    I came to this channel to learn more about coleus cuttings. I purchased some for outdoor & they are huge & beautiful. I noticed the same thing about their colors based on how much sun they get. Surprisedly they can handle deep shade as well. Appreciate this video. TY!

    I'm one of the people who only thought they were outdoor plants. Whenever I tried indoor growing, they would drop almost all of their leaves or get crispy leaves. So because I hated having them die off come late fall, which would always make me so sad, I kind of stopped growing them even outside. Maybe I'll give one a try inside and see how it goes. I do love them. They bring back memories of both my youth and my dad because they were one of my fathers favorites and he always had them growing. Thanks for sharing yours tips and for posting this video.

      Your coleus might have had too much sun and too little water. That’s what my plant did when I baked it in the south window. Whoops!

      I got some of the ones in this video from Steve’s Leaves I believe. They’re only in stock for part of the year but if you search coleus on their site you should be able to sign up for alerts when they’re in stock. You can also find some cool varieties to start from seed if you have a grow light. The big red one came from a friend of mine, it’s about 12? Years old or something. She worked for a nursery so my guess is that was probably a proven winners variety or something but it’s lived forever with some propagating help.

    I have a huge coleus I grew from seed this spring. When it starts drooping outside from heat/humidity I bring it inside and it perks up. Now it looks like it's starting to bolt at the tips.. Are those the seeds? this is my first coleus attempt and I want to keep it indoors this winter. I live in a cold climate so we have short summers and long winters. This chocolate coleus would be such a joy to have inside in our cold snowy climate. This video was very helpful, thanks

    Hey Pam, great video! Do you use any grow lamps for lighting besides window lighting on any of your plants and how often do you fertilize?

    • @PamsPrettyPlants
      @PamsPrettyPlants  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey another Pam! So I currently have one of the pots of cuttings I made in this video under my new LED panels and they are SO happy, turning back to their dark red color (they’d reverted back to green and red as the summer sun went away) so that’s been a fun experiment. The others I keep in my east and south windows with curtains to cut the direct light pounding. I don’t fertilize anything in the winter, these will especially be ok because the potting mix I put them in in this video has plenty of nutrients to last them. I did a video with my winter set up (humidifiers etc) recently that might be helpful too! I hope this helps! Thanks for watching!! 💚

    I never owned plants, but I killed a few of my grandma's lol
    I thought I would never have any, unless it is a cactus or something immortal. But a few weeks ago, we went to a beautiful local botanical garden and ended up in a plant sale. There were hundreds of plants: flowers, bushes, succulents, dozens of types of cactuses, and many, many more. They were so cheap, our coffee was twice as expensive, and I live in a pretty "cheap" country.
    And there, I found a little red coleus. I was so amazed by how beautiful (and how cheap) it is, I immediately decided to buy it. So yeah, I am a proud coleus owner now. I have never had a plant as forgiving as this one. I once forgot to water it, and it was a very hot weekend, I thought it is on its verge of death. But it thrived even more after that. Signed myself off a "potential plant murderer" list.
    Planning to get more plants now!

    Thank you from Maryland for your help. My coleus is very long and leggy and I didn’t know what to do.
    I always thought that when you cut a piece off of a plant that you have to put it in water for it to grow roots. 🤔

    • @PamsPrettyPlants
      @PamsPrettyPlants  ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s one way to grow roots but you can propagate in perlite, leca, moss, or moist soil. The soil method I do on here just comes down to keeping that soil from totally drying out. It’s a little more fussy than water but I find the very fine coleus water roots don’t transplant well- in already established pots especially (where you can’t always dig down as far as a fresh pot).
      As long as the nodes has moisture, they’ll grow roots!

      I’d probably start in the fall so you can get to some that hopefully aren’t in flower. I pinch the flowers off through the summer but I always miss a bunch! I live in a tropical country but how come when i bring my coleus indoors they dropped leaves then die?

    • @PamsPrettyPlants
      @PamsPrettyPlants  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Do you do a gradual introduction to the home? I mean like the opposite of the way we harden off seedlings from indoors to the garden, bringing them out in the shade for an hour, then two hours the next day, etc. The same should be done for bringing things inside from outside. If you think about it, it’s a real change for the plant light-wise, and to the plant, that end of season reduction of light will seem the same as the seasonal reduction of light. It will behave like an annual and die. I wish I had known more about this process when I filmed this but I think it’s key to not losing all your leaves. Also do you use any kind of supplemental lighting? Even with the best care, without a light boost my coleus get leggy and sparse over winter. They live and I can rehab them in the spring, but if the goal is having a plant look great year round, you’ll need that long summer day worth of light, pinching and pruning, and I have also found the purple leaved or high variegation varieties are more fussy than my basic red one.
      Don’t give up, you’ll probably have some things that are different from me because of our different climates but if you try and keep the plant from detecting those “the season is over” signs- less light, less warmth, flowering to seed etc, it should help.
      I hope this is helpful, I’m sorry you lost that plant!

    OMG, I have a coleus that’s so tall and it has little purple buds that fall when moved! I’ve never had a coleus and I still don’t know what/how to cut it back! I’m afraid to cut down the top, it’s like it’s crown! Please tell me what I can do, if I’m doing something wrong or NOT doing something! Thank you!

    I just bought my first plant- Gay’s Delight Coleus. It’s still young. I place it in the morning sun and water it every 3 days. It’s looking a bit sad :( What do you suggest I do?

    Thanks Pam. I never brought my coleus plants in from the outside during the winter months and just started over every spring with a new breed of plants. I am so inspired by your video. My plants are HUGE. So.....come on inside my beauties!!!!

      Good luck!! Some of them take the change harder than others but I’ve found they’re quite resilient once that environment shock passes.

    New to these BeaUtiful plants and I don't know what I'm duin. My plan is to leave indoors next to a west facing window. Most of the plant is (what's the proper vernacular) standing upward, in other words, not hanging, but one little one lays over the edge. I want to propagate. I watched the video so I got an idea, but is there some meduim to use to help plant into soil or just cut and put into water in class jar and L@@k.

    I was gifted some cuttings by my partners barber a few months ago. The barber has a massive lush plant in his shop window and I was in awe! 😍 Did I know anything about it? No! Am I glad I’ve kept it in jar of water until now? Yes! I literally potted him up today as he is looking a bit worse for wear as are some of my other plants in the same room. It’s just turned spring in the UK and I’m hoping that with the correct lighting and your excellent tips I can get it thriving. Thank you so much!

    I used to grow Coleus in my bedroom as a teen..then I went years not growing indoor plants at all, we just grew plants indoor without much fuss, plants seem to be more touchy these days . Now 30 odd years later I find Coleus are getting planted outside haha. Going to try and over winter some indoors this year if I can get it out of the garden b4 it frosts ☺

The staircase project is put on hold until Trudy gives up on nocing my plants down 10' to damage my hard work -.- i need to redirect my creativity
