    Can we all agree that "oh just ignore him" is the worst advice ever for dealing with bullies?

    • @ShadyDoorags
      @ShadyDoorags  ปีที่แล้ว +1407

      Every person is different. Some bullies are indeed just looking for any kind of response and ignoring them could be a potential solution, but that is not going to work for everyone and even if it did, some bullies won't leave you alone without a heavy cost.

    • @BlueAngel7
      @BlueAngel7 ปีที่แล้ว +412

      Ignoring the bully doesn't always make them stop, if anything they see it as a challenge. Keep pushing buttons until the victims snap; they want a reaction and won't stop until they get one

    • @floricel_112
      @floricel_112 ปีที่แล้ว +246

      100%. I was bullied by the majority of my class and ignoring the problem didn't do jack except exacerbate it. In contrast, one time two other kids wanted to start bullying me, even dared me and gave me permission to hit them, so I either punched one of them or slammed him against the wall. Deadass we became amicable after that.

    The difficulty in taxidermy is specifically in making the animals look like they are alive. It's incredibly easy to make the animal look unnatrual and uncanny when stuffing it - you're just working with it's skin and have to construct a skeleton for it. So something the size of that bear, making it look so lifelike... Yeah, that's really impressive.

    • @kenupton4084
      @kenupton4084 ปีที่แล้ว +66

      I'm glad I found a proper response. I'm not at all knowledged or skilled in taxidermy but I've tried my hand at sculpture. I imagine the framework is similar but with a far more difficult and unforgiving medium.
      To make an animal's body in such a way as to surprise someone should they come around a corner and see it, is really impressive. I've seen displays in museums that are laughably silly and others lifelike they seem frozen in time.
      There truly is a deeper art to the whole thing.

    • @austinschwartz7424
      @austinschwartz7424 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      The question I have is why don't they just do different categories, sure a bear is way more impressive than a squirrel but the size difference probably makes the process and techniques entirely different. Kinda like how the Olympics have a 50-meter dahs and a 100-meter dash?

    I'm a school bus driver and my bus is full of Calebs. And of course, the parents do nothing when informed of their child's misbehavior, then they get mad when their child is permanently removed from the bus. My "Calebs" hate how strict I am with the rules, and have tried all year to get me to give up. I just stood up from my seat and walked to the front. She stopped the bus and told me to sit down then threatened to kick both me and her off because I moved her to my seat since she was balling her eyes out from how the driver spoke to her. Nothing more, nothing less.

Now, I am 6'1, 240 lb of muscle and an MMA enthusiast with a blackbelt in JKD AND in Kali, a martial art mostly used by police and military around the world as it deals mostly with weapons. You cannot walk 5 feet in my house without having a weapon within arms reach. Someone doxxing my address to begin with wasn't going to scare me; I live for the event of a home invasion scenario. But he didn't even get the right IP or right address, so I am not treating this seriously. I tell the other team about how the guy tried and failed to dox me, treating it with a bit of absurdist humor, and that's when the guy explains that he deliberately MADE UP a random address just to mess with me.

His rationality was that it "Got me talking" and now he was "Living in my head rent free", but it's like, I wasn't even annoyed. I beat the hell out of her after Months of being physically assaulted and belittled. The school tried to get me in trouble but my mom had been documenting Every time she went to the school to stop this girl. So if I was going to be in trouble for beating up a girl who had physically assaulted me multiple times and tried to Stomp on my little Sister's Head then that little witch was Definitely going down with me. The school dropped it once they realized they would be at fault for not stopping the bullying sooner.
      She never bothered me or my little sister again after that. And I gained a reputation for not taking things lying down. My kindness and patience had a boundary and she waltzed right over that line into fuck around and find out territory.

      When I tried that as a kid my bully came back with 3 of his friends. Jumped me to the point I needed to go to the hospital. No charges were pressed because I "started it," even though I was defending myself. 4 kids, 2 parents, and a principle all against me made it impossible for us to press charges. The bullying kept on and I couldn't do anything about it. If I laid one finger on him I was expelled.

      It’s not that adults are easier to bully, it’s that if they do anything about it beyond informing the kid’s parents, they’re gonna get in hot water with the law (like when Hank took Caleb’s bike), and most parents don’t take adults who say they’ve been bullied by their kids seriously.
      When I was in fifth grade, there was this kindergartener who liked to hit me for kicks, and there was nothing I could do make him stop except tell the teachers who of course did nothing about it, thereby enabling the kid to go on punching me. And despite his size, his punches actually hurt after he hit the exact same place over and over again. One day I got so fed up with him that I grabbed him by his arm, hoisted him up off the ground and told him that if he didn’t stop it, I’d thrash him. He immediately told the teacher and I got sent to the principals office. I was told to take back what I said. I told the principal that I meant what I said and that I wasn’t going to take it back. I got a detention but the kid never hit me again, so it was worth it.

    For taxidermy, generally the value is derived from "Lifelike" recreation, not being mangled, having realistic and appropriate proportions, looking like it's still living. You can find a lot of mangled taxidermy projects.
    It's then posing, and setting a scene.
    The bear is just big, as you pointed out, and that does have some more room for mangling, but generally it's not particularly special, beyond being a bear and that's not an easy thing to bag.
    As far as what the show is trying to convey it's just "The competition is bigger than life" and it's not just a local craft show, but as far as actual like, taxidermy contests, it's not doing anything that'd win the competition. If you check out contest winners, it's always paired with great setting and depictions, and it ranges from big to small, the presentation is way more than just "It's big".
    You're trying to capture a moment in life, action, environment, etc. It's not just a simple trophy.

      I feel like there's an element here that isn't discussed; We can't properly judge the bear statue due to the limitations of the medium which it's depicted in.
      Sure, people who don't understand the craft might look at it as a winner and think, "Ah yes, bigger is better!" and that seems to be what the show is going for.
      That said, if the bear shows exquisite craftsmanship upon close inspection, that could Potentially have earned it high marks. The point of art is, after all, to evoke emotion. If the emotion the artist was going for was the fear and awe that comes about from a realistic depiction of a bear that's about to attack a person, then if properly represented by a very life-like piece I could understand something like that taking first place.

      The fact that Caleb can take a while to answer also lead me to believe that. A school for "gifted children" could easily mean a school for mentally and learning disabled. As someone who attended one of those schools, I saw kids who could get away with whatever they wanted because their parents were rich enough to send them there while I was on a scholarship program.
      Again, this is just my interpretation.

Some parents fear disciplining their children, mainly due to a desire to avoid looking "abusive", or because they still see their child as their "sweet baby". You can tell this is the case at that last moment when they hesitate when Caleb refuses to get off Hank's lawn, they clearly knew Caleb was in the wrong at that moment.

Then when Caleb persisted, he set firm boundaries and told him to stop that behavior, and why. When Caleb still didn't stop, he confronted his parents firmly but respectfully. His parents couldn't be reasoned with and that that point instead of just taking Caleb's bike away from him, trying to parent a child that isn't his, he should have took his bike away, took it over to Caleb's house, telling the parents directly, your child is not allowed to ride this bike on my property anymore. There was this one episode called New Cowboy on the block where a former football player moved into the neighborhood and when Hank tried to get the police involved they didn't do anything about the issue even though the former football player committed a felony by starting a fire in the neighborhood ( which the cops had seen by the way).

      They were about to do something, but as soon as attention was drawn to the fact that it was a famous football player, they basically sided with him automatically because they liked famous people. Honestly, having bobby annoy the parents is a genius move. Hank can't make a move on the parents himself because he already got in trouble with the cops about this issue. However Bobby is a kid, the parents can't call the cops on a kid unless bobby actually does something illegal, now I could be argued that the poppers could be assault, and the trash can was an act of vandalism. However, making charges like those stick on a minor with no previous record is hard, and them charging bobby, would likely give Hank the okay to charge celib for trespassing and property damaged. The damage to his lawn could be proven if the tracks match with celb's bike tires. Not to mention getting bobby in trouble with the law would probably turn the neighborhood against them, lord knows they'd make an enemy out of peggy.

      That lesson always stuck with me. And I have a good personal example to illustrate my point.
      In 6th grade, I met this kid named Tysean in band class. We both played trombone, so we were seated right next to one another. Tysean had one of the shortest fuses of anyone I've ever seen. He was one of those kids who was constantly in trouble for starting fights, and he would start them over minor stuff. I couldn't avoid being around him at the time and he would talk to me a lot. I was afraid that if I was too blatant in keeping my distance, he'd use that as an excuse to make me his next target, so I tried my best to tread lightly with him around. I had a couple close calls, but I was able to diffuse the situation both times. I had one class with him after that, but I was able to put more distance between us, so he was no longer an issue for me. That being said, I still heard about the fights he started.
      After I graduated middle school, I never saw him again. I graduated middle school in 2011. I forgot about him until 2020, when I started a part time job to pass time during covid. One of my coworkers lived in the neighborhood I went to middle school in and was about the same age, so he asked me if we knew any of the same people. Tysean's name came up, and I mentioned that I did know him, but not well enough to keep in contact. My coworker was his friend at some point and was close with his family. He told me that about a year or 2 prior, Tysean was renting a room from this guy near him, they got into a heated argument, and he strangled his landlord to death. He's doing 20 years for homicide and knowing his temper, he's almost guaranteed to rack up additional charges inside prison. He even showed me the correctional record to prove it.

    Kids like Caleb are the main reason why I'm a bit stricter with my daughter than I'm really comfortable with.
    I'd love to be the fun dad and just let her have the run of the place, I mean she's 3 years old, but if I don't start her off early understanding good vs bad behavior then things are only going to get worse.
    When she acts out, throws a tantrum or misbehaves, I try to do what my parents did with me: she gets one warning, and if it happens again then there's a consequence.
    For example, if I say it's bedtime and she decides she's going to keep playing with her toy, she gets one chance to listen and go quietly to bed. And if she doesn't listen then that toy gets taken away for the night and she'll get it back the next morning IF she apologizes for misbehaving.

      There’s no such thing as too early to start disciplining, assuming they’re old enough to understand what’s happening.
      And there’s this misunderstanding that discipline always means spanking. It doesn’t. It could be something like: They throw a tantrum in a store (and another adult is with you), then they get nothing and take them to the car. They can’t play properly with a toy, it gets taken away. Stuff like that.

    17:45 I think Caleb listened because he didn't know how to react otherwise to his parents actually putting their foot down and actually raising their voice at him. Parent's anger alone is enough sometimes to get a child to listen. My dad was like that, he was sweet, funny, and friendly, someone you would love to be around. But when he got angry, he was scary. 😂 When I was around my dad he didn't even need to physically punish us for doing anything wrong, his anger alone would deter us from misbehaving further.

    Hi, I have five years of teaching experience. I would love to comment on the awesome, accurate stuff Shady said in his video. I have had many “Calebs” in my classroom. I have also interacted with many parents who were just like Jim and Lila. These kids are HUGE bullies in the classroom, in secret, shamelessly, publicly horrible and…when they become adults, usually, they are still bullies. Bullies grow up and raise bully-kids, unless they wake up and manage to change their ways. In school, your children have to put up with these “Calebs”, and it’s only gotten worse since we were young’uns. Caleb is the cause for most problems in public schools. Teachers can only do so much to keep that kind of kid under control while they’re doing their best to teach 30+ other students at the same time. If bully adults and bully kids seem to run your kid’s school…it’s time to change schools and get the “f” out of that situation. Thanks for reading ❤ Love your videos, Shady! Keep ‘em coming!

    The part of the animal used in taxidermy is the fur, and he would spend more time making the mold and hardening it and using a special glue to put the skin on it. He took weeks and even months to make amazing works and would even sleep in his workshop regularly.

    As someone who works in security, I have the displeasure of dealing with some pretty shitty adults from time to time. The types of adults who seem to lack any empathy or responsibility. I honestly believe that many of these adults probably act this way because they had parents like the ones seen in this episode who just let them get away with their bad behavior without any discipline whatsoever. With the way they act I can’t say that I believe they had good parents who taught them how to have personal responsibility or show empathy for others.
    Like, I’ve honestly never really understood why someone would go out of there way to intentionally antagonize someone else. I just never saw the appeal in intentionally ruining some else’s day. What makes it worse is when they even try to defend their shitty behavior. “No, it’s not MY fault that I’m intentionally being a nuisance to you for no reason whatsoever, it’s your fault for not sucking it up and dealing with it. Now stop acting like a hall monitor and let me get on your nerve with no consequences for my actions.”

Nine times out of ten the episodes whole point in that physical violence is the one true answer to an annoying/bratty kid. But Hank and Peggy are vehemently anti spanking and make it known in several episodes. It's why everyone was so rightfully disgusted with Peggy in "Paddlin' Peggy". Hank did the best thing he could and all the parents had to do was show proper authority instead of yanking him up and hitting him.
