  • In this video, I take your suggestions for THAI DRINKS from STREET VENDORS and try as many of them as I can find! It's no secret that one of my favourite things to do in Thailand is to get a Milo Yen from a street vendor. However, recently I asked YOU what drinks I should try for a video and you gave me SO MANY AMAZING suggestions!
In this video, I try Pinky Milk, Thai Ice Tea, O-Liang, Butterfly Pea and Lime - and a host of other suggestions you left on my TH-cam Community Post!
You will also need to stick around to the end for something I KNOW you're dying to see...I finally answer the question as to if I am still #TeamMilo
If I mess any names or drinks up, please let me know in the comments - and make sure you suggest what I should do next!
None of these sorts of vendors will have actual shop names, or locations on google maps - but this is close to where they are usually!

7:14 that one isn't Anchan-Manow, it's Cha-Manow (Lime Tea) Anchan-Manow is supposed to be purple and more soda-like. The butterfly part comes from the butterfly pea which the flower itself does have some resemblance to a purple butterfly. Also the tea used in Cha-Manow is the same kind of tea in Thai Milk Tea, minus the milk part, of course.

@@josieliftsthings I think the vendor misunderstand you, may be he heard 'เอาชามะนาว' (Ao-cha-ma-nao) which mean 'Can I have lime tea?' instead of 'อัญชันมะนาว' (Un-chan-ma-nao) which mean 'Butterfly pea and lime tea' and if you want to try น้ำเก๊กฮวย (Nam-kek-huay) and อัญชันมะนาว (Un-chan-ma-nao) most of coffee shop don't sell them but you can find them at convenience store or herb juice/tea shop at weekend market or street market, most of that shop had a lot, color full and big glass (some time plastic) jar fill with a varity of herb juice, Nam kek huay is the yellow one and Un chan ma nao is the blue-purple one and you can ask the seller to check if you get what you want before oder it. Formula for iced Milo if you leave Thailand you can make it at home forever.
    1. Condensed milk. If you are in countries with no condensed milk, just boil milk with sugar until it is reduced.
    2. Milk and a lot of Milo
    3. Wait till it is cool before putting ice.
Mixed 3 ingredients with shaker or whisker so you can have rich milo and you can have a bit of foamy texture.
I find that milo with hot water and condensed milk doesn’t taste as yummy. And milo with milk and sugar can’t give you rich creamy taste. It must be MILO + MILK + CONDENSED MILK.

I love Cha Manow. It’s like you get Pad Kra Prow in Thailand, if you know what I mean. It’s mostly in any places and if you don’t know what to drink, Cha Manow it is!
Another drinks that I use to have almost every morning is Iced Cha Nesttea Nom Sod. Basically, it’s like an iced milk tea but use tea powder from Nesttea brand. When you order it, it’s easy to confuse with Thai Milk Tea. You have to make sure that it’s Nesttea tea.

And I suggest you emphasizing “anchan” when you ask the seller because “cha manow” is a lot more common so they might mishear it if you say anchan manow quickly. Condense Sweet Salacca juice (Sweet salacca called as Sala in Thai) is major source of red color in Thai drink instead of strawberry.
    .
Nom Yen is Sala (Sweet salacca) mix with milk or condense milk.
    Nam Daeng is Sala drink.
Nam Daeng Soda is Sala soda.
    (Daeng means red.)
    .
Btw, Red Fanta and Mirinda are strawberry flavor.

I use to love Oval-tine, I find Milo tastes a little tinge more metallic than Oval-tine. Now, I think I prefer Yoklor (ยกล้อ...), which literally means wheelie but actually means O-liang + milk. The reason it's called "wheelie" because back in the day, there's the "Bike Brand" canned milk that was popular among coffee vendors and when the "Baristas" poured the milk, it looked like the bike on the can is doing the wheelie.
Coffee culture in Thailand was pioneered by Chinese immigrants, so the term "o-liang"(烏涼) is actually shorten from kopi-o-liang(咖啡烏涼) meaning black iced coffee. (it's Teochew dialect, so you can't use this term in Beijing nor Hong Kong, i guess...) and if you order "o-yua"(烏熱) you'll get hot black Thai coffee.
The Thai coffee (which actually, technically, in term of roasting technique, a Chinese coffee...) is roasted with sugar, butter or sometime, tamarind seed, hence the unique taste and smell, because the coffee grown in Thailand use to be 100% robusta which is not very delicious, so they pimped it up a bit....

Oh my you guys went INNNN haha. Love it.
Fyi, it’s really common, expecially among adults to ask for things to be “wan noii”. The extreme sweet taste is the allure for school kids. Most of these drinks are just that, a refreshing throwback to childhood (e.g. O-liang being most children’s first coffee).
I think a lot of comments got your covered pretty well regarding the butterfly pea thingy and the cha manao vs anchan manao incident.
Regarding the “brown sugar note” for o liang, it’s due to the brown sugar/caramel that’s incorporated during the roasting process.
As for the colour of the cha manao (lime tea), it’s the assam black tea. The soil here can produce pretty dark black tea.
As for the ovaltine “superiority” in Thailand, I think it’s the marketing. Ovaltine ads have always been much more inclusive and target multiple age groups, even among children, they aim for children in different environments.
Milo tends to focus on sporty kids on their ads. In fact most of their ads is about boys playing soccers.

Great comment! Yes for milo in Australia (we do have it, but it’s more a “homemade” drink, not on ice, and you don’t really mix the powder in too much, and it’s only with fresh milk!) it’s also advertised as a sports or nutrition thing. But in Thailand I’ve just found the flavour so much better with the condensed milk too!

It taste somewhat similar to butterfly pea lime but uses red sweet syrup instead of tea. There's also soda in it which makes it an extremely refreshing.
To me, as a Thai, it's the best drink to have for a hot day.
There's also another version called Green Lime Soda (Kiaw-Manow Soda) which uses green sweet syrup. It tastes very similar to Red Lime Soda but only different in scent coming from the syrup itself.

Some vendors offers “Milo pu-khao-fai” or milo volcano. It’s just a milo drink like the one you had, but they pack ice on the top, then put milo powder on top and sprinkle a bit of condense milk over milo powder so it looks like a volcano. Drinking a regular cold milo on a hot day is already nice as it is, but here’s the fun bit-you can scoop milo powder with some condense milk and eat it with a spoonful of crunchy ice. It’s hard to find but I love it! Definitely recommend if you see them on the streets.
