank and I stocked it with zebras and medakas. They did very well in hard London tap water although I never got any fry - they always got to the eggs before I did. I would add one observation on distinguishing the sexes, and that is I found that the males' stripes were gold, whereas the females' stripes were silver (at least, they were back in those days).
@@Steves_fish Yes, they do. But only when they are mature and well fed. Often, in dealer's tanks they are not, that's why you are always recommended to buy a group to ensure you get both sexes. Besides, they move so fast that this distinction goes unnoticed, it's more noticeable in wild specimens.
Aww, I had a small school of these in a 12 gallon setup many years ago. Enjoyed them very much. I did see the occasional odd fry or two, but they never made it to adulthood
Well, you've convinced me. I'm getting a little school of zebras. Thank you for the beautiful and informative videos--easily my favorite species profiles I've seen!
I'm new to aquariums, I bought a 100×40×40 tank with the intention of keeping cold water fish, primarily white cloud mountain minnows, I saw another video suggesting zebra danios would be comfortable with white clouds then I found your channel and this video which cemented my desire, my five zebra and white clouds have been really enjoying their 160 litre home for three days now and it's a joy to watch them explore the rock caves and swim hard up stream and glide back down stream, thanks for the information, very helpful. 👍❤️🇬🇧
I just started myself with zebra & leopard Danios in a 75 gal & they are doing great just wondering what type filter system to use to keep them happy & safe right now I have a small pump in it to keep the water moving & filtered till I get what I need which I'm thinking of a diy air filter setup that I can do easily & cheap.
@@raisinggoldfishonabudget7058 I'm using an internal filter of 1200 litres an hour in a 160 litre tank, this is creating a powerful flow of water which the minnows and danios seem to really enjoy. 👍
@@Steves_fish yeah I've noticed how fast the danio hoover the food, I use tetra multi colour crisp food, I sprinkle whole crisps into the tank, the danio go for those and take a while to eat them, at the same time I sprinkle crushed crisps into the tank, the minnows then have time to hoover up the smaller bits of food. Seems to be working well so far. 👍
just got 10 of them last week, they are doing really good .. i love my Zebra Danios, they are always active and swimming around really fast .. really fun too look at.
very nice specimen u have there... i have seen them in wild. Absolutely marvelous . They r often found with esmos danricus. Very nice video. thanks for sharing.
I absolutely Love this video!! Great job!! One of My most favored and beloved Fish!! 🥰💙💚 I had a few in a 20 gallon, and the Zebra Danio was One of my Greatest Freshwater Aquarium Fish memories to this day!! (Tied with my Kribensis Cichlid, Blue Ram Cichlid, Cherry Barb, Corydoras' and Harlequin Rasbora!! 🤎)
I recently got a shoal of 6 for my outdoor mini pond. At first they were quite shy, but after a few weeks they became much more outgoing and will swarm at the surface whenever I approach! I also have a shoal of pearl (Albolineatus) danios, who are just as fun and energetic. Danios in general are too underrated in the hobby, its good to see them getting some more recognition. I'm currently trying to get my hands on some gold ring danios, but nobody seems to carry them. Do you have any other danios you plan on making videos about?
I did not have a choice to pick mine. I am here learning about them now because I have babies that hatched from the carpet plant I bought from the store. 😅 luckily the plant was in a quarantine bucket so now I am trying to take care of them.
I have watched several videos and it seems there is a "rule" keeping a school of 5-8 danios in a 20 gallon tank. So Idk, maybe you can keep 4-5 of them.
I plan on adding some to my 20 gallon long river aquarium. There will be medium flow, it will house a school of paleatus corydoras, zebra danios, and some white clouds. Due to their popularity and fecundity, they are usually pretty inbred. Unless more people advocate to outcross their breeding stock more often (and recommend to buy your breeding stock from different sellers or taking advantage of wild fish, quarantining them), the genetic health of aquarium fish will continue to degrade until they become more “sensitive”. But to end my comment on a good note, they are basically tiny stripped trout or salmon that anyone could keep in an aquarium. What is there not to love?
@@Steves_fish I guess a 4 ft 75 gal aquarium for 24 danios will do the trick ? I also have jungle Val & amazon swords & java ferns along with water Wisteria.
So nice to see the original variety of zebras. The color zebra and color tetra are the worst thing that has ever happened to the hobby. I spent 3 years searching for these and finally managed to find them a few days ago. All that is being sold now are color zebras. ;(
I have a 2.5 gallon tank made for a corner so it’s a big triangle and I have two zebra fish and one guppie I was wondering if I should get a bigger tank it’s pretty tall but has a good amount of space from wall to wall. If 2.5 gallons is suitable I was wondering if I should get another one so it’s not just the same two bugging each other if anyone has any tips let me know
An absolute 5 individuals in a 30 litre would be the fine as well.. they would survive despite the tank size. Similarly in the wild, they often migrate around the rivers to small pools or lakes even thru big forest puddles. Oxygen plays the important role here.
the original zebrafish (without the floppy fins) are quite beautiful, and i prefer them to neon tetras. why people look this gift horse in the mouth is simply because of the low price status. if they were impossible to breed, $40/fish, they would be on everyone's wish list...

great video had them in my 1st ever tank
I love danios. My favorite are celestial pearls, but zebras are so hardy and beautiful!
I surprised she has shrimp in there I had a orange bee shrimp and they’ll chase it one day I saw it disappear dunno if they ate it! 😢
Thank you for sharing this video 👍😀

The faithful zebra danio !
I have ones that were crossbred with glofish danios, they have bright red stripes and crimson backs.
Glo fish are actually the same species, they’re zebra danios chemically treated with the glo chemicals and then bred on. Very cool!
Great stuff, Lauren. Your vids are always so beautifully done and full of great info. Thank you.
I love these tiny ADHD babies
awesome video. they are pretty cool
How many can I have in a 10 gallon tank?
I have watched several videos and it seems there is a "rule" keeping a school of 5-8 danios in a 20 gallon tank. So Idk, maybe you can keep 4-5 of them.
Are glow danios are naturally nipping fins of other tank mates or in specific conditions they nip?
Can you mix zebras and tetras?
Can I put them with black mollys ?
best schooling fish ever!!!
Great video.
It's hard to find these fish without color modification.
Awesome video!
😊 I have some Zebra & Leopard Danios as friends.
I love my zebras. In a 20 gal long. Very active
