There's a lot of discussion in the comments about whether or not you need to go to fashion school to be a successful designer. The short answer is it depends on your goals and how you want to go about achieving them. I think the topic is a good one to discuss and I will make a video discussing fashion design career options soon!
Hi mam iam Praveena I am going to join in fashion design course on March I am interested to do but I don't know what's going to happen but really iam interest to do I watched many videos of your I learned many things I wish you to guide me
As a former high school teacher, I am impressed with your candid and honest talk about the schooling and the program. Oftentimes, high school students have little or no idea how much work is involved in earning a degree, especially a degree that requires an artistic eye and talent. Thank you!! I'd love to go to fashion school, but at 47 years old....I'll just enjoy your classes.
My mom has been in the industry since she was a teenager. When she was around 18 she worked as a sales rep for several clothing brands, and eventually worked up to getting her own showroom. Later on she fell into designing with a company that owns several lines, and became the head designer and also general business head of her own line. Now she runs two lines, kind of designs for both but also has designers who do the majority of it for her so she can focus on the merchandising and financial aspect. She's literally held every job though, from designer, to line sheet creator, to choosing fabrics, even to being the photographer and photo editor for photoshoots. And she never went to design school because she never intended to go into this industry. She got a degree in business and originally planned to go to law school, so she had to teach herself all the technical construction aspects of designing along the way. So if you're wondering if you absolutely have to go to design school to be a designer, that's not the case. However, it probably makes things a hell of a lot easier if you don't have to teach yourself all the things you'd normally learn in school because you will need to know it
I wish I could be sewing like that, it's annoying when u don't have the money, my sewing machine sucks 😂 it's geinuely so dusty and I think it rlly broken but I still manage to use it
Hi Zoe- I'm a high school fashion design/illustration teacher in a program that is brand new, and I don't have a fashion background at all. Your videos have been extremely helpful! Can you do a video that talks about pre-college fashion education? Like what would be the essentials for a high school student to know before entering design school, other than color theory and drawing basics?
Hi Zoe! on minute 7:50 you say something about those wanting to start their own company, please do a video on this!!! I want do start my own fashion label starting as a small business and doing everything local, is this even smart to do? I also need more information on what's best to outsource in that case!
Zoe Hong I can't belive, people is asking; Do we need to go to school😃😁😂? but, for those that really want to became designers this is what I learned at LATTC. 1; pattern making 1,2,3 2; sample making 1,2,3 3; sketching 1,2,3 4; draping 1,2,3 5; grading 1,2 6; bustier 1 7; screen printing Tailoring or Tailor 1; pattern making 1,2 2; sewing 1,2,3,4 Digital programs 1; Gerber 2; Lectra 3; Tuka Haven't take it 4; photoshop 5; illustrator
Hi Zoe, first of all, i want to thank you for sharing us all your knowledge about fashion industry. I don't know if you already have a video of this or not, but I would like to know the process of designing a fabric, how is it done in illustrator? which are the requirements?, where is it printed? which type of fabrics can be printed, etc? and how do you sell these designs? as you said in an earlier video, the field of creativity is wider. And I would also like to know your opinion about fast fashion, I really like to design and create but I also do not like the negative effects of the Fashion industry in the world, for those who are more concious about the environment, fair trade, etc, ¿how can we find a balance in this career? by the way, i love you :)
I feel very short changed from my BA listening to this. I went to Central St Martins London where very little in skills or design was taught on the course. Only thing you learn is to be self sufficient as you were left a lot to your own devices.
Hi Zoe. Am a fashion designer based in Kenya, and just watched this amazing video I've landed on while searching for some info about fashion school as a business and it has really opened up my mind. Keep at it. Thank you doll
Fashion degrees in my part of the world are broadly similar, we also throw in some marketing/business. One of them also focussed on picking a specialism for men's or womenswear at year 2
Hey Zoe! I’ve been watching your videos for over a year and I was wondering if you could make a video about the fashion career in general ( salary, where fashion designers work and what the average work hours are)
your videos have been so helpful and entertaining, I'd love to see a video on whether you need to go to design school to have a successful design career
AmAyANiQuOlE I can't belive, people is asking; Do we need to go to school😃😁😂? but, for those that really want to became designers this is what I learned at LATTC. 1; pattern making 1,2,3 2; sample making 1,2,3 3; sketching 1,2,3 4; draping 1,2,3 5; grading 1,2 6; bustier 1 7; screen printing Tailoring or Tailor 1; pattern making 1,2 2; sewing 1,2,3,4 Digital programs 1; Gerber 2; Lectra 3; Tuka Haven't take it 4; photoshop 5; illustrator
Miguel Ricardo I get it but traditional schools doesn't work for everyone. I'm currently going to school for fashion. But there are so many designers out there that haven't gone to school or dropped out and are very successful. So this question is kind of valid.
THE JSVGE No you don't need to go to school, stay at home and one day you'll be the best designer,is like a doctor or lawyer they just watch you tube videos.

I'm a long-haul trucker who is trying to understand American architecture and Civic art better, and Google send me this video about fashion design. I am glad I watched it, since I learned a lot.
HelloZoe, i´ve been subscribed to your channel for a while now and first of all i would like to thank you for how much you help all of us. i would LOVE to see a video on if you need to go to school to be a successful designer or not. Love your videos. Lots of love from Spain.
GlitteryCoco No you don't need to go to school, stay at home and one day you'll be the best designer,is like a doctor or lawyer they just watch you tube videos.

Miguel Ricardo well obviously is it better if you go to school, but theres also a lot of good designers that are self taught, i think thats what everyone mean when they ask about that
GlitteryCoco before I go to school I couldn't see the differences between brands. ask her, how much does it cost to go to a fashion school? You'll see if you tube is going to help you. You can watch 1000, 10000 videos of fashion but you always are going to ask for something else. When you go to school you don't have to ask, this videos are like tips, different way of doing the same thing because you have the base. Hope you understand this.
Thank you so much for shedding light on the importance of particular fashion design curriculum. I find that some Fashion Design programs don't offer certain classes that you've mentioned...... Smh
Hi Zoe! Thanks so much for this video! I found it really helpful, I always find your videos helpful and the ones in which you just sit down and talk are something that I’ve found very useful. This is really some priceless information and I thank you so much. I’m currently 14 and really keen and serious about fashion and I want to be ready before I have to hit the industry myself, so I’ve been learning as much as I can. If you have any advice for me do let me know (not just Zoe, anyone would be great) :). Once again, thank you so much, I love you! ❤️
Hi Zoe, I absolutely love your videos and love how informative they are! I would like to see the video idea you mentioned about how to start a fashion design business. I am researching how to start my own business making bespoke evening wear and I’d love to hear your insight! Thanks again! :)
I'm soo glad you touched on "fake it till you make it" software to use in the fashion industry. I struggled in learning the software @ the fashion school I attended because I didn't personally own a mac computer to keep up in the class😧😭. It would be great if you made a video what type of mac/pc to purchase (affordable/worth the purchase) and do u have any fav videos/websites to learn tutorials😊☺💻

Miguel I guess there are so many people who can not afford high paying schools and they desperately wants to learn.. This wonderful lady out there is guiding them to use their creativity in a positive way! Thanks zoie... keep making these wonderful vedios. Stay blessed and happy tc.
Hi Zoe you videos are toooooo good i love them!!!! Quick Question. Is your youtube channel a online teaching for fashion? Have you ever thought about teaching fashion for people who choose not to got to school on youtube?
OMG when you said "Take the liberal arts courses seriously so you don't sound like an idiot in professional emails"... THANK YOU! I am CONSTANTLY saying this to my students
i looked into going to school in japan before i decided on the u.s. i got tons of programs and info packets for bunka fashion school, and i was so looking forward to that, but i ended up having to live at home.
Too bad! I've heard so many good things about Bunka. I heard they teach their grad program in English and if that's true, I would love to teach there for a semester or a year. I love Tokyo and could see myself living there for a short while.
Your tutorial are very informative I really love your drawings love to ask this questions three task that is perform by a fashion designer what is a marker specifications thank you
Zoe, I am a sophomore at DAAP, UC. I have been watching your videos for months now for complementary education and I always wonder what school did you go to? Do you think that the school you went to prepared you for the real world of fashion?

Hi Zoe! I am looking for schools to apply to for fashion design...however, I’m finding that some of these programs require a very elaborate portfolio that necessitates skills that I haven’t learned yet. It seems like you have to know everything in order to apply, but that’s the whole reason I’m applying. I’m confused and frustrated because this is a life-long passion & dream. What should I do?
Every school has different portfolio requirements and some schools don't require a portfolio so you need to keep researching until you find the right school for you. It can be tedious but it's a big decision so take your time. Or you can take some classes at a local junior college and learn the skills you need for your portfolio and apply after you take these classes. Good luck!
If I’m taking workshops like levels level one is 3 month workshop program is that enough or I need a bachelor degree in it to find good job opportunities
Zoey I have a very hard time rendering boots with a black market in my sketches do you have any tips for using black markers . Because when I youse them a lot of the times the black just gets rid of any details in my illustrations. Please help me!!!!
Hi zoe, My name is Anamika, I'm from India. I want to ask that i know almost about half of the FD courses ,all the topics and subjects and I'm learning at home from TH-cam,books and practically also, Can I become a fashion designer or get job in that field?
Is there a difference between fashion design and costume design? I would like to learn how to make costumes but I don't know if by choosing costume design I would be opting for something less demanding in the mastery of sewing techniques.
My dad just tried to convince me that music school is better tha fashion school, and that fashion design is a waste of time (crushing my dreams as usual) but bitch how different is the music curriculum from the fashion design curriculum💀

On a less relevant (but, not entirely, because... "fashion") I like that plum lipstick on you. More flattering than the cherry red you often use.
Hey Zoe! I’ve been watching your videos for over a year and I was wondering if you could make a video about the fashion career in general ( salary, where fashion designers work and what the average work hours are)
Hey stillstephanie, I'll try. That's a lot of info to unpack so I'm going to have to figure out how to organize it all.
your videos have been so helpful and entertaining, I'd love to see a video on whether you need to go to design school to have a successful design career
This got me super hype to apply for Savannah College of Arts & Design!!!
Good luck!

Can you please do the video on if you need school to be successful in the fashion industry? Thank you. I love your videos

I was so focused that at one point I found myself nodding at every word Zoe is saying, great video! THANK YOU, AMAZING ZOE!
I'm not sure I can do a comprehensive video like that, since that's not really my field of expertise but maybe a tips/food for thought video...
That would also be a great help, I hope that there is enough demand for such a video ^_^

Thanks zoie... keep making these wonderful vedios. Stay blessed and happy tc.
Believe me other schools/unis don't do half of what you describe. Some of them are overrated
I plan on attending Lattc next spring! Was you satisfied with the fashion program?
Love your videos 💕
I’m learning a lot
Keep it up 👍🏽
Thank you Zoey! This is so helpful.
gracias por compartir tus conocimientos!! muy interesante!!! a la espera de mas videos con este
Hi Zoe you videos are toooooo good i love them!!!! Quick Question. Is your youtube channel a online teaching for fashion? Have you ever thought about teaching fashion for people who choose not to got to school on youtube?
I used to teach in university. I don't have plans for teaching online beyond these videos, if that's what you're asking.

You’re so appreciated. Ty❤️
How do you take back time?😫😫😫It sounds so amazing. I wish I went to fashion school when my time was right.
Hi miss Zoe- Must you learn how to sew in order to get into fashion design schools? And on average, how long does it take to sew?
Every school has different application policies, some will require it, some won't.
Zoe, I am a sophomore at DAAP, UC. I have been watching your videos for months now for complementary education and I always wonder what school did you go to? Do you think that the school you went to prepared you for the real world of fashion?
we want more fashion videos please thank you
If i want to be good at creating quick sketch designs only, do i need to go through doing design process even just for practicing on my own?
No, learn sketching.
Do you have to know how to sew before going into a fashion program?
Depends on the program.
I study apparel design but I only took 2 illustrator class . I’m on my final year. They are more focused on sewing I don’t know why.
I am only 13 and have been wanting to do fashion designing since 11. Does this make sense? Should I go on or am I just a kid? I need guidance
You could deffinently go into fashion design. I'd say once you get into high school take as many art classes and design classes as possible and do your research! You can always change your mind for the future.

Good luck!
If I’m taking workshops like levels level one is 3 month workshop program is that enough or I need a bachelor degree in it to find good job opportunities
no

Is there a difference between fashion design and costume design? I would like to learn how to make costumes but I don't know if by choosing costume design I would be opting for something less demanding in the mastery of sewing techniques.
My dad just tried to convince me that music school is better tha fashion school, and that fashion design is a waste of time (crushing my dreams as usual) but bitch how different is the music curriculum from the fashion design curriculum💀
