      Coming from a tropical country with high humidity I've stopped using creams, lotions or moisturizer since oils or esters can clog some pores and you wake up to an angry pimple. Keep it simple. Just a lightweight antioxidant serum and sunscreen. A good idea is skincare in the form of dry powder or clays to absorb the excess oil and sweat. Avoid hyaluronic acid since it absorbs so much moisture to the skin surface that you'll look like you just ran a marathon. I hope this helps. :)

    A few more tips from another disco ball:
    1. Blotting paper.
    It's better to pick up excess oil with a tissue (blotting paper or a single layer of toilet paper/tissue) than add powder to an oily face. If you just powder, you will end up looking cakey. Blot first, then reapply powder if needed. If is also healthier for the skin to have a lighter makeup and touch up during the day than to make a heavy duty makeup every day. Safe them for special occasions.
    2. Experiment with powder and fixing sprays.
    If you do not want to use (a lot of) powder, have a look at fixing sprays (I can recommend Skindinavia or Urban Decay All Nighter). Experiment with the layers. The Wayne Goss method (powder under foundation) does not work for me, I always end up with messed up base. But a spritz of a fixing spray as a primer does wonders. You can try either of them underneath the foundation, or on top of it. Or one under, one on top. Or both under, or both on top. Try it out and see what works.
    Same for powders: have a look at several "oil controlling" powders. Your best friend may be starch, it may be bamboo or rice powder, or clay in the ingredient list. You may also like a mix of two powders, so have fun.
    3. Experiment with your actives, both concentration and what with what.
    For me, niacynamide only works in the 10% concentration, and when used at the same time as BHA. I see much better results when I use them together twice a week, than separately. Using it on the same night with BHA also gives me better results than using it with retinols.
    4. Skip moisturizer in the morning, if you are using an SPF product. It likely has already enough hydration for your needs.
    5. It is OK to use "moisturizing serums" as face creams, or to get your hydration from toners.
    You need a hydration step in your routine, but it doesn't have to be a cream. Also, have a look at water creams, you may find your holy grail there.
    6. Be aware of the fact that oil may change the appearance of pigments in your makeup.
    What is a colour match in the morning, may be a terrible orange or too dark mess by noon, if your makeup is prone to oxidation in oily environment.
    7. You will likely not like cream bronzers and blushers, as they tend to be less durable on oily skin and disappear within a couple of hours.
    8. Do not forget that even if you are truly oily, the skin around your eyes is always more delicate and less oily.
    You may actually be the only skin type that needs a different eye cream. I have a light water cream for my face, and a more occlusive cream for my eyes and neck.
    9. Beside clay masks, alginate peel-off masks can be a great addition to skincare routine too.
    They are a powder that is mixed with water and then it dries out to a rubber-like consistency, therefore "peel-off". It is a hydration and oil-control in one, and it visually shrinks off pores too, so a great combo.
    10. Do not neglect AHAs when you use BHA. Exfoliation is your great friend.
    You may also like them in your body wash (e.g. the one by Some by mi).
    11. Double cleanse with an oil cleanser, and spend some time with massaging the oil cleanser into your face. Oil dissolves oil, and warmth from the massage will loosen up the sebum stuck in your pores and help to clean it out. Every now and then do a proper 10-15 minutes oil massage (as recommended by Nay from LaBeautilogist) to loosen up all of the thick and greasy sebum from your pores.
    12. Experiment with dry face oils. Many people swear e.g. by jojoba. Using more linoleic oils than your sebum may make your face less active with its oils. My face used to love the normalising oil from Manuka Doctor. Not it doesn't work any more, sadly.
    13. Try sulphur, especially in your cleansing step. You will likely find sulphur bars or cleansers in the pharmacy.
    14. Observe if anything triggers your oils more than other things.
    Maybe a specific ingredient makes you especially oily? Or over-hydrating/not hydrating enough? How about your diet? Are you more oily when you eat more dairy, or chocolate, or spicy food?
    15. In the summer, consider using a blocker antiperspirant on your face (if you find one that is safe to use on the face). Dealing with oil and sweat at the same time is too much for most cosmetics, and for you likely as well.

    One thing I’ve come to realize recently is that being oily means my skin just naturally has the characteristics that dewy makeup and ‘glass skin’ go for.
    Sure this is mostly psychological, but now when I see my face oily instead of thinking “ugh so shiny” & like I need to fix it, I kinda just smile & tell myself I look like a glazed donut I’m so glowy.

    What I found works best for me (who has an extremely oily T-zone), after more than 10 years of experimenting, is just straight up ignoring that I have oily skin. I do use BHA, Niacinamide and Retinol (for different reasons though) and that definitely helps. But other than that I don't use any product that is targeted towards oily skin. I use lightweight moisturizers in the summer and heavier ones in the winter, I sometimes use oils in the evening, and I use cream cleansers all year round. My sunscreen is lightweight, but not "mattifying" or anything like that. All of this helps to slow down the purging of oil throughout the day and when it does occur, I just tap my nose and forehead with blotting paper and that's it. It's really not a big deal.

  • @ShesEvil

    6:19 iirc salicylic acid is great for various types of acne including fungal acne. However for anyone reading this who would be concerned with this-it stunts the growth of facial hair (so unless it’s from a dr-in which case talk to them first!-and you seem to have trouble with things like your beard connecting or your facial hair being really patchy, you could try lowering your usage of it or cut it out). I get the facial Jaír concern is pretty niche but idk who’s gonna read this so 🤷‍♂️

And I didn't use moisturizer. When I found out that not using moisturizer and using all that harsh stuff just threw my skin out of whack and made it oilier. so i'm not the only oily person who prefers dewy/hydrating bases! i also find that the less i layer, the better my skin looks -- so no matter the foundation i choose, that's /all/ i go in with. i don't like powdering my base, either, because it's like you described: as soon as my natural oils start seeping through, i look like a melted candle. i may have to blot once or twice throughout the day with my current base routine (which i've loosely stuck to for the last two years) but in general it's so much easier to manage my skin!

    Sometimes excess oil production can be caused by cortisol (stress hormone). I have insane levels with dysautonomia, so I drink really strong green tea (ECGC binds to cortisol molecules and inactivates it).
    If I drink green tea before I fall asleep I wake up with normal skin. If I forget I wake up with oily sweat and have to shower (cortisol spikes in the morning).
    I also use it as a toner, since topically applied green tea reduces sebum, along with fermented rice water and I feel it makes a difference to oil, plots strengthens the skin barrier and had heaps of antioxidants. And it's virtually free 🥰

    9:49 I think this is a tip from Robert Welsh? But basically you def want moisturizer stuff on before makeup to create a barrier between skin and makeup but what he said was to put a bunch of face lotion on, let it set like 2-3 min, then wipe it off. Your skin will soak up what it needs and gently wiping off the excess with a tissue will take care of anything visible that could mess with your makeup.

I wish for a oily hair/scalp guide too 😊 I tried washing my hair less and with less harsh ingredients and get used to less shampooing but it never worked on me. I heard that doesn’t do the trick if you have hormonal oily scalp, only for those who previously washed their normal to dry hair/scalp too much and created oiliness that way, is that true? I just walked around looking like I never showered even if I wash my hair twice a week, which didn’t make a good impression on people 😔.. I guess for some skin problems medication is the only way to go?

    Hi Michelle, I'm a 59-year old male of color with acne-prone, extremely oily skin. No matter what I try (even the products my dermatologist recommends) to help reduce the oil and shine, nothing works. I'm particulary interested in getting a gel moisturizer and a LIGHTWEIGHT sunscreen that is mattyfying. Please help! Thanks!

    I'd probably have nice skin if I could afford better skincare. Only items I have is spf, the ordinary salicylic acid(does nothing for me)and missha mugwort essence. I wish I could get rid of the sebaceous filaments on my nose but nothing seems to work

    Hi, thanks for this video! Super informative as always. I don't know if you read the comments, but can I ask what you mean when you say that some vitamin A derivatives "reshape" the ducts that sebum comes out of and thereby cut down on oil pooling on the face? I've heard about tretinoin "normalizing" sebum output before, but never quite understood it.

    I am curios if a setting spray is good for oily skin and whether it can help sunscreen stay on longer for people that dont wear foundation?

    • @LabMuffinBeautyScience
      @LabMuffinBeautyScience  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not sure, and I would guess it depends a lot on the specific components in the sunscreen base, as well as the polymers and solvent in the setting spray. As far as I know there hasn't been a study on that!

    Didn't mention diet at all. Removing processed foods from my diet as well as sugar is truly the only thing that reduces my oil production. Plus good sleep. Bad sleep = wake up with a lake of oil on my face.

    Dr. Wong, thank you for this video! Would a baby wash make the cut for a gentle cleanser for adult facial skin, or should I steer away from those? (For safety or efficacy reasons?) Unfortunately, nothing I do (gentle cleanser, bha, niacinamide, moisturizing at night, hydrating serum or toners, green tea, adapalene) seems to combat my oiliness 😫

    Both my T-zone and U-zone are oily, I experience more hormonal breakouts on my U-zone as my jawline. I am also dehydrated, especially in winter season, I been using the ROVECTIN - Skin Essentials Conditioning Cleanser, as my gentle cleanser A.M & PM but this feels like it over dries my skin and it does not feel clean, its a priority for me to use Cruelty free products, I dont know what to do, the outdoor tempeture atm -2C to -6C but still 7%-70% humidity depending on the day, I feel like as soon as I use any product my skin becomes super oily, but if i don't use it it becomes super dehydrated and flaky, I'm going insane.

    Is using the term "dehydrated" skin really scientific for instances other than actually being dehydrated?
    A lot of other influencers like saying "your skin is oily because it's too dry" to everyone and it basically seems against basic skin biology. Is there any proper evidence that people with oily skin have oily skin because they're dry?

    • @LabMuffinBeautyScience
      @LabMuffinBeautyScience  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You can measure skin hydration with a corneometer, and it has little relation to systemic dehydration. Generally "dehydrated" refers to low water level and "dry" refers to low oil level, so "oily but dry" doesn't really make sense but it's a commonly used description for oily but dehydrated.

      Great question because I heard from a dermatologist that the skin type started as a marketing tool for some legacy brand (maybe estee lauder?) to sell more products and that skin type changes can be due to environmental or hormonal changes.

    • @LabMuffinBeautyScience
      @LabMuffinBeautyScience  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Skin type/oil production generally doesn't change dramatically, and skincare products are unlikely to actually change your skin type, but I think it's still a useful concept for working out what's likely to work well with your skin- Dr Leslie Baumann is one of the most respected cosmetic dermatologists (her Cosmetic Dermatology textbook is the best one in mine and a lot of other people's opinions), and dry/oily is one of the dichotomies in her skin type system.
