    This is what I love about the cameos in Legend of Korra. They make sense. They have a purpose. Katara mirroring what her grandmother said about leaving the South Pole makes complete sense. Of course, Aang would be there because Korra is dealing with some of Aang's mistakes. Why wouldn't Iroh offer guidance to another Avatar? Sokka didn't have to be the representative for the South Pole at the trial but it makes sense that he would be. They're not just thrown in there and they're not forgettable.

    Again, I just love this season. This journey to the spirit world is probably the peak of Korra's disstress, and u can see why. Everything that's been going on this season shoock the very foundation of what Korra new abt the world and herself. Even the comforting stuff like Wan's story was pretty earthshaking. So her literally transforming into a helpless child reflects her state very well. But she learned smth very important in ep10. Sometimes our own attitude can greatly change and influence the surrounding situation.

  • @dennysoto1236

    It's Star Wars logic. "Balance" isn't actually just balance because the darkness will always try to corrupt. It's stupid to call it balance, but I guess that sounds better than outright saying "balance is wiping out as much of the darkness as you can"

    • @alansmithee419
      @alansmithee419 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      In star wars. balance isn't about good and evil, but a sort of maintenance of the force itself.
      A light-side user can be evil, and a dark-side user can be good.
      But the dark side corrupts and damages the force by *forcing* it to do your bidding, rather than encouraging it to work with you. This has a negative impact on all living creatures of the force, including nature itself and even human souls.
      It could be a similar thing here. Vaatu damages the spirit world by his presence within it, harming the creatures there and all human souls who pass through it. We even see creatures becoming corrupt and aggressive against their will in the previous 2-parter. His very existence is damaging.
      It isn't so much a balance between good and evil so much as it is simply balance of the force/spirit energy itself. If it becomes unbalanced, it becomes volatile and damaging.
      Balance normally means a trade-off between two different things, but can also simply mean harmony and stability, and I believe that's what it means in these contexts.

    One of the reasons people don't like how korra expands the spirit world is that, like was questioned at the end of this episode, the balance of light and dark/yin yang is kinda ruined. The whole philosophy is that light and dark isn't good and evil, but just two seemingly opposing forces that are actually just apart of one another. Vaatu is instead depicted as just purely negative, like cartoonish evil, and his being sealed or utterly defeated is shown as necessary. That does kind of disappoints me, but overall I still really enjoy Korra.

    • @vindifference
      @vindifference 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      I don't recall the avatar universe going over the nature of light and dark in relation to good and evil in that sense. I know other shows/series do it, but I don't think we ever got that deep here.
      But in this case, whether you'd want to call it darkness or evil, the whole issue with Vaatu is that he represents a greedy nature seeking to corrupt everything and overall cause chaos/aggression. Which isn't necessarily evil depending on who's afflicted or how, but when left to his own devices that's how Vaatu grows, whereas Raava doesn't seem to grow by spreading influence, but rather through battling darkness head-on while they were intertwined. They seem to be a duality of proactive/reactive, and when in conflict, they both maintain a sizeable state, but when separated, one runs wild while the other is almost useless.
      So the alternative for balance with Wan was to make sure Vaatu isn't running wild, cause he's the only one that wants to achieve total domination. Meanwhile Raava is at least wrapped within a human so her influence only comes about when the avatar sees the need to battle with increasing amounts of darkness in other humans, which is altogether less than the amount of battling she used to do with Vaatu before. In a way, both spirits have been locked down, and can only extend their reach as far as a human or a tree will let them. I imagine if Raava were free to roam on her own she'd create an either overly complacent or stern dictatorship era in the world, which would ultimately end up being a bad thing. And she might even end up fading away until Vaatu grows in power again.

    • @luciuseclipse
      @luciuseclipse 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@vindifference Except there is nothing to suggest in the show that Raava might cause just as much of a problem as Vaatu if left unchecked. Vaatu is specifically characterized as little more than an evil dark force, his corrupting influence turning other spirits into dark spirits. Whereas Raava is only ever shown as reasonable and her presence cures spirits and returns them to their natural state. As I was trying to point out it abandons the initial eastern philosophy concepts that avatar’s spirit world was based on for a less complex traditional western view like that of Christianity. If they had given Vaatu a more reasonable or more fleshed motivation instead of just wanting to beat Raava and have uncontested control of the spirit world then maybe he could have been more interesting.

    Hey - asking if you guys could do a Starkid reaction series! Starkid is a musical company that produces high quality musicals and posts them entirely free on TH-cam!! Although they have material that spans over a decade, you guys would probably love the Hatchetfield series the most; It’s a collection of horror comedy musicals all set in the tiny town of Hatchetfield. The shows are as follows (and in order):
    • The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals - the town of Hatchetfield is invaded by an alien force that takes over people’s bodies and communes through song and dance. You follow the protagonist, Paul, a guy who doesn’t like musicals as he tries to survive without dying a horrific, musical death alongside his friends.
    • Black Friday - the town of Hatchetfield is once again the setting (as you realize that this show is set in an alternate timeline where TGWDLM never happened) and its Black Friday. There’s a toy called Wiggly that everyone is going insane over - literally. People start going genuinely insane for the toy, and you follow protagonists Lex and Tom as they try to stay alive inside a mall taken over by a Wiggly cult. Also there are nukes.
    • Nerdy Prudes Must Die - once again in Hatchetfield (alternate timeline strikes again), you follow 4 nerdy teens forced together as they accidentally murder their high school bully. But things start going not so well when the bully comes back from the dead, making good on his promise that nerdy prudes must die as he hunts down the teens that killed him intent on murdering them. Also someone fucks a ghost.
    • There is also a series called Nightmare Time that isn’t necessarily essential to watching the three main shows, but it is a collection of musicals all centered in Hatchetfield and its characters and adds a ton of “omg the thing!!” context,,,,,, especially for NPMD. If you guys get into the Hatchetfield vibes I really recommend checking out the proper timeline to watch the Hatchetfield musicals and Nightmare Time! I believe it’s TGWDLM then Black Friday then Nightmare Time 1 then Nightmare Time 2 then NPMD, but again pls fact check that if you decide to do so.
    The Starkid fanbase is sizeable, and the fans are DEDICATED. If they catch wind of you reacting to these shows, there’s a high chance they’ll all come running and be committed. Hope you do :)

    Im glad you guys are happy to see Iroh. Personally i had a massive disconnect from the character after finding out his original Voice Actor died. The voice being similar still doesnt do it for me. Plus after Iroh is placed in prison he just seems way different and his character doesnt light a spark in me anymore but everything leading up the "The Crossroads of Destiny" episode is peak Iroh.

    I recommend watching some videos from Hello Future Me for a lot of succinct explanation on why this all undermines the worldbuilding and themes and of the original but i also wonder why they couldn't have purused the fall out and other things from season 1 even with the awkward production. I like korra -- i think it's a solid 6.5/10 story. The wasted potential of characters and the undermining of the world and your own plot is hard to see though, even while all the production shit was occuring. Especially as a viewer who had to fight to even watch it online as it was airing and who /grew/ up with it and a:tla.
    Still better than most shows out there and there is nothing wrong with an average show -- ya gotta have some. But this? This really didn't have to be and you see the signs everywhere.

    Raava is after light and peace, Vaatu is after darkness and chaos. Together they bring balance, but now with Vaatu being locked we only got peace. Peace ≠ Balance

    • @Andrew-Bastin
      @Andrew-Bastin 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I hardly call the hundred year war and every other conflict that happened in the last 10’000 years “peaceful”, Rarva and Vartu’s balance of light and darkness mostly relates to the spirits and since Vartu was sealed and Rarva is for the most part stuck in the mortal realm bonded to a human neither had any direct influence on the spirits outside of convergence, so that’s pretty balanced.

    This more of a lowkey issue I have with season 2 that I don't see brought up much but it gets me so heated.
    The writers committed near full-on character assassination of Lin this season. Sure she's a stern grump but she was all-in on the trust with the new Team Avatar and was even straight up willing to work outside the law when it came to doing justice against what the Equalists and Tarrlok were doing to the city. And in this book, they basically walk back her growth and turn her into a shouting imbecile who not only buys into incompetence and lackadaisical detective work but straight up believes that Mako would suddenly turn to terrorist acts and theft on a massive scale...just to hammer the nail that Mako is "all alone" in his crusade to expose Varrick.
    Same goes for Asami and Bolin tbh, but those, while annoying that they aren't completely supportive of Mako or at least willing to hear him out, can at least be explained away by Varrick ingratiating himself to them both, Asami at least showing doubt or at least some realization when Mako is arrested that he may be onto something, and Bolin just being a himbo blinded by the opportunity for fame and status and willing to believe the good in Varrick rather than suspect ill intention (something that comes up later). And Bolin does immediately take action the moment he sees something up and apologizes. Lin. Gets. None of that. And it's frankly a crime to a cool character and all just a cheap way to play Mako as the innocent working againsy the system, when really the Varrick plot would have been exposed way earlier if everyone acted in character. Just out of character writing for the sake of lazy drama that doesn't even amount to anything really.

    Would’ve been smarter in my opinion to have Tenzin first help guide Korra & Jinora into the spirit world but letting them follow the rest of the journey on their own since his spiritual connection isn’t strong enough. Giving him some spiritual insight abilities over none would’ve been better for his character and you can still write a similar scenario with Korra & Jinora experiencing the spirit world, in this case it just felt like he was being shit on as a character.

    One of the reason this season is considered the weakest among them is because Avatar has always been about not being true evil and things just seeming good from another point of view or due to upbringing (like the firenation kids in ATLA, or Zuko and Azula), but this boils all struggles down to "pure good Raava VS pure evil Vaatu" and to many people it isn't compelling compared to the other stories because there is zero moral ambiguity and it actively takes away agency from characters because if they do something bad it's not their own choice it's Vaatu and when they do something good it's not their regret/remorse/goodwill it's Raava. This becomes clearer near the end of the season. And compared to other antagonists (no spoilers), Unalaq is just a little flat. There is no moral ambiguity but it's just "he's working with pure evil Vaatu so he is pure evil just because". It's not that it's bad, it's just that it's sub par for Avatar to do such a villain. Especially in comparison to the original series and the other antagonists, major and minor, you've seen and have yet to see.

    I don't like spirit world Iroh, it feels like pandering. No, Iroh should have just moved on into the next life, not being stuck on his ego forever.
