  • Using Tesla’s Autopilot in the Model 3 on UK Motorways, is it any good? Comparing the differences between the FREE autopilot you get with every Model 3 in the UK, verses Tesla’s Full Self Drive (FSD) option you can add-on.
Do you have FSD in your Model 3? Would you buy FSD even with the limitations here in the UK?

Hello. I too have the Tesla model 3 performance and a few weeks ago added the FSD add on. I use the self park and remote parking as I live in Brighton where spaces are super tight. I bought because of this and I am only seeing the cost of the feature go up, so I thought what else will come along and it will get more expensive. Quite happy with it although £5k hmmm less happy about that

I have the auto drive on my latest VW . It will only allow you hands off the wheel for 30 seconds before chiming at you to replace a hand back on the wheel. It also has self park which I have used a grand total of once since getting the car, not worth it in my case. I had an 18 plate 7 series that could be parked from outside the car , used it once!
Next step for Tesla needs to be styling and interior rethink. I love them but find having all controls plus speed on one screen a massive distraction. Central Speedo and intuitive controls for heating etc with a nice sculpted touch screen in the centre console. That would be perfect.

    • @SpawnPoiint
      @SpawnPoiint  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Thanks for the comment. I don’t find the screen a distraction at all, if anything it’s better as I don’t even make an effort to use it while driving. I just use voice command instead (music, Seats, calls etc).

But its slow and you have to confirm and press buttons ...etc. Techno faff! -its just a whole lot easier to park it myself. It concerns me that there are people out there who have a need for it or rely on it.

I have no issue driving at 70 and I’ve not noticed much difference in efficiency. For this video I was demonstrating the autopilot, so it’s sticking to 60 due to other cars on the road slowing me down.

When you where talking about summon you didn't mention that (I believe this is still true) it's less worthwhile in UK & EU coz the range is limited to like 2 meters or summin!
I'm weighing up if I can afford a Tesla this year and for me crippled summon and partial automatic navigation drive (motorways only) it's a no brained to save £6k!
I noticed at one point you had someone on the inside lane, quite close. How does autopilot handle if that guy indicated to pull out? I'd also be interested to know what FSD does but you might not know.
Also does autopilot allow you to undertake (illegal I'm UK) if the outside lane is a bit slower than your lane?

    • @smc812

Blatant UK it’s 6m, but seems a bit variable. It’s useful to drive your car in and out of spaces, garages, on a drive etc. What we don’t get yet is calling your car from across a car park. If you look at the videos from the US it can be a bit dodgy at the moment

Well I am in the US and I will only use Basic Auto Pilot. I don't do Freeways and Basic Auto Pilot will navigate any marked road and stay in the single lane. Just won't obey and stop sign or stop light intersections. Only FSD will do that.
Being 2023, FSD costs 15,000 dollars and EAP costs 6,000 dollars in the US. Both are nice, but I really can't justify of need for these.
Really nice technology, but always be alert and ready to take back control. There are warnings if the front camera sees that you are not paying attention or periodically touching the steering wheel. The car will not completely drive itself at this time.

Eventually insurance companies will accept overall casualty rates on an automous network are lower and will negate the risk. So I would love something like a model 3 that I can enjoy driving on the twisties but let drive itself on the motorways. The reason for the single screen controlling everything is Elon Musk's obsession that autonomy will become the norm and nobody will want to drive anywhere, anytime. Maybe he just doesn't enjoy driving and therefore assumes nobody else does - wrongly! I think they should at least introduce a HUD for those of us that still like to drive 'manually'.

Remember that Tesla are offering full autopilot at what should be considered a cheap price because it is still not in any way complete at the moment... and probably for a year or so in the uk. BUT once it is more usable the upgrade cost will climb. In other words you are paying less for a feature that will improve and improve until it actually functions well enough to be autonomous. Once full autopilot is working to level 5 your Tesla can go off and earn you money whilst you are at work not using it ££££

V8burble good luck thinking a tesla or any other vehicle will drive itself around. Unfortunately there is a real world in which it would need to operate and real time/world decisions it would have to make, which humans are much much better at. One cardboard box in the roadway could cause your car to never come home. And the safety issues are not as easily overcome as you might expect and may never be on any roads that have pedestrian access. Computers and AI are much better at making straightforward calculations and decisions but once things get complicated and novel the human brain is heads and shoulders better.

To tell the truth Tesla’s Autopilot is neither auto nor a pilot. It is just a huge hassle when changing lanes on a busy motorway you are better switching it off and in fact it’s greatest benefit is in a stop go traffic jam when the car virtually handles the hassle by truly driving itself. My beef is when driving on a motor way with Tesla’s ‘free’ autopilot the operations you require to carry out a simple lane change IS MORE STRESSFUL THAN DRIVING WITHOUT IT. To disguise the lane change feature’s removal from the model 3 Tesla used the smoke and mirrors to create an ‘autopilot’ where there wasn’t one. The Model 3 driving experience was better and SAFER without it.

It really has to be said...what an ugly and "blah" interior. For the price paid it really should be better.
