There is pretty much no way to make a Garfield movie without having some goofy and non-canon subplot that doesn't even relate to the comics.
’d like a Garfield movie where Liz leaves Jon because he’s a no good loser simp before blowing his brains out. And then Garfield comes in to see his owner dead and angry he has no one to feed him. But then he realizes he can eat Jon’s corpse and finds it delicious. Then, days after no one sees Jon, they come to his house to find Garfield had eaten most of him and assume he killed Jon. They then put Garfield down while Odie goes to a foster home where his vegan owners starve him with meat substitutes.
I do have a minor nitpick regarding Odie. Odie is probably the smartest character in this whole movie, which is odd considering Odie is an idiot for every other iteration of the character.
I agree there should have been balance like they did with him in the show , movie made feel like Odie didn’t have much of personality when the made him too smart .
Look, I get why the live action movies get the shit they do. But Bill Murray NAILED Garfield in them. The only thing garfield about Chris Pratt's is the design.
i hate how they need to get milk in this movie 😭 its rlly bad for adult cats to have milk since theyre lactose intolerant and milk leads to vomiting and diarrhea
The film just felt so rushed and didn’t feel like a Garfield movie its just some random adventure that happens to slap Garfield and so much annoying ads on there
I mean, should this really be a shock? Garfield never really had that much depth to begin with, especially the comic strips and cartoons. Those who knew that shouldn't really expect much from this movie, it's serviceable at best.
yeah, as someone who used to watch alot of Garfield shows/movies, most Garfield "stories"(outside of His 9 lives) aren't really Garfield centric and moreso just random adventures that have Garfield just plopped into them. "what if Garfield and his friends where superheroes?" "what if Garfield goes into the real world?" and such, which is why i wasnt to bothered by the movies weird father abandonment evil cat lady bull love story plot thing (although the bull side plot does get alot of unnecessary focus tbh).
Agreed, the bit can only be stretched for so longer before it gets old. But it’s their job as filmmakers to get creative with it. You and I could create a more compelling narrative about Garfield that makes sense in probably a day. Meanwhile this is what professionals came up with
The whole “garfield reuniting with an estranged parent” thing is done so much better in one of the tv specials. I think it was garfield on the town but I don’t really care enough to look it up
I remember reading an article that made this observation: This Garfield movie is probably the most faithful adaptation of the comic, in particular the comedy and structure as they compared it to the comic during the 80s and 90s (with even Jim Davies saying as such) and that is why critics and movie buffs are tearing it a new one.
Kinda spoilers, don't read further if you want to go in 100% blind I don't think that's true. Jon, even though I don't hate him in this movie or anything, is depicted as much more of a clumsy, but well-meaning everyman in this movie, rather than the lovable dork he was in the 90s comics Also, several important characters from the comics don't make a return in the plot (and Jon's mostly sidelined by the new characters), like Arlene, Nermal, and Liz (the latter two only get small cameos), not even Garfield's mom appears which is really odd considering they made an entirely new character as his dad I think Garfield & Friends does a better job, even though it does swap out Arlene for Penelope I feel like the stories are much more Garfield-y than how action-focused the movie gets near the end I don't think it's a bad movie, I liked it in the theater, but it's not very Garfield to me (Unless you meant in comparison to the other movies, in which case I agree since it's not hard when your competition is two live action/CGI hybrid movies)
"The world of Garfield seems limited." There is the show Garfield and Friends. If you love Garfield, or even like him just a bit, I don't think you can go wrong with this one.

It shows how much the casting people has narrow setted mind on things, such as A list celebs taking something nostalgic and making their mark. I was like "Lorenzo Music helped create this character! You can't do that!" Especially when Frank Welker has voiced Garfield a handful of times and NAILED IT. I wish Hollywood would leave it alone
Unless Bill Murray was contractually obligated to come back, there's no way he'd ever want to come back for another one. Especially how much he hates the films in many interviews. Also, it took so long for him to be in another Ghostbusters movie, so trying to get him in an animated adaptation nobody wanted would be impossible. 😅
Why Welker isn't a big enough legend for movie producers to include him is beyond me, the man's been voicing Fred since Scooby-Doo's inception Unfortunately it seems like he just barely landed to be in the SCOOB! movie, since he doesn't even voice Fred in that movie, just Scooby (and probably because they couldn't find any celebrity with the range to play Scooby like Welker can)
@@ShirubaGin Sometimes when he says he’ll upload a video in a few minutes/hours/tomorrow, it usually gets delayed. but it’s never really his fault it happens.
I think Garfield is like Tom & Jerry, both are very short things that can't really work in longer formats (movies) and also doesn't really have much depth in general so I don't think a Garfield movie is a good idea
I feel like the first Tom and Jerry Movie had some good quality elements, and many fans enjoyed the Racing Movie that came out in 2005. But then the Tom and Jerry Movies went through a weird cross-over phase and lost their charm.
They could’ve had any other animal character as the main character and it would’ve been the same, Garfield is almost a complete non factor in his own movie 😭
Honestly, if they ever do a sequel, they should either: A) Adapt the original 1988 script for Garfield's Judgement day (a cancelled Garfield 2D animated movie written by Jim davis himself), or B) Just take the extended cast, somber tone, more Child-like Garfield, and just more interesting edge from the Film Roman era of the character, such as the specials, and Garfield and Friends. They not only have bouncy animation, great songs, surprisingly witty dialogue and a fun cast, but they can also be very heartwarming when needed (the ending sequence from Garfield on the town, as well as the rocking chair scene from the Christmas special are still just well made tear-jerkers).
11:12 I liked the movie but I'm glad I finally hear someone criticizing this joke, it felt like it went on for AGES when I saw the movie and I'm surprised this is the first time I hear someone bring it up
The worst part of the movie is the lactose farm characters. They just seem very out of place and annoying, I would've liked the movie if that entire side plot didn't exist.
The Garfield comics are at their best when they showcase how much John and Odie and Garf actually care about each other, and thats what grabbed my attention in the trailer is the moment when John is kind to baby Garf. I think they could have done a genuinely heartfelt story about biological family versus found family, but you know, movies have to be marketable now instead of genuine stories
The thing that doesn't work about this movie is that Jon is barely in it when hes the driving force behind almost everything in Garfield. Jon forces Garfield into the antics and most of Garfields talking moments in the strips are his smart aleck remarks to Jons craziness or life in general. Without Jon, Garfield isn't that interesting to watch. But for some reason all these adaptations shove Jon in the back and have Garfield interact with random animal characters.
Honestly from everything I've seen so far, the plot of "meets dad after many years + heist mission" seems like something that would be in an animated *sequel*, not a first movie.
I skipped over the sponsor I didn't realize that Mark just implied he basically used and advertised a vape lite (outside of the normal "get off this bad habit!" usecase) What the fuck?
It seems almost like setting Chris Pratt up to look bad by casting him with Samuel Jackson. Samuel Jackson is a face actor that gets frequently used in animated films for his big name, and he doesn't really have a voice other than his own, but he's very good at voice acting despite this. Meanwhile, Chris Pratt has the first two traits but not the third.
Honestly if the kids who were litteraly watching the film in your theatre got confused as to what the hell was even happening then i doubt this film is even gonna have much rewatch value at all for families and younger audiences
I went to see this movie with my boyfriend at the latest time it was showing. We came in 15 minutes late and there was one family in the theater. We went in expecting a fun time to make fun of a shitty movie but it was so unbelievably boring there was nothing to joke about. Ten minutes later, the screen went black and the lights came on and no one came to fix it.
It wasn’t the best movie, but i don’t think it was that bad. Of course if it was just an animated movie without a known character it’d probably be less talked about or just fly under the radar. But as a Garfield movie with a reunite with father plot it was okay.
Also it was one of the first films to have an emphasis on using stylized CGI instead of the realism Pixar look. 3 years before Into the Spider-Verse did it.
Honestly, I liked the movie, but channels and reviewers like these are why it's so hard to make movies nowdays in general. They expect the movie to fail They go into cinemas wondering how it will fail They then complain about not liking it Cynicism and bad faith criticism all around Bonus points for endlessly quoting TVtropes, pointing out "Cliches" like they're themselves not derivative of CynicalReviews, Mr.Enter, Schaffrillas, Shady, etc.
This right here! Media has always been subjective, I don't care what a TH-cam critic (btw with no experience) has to say just because they have followers just enjoy what you enjoy people!
One thing I like about this movie is Garfileds character development. At the start he talks about how he had never jumped, but near the end he does insane leaps in logic for the plot to work. Trully an incredible hero's journey
I get your point regarding the end credits song and how they might as well have included it in the film, but it probably would've felt out of place within the story and dragged things out more. That, and I appreciate when behind-the-scenes material is included during movie credits. Doesn't happen often, but it's nice. Also, at my screening, when the two cows embraced offscreen at the end, a kid in the audience shouted "I THOUGHT THIS WAS A G-RATED MOVIE!!!", then tried to shout it again, cuz he thought he was that clever, before his dad quietly told him to shut up.
I don't know why, but every time I see media where Garfield's lips are moving, it just throws me off. Obviously, Garfield can't talk; he speaks in thought bubbles. So why have him look likes he's talking when he can't? Again, I don't get why that bothers me so much.
I agree, the movie sucks, there was no kicking odie off the table, no shipping nermal to abu dabi, and No cool references to any of the shows like Garfield and friends.

I'd probably prefer an inbetween of his characterization in this movie and the actual comics
I agree there should have been balance like they did with him in the show , movie made feel like Odie didn’t have much of personality when the made him too smart .
I honestly liked that he wasn’t much of a punching bag here like he usually is tbh

Is there such thing as "too faithful"?
Kinda spoilers, don't read further if you want to go in 100% blind
I don't think that's true. Jon, even though I don't hate him in this movie or anything, is depicted as much more of a clumsy, but well-meaning everyman in this movie, rather than the lovable dork he was in the 90s comics
Also, several important characters from the comics don't make a return in the plot (and Jon's mostly sidelined by the new characters), like Arlene, Nermal, and Liz (the latter two only get small cameos), not even Garfield's mom appears which is really odd considering they made an entirely new character as his dad
I think Garfield & Friends does a better job, even though it does swap out Arlene for Penelope I feel like the stories are much more Garfield-y than how action-focused the movie gets near the end
I don't think it's a bad movie, I liked it in the theater, but it's not very Garfield to me
(Unless you meant in comparison to the other movies, in which case I agree since it's not hard when your competition is two live action/CGI hybrid movies)
"The world of Garfield seems limited."
There is the show Garfield and Friends. If you love Garfield, or even like him just a bit, I don't think you can go wrong with this one.
Garfield comic lore is insane, they didn't even scratch the surface with the movie
Heck, they didn't even bother to put Garfield's actual mom from the comics in
If Garfield said that the reason he hates Mondays was because his dad abandoned him on a Monday, I would've forgiven every fault this movie had.

Me personally, I was gonna call him Chris *Catt* (please kill me).
Fun fact: The Garfield Movie is the first film in years to get a Swiss German dub since Stuart Little 2 from 2002.
Odd but interesting
Imagine if they had Frank Welker back as Garfield, and who to voice Garfield’s dad? Bill Murray
missed opportunity 😭
Unless Bill Murray was contractually obligated to come back, there's no way he'd ever want to come back for another one. Especially how much he hates the films in many interviews. Also, it took so long for him to be in another Ghostbusters movie, so trying to get him in an animated adaptation nobody wanted would be impossible. 😅
You should see the Latin American Spanish dub
Why Welker isn't a big enough legend for movie producers to include him is beyond me, the man's been voicing Fred since Scooby-Doo's inception
Unfortunately it seems like he just barely landed to be in the SCOOB! movie, since he doesn't even voice Fred in that movie, just Scooby (and probably because they couldn't find any celebrity with the range to play Scooby like Welker can)

I think Garfield is like Tom & Jerry, both are very short things that can't really work in longer formats (movies) and also doesn't really have much depth in general so I don't think a Garfield movie is a good idea
Yeah but Tom and Jerry is good.

So basically, if you want to watch an actually good movie starring an orange cat and a dog sidekick, just watch Puss In Boots: The Last Wish
LS mark is just human Garfield
11:12 I liked the movie but I'm glad I finally hear someone criticizing this joke, it felt like it went on for AGES when I saw the movie and I'm surprised this is the first time I hear someone bring it up
Exactly this I loved the movie but that joke bro 😭
The issue with Chris Pratt is that he just doesn't fit the character. Garfield needs that sarcastic expressionless voice.
Honestly from everything I've seen so far, the plot of "meets dad after many years + heist mission" seems like something that would be in an animated *sequel*, not a first movie.

All these movies and John still hasn't been forgiven.

Something about LS Mark being excited for the Garfield Movie is strangely funny.
That definitely confused me too when it comes to stuff like The Garfield Show.
