super helpful! I will be going from the terminator X to the dominator here in a few years with a new engine setup. good to know I can use the same harness etc
I bought one of the last foxbody kits, terminator x. Haven't installed it yet. Just put a junkyard 5.0 engine back in it and gonna try to start it on factory ecu to make sure it's all good before I go into putting the terminator in.

I have a 1997 GMC K1500 pickup with extended cab and 4 wheel drive that I have replaced the stock 350 cu.in. engine with a 383 stroker, but the shop that did the engine install doesn't appear to have the skills or knowledge to further modify it, and running with the stock intake and spider injection system is not meeting my expectations from this engine. I don't want a high rpm screamer, but instead, since it's a truck, I want as much low rpm torque as I can get, which is why I asked for a mild RV style camshaft. Interesting, as i was reccomended the hP for Offroad due to the vibration etc. I’m adding a Lsa, but would really like to see all of the features hp/dominator has to offer. I need the ecu to control the engine only as I have a manual valve body.
I’m looking at the terminator x max stealth Since I’m running a carb intake with a hat. I will keep the boost low but also needed the trans control for the 4l80e. I didn’t really see too big a price difference.
Building a LS for a Jeep/Rock Crawler... Also using the dual throttle body Edelbrock which means I am going to have to use a Dominator. But I also want to use a 6L90e... Terminator X Max now has the option of running the 6L80/90 yet as far as I can tell, the Domimator still can not run those transmissions...?
X-Max enjoyer here...have you seen any type of waterproof case for the ecu? I only have room to mount it in the engine bay and ran into a problem on power tour where water ran off the hood and onto the ecu and it's pretty much useless until it dries out. i solved it by duct taping the seams for the moment, but that even feels sketchy for me. i'm half a mind to open the case and pot it.
Hey joe i have a question. Do you know why a holley terminator x ecu will only crank an not give any spark or fuel? It wont pick up any rpm signal at all. Im starting to get concerned that the ecu is toast.
It seems like since they have done the work to make the wizard they should offer it for the dominator so you can move it around and have it say you still need a tune and limit it to like 3000 rpm
Thanks for the info bro, I was looking at the 550 EFI for a first time buyer for my C6 Z06. I can pair this with the 6.86" or 7" dash as well correct? EDIT: Corrected the dashes do work on them lol sorry I forgot to rewind to that part.
I'm doing a hemi swap 5.7 or 6.1 I just want it to run the motor and tranny and be able to tune when I change the cam to be able to get the most power thanks
I got a terminator X mainly bc I can't tune shit with a laptop. I just wanted the thing to tune itself well enough to drive to shows and scoot on the highway.
I'd really like to see a sniper video I want to put fuel injection on a 1963 chevy 292 inline 6. Sequential injection won't work because it's siamese port intake
Would I terminator be fine for a booster 302 running 93? Not racing the truck might make a pass or two but the transmission is a limiting factor for me at the moment, or should I go to a hp/dominator ecu
I’m guessing the next video your going to make is the up’s & down’s of the Holley Expansion Module, you tapped on the subject but only just a tap and I’m interested in knowing what you down side of using one with a terminator x since I’ve had one for awhile now. Another thing is the in your connectability of the Holley dash to the terminator x e.a the button and input/output situation
I’m running the Terminator X because I’m poor and running high impedance injectors. However I did ditch the poverty 3.5” display for a 7” Holley display 🧐🎩
Really all of the ECU's besides the Dominator need just a few more inputs Honestly I think a big help would be allowing some of the trans or DBW i/o stuff on the X max to be reconfigured for something else. I'm going X max with I/O expanders on both of my cars and will likely change over to Dominator later when I start adding all the extra features later. Only reason I'm not going regular term X is the trans control is needed. I also think if they made the HP have dual O2's and either trans or DBW control, but not both, that would help it out tons and give many people exactly what they want/need without jumping to the dominator.
Hi Joe, on your opening screens at 13 seconds you show a clip of what appears is a 3.5 screen with an rpm shift type indicator display on it? What ecu or software is that? Can you get that type of display on any of the 3.5's.
Do you think the dominator would be capable of running air suspension control? The current level/height sensors are a 0-5v sweeping pot. Already looking at a xmax for the trans control (6.0 turbo ls with 4l80e) but if It will do air ride control the dominator would be worth while. Thanks.
Doable, although most ride control is now dependent on iPhone app. If you find a Dominator get it and run the whole car. ECM BCM TCM, with a Holley 12.3 Pro Dash,,, also if you can find one........
Great video, thank you. So, I purchssed the term because I didn't do as much research as I should have. It was the thing to get. It was 2023 and went with it. The car is going to be a street strip car, but heavy HP possibility. It's a f1x modular setup. Non drive by wire and non electric transmission. Am I f'ed with this setup? What I mean by that is, can it handle a 1000 crank modular vehicle setup? Also, the tuner that tuned my car was a complete rip off and now I'm wondering if he even fully tuned it or just let the term base tune itself? The Dyno sheet shows no air fuel ratio throughout the graph. Just shows hp and at what rpm. I can send the Dyno sheet. Also, I never got the handheld. Never knew it even supposedly came with one. So he kept it? Is that so I wouldn't see what he DIDNT DO, Or the lack of? It's been a heavy mess with this shop. They really screwed me. Anyways, should I find a used JUST dominator ECU and plug it in? Will the car run, or will I need to have it tuned again? Also, I have the Holley smart coils and digital dash. If you could help out, it would truly be helpful. Feel totally tooken advantage of. I certainly know much more now than I did then. Thank you. I did like and subscribe
Enjoy your video lessons. I'm interested in which is the recommended conversion unit for a 24 foot jetboat, with 25 year old BBC 502. I run it variously from sea level to skinny water mountain rivers, some times operating in below zero late fall Temps. Primary goal improved fuel efficiency and reliable starting/running.
Got a deal on one about 3 years ago, and it’s been sitting in my closet until I have a reason for it. You just can’t go wrong with the amount of input and output the dominator comes with
What would you recommend for a big block 454? I would like to find a old Accel Super Ram intake or maybe a GM performance ram jet intake. I'll be running a procharger as well. Also will have a 4l80e behind it, I currently have a TCI stand alone controller for that. But I wouldn't mind a ECU that controls all of it.
Have you ever had IAC issues with the TermX on mod motors. Its seems the IAC sensor is grounded on one side and then PWM- on the other side straight from Holley. Two grounds just dont work. I rewired the ground side to ACC 12v and it started working
There are issues with the harnesses, which is why i suggest and personally went with an HCR harness. The Holley harnesses are extremely inexpensive and mass produced in crazy volume. It’s one of those you get what you pay for type of things
@Joe Simpson Its weird. I looked at the wiring diagrams and they all show it wired incorrectly, ground with ground. Contacted Holley and they said they've never had a problem or complaint. I just rewired it on my own, and the IAC motor started to actually fire. It wasnt doing anything initially but the handheld did show numbers.
If I want to run mpfi with a throttle body and a blower on a classic engine with no need for transmission control or fans. HP with a Holley throttle body would be my best option for what a need vs affordability?
So I have a question. I finally installed my Xmax with trans controller. My question is that I havent gotten it toned, but just let the system do its thing. Is that ok?
I ran the HP units for years and considered going the Terminator way but ended up going with the Dominator ECU to have it all. The Terminator X ECU has too many limitations for what I want to do.
Hi,…I have learned a lot and appreciate your knowledge. Question. If I get a Holley ecu and have the car tuned… does the ecu allow the tuner to lock the ecu/tune? Does the Holley HP/ dominator have traction control built into ecu or you have to buy another box?
Hey, I'm having a hard time deciding on what system is gonna be the best or right. It'd going into a 2012 silverado, along with a lq9 with 4" stroker crank. It currently has a 4.3v6. It's not a daily driver or used to haul anything. Do I need a system that talks to the body control module, or not? I've looked at Fitech systems, but again, just not sure! Any advice and or help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
hey i know this video has been up for a bit but i forgot i had a question until i am getting closer to installing my holley ecu. So long long story short i bought a holley terminator ls (#550-660). I thought it was a steal (lol oww) on sale during xmas 2020? maybe 2018? anyway it was about a month later the terminator x was released and i see sloppy mech showing it being used a junkyard truck. I had committed to a cathedral intake and still wanted Holley's self tunability so I was sold on this unit although im only running a cammed NA 5.3 its money spent a while ago so im not stuck on the terminator x being cheaper. however im wondering why the terminator ls is never mentioned. I was told it can run alcohol injectors and i have trans control with dbc. Its a very impressive unit but the lesson was learned to wait until you need something to buy it. Joe if you have a chance could you compare the terminator ls ecu, the only things i can find a difference between the x and ls is the computer housing and alch injector capability>? Is this just an in between unit of terminator x and the dominator? thanks if you got the time, and thanks for your channel helpin ppl like me get real tuning info from someone with a sense of humor and gets it. Im up in jersey i was thinking about driving down for a tune!
My biggest issue with any aftermarket system is how reliable are they? It’s one thing if I inject my 340 or swap in a Hemi in my Duster. But I also have a 79 Ramcharger that I take to the middle of nowhere. As of now I run a carb on a mild 360 magnum. It will eventually get a 5.7 Hemi. As of now the plan is a Mopar ECU. I know they are not the easiest thing to tune but they are reliable. I don’t want to be stranded 100 miles from civilization on some mountain. I can’t call AAA.
awesome video and lots of into! im looking to convert my 91 3000gt vr4 to e85 with a flex fuel sesnor. can i use any of these ECU to do that? will i need to re-pin or replace sensors since mine are older mitsubishi? any info would be great as im somewhat of a beginner!
I've got a 97 S14, Its got a 5.3 LS from Yukon truck, T56 from 01 Camaro, whipple supercharger. Runs on stock GM ECU, clean custom harnesses. Dakota digital for gauges. The car currently running lean, RPM/Speedometer gauges not working properly. Initially was thinking to get a Dominator but the price is high on those, after seeing this video, Terminator x might be a good option for me. Only thing is that I've heard the harness that comes with Terminator x aren't that good, and 3.5 inch screen won't display everything, only oil pressure, temp, AFR, timing. also as you mentioned in the video, it doesn't have oil&air temp sensors. So my question is that should I keep using Stock ECU since it should easily handle 1000hp, and just go with a 7 inch display and a GPS speedometer adaptor? Hope my question make sense, any tips will be much appreciated and thank you for the video.
My head hurts with all the different stuff out there.. I have been looking into a stand-alone unit for my LT1 gen2 sbc this motor has the "opti spark" and no rear distributor hole in the back of the intake which is in a 4thgen f-body camaro .. note: intake manifolds for these engines are non-existent that will fit under the cowl of a 4thgen f-body that I can use a distributor there is not enough room unless you cut the cowl... which i do not want to do just wish there was an easier option that doe snot requires tp spend thousands to get rid of the old odb1 PCM..
Joe, even though the Term X only has 4 ins/outs, can't you use the input output module and add another 8 & 8? And do you feel that would give a turbo car enough options for control?
@JoeSimpsonAtTempest man, this video was an eye opener. I ordered a Term X on cyber monday because I picked up through one of my WD's for $1050. But I didn't know anything about them. The more I looked into it, I realized it wasn't the ecu I thought it would be. So I literally just cancelled my order between the time I left my comment and right now 🤣 Hoping I don't regret it, because the price just went up almost $300 now the sale is over, but I figured by time I add the in/out mod, tc mod, and whatever else I realize I still need, I could've bought the HP, or something else. I need to figure something out, ecu wise, as I'm hoping to have this thing ready by spring time.
Very informative, thank you. One question I have, does the Dominator control the transmission like a Terminator X max does? I am running a 302 & 4R70W from an explorer & wanted to add a turbo later. Was looking at the terminator x max because of the trans control. Any help or advice is appreciated! Have a great day!
Hi Joe, Quick Question, wondering which Holley, you would recommend me going with for my set up, obviously with the room for growth. i Might build another motor in the near future. Currently i have a stock block / rotating assembly which is the Forged blend internals. it is a 1990 5.0 , when i built the motor, it still had the cross-hash marks in the cylinders and the pistons were stamped TRW. they were definitely original from Ford as i know the cars history from new. it has a Trick Flow stage 1 Cam which is a 510 Lift with i believe like 221 - 228 Duration. i have a Cobra Upper and lower intake with a set of Pro Comp heads that i had my local speed shop / Machine shop go through them. They took out all the slag out of the casting and flowed the exhaust bowl. i gasket matched everything. Short travel crane race lifters, Crane Gold 1.6 Roller Rockers with hardened pushrods and guide plates. Etc. , etc. Mated with a Freddie Brown built AOD Manual Valve body with a brake and electronic overdrive and a 3800 Stall Convertor currently running 373:1 Ford racing gears. 60 lb. Injectors, 70MM Professional Products throttle body with a Ford Lighting 90 MM Mass Air. 3" Aluminum Drive shaft, Ford Racing rear end cover with the cap supports. torque Supports with UPR Upper and Lower Adjustable Hiem Joint control arms. Running a Vortech V1 Stirm that was upgraded to a SI Trim when Vortech rebuilt the blower. As well as running the Air to Water Power cooler with a heat exchange up front and a 5-gallon ice box in the trunk with a 8 GPM pump running through 3/4 Lines front to back. running about 15.5 - 16 lbs of boost. Has a pretty decent tune from Real Speed in Bohemia Long Island New York about 6 - 7 Years ago on the factory computer chipped. Car made like 465 RWHP with 440 RWTQ. Also have some safety in place. If i rev's the car past 5850RPM it will pull 4 degrees of timing and add 10% more fuel as not to hurt, it. My future plans is to build a Dart Block with all bullet proof internals so i can make some real HP. But for now, this car went best of 10.87 @ 126 MPH. on completely stock suspension as i wasted to get this car into the 10's before doing the suspension just to see if i could. I do have all the good suspension parts that i haven't installed yet. So back to my original question do you think i should lean towards the Holly dominator , Terminator or the Holly EFI. Thank yoi in advance for the input. JImmy

Awesome vid Joe. Gonna go with Term XMax in my Fairmont. Just a simple 5.3 turbo/4L80
Definitely cover at a minimum the xflow 1375 please. This is what I'm running and familiar with. Running single 7875 on a 351w
Have any experience with the Edelbrock Pro Flo 4? It's a fully sequential setup I was thinking about using one of my big block Ford
My biggest gripe with X is the O2, i have to replace mine about every 4 months. Running 93 pump gas btw.
Very good video, learned a bunch. Definitely appreciate you putting this info out for free!
Yes do a video on all the sniper ecu I was looking at the sniper 4500 1500hp capable units

Hey joe i have a question. Do you know why a holley terminator x ecu will only crank an not give any spark or fuel? It wont pick up any rpm signal at all. Im starting to get concerned that the ecu is toast.
Wonder what the dominator goes for price wise
It seems like since they have done the work to make the wizard they should offer it for the dominator so you can move it around and have it say you still need a tune and limit it to like 3000 rpm
My man just put Devin the Dude on there LMAO!
Perfectly placed too.
Would love a video on the sniper.. I just bought one a few months ago and not really sure if I shot myself in the foot
If you haven't installed it yet, swap for a Terminator Stealth setup. The Sniper is the worst throttle body EFI Holley offers.
@@michaelallen2501 already installed it.. at this point it’s personal.. gonna make that thing my bitch 😅
Does the same recommendation for a turbo setup go for a supercharger setup?
You have to fix your twitch, HAA HA , Great timing I was just on this merrygoround and I found the info helpful, to say the least!!
Hey bud summit racing has a bunch of holley dominator ecu in stock
They come and go. They usually don’t last long!
I got a terminator X mainly bc I can't tune shit with a laptop. I just wanted the thing to tune itself well enough to drive to shows and scoot on the highway.
How’s it doin?
HOLLEY EFI TERMINATOR X MAX STEALTH 4150 - BLACK 550-1012 can you compare this one?
which product you think is best for 2F Toyota Land Cruiser FJ 40 engine? Thank you.
I'd really like to see a sniper video
I want to put fuel injection on a 1963 chevy 292 inline 6. Sequential injection won't work because it's siamese port intake
saved, invaluable knowledge that I will eventually need when I get off my ass and work on my car
Fantastic info. Ty for making these videos.
I’m running the Terminator X because I’m poor and running high impedance injectors. However I did ditch the poverty 3.5” display for a 7” Holley display 🧐🎩
The 3.5 is nice especially for data logging.
Really all of the ECU's besides the Dominator need just a few more inputs
Honestly I think a big help would be allowing some of the trans or DBW i/o stuff on the X max to be reconfigured for something else.
What would you suggest for engine trans package if your running a 6l80? I’ve been told neither of the Holley options will work.
Can I run octane booster like boostane on a terminator x with the bosch wideband?
Sounds like a Dominator will be in my future. The internal logging and extra outputs will be a huge plus. Building a twin turbo ls gbody.
Got a deal on one about 3 years ago, and it’s been sitting in my closet until I have a reason for it. You just can’t go wrong with the amount of input and output the dominator comes with
Street strip car, true street events. 427 FI 94mm turbo, th400, radial car. Leaning towards dominator
Is that ok?
I mean if it runs it runs but why spend all the money on something and not use it to its full potential?
whats efi good for beetle 1973-76 ? thanks to help 🙏
If I want run VVT for the gen III hemi am I limited to the Terminator X max?
I'm looking for something to run a Maserati motor. What would you suggest?
great vid! thanks Joe!
Thanks for clarifying on the difference 👍👍
Is the hp capable of utilizing a strain gauge shifter?
I ran the HP units for years and considered going the Terminator way but ended up going with the Dominator ECU to have it all. The Terminator X ECU has too many limitations for what I want to do.
What would you recommend for a car making 3,500 to 4,000?
I liked to know more about Edelbrock pro Flo 4 system put one on my 69 camaro want to tune it better.
Joe Simpson Good info man. So how would you compare Haltech vs Holley stuff
What about the CAN I/O module you can use with the terminator??
Awesomeness in overload 👏👏👏
hey i know this video has been up for a bit but i forgot i had a question until i am getting closer to installing my holley ecu.
I remember back in the day deleting the ECU in G-Body’s and square body’s lol
My biggest issue with any aftermarket system is how reliable are they? It’s one thing if I inject my 340 or swap in a Hemi in my Duster. But I also have a 79 Ramcharger that I take to the middle of nowhere. As of now I run a carb on a mild 360 magnum. It will eventually get a 5.7 Hemi. As of now the plan is a Mopar ECU. I know they are not the easiest thing to tune but they are reliable. I don’t want to be stranded 100 miles from civilization on some mountain. I can’t call AAA.
awesome video and lots of into! im looking to convert my 91 3000gt vr4 to e85 with a flex fuel sesnor. can i use any of these ECU to do that? will i need to re-pin or replace sensors since mine are older mitsubishi? any info would be great as im somewhat of a beginner!
watching
Daily cruise only
My head hurts with all the different stuff out there..
@@The_Vanilla_Guerilla by the numbers yea but there are limitations and inconveniences with the expanders
@ get a dominator they actually just came down in price by like 500 or so i think. Hell of a deal and you will never outgrow it
@@JoeSimpsonAtTempest could I reach out to you about tuning?
Devin The Dude! Hell yeah!
Can the universal terminator x 550-936 run MSD's DIS coil near plug.. ?
Can anyone tell me why a terminator x max is 1800ish with the handheld and 2000ish without it? It seems backwards.
Yes the dominator has trans control like term x max
JImmy
I don’t think anyone read past 5.0. Sorry.😢
Damn, when i got to the Devin tha Dude clip I knew that clicked on the right breakdown video...
DOMINATOR... But Not Available... "Inquisinator" says that's weird... What about the Denso cross on the Bosch O2. What makes the NTK so different?
