Yo Tony, just wanted you to know in case you missed the news that the English translation of the PSP version of Eternal Punishment just released yesterday!
This probably wasn't the case when you were recording, but as of this upload the translation for Eternal Punishment on PSP is finished! The translation for SMT1 on PS1 is also finished if anyone is interested! Fingers crossed that Devil Summoner on PSP will be ready soon...
@@greatdane7252 the problem with DS is not the new music its jsut that PPSSPP doesnt emulate the reverb effects correctly making a lot of songs sound distorted
The devil summoner translation is being handled by the team that took almost a decade to work on the P2 EP translation only to be beaten by a team that worked on it for a year lol. We're more likely to see someone beat them to it than see it actually be released.
For me, I really think playing P4 for the first time during quarantine helped a lot. I had plenty of time to sink into it, and it was really nice being able to play a game about hanging out with friends during a time where I couldn’t hang out with friends.
P5 helped me socialize in 2019, because i was way too shy, and i was in a familiar situation to Joker(considering that i was in a new school and without any of my old friends, but not the rest of Joker's backstory thankfully) P4 made me just feel like i was actually Yu and those characters were all real P3 was extremely bittersweet, i played it during quarantine and for some reason the last month and talking with NPC's while the rumors of world's ending with the endgame overworld song made me go like "Man... This hits hard, fuck it, this game is a masterpiece" All of them are great games in many ways
i've been replaying Persona 4 Golden lately. i never get tired of experiencing Kanji or Naoki's social links. i actually only _just_ found out in a random night time conversation that Naoki and Kanji were childhood friends. how fitting.
Yeah, same. The characters especially in P2 duology is really amazing (the character growth part). Really made u stick to the game since the story is juz that great.
It is beyond me why Eternal Punishment isn’t noticed as much as it should be. Story wise I can understand why people can relate to Eikichi, Lisa and Maya more than Baofu, Ulala, and Katsuya, but I also first played IS when I was in high school. When I played eternal punishment as an adult, I connected with the cast more than IS could ever make me.
As a teenager right now who related more to the IS cast in terms of their issues, etc i wonder how relatable the EP cast will become for me once i become an adult
I feel like there is a huge misconception about p3’s party ai that came about from memes like Mitsuru’s Marin Karin but that is not the case if you use the tactics menu and analyze function it will not happen but most people just ignore it and then they blame the ai. This game has been balanced for command battle.
I fnished P3 FES and I only knew about Mitsuru's AI when I saw memes about it. I fully agree that if you use tactics correctly you'll never see this "dumb AI" issue.
Yeah, personally i never had Mitsuru spamming Marin Karin and i used to examinate a lot the enemies and use the commands The only AIs that made me go "FUCK YOU AI" were Junpei, Ken and Koromaru
Aren't some AI function only available later on in the story? Pretty dumb to hold back key features if their the essence of how your battle system works
It always feels nice to see P4 at the top I still remember first playing it around the time I figured out who i truly was, and around the time i moved from the city to a small countryside town The setting of p4 just spoke to me so much, easily making it my fave
I played it 2 years ago and I was at a very pivotal time in my life and I actually felt like I was living in Inaba and hanging out with the investigation team. Also it was the first smt/ persona game I played and since then I've played 8 or 10 of them and it is now my favorite game series - all because I played persona 4 at a certain time and it resonated with me so much. Its just a masterpiece of a game and I love it so much.
Don't agree with your P3 takes but respect your opinions, interesting list. I found things like Marin Karin and Yukari's healing to not be that much of an issue overall, and consider The Answer its own enjoyable experience that doesn't entirely ruin P3's ending like people make it out to. If anything my issues in FES and Portable more relate to certain deaths that can get undone in those games, which takes away from the game's theme and message, but are thankfully optional.
I actually enjoyed The Answer too, it isn't anywhere near as hard (remember, grindy =/= difficult), seeing all the SEES member cope with the protagonist's death differently was GREAT (Yukari's a bitch yes, but her action was understandable for a mentally damaged 17- year old) and was the story's highlight for me. I always love when there's a conflict within the game's main cast. Of course it also answered many questions I've been wondering since The Journey ended, and Metis being Aigis' Shadow was a really great plot too. Unfortunately, I hated the Answer's ending. I felt that Aigis should've lost her memory after she found the answer to life and death, like the protagonist did, but sadly, she somehow came back. IMO it was the exact opposite of the Journey's ending and her "death" was cheapened as a result.
I think anybody who complains about Marin Karin never learned that you can change your party members off of "act freely." It also will never happen if a boss nulls it and you have them analyzed. The party members are smart except they love to attack enemies that are already down. I think people who make complaints about only controlling one guy fundamentally do not understand the mechanics of the game.
In my personal opinion they all do something better than the others. P1 is what started it all P2 has my favorite story P3 has my favorite music (personally my favorite overall) P4 has my favorite characters P5 has my favorite gameplay and aesthetic.
for me, P1 is ofc the one that started them all P2 Idk, cuz i haven't finished the game and pretty boring to me P3 has my favorite story (including the answer) P4 has the best social links P5 has the best persona design, music/soundtrack, and aesthetic
The fact that Persona 4 is also my favourite Persona, nay, my favourite game of all time and this video comes out on my birthday is a twist of fate. Thank you.
You can definitely call them some of them bad, fairly certain most people praise 1 and 2 stories for they're stories but view the gameplay as boring / abysmal and even some that feel that way about P3.
@@MegaOverclocked Eternal Punishiment gameplay is decent at best P1 and IS gameplay are.... Unplayable, unless you play most of the game with fast foward on emulators
Yeah no, Persona 3 is awful. Mediocre story, shit pacing, bad dungeon crawling, stupid gameplay, strega is shit, ikutski twist was dogshit, they recruited a fucking dog, stupid perverted jokes. Persona is very very bad, I'm amazed at the atlus Fandom copium for that bad game.
@@MegaOverclocked fair enough, but they still aren't "bad". They may have tedious aspects but it's hard to say they straight up horrible. Even P1 and 2 have many redeeming aspects (like the story as you mentioned) which ultimately keeps the game from being "bad" no matter what.
I love the psp kama palace theme you use in the p1 segment, but I remember using it for my "manga that ruined my childhood" video and somebody wrote a long mean comment telling me to never use the psp version and it was disgusting and they were leaving a dislike on the video for it. ahhh, good times.
People get REALLY weird about, well everything regarding Persona 1 . Oh well, I still enjoyed my time even if I dread talking about it with most people. Kama Palace was better in the PSP version though
I like this list for the most part. P5 vs P4 is tough for me. I prefer the story and characters of 4 by quite a bit, but gameplay and dungeons of P5 are way more fun imo. Hopefully P6 has a more fleshed out story while continuing to advance the gameplay.
Would be awesome if the P2 duology ever gets a proper remake with an overhaul to the battle system. You said it perfectly that it was always a race to the next story beat and winning battles was never a satisfying feeling.
3, 4 and 5 are all fantastic in their own ways. So much so that it’s hard to choose between them for best. Something about the atmosphere of 3 did it for me, 4 has the best characters and 5 the best gameplay, but none of them are slouches in any of those categories. I still remember beating the final boss of 5 after using all my party members, all my items, and down to just Joker who himself was one shot away from dying. I know it was probably coincidence how things aligned like that, but made for an amazingly climactic finale!
I wonder if all the people putting P5 low on their list is because they just hate how popular it is. Of course some people have valid reasons… but I know how popular it is to be a contrarian as of late. P5 is by no means a perfect game, but to say it’s the worse… seems like a stretch. But hey to each their own.
i think the reason they compliment each other so well is because atlus was on a duology streak at the time: DDS, Raidou, Persona 3&4, and even going a little bit into the NintendoDS era too with Devil Survivor.
P4 feels like a natural reaction to Makoto's sacrifice at the end of P3. In a sense, the desire for death no longer consumes the world, but all that's left is the truth and whether or not people will accept that truth.
@@tryinglyon truth is mostly a myth. In reality you can't find the truth. That's why even in Persona 4 in true ending, characters or game doesn't tell you 'the truth', they just go out in the forest river and that's all. Truth about being in relations and links is cool but it doesn't solve anything.
@@AshPatterson Many ppl are saying that P4 is about finding the 'truth' but game doesn't give any truth at the end. Yes you've found some 'god' and defeated him, that's all. In real life there is no truth. You will never know the truth.
1. Persona 3 Portable is the first game I ever played that got me interested to look on the franchise. I had been going through existential crisis in my high school life, but this game shown me that every life is precious and it not too late to seek the purpose of your life. 2. Persona 4 Golden is the first persona series I heard a lot back in 2020 and it the game that leaves a HUGE impact onto me that I personally love. I have been dealing lots of my life issues for a long time and I am always a loner; most of the times I thought I am inferior to others and that I didn't feel appreciated to my efforts or my existence. This game have the life changing scenario and I love it. It given the message that it okay to be who you truly are and it doesn't matter what your flaws are or what people think of you. I have been looking things like that for a long time and I never couldn't be more happier. Also I love characters in this game(mainly the Investigation Team, Adachi and the Dojima family), made me really wish they exist in real life and befriend with them. This game will always be in the special place of my heart. 3. Persona 5 Royal/Strikers is the heart and soul series I ever experienced, love the new changes. This game gave me a sense that I am playing the original smt series, because it shown the aspect of moral codes, independence. If you go to the third semester it shows that you have a choice what you determine to do for you and everyone's future. It gives the smt gimmick either those two endings you support during the third semester that none of them are bad, but doesn't mean it going to be perfect. The soundtracks is the most lovable there is. 4. Persona 1 and Persona 2 duology deserves the praise for their narrative storyline. I may not like the gameplay where they have random encounter system, but I do appreciate the effort they put in the plots and character developments. Despite the flaws, they put lot of hearts that made them recognizable.
Very few games can match the emotional attachment I have to Persona 4. Mother 3 does, and maybe Ocarina of Time. If P4 just had more interesting dungeons it would probably top Mother 3 as my all-time favorite game.
I feel the same exact way, after beating mother 3 i didnt think i could ever be as emotionally attached to a game as was with mother 3 and the series as a whole, but then i played persona 4. Its been months since i beat p4G, and even still watching the end credits will cause me to tear up just like when i watch the ending scenes of mother 3.
If you think that both routes in Persona 1 being canonical is confusing wait till you learn about how both routes in Resident Evil 1 are both canonical. At least Resident Evil 2 has a canonical route.
Persona 3 is my personal favorite, the themes really affected me in a way that almost no other game has. Also your views on Persona 5 are spot on how I feel about that game, which all the negativity that comes from discussion about that game, it's nice to see some positivity. Still need to get to the psx/psp games, i might try them out now with the eternal punishment psp translation coming out. Nice video 👍
it hurt seeing persona 1 ranked at the bottom but in terms of it as a game it makes sense lol. manga wise it's debately the best in the series by far lol. Still a great video tho lol love seeing persona 4 at the top personally my ranking is 5: persona 3 4: persona 2 3: persona 5 2: persona 1 1: persona 4
@@insertnamehere658 the manga is amazing and the themes of the games and characters are some of the best in the series. It has the best music in the series too imo
@@drowzee6076 I disagree. I haven't read the manga, but I've heard good things. The themes are good, but the execution is rather poor. Same with the characters honestly. Besides maki, I wouldn't say any of them are good. Especially the 5th one as they are written to be inconsequential to the story, and don't get to shine in anyway. Music wise, I think P5 is the best, but the music is pretty decent. I hesitate to call it bad, but it definitely hasn't aged well.
What makes P4 truly special to me is the immersion. Everytime I play this game I feel like I'm in rural Japan and Nanako is my actual cousin. They lost the magic with P5 despite all the gameplay improvements.
@@dencheq I can see how that would make the game more immersive since we would focus more on the characters and dialogue than the gameplay elements, which persona 5 improves on it significantly.
So interestingly enough Persona 1 no longer has an issue as to how it should be played, as there is now a mod replacing every song to their original counterparts in the remake version, making it the ultimate experience for the game, imo. EP also now has a proper translation.
Persona 4 Golden was my introduction into Persona and SMT in general. I still break out my Vita from time to time to replay it, and recently got the plat for it (damn you Hardcore Risette Fan trophy! The most annoying bronze trophy I've ever struggled through!)
@@Gael-x999 it didn't need any more life sim. It was an epilogue, a dlc. It may not have been the greatest gameplay-wise, but the story was great, with important character development, especially for Aigis.
With my feet upon the ground, I watch Tony 4 You with sound and; open up to the shadows within, I hear him talk along my skin I'm; reaching up and reaching out, I'm reaching out for the random encounter; or whatever will one-shot me. or whatever will one-shot me. or whatever will one-shot me.
Creating bonds with the characters in Persona 4 is what makes the game truly exceptional. You spend a whole year with these characters, and when it's over, you're left with cherished memories. For me, it wasn't about the story. Even after defeating the final boss, the game allows players to spend the remaining time with the characters, like going snowboarding. Despite some repetitive jokes, like the cooking scenes, playing Persona 4 was incredibly satisfying.
It's always good to see people praise persona 4. Although it isn't my favorite I really enjoyed it. P5 takes the cake for me because I felt really good about the characters and their stories. The Sun and the Hierophant social links were some I really liked. The Royal part was also very well done, although the faith link _could've_ been explored more in the early game in my opinion. The second best for me is P3 mainly because of the story (I'm excluding the answer here) and nostalgia for being my first Persona(and SMT) game, it really felt like a true hero journey and it offered clousure in some aspects where most games don't touch. Although it reaaaaally grinds my gears to have your sacrifice seem taken so lightly when characters talk about it in Persona 4 Max Arena (with the exception of Elisabeth, her stand in the whole thing is something I appreciate). Slightly behind comes P4. To be honest, I really liked loved that game, but _something_ didn't click with me. There is that slight sense of disconfort with some party members that I can't really put my finger on. It's the kind of thing like, you know these people are nice but _you_ can't seems to get well with them. In my case, it was Chie and Yosuke. I love the cast to bits, but I get weirded out bit by those two. I played both P2 and P1 on the PSP and although I liked the games and story, the gameplay took a bit of the shine. Still would recommend them though.
agree. something about p5 story just makes me wanted to understand the story more deeper and some characters (especially joker). the story and atmosphere is good and very interesting. the them is not about wanting to live or bonding, but society itself which for me is more interesting. as for the character, the reason is joker is an interesting character, he is good but compare to the other modern trilogy persona mc, he is the most grey allignment out all of them. akechi and maruki also counts.
Pretty much the same to me. I've heard about Persona series longtime ago but started it around two years ago. My first Persona game was P4G, I dropped it after 20 hours bc of lack gameplay, repeatable stuff, too much filler. I wanted to start with P3 but there is just no good PC version. Then P5 has blown my mind. After that I started P3FES with controllable party mod, I was surprised that this is actually a great game even if it's outdated in many ways. Good thing it has a Remake now.
Honestly, I'm just happy to finally see an SMT TH-camr acknowledge that yes, Persona 5 is a great game. Really good list that I wholeheartedly agree with
@@Tony4You honestly p5 theme is way more interesting than p3 (haven't play the game yet but i do watch walkthrough and the anime). for the atmosphere is arguable but i give an edge to p5.
@@Hymn_ I can see your point but I disagree, Persona 3's theme is muuuuch more interesting than 5's cause everyone will experience death (whether themselves or someone related to them) unlike 5's where it's generally a minority and mainly in specific countries. Not to make P5's themes look unimportant but it's not as interesting as something well will have to go through and fear.
@@thegamerfe8751 well it's matter of preference. p3's theme about death is great, but i prefer p5 theme about society itself. even if it's only japan, it shows that even a theme about a society of a specific country can be done well. both are reletable and good in their own ways
@@cptsonicbelmont p3 is my favorite persona and Reload still gave me that nostalgic feeling while adding something new!(hate to say I've had it since release but still havent finished it😭 ) but so far I love it
My first Persona game was P5 and i thought nothing else can top it. I later played P4 and already thought it was better than Persona 5 half way through. I really liked the characters and the story :)
@@dencheq better characters, story, overall creepy atmosphere at times, and better social links IMO. only thing I enjoyed p5 over p4 was the gameplay and dungeons
@@Blackstar0 Teddie and Kanji (are the worst characters by ratings) are better than Morgana? Outside SL main cast presentation and in plot stories are better made in P5. There is almost no story in P4, 3/4 of the game you listen to main cast stories and running around. P4 is more visual novel with filler thna JRPG.
I think it's interesting that some people seem to dislike Answers so much. Personally I really like the things it did for the story and characters dealing with the fallout of the main game's ending. For example while some people coming to dislike her portrayal, I really like Yukari's arc in Answers in how it parallels her issues with her mother and father in the main game in an interesting way. In Answers, her troubled relationship with her friends after her recent loss mirrors her troubled relationship with her mother in the main game after her father's death, and her drive to see and bring back Makoto again no matter the cost in Answers mirrors her desire to uncover the truth of her father to bring back his good name in the main game. Her arc also parallels and subverts her own Persona Isis's mythology, of journeying to picking up the pieces of her deceased loved one to resurrect him. In the main game Yukari succeeds in picking up the pieces of the truth and restores and reaffirms the ideal father she has always believed in, a journey of vindicating her faith in the face of doubt. While in Answers this myth is subverted with her failing to attain the pieces (the key) and bring back her loved one, but she gains the truth that gives her greater understanding and dispels her held beliefs over her loved one, a journey of enlightenment or answers. I love both the symmetry and complementary nature of these two journeys that Yukari goes through. Yukari's one of my favorite Persona characters for this reason, as Answers I feel make her feel defined and complete. I hope one day you'll play the game again and do a deep dive on Persona 3's plot and perhaps explain your own perspective on Answers specifically, (maybe when the game gets the inevitable remake?) I'd love to watch a video like that!
It was definitely cool to see a ranking where 5 isn't either at the very bottom or very top and even though I speak as someone who would put 5 at the very bottom (the characters are enough to put it at the end of the heap, particularly Morgana and Futaba), it was great to see a balanced perspective and I can appreciate that the gameplay is fantastic.
Yeah a lot of the lists are known before even watching depending on the person lol. Thankfully I try to keep any community memes or talking points out of my head when thinking critically about the series.
I've gotta get around to Golden sometime, and Portable when it comes out. Royal is the only one I've played so far. Glad it wasn't at the bottom of the list. I was worried cuz I know some people _really_ don't like it for reasons I've never really understood.
My guess is some kind of hipster-effect. Y'know, "it's popular now so it's bad". Of course, that's not gonna be the case for everyone who dislikes it but probably a fair amount.
Very nuanced list. I like it! I haven't played every game yet, but I want to when I have time and get through my list of games I still need to finish. Speaking of which, an English translation of Persona 2 Eternal Punishment PSP has been released. Pretty much out of the blue... I haven't gotten the time to check it out, but you should look into it, especially the Tatsuya Scenario that was added to that game.
I tried playing Persona 4 three times, each time dropping it.The best Persona game for me is Persona 3 Portable. That one is the one I played through couple times. The story is way better, and summoning personas makes much more sense than in P4 to me
Loved to see others agreeing with P4 being the best, the game has such a rich plot and the companionship with your friends, the struggles they all go through, the emotions, the demons they all have inside them, its just too good, I so wish Atlus makes a sequel of P4 with all the OG characters grown up.......and catching up with each other on life so far
You can't say something is the best without trying the other ones, I was convinced P4 and P5 were the best games ever until I played 3 & the 2 duology, those games are masterpieces and I honestly couldn't care less about 4 & 5 now.
@@YukariTakeba-hb9us i could literally say the same lmao I honestly thought P4 was peak until i played P1 and P2 and the P2 duology easily overthrew P4 as my favorite persona game simply because of how much i related to the cast and how the game felt like it handled characters realistically plus it encourages you to let your friends grow on their own instead of you, the protagonist being the solution to everyone’s problems (unlike P4 and P5) I will probably replay P4 at some point though because i want to see wether or not this is just recency bias or if P4 is truly flawed in terms of how unrealistic and tropey the game is (not to mention im not a fan of how anti climatic and lame the Izanami fight ended with the power of friendship being the solution and P3 definitely did it better by hyping it up)
Yeah he sure does especially since IMO PQ2 has some of the best music in persona, and P3 female character arc in that one was pretty good... I hope it not a he does not like Etrian Odyssey type of gameplay.....
I was unfortunately already privy to your favorite due to Nam and Aqua’s podcast (it’s pretty epic, I have to say), but I was quite interested in the rest of this - honestly really excellent - list. I haven’t gotten through 2 Eternal Punishment nor the original, but of what I have played my list goes: 1. P5R (Best gameplay, intriguing enough story, great cast, awesome finale) 2. P4G (Great messages, awesome mystery, incredible cast, and my favorite social link selection of all of the games) 3. P2 IS (Sublime narrative, great cast, albeit sort of eh gameplay overall) 4. P3 (Great story and characters, good gameplay overall. As you said, the peaks are probably higher than anything in P5R, but those valleys really are quite low. A lot of those universally hated social links are here. It’s still an awesome game, though, don’t get me wrong)

@@ArshadZahid_nohandleideas Yeah and they didn't give me a choice either, I bought the HD remaster for nocturne and even caved in and got the 3ds remake for strange journey(even when people said ds is better) but dds1 and 2? Man that's impossible! I would have to get an entire ps2 system and a copy off ebay, just not worth it. Plus IMO the game is slow, a bit to slow gameplay wise so being able to use turbo was life changing😅.
I really wanted to get into the first Persona (from the PSP remake), but I'd heard that the encounter rate is really high in the PSP version compared to the PS1 version due to them just porting the formula over and not accounting for the PSP's processing speed being much higher than the PS1's. It was an incredibly frustrating grindfest nonetheless, though, "Screw my luck" did happen a fair bit, and I really don't like how insanely limited you are in how many skill cards you can hold and how random the negotiation system is. I'm not sure if it would be best to focus on EXP or on skill cards for the beginning, as well. I do find it really difficult to know when I should start fusing Personas, but being able to fuse high-level Personas at the start even though you cannot actually use them is really difficult, as is the very fact that one's Persona level and their own level are two different things.
With P4G on top of my personal list, I do agree that the addition of Marie is the least exciting change from vanilla. Big fan of Kana Hanazawa so I was really hyped back when the news reached me, but I really don't feel much of her impact to the story. There's little to no satisfaction upon the completion of her arc, but at least the dungeon and kaguya are both aesthetically pleasing. Despite all this I still put the game on a pedestal and it won't be leaving anytime soon. On a side note, I was furious when I had the xmas date with Ebihara and she wore her freaking uniform.
Persona 4 Golden was the only one that i watched completely, while i'm starting 5R at the moment (with some things that i know [because spoilers are inevitably everywhere...sigh], but i don't understand why they are the way they are), and i think'd to myself : "Hey since i would like to play P5R, why we don't take a look at the previuous one? It won't hurt...". The problem is that i'm strange, because despite not having played it yet (can't wait for the global releases!!!), i think that P4G is probably my favourite game of the series, hell i even think that is also my favourite game of all time. I literally liked every single thing about that game (Marie was fine) with the P4 anime literally being the most hilarious thing i've ever watched (the original, not the Golden adaptation, since i heard that is such a downgrade that is almost heartbreaking). In sinthesis, i couldn't agree more about you're choice.
I recently replayed Persona 4 and can understand why it's your number 1. I have to disagree with you when it comes to the social links though. There are a lot of great ones like the party members, Dojima, Nanako and some others, but there are quite a few social links i found really uninteresting. Once i completed all the good social links and i had to deal with the not so good ones, the game really starts to drag on for me.

Persona 4 golden is an immersive experience! Soundtracks are top-notch as well. And amazing VAs cast and artwork of characters. I recently played persona 5 royal, it's a nice upgrade in graphics but just not the same.
For me, I found persona 5 royal to be a tiny bit more enjoyable. Idk, i guess I got tired of the constant tropes, more so than in persona 5, and certain story beats felt cheesy to me even if persona in general can be kinda cheesy in how it is presented. I liked the maturity and vibe of persona 5 more and I just liked morgana more as the mascot of the game. teddie just got on my nerves every time he opened his mouth. However, persona 4 is special in its themes and how personal the story can get. The cast really did felt like a bunch of friends out in the sticks and their bonds felt more precious than in persona 5. The setting is just perfect for persona 4. I can go on and on about persona 4 but ig I only really liked persona 5 more is really just the graphics and the gameplay aspect of the game. It's just a smother game to get through.
P3 fes was a lot better imo at least for story and characters. 4 felt like there were no stakes or consequences and the main villain was subpar at best and the cast felt forced into being friends while 3 felt more natural idk. All the games are amazing in their own right
I have a feeling before getting too into the video that Revelations (for the PS1 not the weird PSP remake) will be the worst But damn if that still isn't my standard for Persona 😭 I miss when the series used to be more Horror RPG than Funky Anime dating RPG.

I'm always going to prefer gameplay over atmosphere so when it comes to P3 Portable is always going to be an easy pick over fes for me. Plus femc's music is better than most of Makoto's
3 is my favorite. Still has a special place in my heart , even though I accept that 4 and 5 are better games. I greatly look forward to replaying portable again though I do wish it was Fes with all the QoL that was in portable. Also I didnt realize til many years later that Mitsuru marin karin was a meme. I never really found it that bad. That or im biased cuz shes my persona waifu.
Persona 1 and 2 are my top two. Why, the like the surreal tones and the loose connection to the main line games (IF). I had fun with 3, 4, and 5, but they lack that impact. It is why I prefer 80's anime OVAs to modern OVAs. I feel the same way about the Persona games.
I got into persona just this year not really appreciating vanilla P5. Only clearing the first dungeon then never playing again. I went ahead and bought P4/P4AU2 bundle at discounted price on steam sale cause why not . P4g has really been a refreshing experience babys first jrpg. I can now say i'm persona fan almost done with it. Definitely going back to P5 when the time comes.
I really think its a personality thing. Game is solid no matter what lense you use, but i think you need a certain set of personalities to get on the hype train
@@assortmentofpillsbutneverb3756 I can break down what I mean a bit more now,but yeah not saying it's bad. Just at times felt formulaic, and I felt like I didn't really get to understand the physiological message. Tho idk maybe finding yourself isn't something that interests me. The other parts of its physiology feel underdeveloped. I enjoyed the game and played till start to end,but when I hit the end just felt unfulfilled, and yes I got the true ending.

Yo Tony, just wanted you to know in case you missed the news that the English translation of the PSP version of Eternal Punishment just released yesterday!
17:40 P2 Eternal P. translation us finished lol
This probably wasn't the case when you were recording, but as of this upload the translation for Eternal Punishment on PSP is finished! The translation for SMT1 on PS1 is also finished if anyone is interested! Fingers crossed that Devil Summoner on PSP will be ready soon...
Here's hoping we'll also get a music patch for Devil Summoner because the PSP soundtrack is such a downgrade.
Wait, that translation finished? When?
@@greatdane7252 the problem with DS is not the new music its jsut that PPSSPP doesnt emulate the reverb effects correctly making a lot of songs sound distorted
@@Stoltzy92 OG guy was taking like a decade lol but the other team only took 13 months
I had plenty of time to sink into it, and it was really nice being able to play a game about hanging out with friends during a time where I couldn’t hang out with friends.
same
Persona 4 always helps people. That much is consistent with people that love it
P5 helped me socialize in 2019, because i was way too shy, and i was in a familiar situation to Joker(considering that i was in a new school and without any of my old friends, but not the rest of Joker's backstory thankfully)
P4 made me just feel like i was actually Yu and those characters were all real
P3 was extremely bittersweet, i played it during quarantine and for some reason the last month and talking with NPC's while the rumors of world's ending with the endgame overworld song made me go like "Man... This hits hard, fuck it, this game is a masterpiece"
All of them are great games in many ways
Same here

Great list.

i've been replaying Persona 4 Golden lately. i never get tired of experiencing Kanji or Naoki's social links. i actually only _just_ found out in a random night time conversation that Naoki and Kanji were childhood friends. how fitting.
So many little details in every playthrough. I can't wait to play it again

Yeah, same. The characters especially in P2 duology is really amazing (the character growth part). Really made u stick to the game since the story is juz that great.
@@aizatasyraf2514 Exactly plus having adults as the main cast is refreshing. I really hope Atlus makes a remake
Imo P5 is a better game bc of better dungeons.
Thank you! Not to mention if you're consistently analyzing new enemies for weaknesses, party members usually won't do anything wacky lol
Yeah, personally i never had Mitsuru spamming Marin Karin and i used to examinate a lot the enemies and use the commands
The only AIs that made me go
"FUCK YOU AI" were Junpei, Ken and Koromaru
The only issue i really had with the AI was when you analyzed an enemy with counter and your allies would refuse to use any physical attacks
Aren't some AI function only available later on in the story? Pretty dumb to hold back key features if their the essence of how your battle system works
It always feels nice to see P4 at the top
I still remember first playing it around the time I figured out who i truly was, and around the time i moved from the city to a small countryside town
The setting of p4 just spoke to me so much, easily making it my fave
It means so much to so many different people, this game will always be relevant. No other game comes close
Who you truly are? Are you gay? A weeb?
I played it 2 years ago and I was at a very pivotal time in my life and I actually felt like I was living in Inaba and hanging out with the investigation team. Also it was the first smt/ persona game I played and since then I've played 8 or 10 of them and it is now my favorite game series - all because I played persona 4 at a certain time and it resonated with me so much. Its just a masterpiece of a game and I love it so much.
That's probably is called nostalgia.

My favourite part of the persona series is that no matter how low you can put it on your personal list you can never call one game exactly "bad" lol
You can definitely call them some of them bad, fairly certain most people praise 1 and 2 stories for they're stories but view the gameplay as boring / abysmal and even some that feel that way about P3.

This'll be a fun one. Already know your favorite, but curious on the others
Ooo i’m on my way to work but I am SO excited to watch this when I’m home!
Would be awesome if the P2 duology ever gets a proper remake with an overhaul to the battle system. You said it perfectly that it was always a race to the next story beat and winning battles was never a satisfying feeling.
Here's hoping Atlus goes back to the originals after Soul Hackers 2
Also damn the random encounters were way too much.
A proper remake of the P2 duology would straight up be one of my 3 wishes if I ever were to find a magic lamp

Persona 4 and 3 are basically tied for my favorite games of all time they both compliment each other very well.
i think the reason they compliment each other so well is because atlus was on a duology streak at the time: DDS, Raidou, Persona 3&4, and even going a little bit into the NintendoDS era too with Devil Survivor.

Playing Persona 4 Golden when I moved to a EXTREMELY small town has heavily biased me in its favor.
“I’ve been waiting for this”
You have extremely good taste mate

I feel the same exact way, after beating mother 3 i didnt think i could ever be as emotionally attached to a game as was with mother 3 and the series as a whole, but then i played persona 4. Its been months since i beat p4G, and even still watching the end credits will cause me to tear up just like when i watch the ending scenes of mother 3.

@@drowzee6076 I disagree. I haven't read the manga, but I've heard good things. The themes are good, but the execution is rather poor. Same with the characters honestly. Music wise, I think P5 is the best, but the music is pretty decent. I hesitate to call it bad, but it definitely hasn't aged well.
You've definitely got the most unique list I've seen
For me, P1 is the worst persona games ever. The game is still good tho. But would not rank it over any other persona games.
What makes P4 truly special to me is the immersion. Everytime I play this game I feel like I'm in rural Japan and Nanako is my actual cousin. They lost the magic with P5 despite all the gameplay improvements.
Maybe cause Persona 4 is actually more a visial novel than JRPG.
Classic persona fans have been doing well recently, I'm happy the community makes these things possible
Persona 4 is still a golden game
Yeah, and P3 is FEStivale. And P5 is literallya a Royal that you can play; you know, "Royal" as in Рояль.
One of the best games ever for real
Persona 4 Golden was my introduction into Persona and SMT in general. I still break out my Vita from time to time to replay it, and recently got the plat for it (damn you Hardcore Risette Fan trophy! The most annoying bronze trophy I've ever struggled through!)
I'll never understand the hate towards The Answer... It was awesome and very important for the story and the character development.
Because it strips the life simulator aspect of the persona series and primarily focuses on combat which isn't personas strong suit
@@Gael-x999 it didn't need any more life sim. It was an epilogue, a dlc. It may not have been the greatest gameplay-wise, but the story was great, with important character development, especially for Aigis.

Reach out to Tony4You!
This is exactly why the P2 duology and P1 need a remake from the ground up. I've played P1 but the gameplay feels so tedious to me
It's always good to see people praise persona 4.

I hope one day you'll play the game again and do a deep dive on Persona 3's plot and perhaps explain your own perspective on Answers specifically, (maybe when the game gets the inevitable remake?) I'd love to watch a video like that!
we getting persona 3 remake lol and I hope we get answers as like a dlc bc it seems they are remaking the original story.
I tried to love the first Persona, but the insane encounter rate ruined it for me
It was definitely cool to see a ranking where 5 isn't either at the very bottom or very top and even though I speak as someone who would put 5 at the very bottom (the characters are enough to put it at the end of the heap, particularly Morgana and Futaba), it was great to see a balanced perspective and I can appreciate that the gameplay is fantastic.

I haven't gotten the time to check it out, but you should look into it, especially the Tatsuya Scenario that was added to that game.
Persona 5 Royal is my Favorite JRPG of All Time and it’s in my Top 5 Games of All Time
I tried playing Persona 4 three times, each time dropping it.The best Persona game for me is Persona 3 Portable. That one is the one I played through couple times. The story is way better, and summoning personas makes much more sense than in P4 to me
Totally agree with Number 1, Golden is fucking amazing.
King opinion
Loved to see others agreeing with P4 being the best, the game has such a rich plot and the companionship with your friends, the struggles they all go through, the emotions, the demons they all have inside them, its just too good, I so wish Atlus makes a sequel of P4 with all the OG characters grown up.......and catching up with each other on life so far
Persona 4 is really just something special
@@Tony4You Damn right, I haven't played P3 and P5, but I can confidently say, P4 would be my favourite among these three games.
You can't say something is the best without trying the other ones, I was convinced P4 and P5 were the best games ever until I played 3 & the 2 duology, those games are masterpieces and I honestly couldn't care less about 4 & 5 now.
@@YukariTakeba-hb9us i could literally say the same lmao
I honestly thought P4 was peak until i played P1 and P2 and the P2 duology easily overthrew P4 as my favorite persona game simply because of how much i related to the cast and how the game felt like it handled characters realistically plus it encourages you to let your friends grow on their own instead of you, the protagonist being the solution to everyone’s problems (unlike P4 and P5)
I will probably replay P4 at some point though because i want to see wether or not this is just recency bias or if P4 is truly flawed in terms of how unrealistic and tropey the game is (not to mention im not a fan of how anti climatic and lame the Izanami fight ended with the power of friendship being the solution and P3 definitely did it better by hyping it up)
P4 almost has no plot actually. It's mostly a visual novel
Woah woah woah Q1&2 at the bottom!? You need to explain yourself either in the comments or in an entirely separate video 💀
When the #PersonaQ squad drops in
Yeah he sure does especially since IMO PQ2 has some of the best music in persona, and P3 female character arc in that one was pretty good... I hope it not a he does not like Etrian Odyssey type of gameplay.....
I was unfortunately already privy to your favorite due to Nam and Aqua’s podcast (it’s pretty epic, I have to say), but I was quite interested in the rest of this - honestly really excellent - list.
I haven’t gotten through 2 Eternal Punishment nor the original, but of what I have played my list goes:
1. P5R (Best gameplay, intriguing enough story, great cast, awesome finale)
2. P4G (Great messages, awesome mystery, incredible cast, and my favorite social link selection of all of the games)
3. P2 IS (Sublime narrative, great cast, albeit sort of eh gameplay overall)
4. P3 (Great story and characters, good gameplay overall. As you said, the peaks are probably higher than anything in P5R, but those valleys really are quite low. A lot of those universally hated social links are here. It’s still an awesome game, though, don’t get me wrong)
Can you give me a link to Nam and Aqua's podcast? Honestly I'd like to check it

As an aside I quite like the Junpei pfp

I know this is a persona based video, but I didn't have much to comment so I'll say this: In my quest to play all the acclaimed smt game's, I Recently emulated(unfortunately) digital devil saga 1, a fantastic experience, truly something I didn't expect to be so amazing, maybe you should put a light on this hidden shiny gem Tony 👀. I wonder what is your stance on the duology...
"unfortunately" is warranted, emulating almost 21-year-old games is a no-brainer
@@iansantiago6526 oh curse this late 2013 MacBook that only runs macOS big sur
The chad Narukami never fails baby!
P4 fans stay winning
Yosuke was an romance option there are english and japanese voice lines uploaded to youtube

Which one are uninteresting.
@@labadaba1147 I think both routes for the sports club are quite boring and I'm also not a fan of Eri's social link. Also didn't really enjoy Naoki and Hisano. I get why people like these but i never really got hooked on them.
@@migguman1724 In my opinion you choosed the best social links not counting the party members (maybe except hisano). I have more problems with 3. It has the best one in the series (akinari), but most of the are rather meh.
@@migguman1724 Really? Kou, Naoki, and Hisano are some of my favorite social links in the series. To each their own
Okay gotta ask. Did anyone enjoy the Answer in P3 FES, cause i loved it idk y but it ended up making P3 my favorite game, like ik the gameplay for the whole game was pretty meh but the ending to the story was amazing imo
If your interested in a deep dive on Persona 4 might I recommend the TH-cam channel Hiding In Private. They have over 20 videos on the plot, gameplay, and social links it’s definitely worth the watch if you have time: th-cam.com/play/PL9VZciHuJ2bU8SAiEAGL11_2cB9m2MZHw.html
He's great!
Taste is taste, i my self would put P4 much lower and P3 and P5 higher. But the most important thing is to respect others opinions.
I can respect p4 as number 1. But 3 changed my life, so I kinda have to put it at number 1 for me
Dw broski, you made an excellent choice by putting P4 at number one. It is the best one. Dont let the P3 peeps get to you!
P3 lovers always go hard, I love them though
P3 fes was a lot better imo at least for story and characters. 4 felt like there were no stakes or consequences and the main villain was subpar at best and the cast felt forced into being friends while 3 felt more natural idk. All the games are amazing in their own right
Wow, 80 Comments, It doesn't feel like is still on private.
Hope everyone is from Patreon
I have a feeling before getting too into the video that Revelations (for the PS1 not the weird PSP remake) will be the worst
But damn if that still isn't my standard for Persona 😭 I miss when the series used to be more Horror RPG than Funky Anime dating RPG.
P2 is literally P1, but better.
@@insertnamehere658
Not as horror themed at all and they added REALLY hokey voice acting.
It plays more like an anime episode than a horror RPG.
It is indeed awesome though. I own both
@@yuripetrovic7606 Still any persona games > P1. For me at least
@@iguoyrxayananikihs9505
You probably also prefer them over the main MEGATEN series.
I think you are right with your judgment.
Thank you for the assessment my friend
Even though persona 1 is my least favorite game it kinda holds a special place in my heart because it was the first persona game I ever played and the my introduction to the smt franchise as a whole lol
“Since there are only six games.”
Me: Cries in Persona Mobile Online.
Now you can play the PSP version of persona 2 eternal punishment! Just came out the fan translation
Good tier list but I'm disappointed in you for saying that Persona 5 has better demon negotiation than SMT.
I bet any persona game you play first would be your favorite persona game. For me it's P3
That's most likely true for people lol
He actually did it.
man i wish i was able to love P4 more but i'll never get the hype
