what a great build when i look back at your builds from your early days you have become a very good builder ,loving the diorama keep the great vids comming
Nice build Matt, and super little diorama. It's a lovely little kit and a good example of the 'new' tool Airfix era. I built the 109 E-3 version a couple of years ago, it was my first build after a long time away from modelling and I really enjoyed it. The only things that let it down were the fit of the canopy in closed position and the airiel which I found impossible to detach from the sprues in one piece, even with modelling side cutters!
After watching this video and finishing off my own 109,I think these have become my beloved aircraft ;) Either way, great work and a little scene always goes a long way for me.
I have to say you did a great job on this kit, and that neat little diorama is perfect for it. I first built it when I was nine years old and it was rather challenging then, but I had another go at it two years ago, and while this newer version is pretty impressive with its level of detail, the sprue attachment points meant a lot of the smaller parts got broken before they even got onto the plane and the whole thing was a disappointment in the end and I ended up scrapping it.
I have a Tamiya 1/48 Bf109-G6 sitting in my Shelf of Shame with the mottle paint job to complete. Your video will be a great influencer on completing this, Thanks. One of the things I have learned from this kit is that the spine is recessed. The instructions actually state "Actual aircraft has recessed channels here. Do not fill." That was news to me. Learn something new every day!
I do my best to avoid mottling as I worry I'd mess it up. I've actually only airbrushed it once and spent ages doing it even though I only did a small area. I basically had the airbrush set up so that barely any paint came out and just kept going over it multiple times to build it up. It avoided any spidering as by the time I was ready to go over it again it was already dry. Took about five times longer than if I'd done it in one go but it was easier on my nerves.
Gotta say that’s a might fine build and the bonus dio at the end was really well done! I have always started with the darker colours for camouflage as I use it like a ‘pre-shade’ for the lighter colour going on over it. Great build with a great finish and very informative.
@@ModelMinutes with traditional painting media like Acrylics and Watercolours yes, light colours first followed by darker. With airbrushing you can just build up the colours till you get the opacity you want. I used to undercoat everything with white and then paint light to dark over that but getting the nice gradients was really hard.
Nice build. I built a Hobby Boss 109E last year that I did in a similar paint scheme, but I wasn't brave enough to airbrush the mottling. That kit was nowhere near as good as your Airfix kit. The plastic was very thin, and the aerial was moulded into the fuselage and was extremely fragile. Needless to say it broke off and was a nightmare to stick back on. In the end t came out looking quite nice though. Good to see you using a couple of SMS products. I have been using them since the beginning of 2023 and find them to be fantastic. I have a bit of an issue with the matt clear coat though as it can be affected by cold or hot weather. I was getting a lot of small white spots as the talc was separating out in winter. If you're painting in your house it is probably fine, but I do all my spraying in my garage, which gets a bit cold in winter and a bit hot in summer. I have ended up using Tamiya lacquer clear coats for matt or satin finishes as they don't seem to suffer from this problem, at least not very often.
That's a really great model presentation; a very tidy little BF109 model, and a very effective little dio' with the ground-crew figures; it really gives a tangible sense of scale to the aircraft! 😃 Excellent stuff...! 👍
A very nice result! One thing I did notice though was you filling in the "gap" on top of the fuselage - that spot should actually have one! As far as I know it's the only fighter with a panel line running the length of the spine
Yes, I did recall that there was meant to be one there after I had finished the build, the 109 effectively being built of panels that had a join at the top and bottom of the fuselage. There is a slight seam there in the finished model but not as proud as it could have been
Looks nice Matt. I notice you didn't mention washing the parts. Not too important fot the model parts but absolutely vital to wash the polythene figures in washing up liquid to remove the parting agent if you want paint to stick. I'm sure you know but perhaps for the benefit of viewers (particularly skill level 1!). I notice Nigel modelling bench has had a bit of bother with aerial elastic.
Great video as always, the diorama ones are always cool! You should try building an armour model some time, it would be cool to see how your skills translate from air models.
I think that was a good effort on the soft edged cammo, one of the things I like about luftwaffe camouflage. I have a tip for you - to make it easier I make a mask out of plastic card or thin cardboard - use the kit part as a template, lay it on the card and trace round it. Then cut out the 'splotch' shapes, blu-tac the card onto the model (with background colour already painted and dry of course) then spray your camouflage pattern by airbrushing over the template, mid-range pressure. I generally get a pretty good result, it controls the pattern and prevents getting splatters where you don't want them. You can argue that cutting out the mask is a bit of a faff, but the results are worth it and you can use the template over and over again. I recently did this on an FW190A-3 (Tamiya, 1:72 scale) and it came out great. Always enjoy your content, look forward to more.
Great build, always enjoy an Airfix build. 1/72 is not my favorite but because Airfix makes so many of my favorite planes, I do buy them regularly and build them up. I think for their price and the good quality they are great for beginners and easily tuned up for more advanced builders. For the canopies I always keep some Novus polishing systems on hand. They come in 3 packs 1-3 and after the 3rd round you can polish clear parts to a beautiful look. Check it out it's a great polishing system for clear parts or any plastic pieces really.

I have had this one sat on a shelf for years and decided to do it recently (haven’t done one since I was like 16) I now see why people don’t use the paints specified on the box, compared to yours which look like the box and blend in quite well together the humbrol ones aren’t even correct (the lighter one is lighter, the darker one is darker) they also stand out so much it could be a countries flag. Think I’ll be needing to check out these other brands
Humbrol makes a rather limited range of paints when compared to other companies, they are typically "close enough" to the colour they are representing, but not always a perfect match. This reason comes down to the range being more limited and as a result they will be suggested by Airfix in other kits where it again, is "close enough" to another colour, for example, you might see an external camo green on one kit also being suggested as an internal green on another which it would not be a perfect match for, but works in lieu of a specific shade that Humbrol don't make. I do use a lot of humbrol paints, but I also use lots of different brands as well, particularly when I'm looking for a more accurate shade
The Luftwaffe ground-crew were known by the pilots as 'Black Men' due to the black overalls they wore, dark grey is probably a good compromise for the right 'look' though.
@@ModelMinutes i've already learned from a few mistakes fortunately/unfortunately. it is cool to see the difference in the tamiya and airfix versions of the same plane.
Please ....get a clapperboard 😂 Other than that, interesting build. I do like the diorama. It's putting the plane in a context, rather than just having it sit there on a shelf looking like it doesn't belong. Planes don;t sit on shelves. So that tiny piece of grass and a few figures are a simple addition, which has an impact far beyond. Makes it look like a plane should. As this shows, doesn't have to be a massive airfield diorama with tons of expensive additions. It's just a couple of figures and some grass, which most modellers can manage cheaply and simply.
I'll see if I can find one :P Yes, I would like to have my models flying or in litle scenes, I still need to find some suitable flying stands really for these more modern kits
I have some experience with Vallejo paints, it will help if you put a few drops of Airbrush Flow Improver (Vallejo) in the mix. You should give it a try.
Definitely something that I will have to look at buying soon! I found that a few drops of the Humbrol acrylic thinner works for the moment, but if the flow improver provides better results it will be an improvement
This is uncanny… The first (and last) aeroplane diorama I built was of a 109 E (Heller - from the RAF museum) with some Airfix ground crew. I used that horrible 70s grass scatter and Humbrol authentic Luftwaffe colours. I still have a photo after 40+ years, so I was obviously proud of it! Yours looks much better, though.
Yeah, even though I spent quite a bit of time trying to tidy them all up, those lines are just so stubborn. From normal viewing distances they aren't that noticeable but the camera always makes them more obvious
I might have dodged a bullet here as mine got lost in the post and given I've never used an airbrush before (I do own one though) that paint scheme might have beaten me! I liked you diorama though. Will you be doing a more detailed video as it's something I'd like to try for the vehicles I have.
Great job Matt 🏆 That's a really good paint scheme and you did a nice job of it. The quality of that clear part is ridiculous. I had one even worse in a 109 starter set. Maybe polishing with a cream (I just use a little original T-cut) and a rotary tool on lowest speed would've helped it. The skill number has obviously been a copy and paste afterthought from a different 109 with an easier scheme - no way that's one a skill 1 builder should really be considering. KUTGW 👍
I always make a judgement on how greasy or dirty the plastic is, and the kind of paints I want to apply. I don’t always prime before lacquer paints as I find they don’t have problems sticking to the plastic. I will usually prime if the plastic is a little greasy or I’m using an acrylic that I know struggles to stick to the plastic (Vallejo and humbrol for example)
It is a lovely kit but the weak part is a the canopy. I would have preferred a one piece so it would be moulded properly. Mine have been very poor quality.
The idea that Bf 109 E's have to be painted in camouflage RLM 71 and RLM 02 on the upper surfaces seems to be ineradicable. Beginning in late 1939 existing Bf 109E machines were recamouflaged in grey tones (RLM 74/75/76) and new machines received these new colors in the factory. For whatever reason the Airfix plastic-figures are in 1/76th scale and soft PVC. So it's almost impossible to modify them or even remove the flash. I think there are meanwhile much better alternatives available...
I'm not enough of a history buff to know the specifics and nuances of paint schemes for all the models I build, so I'm more than content to usually just follow the painting instructions provided by the company. The Airfix figures are 1/76th because they were manufactured at the time when OO gauge trains were a big part of the Airfix brand, so they made them cross-compatible, and yes, whilst there are better alternatives I don't have those other models in the stash (and didn't want to spend more money on this project just for the sake of 3 figures when I could use the ones I already have)
try to finish your weels with airbrush , you can always get some office stencils with variety of circles so you can make you own circle painting masks as for mottling you have to work on thinning to air pressure ratio as your airbrush was spitting a lot
Yeah, it was very disappointing - they have done much better. The only reason I could think it was so flashy and scratched was over use and lack of care
Sorry, can't help myself as I fly RC warbirds, and I am a plane nut . Flaps are never in a raised position as they are there to generate lift. Also, they are seldon lowered more than 35%. I just wish I had 5% of your talent in modelling though.

The Airfix figures are 1/76th because they were manufactured at the time when OO gauge trains were a big part of the Airfix brand, so they made them cross-compatible, and yes, whilst there are better alternatives I don't have those other models in the stash (and didn't want to spend more money on this project just for the sake of 3 figures when I could use the ones I already have)
try to finish your weels with airbrush , you can always get some office stencils with variety of circles so you can make you own circle painting masks
as for mottling you have to work on thinning to air pressure ratio as your airbrush was spitting a lot
thanks for the info!
@@ModelMinutes you should try vallejo flow improver aka retarder to avoid airbrush clogging
I’d recommend listening to music while building kits
i normally have other YT videos on from my other favourite creators
@@ModelMinutesgood and proper 😂
Did I miss an explanation for no swastika?
Not explained. Simply not included in the kit
👍👍
Luftwaffe first used in the Spanish civil war in 1936
very true :)
I built a bf109E 4 but one day I got really bored so I buried it in my garden
I think I'd build a model a week if i received all them freebies ..... but nice build eny way .😊
Well, review samples aren't exactly free - usually the company expects them to be used and an honest opinion shared
State of the canopy airfix thats shocking
Yeah, it was very disappointing - they have done much better. The only reason I could think it was so flashy and scratched was over use and lack of care
Yo I just got a brengun Horner Ho-229 model kit in 1/144 on e baby for 20 AUD$
very cool!
@@ModelMinutes and also im going to sydney on a b737 on qantas on thursday (australia time) its a 1 hour and 28 minute flight

Sorry, can't help myself as I fly RC warbirds, and I am a plane nut . Flaps are never in a raised position as they are there to generate lift. Also, they are seldon lowered more than 35%. I just wish I had 5% of your talent in modelling though.
Flaps are definitely in a raised position when the aircraft has taken off and reached a good airspeed.
I used to work in aviation
You forget to flex on German viewers by buying a set of 1/72 Swastikas for the tail stabilizer.
I'm not really in the habit of adding decals that aren't included in the kit, it can be a lot of cost and effort for very little reward
Hi all. Ipms hellas event end of october. Athens 2024.
A little far for me to travel sadly, but I hope those who want to go are able to :)
Does your wife ever get irritated for you spending so much time on building model kits and not on her? 🤪
she tells me I am annoying her and to go back to "building your silly toys" lol
17:46 real
Sometimes I just don't see the point in putting all the tiny little blobs of decal on :P
You’ve certainly come along way since your early uploads where the highlight was scrubbing sprues with an old toothbrush 🪥!
😂 might still have that toothbrush
