The demonic illustration born from the simple sketch inside the letter before it was realized to be tanks is a GENIUS piece of worldbuilding that I never see used anywhere. It reminds me of how travelers from the past would see new, unique animals during their journeys (that are very well-known to us now), and would draw or write about them to try and capture what they are for others to see, which in-turn, is how many mythological creatures were born from these depictions. Also tanks with legs and the heads of saints are just INCREDIBLY cool in general, it's easy to see how they could be mistaken as demons (which is VERY ironic considering the demon/saint contrast)

yes i love that aspect of misunderstanding and miscommunication. i wanna play around more with what perspective we hear about things from and how that changes the feeling we have about a concept.

This is literally how Unicorns got into the Bible! They were talking about rhinos, of course, but painters heard “untamable beast” and the most untamable beast they knew of were probably stallions so they just slapped the horn on one.

Idea for the how and why of the legs: Make them spring-loaded with huge springs inside most of the leg and add a girthy chain between the "foot" and a crank shaft of sorts that runs underneath the chassis and has off-center mountings for the end of the chain which tension the springs to bend the leg and then release to have it unfold into a mighty step, which might even give rise to more interpretations since it will be "kicking" the ground swiftly to move instead of actually stepping like anthing living would.
The workings of sewing machines might give you some idea on the crank shaft design too, since the yarn can't just be coiling up on itself - as the chain shouldn't too. Or, a bit easier, gears with tilted teeth that slowly increase the tension on the chain in one direction until a bolt gets released and the springs do their thing. This would be easier to incorporate into a closed chassis as only the chains would be leading out again and even a low rpm motor can pull it tight. :)

a game you might be able to take some inspiration from is The Forever Winter, it's an extraction shooter (not released yet but beta is soon) where you play as a scav in the middle of a war and the war has progressed to a point where both man and machine are blended as one, where war machines are seen as deities and prayed to, stealth bombers drop zombie soldiers from the sky. It's a cool concept, i know it's set in a different time period but there still may be some inspiration

    Great video!
What do you think about this idea about the Ram underground cathedrals?
The idea is having a huge tricone driller under the cathedral (it would give the cathedral an ominous and crude look) that makes the digging and drilling.
In order to remove the detritals generated by the drilling, a dense fluid needs to be pumped down from above through pipes (it also gives an industrial and crude vibe) that go through the cathedral. The fluid removes the detrital from the bottom of the tricone, and then it goes up on the sides (through the space between the wall of the hole and the tricone-cathedral) of the hole carrying away the detritus.
Also, as the hole is very deep, it needs to be stabilized with walls. In order to construct such walls in a hole full of that dense fluid with a lot of currents, swimming creatures need to be created that are called the "wallers" or maby it is special sorcerers with underwater masks and oxygen tubes (they may infuse the dense fluid with mana and control it).
If the drilling was abandoned, maby there are still waller-creatures roaming around in the depths near the tricone and inside the pipes of the cathedral, waiting for prey
Ive done some drawings of these ideas for Ram in discord

Drawing something that makes you or others say "hell yeah" is way more fun, and makes the world a slighly more interesting place to live in than a drawing that is very, very, accurate, but also very dull.

I think you'd need a clutch for each leg, that you activate and deactivate to steer and maneuver, but there's still one central shaft powering them all. That could be why there's a spot for crew above each tank- so they can manually work the clutches on each leg pair if the linkages break.

theres a period-possible way to actuate those legs i can suggest.
early diesel style engine powers a large air compressor. that compressed air is then fed to a series of pneumatic actuators, essentially inflatable balloons inside a woven outer sleeve. when inflated, the balloon cannot escape the sleeve, snd so expands it while shortening it, like a muscle. through clockwork and linkages, valves are turned to expand and contract each "muscle" within various parts of the leg, moving it against its own armored exoskeleton.
it would give it an eerie, organic cadence to its movement. probably contribute to the demon rumors.

I see the side machine guns have an odd crew placement in your internal sketch, but in the final drawing the side emplacements jut away from the legs a bit, so Maybe try this: those machine gun emplacements on the sides are actually separate compartments from the rest of the tank, and are only accessible by external hatches (No access from within the tank) this odd design feature could be a quirk of its early and rudimentary design. The emplacements are there because the cannon can’t see enemy infantry if they are at the sides of the tank, so in order to close the blind spot the machine gunners were placed there. The machine gunners would complain incessantly about the poor placement, lots of rocking and vibrating making it almost impossible to shoot anything besides point blank, and they have high mortality rates due to their large gun ports being close enough to the ground for enemy infantry to throw a bomb in. Overall a clunky design feature that barely serves its purpose well enough to be kept on the tank, like many, many early tank examples we have irl.

I absolutely adore these designs. Have you ever considered turning this whole world building exercise into a tabletop wargame, similar to how Mike Franchina did with his art and Trench Crusade? I think it would be amazing to be able to realise the art as 3d models

    • @monlenz
      @monlenz  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I'd love to make miniatures for the world. I'm planing to already but I'm not sure about a war game. My world mainly has 2 sides and I feel that's quite limiting for a war game where you want people to have lots of choice.

    • @ManglingMinis
      @ManglingMinis 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@monlenz not limiting at all if you know what you're doing! You have two main factions fighting against each other, but I'm sure within them you have many sub-factions. It's these sub-factions that could allow for lots of variety of gameplay. And you could easily have a bit of infighting or training be a reason why two sub-factions might do battle against each other.
Either way, I'm excited to see models! Your art is fantastic and inspiring

The tank legs could be organic, like those science experiments that eletrocute dead frogs to activate their muscles but with a larger animal and mass produced to fot the demands of war.
Or maybe it could simply mimic muscles like in battletech, where the mechs work by using an artificial 'muscle' made of metal alloys.
Either of these could work and it wouldnt be a big strech. After all mages and pillar men already use a lot of body modification so it wouldnt be a big strech to see people use that knowledge and apply it to their warmachines

I like that you changed the cannon to a flamethrower. Makes more sense in the cramped turret and with muzzle-loaded guns being used everywhere else. Also I can totally see this thing in warhammer, Fantasy or 40k. The spider-demon illustration was an excellent bit of worldbuilding

Ok that is just bonkers. I really love the drwaings you made with the crew inside to figure out how it works and all. I love the design it’s amazing. I would play a wargame in this universe without a second thought. I am not asking anything lol it’s just praise ^.^ but if you want to make a tank figurine I mean…

Aah the strandbeest, the gold-mine for fantasy authors for when they want a unique and fantastical feeling machine. Glad to see the chunky ones being chosen for the tank, its fitting offcourse, the thick and angular shapes make it look strong and "elephantine" that tank design is wounderful.

The sages tell us thus about the tanks our fathers crafted:
Nails filed, and from bronze minted
Clawing earth they gleamed and glinted
    Holds entombed the shapen dust
Safeguarding souls like that it lost
A cannon from its mustached mouth
Observes the kingdom in the south
If any out of line had stepped
Their friends and neighbors promptly wept

There is this crazy comic (I'm not sure if it's still being written/published) where the armies of hell were fighting the armies of heaven and the angels used bombs and other weapons with pieces of dead saints inside them because they caused more damage the armies of hell (who were vampires and zombies). I don't remember the name of the comic, I think it was french.

You could make the legs (just blocks really) in blender, bend them as you wish, move Tha camera to fit your drawing idea and export it. then draw the rest of it on top. It will save you so much time.
