With the Ukrainian army struggling to contain the grab for power by the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) in the Donetsk Oblast, armed pro-Ukrainian militias have been quietly taking matters into their own hands.
One of these groups, the Donbas Battalion, has been attacking DPR checkpoints and occupied buildings. After two weeks of careful negotiations they finally agreed for VICE News to visit their clandestine base in what used to be a children's summer camp in the neighboring Dnipropetrovsk region. They were cautious about revealing their location as their last HQ was discovered and attacked by pro-Russia forces, forcing them to find an alternative.
We watched them train and interviewed their leader, Semyan, before being invited on an operation the following day. In the town of Velyka Novosilka, the Donbas Battalion tore down the DPR flag and replaced it with Ukraine's colors, reinstalled the pro-Ukrainian administrator, and lectured the local police on loyalty and duty - all at gunpoint. We then left Velyka Novosilka quickly, as there were reports of armed pro-Russia groups heading our way.
The Ukrainian army's "anti-terror" operation has so far failed to dislodge separatists from their strongholds in Sloviansk and Donetsk. But the flexibility of the Donbas Battalion, and other groups like it, could help turn the tide in Kiev's favor. Equally, they could help further destabilize an already volatile region. Yet with the Ukrainian presidential elections taking place on May 25, it's likely that Semyan and his men will be busy in the days ahead - and we'll soon find out.

+Devin Gutierrez There was no rule of law there at all - it was essentially a civil war situation so who did and did not have guns was pretty moot. There are more guns floating around in Eastern Europe though, in Western Europe gun laws are VERY strict (in the UK its virtually impossible to own a gun, and only a shotgun IF you own land, are well off, know a local judge or police officers, have a wall safe etc.).

When the war in Donbas broke out It didn’t get a lot of attention, even before Crimea and the euro maiden, it only really got attention after MH17,
Long story short Ukraine wanted Viktor Yanukovych out of office, and then the riots happened, Russia invades Crimea, Donetsk and the Luhansk regions wanted to be independent and started taking over government buildings and arming themselves, then the first skirmishes happened with the donbass battalion and I think the national guard, the skirmishes became proper battles Russia started supplying the separatists and then helped them with taking Iloviask and Debaltseve, and the war pretty much just became trench warfare with shelling and shooting at the enemy lines, until now when Russia invaded Ukraine.

Azov has been shelling, raping and killing over 14.000 native Russians in the east of Ukraine for over 8 years.
They were a huge part of Maidan protests, even BEFORE Crimea voted for independence.
(You can guess why they did that, 87% of Crimea are Russians, that are terrified of Azov)

Thats because Vice show it that way. When they go to Ukrainians they film with prior permission, while they go to the pro-Russians they don't bother to ask and film provocatively to cause a reaction. Its an old trick for journalists to portray one side as evil. Thats what vice is trying to do, show the pro-Russian guys as the bad guys, if vice were unbiased they would show that both sides are evil really.
They're filming public places, why would you need to ask for permission to film what's happening and what the thugs are doing? Who gave them the permission to go around waving with guns and claiming control, taking over buildings and ordering not to film? They boast about democracy, yet they ignore the core principals and are as far away from democracy as it's possible. Stop deluding yourself, people who have nothing to hide are not afraid of cameras, these scum on the other hand are criminals and they don't want to be seen.
Aaidas2 Try to go near a US base in Afghanistan and start filming without permission, you will be lucky if you get away with just a warning shot. You can't film in a war zone wherever and whenever you want. How do they know you are not just an enemy scout who is filming their position and locations the passing it on to their opponents? You have no idea what real warzones are like, its nothing like in the movies or computer games.

The USA is also a guarantee of this integrity among other countries, thus the reason the USA is involved in Ukraine right now. Russia is currently breaking it's agreement while the USA is upholding theirs.
