sing 1 is boring as hell but the seth macfarlane mouse is such a funny character to me. like, every other character is meant to be super likable and relatable, but then you have this character who's just an unapologetic asshole to everyone around him. he doesn't even have like a redemption arc, he just indirectly causes the theater to be destroyed, doesn't help fix it unlike everyone else, shows up at the end, delivers the best performance in the movie, then fucking dies
@@CometX-ing wolf girl? Say the name right dude and her name is literally porsha Crystal but overall the movie is a cash grab and all their movies are but it's still good and amazing
This. These people are indirectly saying "It's shit and I have no problem showing my kids shit." I wonder how many of those "it's just a kids movie" people have children of their own. I hope that actual parents don't think that way and instead try to show their children something that doesn't turn them into mouth breathing idiots.
Someone: It's just a kid's movie. Me: So is Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, Iron Giant, Batman Beyond: Return of The Joker, and the Goofy Movies and those tell stories adults and children can enjoy.
this is so dramatic and a weird comment. If it was a children's movie spreading bad messages or glorifying racism that's different but the criticisms are that the movie was too uplifting , predictable and cookie cutter, so this comment makes zero sense. As long as the movie has a good message its a good children's movie, having amazing philosophical storylines, does not make a children's movie good
@@hickorydaisy4117 why are you saying “it’s a bad childrens movie is not an excuse because children are impressionable, implying that the SING franchise is doing something bad to children or causing them harm in some way
You see, when listening to the Sing soundtrack, if you turn that brain on for just a second, you quickly realize: “Wait, can’t I just listen to this, but sung by the original artist?”
I do think the chameleon secretary has a clever character design. She has a false eye so she is often looking in 2 different directions, which is a neat way to depict a defining characteristic of chameleons. (Their eyes move independently of each other to help spot prey)

Sing apparently is part of the reason why Taron Edgerton got the role to play Elton John in Rocketman and that's the one good thing to come from that movie
I was gonna come down here and mention this. His cover of that Elton John song, along with him bonding with Elton on the set of Kingsman, is what got him the role, and that definitely makes Sing worth it in my book. Rocketman was an amazing movie, and I wish it was acknowledged more. I'm a bit frustrated with Bohemian Rhapsody, since it was an ok biopic that came out and got so much praise, and I feel like if it hadn't come out the year before Rocketman, Rocketman would have gotten more attention and awards.
The “My Way” and “I’m Still Standing” scenes are the only things I liked from Sing. The covers are legitimately good. I don’t remember his name but the Gorilla’s VA was so good at singing an Elton Jon song, to the point that he played Elton himself in Rocketman, and Seth can really sing good. His cover of My Way and just the whole mouse character in general were great. But that’s it, that’s all that was good in the movie.
Full stop agree. I wouldn't even mind this concept if they pulled together the entire cast of singers like them. It might be a fun and unique way to share songs to a younger audience. But instead we got like ScarJo singing with auto tune...
Literally all Judy's message from Zootopia is body positive, they told her she couldn't be a police officer because she's too small, and she passed the training, plus she faced a freaking polar bear, and that person ignores it because, conventionally attractive" seriously ? Also F for Mike.
Wasn't there also a really angry article about the Shakira gazelle being "too hot"? Zootropolis brought up some really weird, published, complaints about sexy animals.

I hate that people defend bad movies for “just being a kids movie” but then treat another kids movie like it’s the greatest thing to ever exist without acknowledging that most kids movies are terrible
But I feel like people judge kid's movies out of context and often to an adult's standards of humor and story, when that simply isn't the movie's purpose. Maybe you don't like them because they're not made for you. Kids like dumb stuff. Kid's movies are going to cater to that, and there's nothing wrong with that. It's fine to not like whatever movies you want, but remember that if it's entertaining to kids, it's succeeding at its purpose (however low that bar to success may be)
@TheKitKatLizard I also feel like expecting any “good” kid’s movie to also appeal to an adult audience is asking for too much. IMO only the best of the best movies land with every age range. I like a lot of kid’s movies, but as an adult, I go into them knowing they’re aiming for a child’s sense of humor. I like a lot of them for being dumb, silly fun.
You know, my favorite part of Sing 2 was when the wolf boss almost murdered Moon. It was mostly the only time I actually cared what was happening bc Moon looked absolutely terrified, the one time I felt real emotion from the movie.
Man, if the movie was just about Johnny (gorilla guy), Mouse guy (mouse guy) and Buster Moon (not the mouse guy/gorilla guy), it'd be SO much more bearable. All three's criminal related stories could be woven together so nicely. That'd be a very neat story. Also that "Judy Hops" thing was the most sus story I've heard from a """journalist""".
I just found out that the character model for the dog girl in sing 2 and gru's wife from despicable me 2 are exactly the same. They even were the same dress. Illumination recycling models to save that dollar.
i like how they were all "body positivity yas" in Sing, and then Sing 2 introduced several generic good looking female characters (Bobcat girl, wolf girl, dog girl), they are literally furbait.
Not fur bait but cash grab and they used their designs and put them skinny but cute or hot because if they were thicker 😏 then you know exactly what's going to happen in twitter and it's literally going to blow up crazy 🎉 Please just say the names right and it's kinda disrespectful(jk lol) Wolf girl: porsha Crystal (Not a bob cat but a lynx cat) Lynx girl: Nooshy Dog girl: Suki Lane
@@puppiekit nah and it's kinda not bad to be honest and yeah everybody has their own opinion and it's kinda cute a bit when she gets happy when she sees Johnny's dad
Kinda wish the performers actually interacted with each other. The sequel acts like they're all super close but in the first movie (and hell even in the sequel itself) they barely talked to each other apart from the scene where Rosita and Gunter comfort Ash after her boyfriend cheated on her. Both movies kinda just imply character development without really showing it. Like that's not inherently a bad thing, like idk if this was even intentional but I like that Ash wears mostly red clothing in the sequel wheras in the first her outfit was essentially a copy of her boyfriend's, showing that shes more confident and has moved on from him, but in a movie about people putting on a show together while overcoming their own personal issues I kinda want to actually see them bonding
I think it would've been funny to not ever have the point of view leave buster moon. So you just have all this random shit like cops, criminal gorillas, mobster bears, 24 pig kids all just show up and cause chaos with no explanation.
Probably one of the reasons why I dropped both Sing movies and eventually despise them. It's as if they barely show effort on adding intriguing dialogues between all of the characters. To be honest, I have waited for the sequel if they could tackle on building up established relationships from the first film including what is supposed to be Johnny & Meena's romance (As a matter of fact, I used to ship them and my internal feelings became real salty by the time Meena was given a foil love interest instead. Like is Illumination afraid of including a cross species love story or something!? What a ripoff!😠)
@@simonj3413 I did see that, but I mainly thought he was a highland cow due to the colour of his hair which I thought matched theirs better than a yak’s.
I think a movie SPECIFICALLY about Seth MacFarlane's mouse would've been great, a lounge singer mouse who got tied into Mafia (maybe a cat Mafia) dealings and owes them money would be such an interesting character
I felt like Sing was too unfocussed. If they had chosen ANY of those characters to do a solo movie on, it would have been better. Sure, it would maybe not have been as much of a commercial success but rooting for ONE protagonist and watch them succeed at least gives more satisfaction than watching 7 of them thrown at you in the hopes that you identify with one of them. At best, it would feel unfocussed and at worst, you see right through the facade of a movie and see it for what it is - just the minimum effort, safe bet production with the audacity to call itself "entertainment" or "art"
"I'm tired of giving [their movies] a pass because one of them comes out and isn't as bad as everyone thought it would be." It seems Illumination's entire philosophy can essentially be boiled down to: Set the bar so low that people will be delighted when you accidentally stumble over it.
rest is peace mike the mouse. he was a real one. when you needed someone to talk to, he was there. when you needed someone to lift your spirit up, he was there. rest in peace my man. rest in peace.
The only thing good about these films is that they've inspired me to write a story about actually characterized anthropomorphic animals competing in a deadly spoof of American Idol.
20:32 I had to make sure this was real. I hadn't even seen the movie and despite Mark saying that this was a real line, I was thinking 'no way they actually put that line in the movie'. So, I went and checked the script online, and lo and behold, I found it. Not only that, but just one line above, the ice cream elephant calls the sing elephant (whose name I forgot and don't care enough about to look up) 'Your Majesty'. *I am not joking.* Like, I can't tell whether or not this is supposed to be a joke about simps, or if someone in the screenwriting group was _really_ into the elephant and just masked his attraction by creating another elephant character and having him say this.
Good grief, no wonder why they never flesh out Johnny and Meena's relationship into an interspecies romance. Also Illumination is playing too safe. 😤👎 It reminds of PPG remake back in 2016 where one screenwriter self-inserted himself as Jared Shapiro having a crush on Blossom. Sounds more creepy in canon to be honest.
To Despicable Me 2's credit, it was the last best Despicable Me Movie, due to it actually following the first film's story, as well as it still being focused on Gru, while the Minions were just a plot device. Plus some people think the 2nd Film is better then the 1st one.
Tbh, after Minions, Illumination did kinda went downhill in favor of focusing on cashgrabs. Don't get me wrong. I think The Grinch, the Sing movies and the first Sercet Life of Pets were some cool movies in my opinion, but they didn't have the same feel as the Despicable Me/Minions movies.
You kinda hit the nail on the head as to why Illumination films are difficult to talk about. I watched Sing in theaters myself and while it was far from anything I would consider good, it also wasn't that bad either. Like, I didn't feel like my money was wasted or that I was losing braincells; it was just...exactly what I expected it to be. And that makes it hard to talk about because I can't in good conscience recommend AGAINST the film. It's not like anyone's life will be worse for having seen it, and frankly, it's just not my place to steer people away from a movie that I personally dislike but isn't doing anything all that terrible. That would be...ethically questionable to say the least. All I can really do is point people toward better films and hope to God they actually find them appealing.
Ironic considering he probably only took the role in the first place because at this point, he’d literally take ANY role that’s not Family Guy related.
12:19 Yeah, this is arguably a common mistake when making works starring nonhuman characters or in a strange setting: Having a theoretically unusual setting, but having it be utterly aesthetic. For example, Shark's Tale has an aquatic setting, but the characters are so anthropomorphized that it could easily be a movie about humans. By contrast, something like Toy Story prioritized making sure that the problems the characters faced were "toy problems, not human problems".
I have to somewhat disagree on the Shark Tail one; although the story would be mostly the same, they did do some interesting things with the settings for a few characters/jokes. Like, Oscar is a cleaner fish, an actual type of fish that cleans gunk out of whales, so they made that like his job in the movie, and paralleled it to a car wash. His boss is a pufferfish who is easily stressed, so of course he blows up whenever it happens like a real pufferfish. And when oscar bets all his money, he bets it on a seahorse race, which is treated as a horse race. While yes, the story would have worked mostly the same if they were all humans, you would still miss out on some jokes/characterization if they were all humans instead; sort of like Spongebob in that regard. But yeah, that’s still a good point
@@sirGuy1995 I didn’t read any of your comment, but I am going to assume it sucks and you are a BIG POPPY HED!1!1!1! Because you said Shark Tails is good, I think.
"Judy from Zootopia is more conventianally attrative to human" Yeah... But you know what Judy's design does that none of the characters from Sing does? TELL ME WHO SHE IS. On another subject. Mike last being seen with a bear behind him, and then not even being mentioned in the second movie makes for a really good pun. Cause he's a mouse.
The fact that people love these movies baffles me, fair enough liking it but some go crazy praising it. It’s the epitome of Illumination’s business strategy, they feel soulless.
being fair, Johnny nailing Elton John, was pretty awesome, i can understand, that scene is a masterpiece by itself, he and Mike practically carried the movie
Honestly, besides despicable me 1 and 2, these are Illumination's best movies, which is a VERY LOW BAR TO CLEAR. They are fine movies, but they really do lack soul.
I really hate the "it's just a kids movie" argument. So your telling me that I got to grow up in the Disney Renaissance with movies like The Lion King but my son gets movies like Sing 1 & 2 because it's just a kids movie? Give the next generation of filmakers and storytellers something to work with!
This exactly. Something being made for kids doesn't mean that it can't tell a compelling narrative, and yet all the big studios nowadays use "for kids" as an excuse to copy and paste the same bullshit tropey stories.
The "its just a kids movie" excuse was invented by "animation is for everyone" people once ppl actually started watching animation and crtiticizing it.
I liked Mike’s story the most because he actually had a story that could stand on its own and actually be more interesting than the movie itself. Meena was my least favorite character because she came across as overhyped and ridiculously shy. Are we supposed to believe that she’s the best singer who rallies everyone together to build the theater back up when she spent most of the movie throwing a pity party that Buster enabled?
It’s honestly refreshing to hear someone tear this movie apart because I’m honestly sick of my friends and family let bad film making slide because “it’s just a kids movie.”
Ya know there's a saying that's similar to what you said "A children's story that kids only enjoy is not a good story. But a children's story that everyone can enjoy is a good kids story."
@@jarielwilliams9856Like, are you trying to say that if a kids movie is not enjoyable by kids it's bad, or any movie in general? And if it isn't the ladder, does that mean any kids movie that tries goes to hard and js accidentally more enjoyable by adults bad? For an example, Rango. That movie is great but if you're a child you may not like it as much as you would when you're older. Something to think about
@jackislegitterrified3689 I'd say that if it's something that all ages can enjoy it's a good kids movie or series, and doesn't need to explain the basic morals that kids already know, or do lame and disgusting jokes. Take bluey for example, everyone loves that show (I even saw a video of a dog watching it) I think that as long as kids, teens, and adults like it. Then it's a good piece of media.
Honestly the only thing I liked about sing 2 was that the main antagonist literally threatens to kill buster moon and ATTEMPTS TO MURDER HIM TWICE ?? 😭 it caught me so off-guard because I was not expecting life-or-death stakes in sing 2
To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand the Sing movies. The music is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp on musical theater, the songs will go over a typical viewers head.
What really bugged me about the first Sing movie was that Ash's whole story arc was supposed to be how she tries move on from her deadbeat and controlling boyfriend, but has Buster completely change her performance and take control of everything.
Honestly, these films would work better as animated series rather than as movies. Because you cannot make such huge worlds and characters so quickly and so well in such a tight time frame, especially with the massive cast you have. If it was like a 25-episode season to cover these I think they'd be fine films.
I just realised that Illumination is making the Mario Movie. This can be either a movie that is surprisingly good, a movie that is very memeable, a movie that is decent or just shit.

To The Movies Exhibit D) The Angry Birds Movie 1, Rachet and Clank, The Boss Baby, The Emoji Movie, Shrek The Third, Ralph Breaks The Internet, Scoob, and basically the rest of Illumination's catalog
The fate of Mike the Mouse sounds like the kind of plotline that Family Guy would do, to be honest EDIT which is kinda fitting since Seth MacFarlane voiced him
I’m surprised so many people give Illumination’s anthropomorphic animal designs a pass, I think they look awful. Particularly Porsha, they literally gave her the most freakishly long legs they could. They learned nothing from when they designed Max’s owner from Secret Life. Same goes for her dad, they just put a wolf head on Gru’s body.
i think the internet would disagree with you on Porsha _if you know what I mean_ and yea i literally noticed the wolf man kinda had Gru's body while I was watching it lmao. He's honestly one of the better characters tho, I like how batshit he is and he just full on tries to murder Moon
@@sketchyjulia Fair enough, I can’t even be mad at him for that as I’d probably do the same. I just don’t think either of them should get a pass just cause they’re popular amongst you know whos. There’s a reason why good anatomy is such an important part of anthropomorphic design.
@@SomeGuy-tr2hi she’s also taller than all of the characters including the gorilla and elephant?? She’s a wolf at the very least she should be shorter than the gorilla
@@sketchyjulia Exactly! Like I know it’s a redundant comparison, but Zootopia’s attention to detail when it comes to their anatomy completely eclipses this corporate product that’s being called a film.
I love how after making this video mark has changed the title from "Are the Sing movies any good?" To "The Sing movies are awful." Like he time to think it over and got more pissed off at the movies.
I think the point I agree with the most and needs to be brought up more is the point that there is a supreme lack of style in these movies. As someone who cares a lot about artistic direction, style is incredibly important to making any piece of art stick and be unique. Whether it be a game, a movie, a song or just an illustration, it's the firm belief of me - and many other artists I'm sure - that the fingerprints of the artist are just as important as the art itself, and with these shallow movies, there is hardly any artistic style and therefore no artistic substance.
@@Imperviousdragon Good is spiderverse, this is the equivalent of a boiled potato in movie form. Perfectly edible (and cheap) but if it's your favorite or you call it good you're actually insane. Only good thing to come out of it is the scene where the lion points a gun at the screen.
@@demetria-n Yes, but what you might see as a flaw others might actually like. Take this one game I'm playing, for example. I actually like it's overly happy, cutesy and wholesome tone, but some people might prefer a game that's grittier and less optimistic, which I tend not to like. One thing I can say about Illumination is that I usually find them fun to watch. They may not have the best stories, but I can't help but like the character designs in some of them. Other people actually don't like the artstyle, though, and that's fine. But usually the movies tend to be harmless, being derivitave and generic at worst, though usually just okay at best.
One thing that confuses me about the movie that few people already pointed out is, like...why animals? What's the point of having this movie feature anthropomorphic animal characters when they don't take even utilize certain traits of animals? Like at least have a dog pissing on a fire hydrant or a sheep having a "b-a-a-a" speech tic, or even a grizzly devouring a jar of honey and stealing someone's picnic basket. Literally BEAR MINIMUM EFFORT! This movie could have human characters and it would still be the same movie.
yea like i dont mind that much that theyre anthro animals but I do wish they did more with their world. The only things I can think of is Ash shooting her quills when she gets emotional (which porcupines cant actually do), Buster's small size allowing him to crawl through small spaces, and the gorilla dad escaping jail by breaking the wall and and scaling buildings while he escapes. other than that theyre just living in a normal California-esque city
Kind of agree with Unknown. The fact that the characters are anthropomorphic animals is honestly the best thing about the movies. Sure, they could have been told with humans, but why not animals? It adds more variance to the characters asthetics, which honestly makes them more appealing then they would be if they were humans. I do agree that it would have been nice to see something tying it in, though.
Well there's character design reasons and even marketing reasons (animals make younger audiences pay attention I suppose) tho you are right about it not being truly used more othern than a couple of jokes here and there unlike a world like Zootopia were the plot and world literally depend on them being animals. I suppose that was Illumination's logic, make it animals so they pay attention to us,and again, character variety (even if that can be obtained easily with humans, especially animated ones)
The only thing I dont agree with is that they're conning people. They're just making junk movies that the bulk wants to see. Most people are dumb. Studios are doing what people are giving them money for. It's not art, it's business.
See, this is why I'm very worried about the Mario movie. I know I know, Miyamoto's overseeing things and it's delayed but will that really be enough. Illumination hasn't made a movie that surpassed mediocre since Despicable Me 1 and has shown that it's willing to do the most cost effective moves to make as much money back as possible. Excuse me if I don't have much faith in them at all.
@@GameFreak2467 Don't see how it's a bad thing, honestly. For as much as a bad rap he's gotten for some questionable decisions in other aspects his biggest misstep regarding the Mario series itself were the suggestions he gave to Tanabe during the production of Sticker Star that were taken to the extreme. The guy has a clear vision for the series but he isn't opposed to Mario doing whacky stuff that breaks the norm (as proven by him approving of all of Odyssey's ideas besides the New Donkers, which he came around to anyways), so him spearheading the movie seems like the perfect fit.

I am so grateful for this review. For the longest time I thought I was the only one thinking “I don’t get it” after seeing glowing reviews of the franchise
In regards to the music take that even the editor addressed, there is a franchise that uses licensed music ( that already banged) in a genius ways to further the story and characters, where the praise should also goes to the people that made the movies: Shrek
Yeah the difference between song usage in Shrek and Sing is the difference between the clever choice and song placement in Glee season 1 vs when they did what does the fox say in Glee season 5
I legitimately am worried for the Mario movie considering Illumination’s track record, I’d have liked it if Dreamworks Animation got the reins. But who knows maybe it’ll be a film you wouldn’t expect Illumination to make.
The delay only heightens that worry. I feel nintendo went and saw how much of a success the sonic movie was and thought mario wouldn't fare well so they're changing the plot out of fear.
I really hope that the Mario movie isn’t truly bad, because if so Nintendo being as overprotective of their ip’s as they are would rob us the chance of seeing a Zelda, Metroid, kirby, pikmin, F-Zero, splatoon, or even another Mario movie again being too afraid to lend their Ip out again.
The sing movies have some of the worst trailers I've ever seen. Despite being meh movies, the trailers spoil the entire thing and ruin any potential surprises.
Funny story: I was super sick at the beginning of the year (not sure if it was THE sickness or just a really bad cold). One morning during the early stages, I woke up around 4-5 AM and felt awful. So I went down to make myself some oatmeal thinking that would make me feel better. During my disillusioned state, I decided to watch the first Sing for whatever reason. I ate my oatmeal, curled up on the couch and brought it up on demand. I didn't even make it five minutes into the film before I turned it off and went back to bed because I started feeling dizzy and nauseous. My body physically couldn't handle this movie.
While funny I'm just gonna press X to doubt that it was that awful of a movie. Also if you aren't sure whether it was or wasn't then rejoice for even if you had it, it was so mild that you aren't sure. I'm coming off of having it for a second time now and there was no question either time for me that my test would be positive. Last year it took me down for 3 weeks and put me borderline at whether they were going to admit me to the hospital or try the monoclonals. Thankfully it wasn't that bad this time but still plenty bad enough that I knew what it was before the test. It just didn't screw with my oxygen levels for more than a day this time though.
my friends and i actually watched this movie together pretty recently and we had a pretty decent time, it's nothing special i mean it's an illumination movie but we had fun watching it together. we spent a majority of the movie yelling at Mike and wondering just how much money this movie spent on getting the rights to use all those pop songs lol. we liked most of the characters well enough, like, obviously these movies aren't super good or anything but like- idk we had fun🤷 i would compare sing to a light snack food of a movie, like a rice krispies treat or something.
One thing from the Sing 2 trailer, didn’t bother seeing the film I didn’t care, that stood out to me was that the trainer was a proboscis monkey. As an animal nerd, I thought that was interesting that they used a fairly obscure animal.
I didn't like that film what so ever the other Grinch movie was just way better. The Grinch was alot more like the Grinch (the Illumination Grinch was way too nice)
I think The Grinch was just good. Had its moments, but it felt like a cashgrab. But be glad that Illumination wasn't like Blue Sky. Blue Sky in general died after Rio. The only good movie from them was The Peanuts Movie, with the rest being bland movies just to be like Ice Age.
what baffles me most about illuminations grinch is in the theme song that is in the movie! has the line "Who is this mean fellow With his skin all green and his teeth all yellow?" and the illumination Grinch's teeth are perfectly white.
that'd actually be really cool. it'd give alot more time to give different character interactions and flesh them out more. its why some movies fail greatly- they only have so much time to flesh out all their characters in a 1 hour 30 minute timespan
Sadly sing doesn't make enough attention or Money for it to happened but overall it might be a cute series I wouldn't mind watching but it should just be 7 main characters and maybe a few more like 2 and they could talk about their pass lives or something interesting we want to know like "wtf happened to porsha mom?

I fell into the trap of enjoying the first one when I was younger. After rewatching it nearly 5 years later, I can definitely see why people dislike it and I myself am one of them.

I really liked Sing when it was first released, I even thought it was one of the greatest animated movies of all time in fact. But now that I'm older and have a more critical mindset when it comes to media, I see it for what it truly is: A Cash Grab. This movie has such a simple story it is borderline forgetable, and I'm glad people are finally giving this movie the criticisms it deserves! -Rama
My home design teacher the other day was preaching to the lord that these movies are cinematic masterpieces and that no other movie even have a slimmer of a chance at being as good as these movies and that they all wish they could be these movies and refused to hear otherwise. Thinking about dropping her class
I know this is off topic, but Sausage Part suffers from the writing because it’s actually well animated it’s just that they focused on the story getting an R rating rather than focusing on the story having substance. It could’ve been a huge success because the concept is actually pretty damn funny, Toy Story like plot where people find out their sentient, a almost cult like song in the beginning to set the absurd tone of the movie, and Pixar like visuals.
Most of what I got from the movie was that it was mostly about a critique of religion and atheism. On the one hand, you've got the very obvious part where religions get formed in order to establish control, but then they get corrupted over time and there's a bunch of social constraints that impact people negatively (like how Sauerkraut wants to get rid of the Juice, or how buns and sausages can't go out with other buns and other sausages). But then on the other hand, you've got the atheist main character that tries to enlighten everyone with this new information, but fails to convince anyone because he's an asshole. The conceit of the movie, then, seems to be about the discussion of religion in general, and how people should interact with one another in order for something productive to happen. Oh yeah, and you get a bunch of violence and "sex" that you wouldn't expect to see in a movie like that, plus some amped up nods to other animated movies like the "Ratatouille" moment in the climax of the movie. But all those positives I mentioned are completely undercut by the fact that the reason the movie looks that good with just a $17 million budget is because the animators were threatened with being blacklisted if they couldn't meet the burden, and for that, I can't even really recommend it with that knowledge in the back of my head. That scene where they explode a guy by a soda bottle and mentos battallion sacrifice themselves was funny, but I can't imagine how the animators felt when they were sacrificed to make that scene happen.
My oldest nephew was obsessed with Sing as a baby to a point where it was one of three movies that was put on repeat all the time (the other two being Minions and Boss Baby...). When I first started watching it with him I kind of liked it. I was a huge Seth MacFarlane fan so I loved Mike, and it was because of this movie that I started paying more attention to Taron Egerton, and overall within the first few viewings I just thought it was a cute singing animals movie. The more I watched it, the more I realized how much it lacked in substance. But I will forever love the final singing competition mainly for Seth's "My Way" and Taron's "I'm Still Standing"
The thing about Sing is, I can absolutely see the potential. It needed better writing and character arcs. While I do enjoy the music and some of the characters (nothin inherently wrong with furry bait lmao), I do see, thanks to you, the movies' flaws.
Despicable me should of ended at two imo. The story was so fucking heart warming and I loved seeing gru get the happy life he deserved. I absolutely despise Despicable me 3 tho because it feels like the most pointless disappointing film I've ever seen in my life. I would of loved if they stuck to the Lucy mom plot stuff cause Gru's brother is such a terrible idea for a character. The Villain tho... he really felt like he had the charm of the first movie. Like you said.. some Illumination movies try to appeal to everyone which means... it doesn't really apply itself towards being a passionate movie.
Everything with the minions ruined those movies, like I liked them in the first movie but after they became the main focus of the series it lost its whole direction
Despicable Me 3 had way too many subplots especially with that one about Lucy and the oldest girl which lasted two scenes and didn't impact the plot in any way. (From what I remember as it's been a good few years since I've seen it)
Honestly, Sing 2 was one of those things where I turned my brain off and mostly enjoyed it when watching it, then I took like 2 seconds to think about it afterward was like "wait what the fuck did I just watch"
21:51 Which is sad. Because in real life, Bono lost his singing voice...MID-PERFORMANCE. And after YEARS of therapy despite everyone saying he was DONE... He returned to touring this year (was gonna be 2020 but um... Anyway that's probably why he did Sing - To kill some some time before the delayed tour finally started!)
I only know a little about Musical Theater, but I know a "Jukebox Musical" (I.E. Using pre-existing licensed songs) will ALWAYS be successful. Illumination were smart for licensing so much. Guaranteed payday.
The only reason I ever watched these was because my dog goes absolutely insane watching these getting all excited seeing all the different animals. It was so cute and funny watching her all happy and excited being asked “what’s that?” wagging her little tail.

I feel like the reason Mike the mouse was killed off was because the directors and Illumination were offended by Seth not wanting to reprise the role.

The fate of Mike the Mouse sounds like the kind of plotline that Family Guy would do, to be honest
EDIT which is kinda fitting since Seth MacFarlane voiced him

The only scene I've watched is the gorilla voiced by Taron Egerton singing "I'm Still Standing". It's probably the main highlight of the film for me.

If there's Ice cream in Sing, who the actual fuck is getting milked?
I’m surprised so many people give Illumination’s anthropomorphic animal designs a pass, I think they look awful. Particularly Porsha, they literally gave her the most freakishly long legs they could. They learned nothing from when they designed Max’s owner from Secret Life. Same goes for her dad, they just put a wolf head on Gru’s body.
i think the internet would disagree with you on Porsha
_if you know what I mean_
and yea i literally noticed the wolf man kinda had Gru's body while I was watching it lmao.
How do you manage to be so lazy with your character design? Like what?
I understand the movie is lazy but it's good 👍
@@Imperviousdragon Good is spiderverse, this is the equivalent of a boiled potato in movie form. Perfectly edible (and cheap) but if it's your favorite or you call it good you're actually insane. Only good thing to come out of it is the scene where the lion points a gun at the screen.
@@demetria-n "good" is subjective. Not saying this movie is good (never seen it), just saying.
@@baalfgames5318 It's really not, everything has a way to be determined as objective.
Illumination would probably be then accused of relying on cliched animal stereotype jokes, let's be honest.
The reason is:
Design variety
While they dont use their animal traits it is aquick and cheap way of making characters stand apart from each other
yea like i dont mind that much that theyre anthro animals but I do wish they did more with their world.
I never understood why people would watch this when The Muppet Show already exists.
You are a true one!
Geez, you are so correct.
Miyamoto being there isn't a good thing
i have a good feeling there gonna make the toads and goomba's act like the minions

In regards to the music take that even the editor addressed, there is a franchise that uses licensed music ( that already banged) in a genius ways to further the story and characters, where the praise should also goes to the people that made the movies:
Shrek
Shrek is love, Shrek is life
What ar ye doin’ in ma swamp
Ha, it's illumination, they've already made it clear their just their for lazy money

Sing must be pretty high up on a list of "movies that didn't deserve a sequel but got one anyway"
Maybe the bright saturation gave you a headache
my friends and i actually watched this movie together pretty recently and we had a pretty decent time, it's nothing special i mean it's an illumination movie but we had fun watching it together. we spent a majority of the movie yelling at Mike and wondering just how much money this movie spent on getting the rights to use all those pop songs lol. we liked most of the characters well enough, like, obviously these movies aren't super good or anything but like- idk we had fun🤷 i would compare sing to a light snack food of a movie, like a rice krispies treat or something.
People have fun throwing shit at each other too.
One thing from the Sing 2 trailer, didn’t bother seeing the film I didn’t care, that stood out to me was that the trainer was a proboscis monkey. As an animal nerd, I thought that was interesting that they used a fairly obscure animal.

I just thought about this while watching the video; but with 7 main characters, Sing could’ve made a really good TV show.
that'd actually be really cool. it'd give alot more time to give different character interactions and flesh them out more. its why some movies fail greatly- they only have so much time to flesh out all their characters in a 1 hour 30 minute timespan
yeah that takes too much effort for Illumination
Sadly sing doesn't make enough attention or Money for it to happened but overall it might be a cute series I wouldn't mind watching but it should just be 7 main characters and maybe a few more like 2 and they could talk about their pass lives or something interesting we want to know like "wtf happened to porsha mom?

My home design teacher the other day was preaching to the lord that these movies are cinematic masterpieces and that no other movie even have a slimmer of a chance at being as good as these movies and that they all wish they could be these movies and refused to hear otherwise. Thinking about dropping her class
That's, uh, extremely pathetic, were those the movies they ever saw, if not then that's either a terrible joke or a terrible taste
What relation does your design teacher have with John Lewis?
It feels like a 9 year old wrote the screenplay because literally almost every scene has a curse word in it.
@@rmn070 I don't believe that every child will start using curse words all the time, right ?
I'd say the character designs look like those pre-made 3d models of cartoon animals you can buy on online asset stores.

I still find it both sad and hilarious how they cut "Biggering" from the Lorax because it basically reminded the company too much of themselves. XD
