Is it just me that always assumed that the line she says "he wore long sleeves cuz of his dad" meant he was hiding his self-harm provoked by the way his dad made him feel or am I reading way too much into it and drawing back from my own experience?

For me, I think the boy is gay but since his parents cared more about the bible (being religious) the dad can’t accept it so he physically abuse him, hence with the “he worr long sleeves cause of his dad”
Yeah, it's totally about self-harm but it's still interesting to see how different people understand it!
The song is about the LGBTIQ+ community, it tells the story of various persons who Olivia met thoughout her life and hope they are now happier than before, the album talks a lot of things this generation is going though, not just the LGBT kids, but adolescence insecurities, stupidity and hard things we have to face, so i apreciate it so much.
Also i think the long sleeves are to cover scars, cause the kid was hurting himself, cause religious parents won't accept his sexuality.
And i love the line "Adress the letters to the holes on my butterfly wings", Olivia said the butterflies im the album meant growth and becoming an adult, so even though her wings are damaged and she can't fly, she's still helping and guiding so many kids with her lyrics.
I'm so happy that you also understand the meaning behind this wonderful song.
The "long sleeve" part really just hits me
i thought the dad was abusive and that's why he wears long sleeves. Maybe to cover up bruises or something? I'm just wondering since it said "he wore long sleeves cuz of his dad" and then it mentions how the parent's care more about the bible than him. Idk, just a thought.
@@confusiyeon I think it's cause the dad is homophobic the most and that's why she mentions him that line, whatever it is it really hits me hard.
I said this in another reply thread. Its not just about the LGBTQ+ community. And she also said we can leave it up for interpretation. So we dont know why he wore long sleeves. We dont know why her parents hated who she loved. But I can tell you there are more meanings to this then just them being of the LGBTQ community
As a 27 year old gay man, this song brought me to tears. Not just the nostalgia of wondering how the friends I had in school are doing now, and hoping they’ve made it out of the craziest years in tact, or the resonating details of the stories, but the things she says in this song are things we all need to hear. “Well, I hope you know how proud I am you were created” has to be my favorite line in the entire song. When you struggle through life, with your family, with the people around you, with yourself, and you’ve done everything within your power to deal with it all as healthy as possible - it’s so important to hear someone just say that they’re proud of you. The value of just being seen, acknowledged, and encouraged for your efforts can be such a strong driving-force to continue fighting. It felt as if someone finally told me, “Hey, I’ve seen how far you’ve come. I’m so fucking proud.”, and that felt amazing.
If you’re reading this, continue fighting. Whatever that battle is, keep going. You’re growing in strength and courage. I’m proud of you. We all are. 💛
This is the last song on her album, and I like to think of it as a love story to her friends, and maybe, a message to reach out to your friends that you haven't heard from for a while and make sure they're ok, and tell them... I love you.

This song is very similar to Conan Gray’s “The Story” .. yall should check it out too!
I 100% think this song was written to describe what LGBTQ+ kids go through. From them hurting themselves that they cover it with a long sleeve. Their parents caring more about Bible and don't realize the damage it is causing the child. Also when your parents won't like the person u love. One of my favorite line from the song is " She was tired cause she was brought into a world where family was merely blood" Many kids get disowned or kicked out of their house and rejected by their parents when they come out. Those kids feel like onlt thing they connected to family is theough blood. Family is suppose to be supportive and loving.
