My wife's family is from Luhansk, and this conflict has been brewing for years. Years before this video since 2004. Ukraine should have seen it coming. Firstly, Ukraine refused to pay pensions from the USSR era, leaving many feeling cheated. Russia stepped in to fill the gap, gaining popularity and affection from the locals. Secondly, Ukraine accidentally bombed a few homes, which Russian media seized upon. Thirdly, Luhansk residents faced difficulties obtaining Ukrainian passports, leading Russia to offer Russian citizenship instead. Ukraine failed Luhansk, and as a result, many residents have a strong love for Russia.

A fair argument. But you know that there are always two sides of the story. I worked for a few years in Moscow and know several people who moved from Donetsk to Russia. They prefer the way of life in Russia because it matches their own culture and beliefs. I also know a family who moved from Donbass region to the UK because they felt that it would be better for them. So, there are two sides to this. Neither of them are wrong. The problem is trying to make this whole situation black and white. The worst thing anyone can do is make the people of this region out to be stupdi or bad because they prefer relations with Russia and not the West. Part of the initial problem was that Kiev simply ignored the people of the East (most of whom actually supported Yanukovych). Of course, Kiev had their own problems to deal with, but the people of the East, who had just lost seen the President they democratically elected thrown out of office in a revolution, were obviously not happy with things. They felt closer to Russia, whereas those in the West felt closer to Europe. Now, everything has gone to hell, and these assholes in the DNR are trying to exasperate something the Kiev government could have stopped had they acted much sooner and actually listened to the concerns of half of their population. No, Ratnik wasn't given to any other country, but that doesn't really matter. I have a full set as a private collector, it's not exactly hard to get, and the earlier sets are even easier to source. In the later parts of the video, you see one of the DNR fighters in multicam - did he get given that by Russia?That being said, Russia is definitely giving them equipment. The question is not if, it's how much and what kind. For example there was a set of tanks showing up in the DNR that were demonstrably taken from Ukrainian army storage on the Crimean peninsula, meaning someone had to have driven them through the Russian Federation or floated them across the straits on a barge.

One thing to note... That did not sound like incoming fire. With incoming fire you hear a sharp sound of the bullet crack, and then a dull thud from the rifle that is some distance away. That sounded like someone firing rifles close to them... most likely the same DNR members somewhere further down the trench.

You are forgetting another actor that played in the separation of Korea, namely the US. Same with Ukraine. There was a lot of meddling with the Euromaidan with the installation of far-right politicians in the parliament which in turn made the eastern region want to separate due to the difference in ideology and view of Russia. Making the analogy with North-Korea is very inaccurate because of the historical ties between Ukraine and Russia differs by a lot. Due to past historical and cultural ties, these two nations are practically inseparable. The real separatists are in fact those who are in the Ukrainian parliament right now and the people of Donetsk are actually those who want to maintain the bond.

Ukraine doesn't have modern Russian military gear, only the leftovers from the Soviet union and some other equipment. There's a video on youtube, where a seperatist is equipped with FULL Russian combat gear, shooting a granade launcher at Ukrainian troops. (I think it was a battle of Debaltseve)
No, Ratnik wasn't given to any other country, but that doesn't really matter. I have a full set as a private collector, it's not exactly hard to get, and the earlier sets are even easier to source. In the later parts of the video, you see one of the DNR fighters in multicam - did he get given that by Russia?That being said, Russia is definitely giving them equipment. The question is not if, it's how much and what kind. For example there was a set of tanks showing up in the DNR that were demonstrably taken from Ukrainian army storage on the Crimean peninsula, meaning someone had to have driven them through the Russian Federation or floated them across the straits on a barge.

So far I've seen very little of that. Seems what the Ukrainian government side says is accepted as fact.

With incoming fire you hear a sharp sound of the bullet crack, and then a dull thud from the rifle that is some distance away.

Well "international monitors report most violations comes from DNR" not according to OSCE reports which are publicly available. And the last skirmish was on the positions held by DNR, how can they be attacking the Ukrainian armed forces positions but all the fighting is taking on the DNR positions?

The same two logic reasons for taking Crimea, it being majority ethnic Russian, and being apart of Russia before 1954, do not apply to the Donbass region, where Luhansk and Donetsk are majority ethnic Ukrainian and never belonged to Russia, I fear it is only because Ukraine is looking to the West, and NATO and the EU, and not to Russia, and Russia does not want to lose its influence. It did the same thing in Georgia, and Moldova who are also looking to the West, Russia is a crybaby, who wants to tell the little countries what it can and can't do.
EDIT: Russia is also propping up Transnistria, a separatist state in Moldova, and South Ossetia and Abkhazia in Georgia. Ukraine, Moldova, and Georgia are all looking to the West, NATO and the EU, and Russia is being a bully because they don't want to lose control of what they once controlled.

You are forgetting another actor that played in the separation of Korea, namely the US. Same with Ukraine. There was a lot of meddling with the Euromaidan with the installation of far-right politicians in the parliament which in turn made the eastern region want to separate due to the difference in ideology and view of Russia. Making the analogy with North-Korea is very inaccurate because of the historical ties between Ukraine and Russia differs by a lot. Due to past historical and cultural ties, these two nations are practically inseparable. The real separatists are in fact those who are in the Ukrainian parliament right now and the people of Donetsk are actually those who want to maintain the bond.

As I said way back then their business model with Vice News on youtube was not working, online advertising doesn't pay close to enough to have that kind of quality shows, even for well known media that usually get way better deals. They ended up selling the show to HBO. .

Truly shows which side one should "root for" in this conflict. On one hand, VICE is allowed to freely interview people in Ukraine - but in Donetsk they are only allowed to interview a select few.
Thete are many independant journalists on the ground in these places who are not biased.

I subscribed to Vice to hear more about the conflict. They've had their group on DNR side, which was moving there freely.
