I grow gigantic coleus. Last year I purchased a four pack but their sizing seemed stunted so this year it’s seed for me. I always enjoy your videos they are education and precise. Thanks for sharing your wisdom.
Thank you for all of your videos, they are quite informative and helpful! Everything is clear and simple, even to people with no experience with nurturing a garden. Thank you!
Great video Bro but I have a couple of queries 1. Frequency of watering after initially placing the seeds to sprout. 2. Is transplanting a must? 3. To be kept in shade or sunlight during above 2 steps? Looking forward to your reply...
So I planted like 8-9 seeds in a plastic bottle and made holes, but I put the seed under the dirt, will they still grow or should I put more seeds on top
Hi from India! Succinct and cut to the chase. Fantastic explainer. Looking forward to more. Thank you. :) (Friendly feedback: It will be superb if you could try overlaying time e.g. two weeks, four weeks and so on, in your forthcoming gardening HowTos)
At what time during germination do you uncover (plastic covering) the nursery? Do you uncover as soon as sprouts start to show or when most of the seeds sprout?
@@LearnHow2 Thank you! Right now they are just sprouting, some with the seed shell still on top of them. I will wait for a few more days. Thanks again and stay safe too!
I dont use heat mats but start the seeds off indoors on a south facing window cill. I then transfer them to my unheated greenhouse when the weather warms up a bit (usually April here in the UK).
I am not clear about light requirements. I read that comleus need light to germinate, unlike others, but what after that, as they are shade plants? THANK YOU!
Hi Jacob. There can be several reasons for drying out. Soil type, under watering, too much heat or sun. What are they getting a the moment (temperature, water, sunlight)? Keep safe.
2 questions: why transplant them into another tray after 2 weeks. Couldn’t you just space them out in the same tray? And (2) I’ve never seen that type of add-on nozzle on your watering can. From where can I order that end attachment? I’m in Canada. Thx.
1) The plants were in the small tray at least 4 weeks. I grow a large number of plants and find it easier to manage germination in small trays in a spare room in my home as the greenhouse is too cold early spring. I transplant to pots and bigger trays when they are ready for the greenhouse. 2) I only could find the add on nozzle in the uk here - www.littlefieldsfarm.com/haws-medium-fine-spray-plastic-rose-f5-10-oval?adGroupId=60998325070&device=c&gclid=CjwKCAiA4rGCBhAQEiwAelVti6kz0oeAcZkX3sKIIhRkCG67yxofByaYqnu47GVsawYhcJWmq4ptFxoCJRUQAvD_BwE
How often should you water coleus when it’s just sprouting and you take the lid off? And should you just water it after it has 2nd set of leaves and you transplant for the second time?
Hi Jacob. After the lid is taken off just water enough to keep the soil moist but not soaking wet otherwise the roots will drown and rot. Yes water before the second transplant. Keep safe.
I'm only 1 week into the growing season.. but will seed more tomorrow.! Can they be cared for over winter.! ? In a greenhouse and would they survive ? Or are they a single season plant only.? I've managed to keep germaniums over winter and have flowers in very early spring.. j
Hi Jacob. If you are planting in pots then use general purpose compost. If you are planting outside they do best in a position in partial shade, well drained soil that is only very slightly alkaline (pH just over 7).
Hi Anthonette. The seeds should not be in direct sunlight but should be covered with plastic until they germinate. When big enough to plant outside mine were in direct sunlight.
You didn't mention what kind of compost you used. Please give me the answer as I am going to germinate Coleus seeds very shortly. Thanks from Kolkata, India.🙏
Hi Elsie. I try to grow mine indoor until the plant gets quite large - slugs like tender parts of plants and they dont tend to attack larger plants so much. Keep safe.
Most coleus seeds are from India and thrive in bright sun and warm temperatures. Consistent watering is the key. I have a homemade drip system throughout my beds so I just water every 2-4 days depending on the temperature. This works for all my plants, flowers and vegetables.
@@Zenkitty26 Wow I had no idea, I always kept mine in the shade. I will try mine in the sun today. I have a whole bunch of babies so I will probably do 1/2 and 1/2 and see how they do.

Well done video, to the point. At 4:23, how old are they at this point?
They are about 7 weeks at this point but depends on your climate as to how fast they grow. Our climate in the UK is relatively cool.

Will they come back in the spring if left outside for the winter?
They will not survive frosts but will be ok in warmer climates.
Wow many thanks

How long does it take to grow

Hi Jeff
they can be kept overwinter but must be above 15 degC or else they will get fungal problems and rot.
Do you have to water the seeds when they are in the tray with the lid?
Only if it looks as if they are starting to dry out - the lid should help retain most of the moisture. Keep safe.

Can I leave them out over winter or will they need to be lifted. Thanks.
From what I have read (and not from experience) you need to dig them up, pot them and bring them indoors if you want to keep them over winter.
Yes dig them up they need pretty warm conditions you can also take cuttings in spring
Hi, what sort of compost do you use please? Also is clay soil a good type of soil for these?
I use general purpose potting compost. My soil is clay soil and the plants grew fine. Keep safe.
When do you start planting from seeds?
Hi Patricia. I start mine indoors just before spring (Mid February here in the uk). Keep safe.
How long did it take for them to get color?
As soon as the leaves appeared they were colored. Keep safe.
It’s always about the soil- the type of earth ELEMENT mixture to use!! Compost?? 🐄 any kind?
Hi Jody. Any general purpose or seed compost will be ok. Keep safe.
Did u water them while germinating?
Keep the seeds moist. However dont let them get over wet otherwise the seeds may rot.
Compost no soil?? Can we not grow in soil?
You can use soil but compost has more nutrients. You may need to add fertilizer to soil.
What kind of atmosphere should for coleus
I grew mine in full sun and watered regularly. You may need fertilizer if your soil is poor.

when the seeds germinate is it need to be in full sunlight or in shaded area??
