Zoe Hong I m 20 yo boy from India and I pursued bachelor of arts in political science . my parents wanted me to go into Indian Administrative Services, I tried to take classes for it but I knew that I don't want that I wanted to go into designing only. Somehow I hav convinced them to allow me to pursue design . I am currently preparing for entrance of design colleges in India. Thanx a lot for encouraging ma'am :)
Zoe Hong I’m 33 I have fine arts degree that’s not fashion so I just signed up for Parson’s fashion essentials certificate program. I’m so excited. I also started creating my first collection of made to order pieces for bridal and evening wear! YOUR channel has motivated me to follow my dreams! Thank you!
VIDEO REQUEST: How much should you charge as a freelance designer??? A single drawing vs. A small collection vs. A larger collection? illustrations vs. tech? per drawing? by the hour? Please help Zoe! :-)thanks
Does a degree in fashion designing ensure a good paying job?..if not, can I work as a fashion designer at fashion houses without a degree in fashion designing?
Hi Zoe! I'm 42 and started my Fashion Design college on July this year! I'm the oldest at my class, and I don't care!LOL I'm learning a lot more than when I was at college during my 17... Thinking about my own business and learning not only with teachers but with my classmates too! Love to be around them! Thank you so much for all your videos! You were one of the people that inspired me to choose this career ! And it's been wonderful!!!
I went back to my degree a few years ago (got sick and had to stop again) my age was never a barrier and there were lots younger and a few older in the arts section. Passion is timeless, it's never too late to chase your dream :) I'm hoping to finish my degree when I'm well enough - in the meantime the university of TH-cam suits me fine
Artlo Crafts Studio Congratulations!! I just turned 42 years old last month and I’m finally going to pursue my fashion design dream. Been busy raising kids and not making time Hope it goes well for me!
Im 37 now, i always wanted to switch my career to fashion designing from my engineering graduation, but didnt happen🥺...and now its been a year im doing a certification in FD, wish to have a nice start when the pandemic subsides...
I went to an art school for Fashion Design when I was 38. Unfortunately didn't even get to finish my first year due to lack of finances. (It was during the Recession. Then I worked in a high end Bridal Boutique and fell in love with Bridal gowns and the business. So much inspiration there. Then later I took a break from bridal for a while for personal reasons. Just this year I started a new job in Bridal and I feel like it's now or never with me. I'm 49 and working on my first Bridal Gown collection. It's scary, but also so beautifully fulfilling. I don't think you are ever too old to start a new Dream and make it your own, no matter what happens in the end. At least you went for it.
How’s your bridal collection going? I’m a fashion designer and decided to pursue the bridal gown custom made field since I’ve been working with the alterations.
I started fashion school at 29. I have asked this myself and my peers so many times. They all look at me like I’m demented. I feel your 30s and 40s and even older, are the perfect age to start a creative career. Ugh this video is life thank you
YASSS! I’m Going back after having babies at the age of 39 ! Soooo excited and I feel like I can handle it better now at an older age. I’m so much more interested in the technical aspects instead of being obsessed with the job I’ll get afterwards and I honestly would be thrilled to get a job at any level at any company. Unlike in my 20’s when I started I have zero ambition to become some rockstar fashion star now. I would be over the moon to get a job designing kids wear at Kmart - as an example!
@@olivialovesdesign this is so cool the best of luck to you. I am from Australia also. Oh and four years later, after having an awful first experience, I am now fashion designer manager for one the worlds leading alternative brands. Follow your dreams. Work hard. Be stubborn. It will happen.
THANK YOU MS ZOE!!! I'm 57; I got accepted to FIDM like a gajillion years ago and the (then) wife said I couldn't go, we couldn't afford it... then the next spring guess who was back in school for the FOURTH time?! Then she BAILED ("I don't need you anymore", she literally said that) 10 mos. from getting her degree (in Psych, go figure), and suddenly I'm a single dad so now I really can't afford it. But here I am with a portfolio full of 30+ years of work, I found your videos, and I'm actually taking steps to get my stuff online!!! Still gotta' figure out how to Market said portfolio to the right audience, but I'm confident now that I'll get THERE too! Thank you!!!
Hey, you're not alone. I am 56 female and went to FIDM straight out of high school. Before I turned 18yr old my portfolio was chosen to go to Paris. I didn't go because I didn't think I was good enough (I was not confident) and listened to the wrong people saying fashion was not a stable career. I went to a "traditional school" 7 yrs later majored in Sociology and then taught for 10 yrs BORING!!! I have gone back several times and had several different careers and look what video I'm watching. I know the response is years later and I hope your following your dream!!!
That's amazing! I'm 46 and didn't go to East London for a Fashion Design and Marketing Degree 28 years ago! Had a life changing accident a year ago and thought lifes too short go for it so starting with a few short courses to build a portfolio to go for it ! It'd scarey but so exciting! X
Hi Zoe! I'm turning 60 in 3 weeks, and still dreaming of starting a small clothing line. I've dabbled around with it for years, beginning at about age 16! I think it's now or never, and I SO appreciate your videos for instruction and inspiration and general support. You area wonderful teacher. Would love to hear back from you. I'm overwhelmed, and don't know where to begin.
I learned yesterday that Colonel Sanders didn't start KFC until he was in his 60s! I will be doing a starting a business video in the future, but in the meanwhile, I would recommend you start a business plan and get a book on business laws in your state/country/etc. Good luck!
Love it! I went to school for fashion design/illustration, but right after graduation, my father passed away from cancer. You could say that sent me into a tailspin and life took me far away from that path. I’m now 45 and ready to hit it once more. I’m starting over and relearning everything. I serviced my sewing machine, dusted off my old books and I’m ready to roll! I can’t afford school at this time, but I’ll see what happens down the line.
I'm 56 and am going back to my first love: plus sized fashion! As long as you're breathing, you have another day and another chance... I'm relearning everything, too..and that's ok... We're living in the best time ever with regard to promoting a line...social media has changed the face of marketing! It's leveled the playing field so that the smallest designers can have a presence right along side the biggest fashion houses... It's not easy, but it's simple...
Kristina Grant started last September and a week later dad was admitted with suspected lung cancer. Stress is not a big enough word and all the things you mentioned I concur. 😟I won't give up as stressful as it is but thanks for making a 54 year old feel more on track 🙁👍
Good for you, Kristina! So great to hear you're getting back into it! I'm 41 and getting back into my groove as well. I lost my dad in June to cancer and the hardest was the 7 year battle. I completely understand how that sent you into a tailspin. I would love to see your work.
I think it's never too late to start. It doesn't mean that there isn't a harder slog for any career if you're doing it later in life, just because old habits can be hard to break and there's definitely a real prejudice about older people in "younger" professions, but anything we want to do that's worthwhile will have some uphill battles.
You are amazing I’ll be graduating in December for fashion design This will be my second degree in America Third degree in my life I’m 38 You give me hope
I went to fashion school at 40 to work toward my AAS degree, then at 52 to get my BS online. I really enjoyed it to the fullest extent. It was worth it! Age is a number. You can do anything you put your mind to. Learning keeps you younger! 😀
Thank You!!! Thank You!!! Thank You!!! I am 33-years-old and have worked in the human service field for 10 years. I am O.V.E.R. it!! So I have decided to pursue my dream by planning to enroll in Fashion Design by next Fall. I am scared of the uncertain but I don't want to get older and think of the 'should have, could have, would have.' Thank You Zoe!!! I needed that!!
I am a mother of 5. We just saw our youngest child graduate in July this year. I am now putting together my portfolio and application to IFA Paris. You are helping me so much! I am ... 61!! I am obsessed and don't give a flingin flangin fluck about whether I will be the 'oldest' student in the class. Thank-you for your inspiration, your expertise, and the time you put into your videos. I am learning so much!
Im 50 years old and I'm still hope to launch my fashion brand name. You just need to have creativity and know where are you going to place your collection what is your target market. Mine is overall I want to design for everybody
I am an investment banker (25) and I hate what I am doing. Its just what my parents wanted. I have started with baby steps teaching myself how to draw and next year I want to apply to school. I want a career shift. Fashion is something I love, and everyday I make it a point to sketch, no matter how tired I am after office, because as you said #practicenotmagic. Thank you Zoe, u are a lovely human :)
I'm 39 and just stared learning how to sew. My mom is a retire Master seamstress age 70 and teaching me. Her Husband is a Master tailor. They both stared around the age of 14-17 years old, I'm Lucky to have so much experience teaching me. She gives me thing to sew little by little, and Small projects.. I stared making my own shirts in about 4 weeks. I still have trouble putting the sleeves on...." My guest I get nervous on the turns, I still need to build up more skills, I will get there." I want to make my own yamamoto type of shirts but my own twist for me. I think as long as someone is still alive just do it!
Just turned 40 this year, moved away from hometown for the first time and left my job after 18years, starting fashion school this fall and this video boosted me up, thank you!
Thanks Zoe! I'm 55. I have worked in aerospace for 25 years and have an engineering degree. Discovered my love for fashion gradually...eventually making prom dresses for my daughter and others. I am working on making this a second career. The local junior college (SF Bay Area, West Valley College) and videos like yours are making that possible! Anyway...thanks for all you do!
I started my current career in my late 50s. I loved being that person that younger women/men looked at with that doubtful (maybe it was ''pitiful'') look, thinking I was never going to make it because I was older. Screw convention. Blow them out of the water. Success, when someone thinks you're too ancient to succeed, is soooo much fun.
hey Zoe, just watched this Video, and I would probably qualify as the oldest design student! I started in sept 2020 At 59 years and I am now in my third semester at a college design school in Vancouver Canada. Yes its a ton of work but i love it and it saved my sanity during Covid. Half my classes are at school (labs) AND half online. I am just finishing my first mini collection for my final illustration project and your work helps me all the time. thanks, keep up the good fight.
Hi Zoe I have worked in the Prison Sector for 21 years and I have decided on a career move, I am now 42 and I believe it is absolutely never too late to follow your passion and fulfill your dreams. Good luck everyone who is in this industry... Enjoy what you do. Zoe, I love your work!
I just found your videos. ❤️ I am 56 and currently taking my first classes in fashion design. I’ve worked in accounting for 30 years and have been sewing over 40 years. I’ve always wanted to do this and i am so inspired and enjoying and looking forward to where this may take me. My favorite quote. “It’s never too late to be who you might have been”. George Eliot
Zoe, I'm really grateful for this. You've been my hero since I started to discover your channel and you are the best fashion teacher for me. I'm 22, have graduated as an Industrial Engineer and oftentimes I feel like I'm already too late to give my all to fashion. I've always been in love with fashion and has always been dreaming to be one of the most successful fashion and costume designer in the fashion industry, building my own fashion house to spread a lot of messages, but my parents didn't want me to fully jump into this cliff. So I'm thankful for you, you've always been my biggest motivator and driving force when I'm not feeling confident to pursue this. I hope you to be so much more healthier, happier, and successful, my professor! I'm your number 1 fan lol
I’m so glad I came across this video. When I was 15, I wanted to be a fashion designer and I gave up cause I thought it wasn’t for me. For years I thought about it and I wanna go for it! I’m currently 24 and have a daughter now but this video gave me an extra push! Thank you Zoe💛 (we have the same name btw)
I’ve been feeling like I’m too old also. I recently finished college and am eager to start my business. This video helped remind me to stay positive and keep moving forward!
I'm 27 lost my jib last year due to the pandemic. I started fashion school this year, I am the oldest in my class 😂 but I don't doubt my decision I feel like I am where I'm supposed to be and I wish I studied fashion initially. I went the traditional route made my parents happy but now its time to do what I want to do😊
I just turned 30 a month ago and I have always loved fashion and film so I decided to put my two loves together with pursuing costume design. I really needed this video because I was so worried. All of the kids I see in fashion school are like... 19.
I'm starting at 31! I did a 2 year technical program that focused more on construction, patternmaking, and tech packs instead of drawing. A lot of people in the program were older than me and they're getting jobs post-graduation. Honestly, the program was so rigorous I could not have done it at 20!
BeingLauren . Hi there! I'm in my late 20's and seriously considering going for a accelerated, more technical program like the one you mentioned. Could I ask you where you went for this 2-year program ?
@@gglaurengg Yay! I've been a pattern maker for nearly 40 years. IMPO, 2 year technical programs are the best. SCC is good as is LA Trade Tech. Contrary to what most people think, those two schools have more credibility than FIT.
Well thanks for this video. To sum it up I’ve been a cosmetologist for 21 years and I decided to go back to school. I graduated at 40 (May17)! So deciding which path to follow is where I am now. I work retail part time until my children graduate in ‘19. Then I can really pursue and relocate because I’m in a super small town! I’m encouraged!
I'm 48 and I started a fashion course last year (Burgo fashion institute in Milan-Italy). I work for an english brand which sells kids clothes and in particular I make handsmocked dresses for little girls. Maybe it's too late at this point to learn, but I want to give it a try 😊✂️ (Anyway...I started running marathons at 40 ...so maybe it's not too late 😄)
i'm nineteen coming on twenty and i'm rushing through my ba because i've been out of school a full year and i'm worried i'm falling behind in life but this is reassuring
I've spent over 10 years being torn over fully taking the plunge into fashion. This video helped me make up my mind once and for all. It also helps that I don't panic like during my youth a few decades ago. The vision is much clearer and my discipline is finely honed into a very formidable force that more than compensates for being older. Now to go about furthering my design education to match my sewing skills and and start with a shoestring and slowly build up.
I was always passionate about cloth/fashion as long as I remember.. I learn to hand sew my doll clothes since first grade. Due to people told me fashion being "not a real job" back in 2010s... i decided to take "normal" major in Uni. I was miserable studying Marketing/Management. I work various jobs and for some reason end up in Animation. But Im a cosplayer and keep making my own costume.. learning so much about cloth/techniques. I'm now almost 30 and finally start my own costume design business. And yes with networking/connection. Im able to get projects for TV commercials, outfit public events and costume for gaming events... its never too late. 🥰
OMG my story is totally like that. I've always wanted to learn fashion designing & pursue a career in fashion. But my parents just wouldn't listen to me. They won't help unless I go to a “regular college”. So I ended up going to one. And I SUCK at it. OMG I suck so bad like you wouldn't believe. So I started trying to get help from the internet (seeing there's no other way). AND I found you Zoe! 😁💖 Gosh I'm so glad that I found you. I just loooooooooooooove what you do. 👍💕
I needed this video. I'm 41 and I teach English in Tokyo. The fashion in Japan is AMAZING my grandmother was a seamstress and my dad taught me to sew a long time ago. I love Vera Wang... love your videos too🤗🌏🇯🇵 thanks again for this post.
I have carpel tunnel too. between doing alterations all the time and too much computer. I haven't had to wear my brace as much lately because I went down to one job. your brace blends in nicely with your blouse. I almost didn't see it
I was fairly old when I got into fashion since it was my second major after I had burn out from my previous profession. My mom actually convinced me to try it out at first I didn't want to because it was expensive and competitive. But eventually I fell in love with it. It's still for me but I've risen from a lot of challenges and that will not stop me from my journey😊. Thank you for your inspiring videos and I like it that you are very real.
OMG!! I really needed this. I am only 20 and I actually don't want to go into fashion but into an art school and I'm always so hard on myself... Most people say they've been drawing since they could remember and I feel like I wasn't meant for this path because I just recently found my love for drawing. And the way you said that as well, and I look at how accomplished and happy you are that you didn't give up, inspires me! We're all different, there's no box we should be in, it's better to have different paths towards something. Thanksssss
wow! so needed this. I started studying fashion at 28 years old. now I'm 32 and just submitted my final collection. I really worked hard for that and it was one of well made collections. but my supervisor (who is 4 years younger than me) don't believe in starting late and always insulting me. everybody said my collection was great except her. she looked it like it was crap. she gave me low mark for my project and it was very hurtful because after working hard on that and be treated like that. luckily other lectures didn't think like that theyre marks were not so bad. but she is in charge of other things like job opportunities and opportunities like showing at fashion week and she deleberately left me out of all those. and the ugliest thing is she did my research for her Masters and blamed me for copying her. she really made me doubt my career in fashion and feels like I'm not worthy for fashion. I'm in really low point right now. you're words did uplifted me little bit to know that I'm not alone.
Sunny yeah it is horrible. I cried o many days for this injustice. but the thing is I'm worried if I do that she will take revenge on me more. since the senior lecturer is on leave these days she is the one who is acting on her behalf. other lectures are all new and cannot go over her. i can complain to dean or head of the department but there not fashion related so they don't know how to evaluate creativity based works and she can always come up with something and they will have to believe her because they don't know the process.
Believe me. This happens everywhere. If you are so telented, there are always ppl either really like you work or jealous and hate you work. What I have been telling myself is that dont take it personal and knowing that you are talented and can do so much better that them. If she is so telented and confident, she wouldn't be here teaching and treating you unfairly. So be confident and happy because you will do great in this career.:)
How have things worked out for you...? Many ppl commented this...each one is a good point...just take care, sounds like pure competition and jealousy going on. Keep up the work! Working through the hard times is everything. ❤
I am 27 Yrs. Old. I am a mom of a 4 yr old daughter, almost 5. I am currently in school for fashion design, going half time.. I'm so glad i watched this video. I am a little over 25% done with my degree, which I've been consistently working on since 2014. My daughter starts school soon, and we will be entering her into different extracurricular activities as well. I will also be taking a position at my significant other's dry cleaners as a seamstress. So, will be needing to take a break from school. I was so nervous, because in the fashion industry everyone is so young. I have about 1 more semester to go, and then will be on a break for a year or two. By the time I make it back to school, I will be reaching 30, if not already there. I was starting to feel doubt. Like, Am i wasting my time? Will I be too old to be in the fashion industry? Will people take me seriously since I am starting so late? your video has eased my mind, and made me say F it! I'm going to stick with the plan, and proudly make my mark in my 30's no shame in my momma game! Life happens. And I think if I were to give up just because I thought I was not young enough for the industry, then I would have lived in a state of what-if?
Honestly, I'd say something in my cover letter like I got my degree while working and taking care of a small child. I am basically Superwoman and can do anything you could dish out at me.
Thanks Zoe, just needed that extra boost of confidence, I'm 37, almost done with fashion classes, but sometimes I feel like I'm so behind for someone my age. But like you said, it's how hard you go at it!
I love how you make things look so easy. I was struggling all my life to get out of my comfort zone and follow my dream career. Last year I’ve applied for AMFI (Amsterdam Fashion Institute) at Fashion Management and was accepted. I never thought or imagined the institute will consider my application with 1200 applicants and 450 available seats. And yet I scored well enough to enter the school. But it happened and as of September I’ll be a student working on my 3rd degree. I am 38 btw, and life is making sense again ;). And I love your videos and how natural you are at passing on your knowledge. Please, keep doing a great job! You are helping so many people. THANK YOU😘
so uplifting!! i'm 38. and already started hard 😁 fashion course first on schedule then fashion school. practicing every day with your channel. thank you Zoe!!! and i love your sense of humour 😁😁😁
Definitely older people treat their school project differently too those in their 18s. They take everything so serious and willing to spend a lot of money and effort and they also stress out more in my point of view. Lol Its a competitive industry and the older they are the more stressed they are. This is what happenend in my school.
Thank you so much, Zoe! I was just thinking about asking you this very question today and as I was scrolling through looking for your next video to watch, here it is! I’m so excited! You have no idea what having your channel as a resource means to a 57 year old fabric-nerd-sewist-designer who dreams of getting a line off the ground! I know, I know, dreams don’t work unless you do, so off I go- but I had to say thank you first!!!
I’m 30 y.o now and I started pattern and fashion design courses 1 year ago. I want go to the university for fashion design diploma. I’m soo happy. I started late but I will make real my dreams in a few years 🎉
Thanks Zoe , I ever thought it’s too late or not . No one care age in this year. The portfolio or shop run on the online platform. Not anyone care to ask age of designer.
Your videos are super inspiring Zoe! I've just started a new career to save up for my art education and it's nice to know that there's success to be had in the fashion industry regardless of your age! I hope your wrist gets better soon, and thanks for sharing all of your knowledge with us here on TH-cam!
This is so amazing!!! You are really inspiring people. I’m 40 ... listening to this I definitely feel positive and motivates me to achieve my dreams. Big Thank you to you!!
I am 17. And Indian girl and so my parents want me to pursue medicine because I am good in academics. But I so want to pursue fashion designing and I love sketching! :'(
preetha nath I know what you mean! I did BCA in 2010 from DU,I have worked for TCS and IBM for 7 years now. I quit my job this year and I am starting my diploma course in fashion technology this coming Monday. Unfortunately I don't have time to afford a 3years course,so I'll go for 1year thing
This is so relatable! I'm 18 and from bangladesh. My parents want me to become a doctor or an engineer because I'm good in academics, but I want to be a fashion designer😭.....I'm feeling very helpless.
preetha nath story of my life. Qualified physiotherapist going back to study fashion at 29, cos I was conditioned to believe the brilliant ones should study medicine, engineering, or law.
I am an accountant for 10+ years and I’m considering to change my career to design of some sort (fashion is high on my list...). Thanks for the encouragement!
You've made me laugh so hard:))) I see myself in the stories you shared:) I never asked you the question in the title of the video, but for sure it came to my head several times...especially when things were not going that well for me in the designing field. So again: Thank you and love you lots.
Similar story here, I was going to apply for design school but I’d had some really bad teachers and I lost my passion before reclaiming it in my last year of school but I was so far behind and I was killing accounting in high school so I went to uni for finance because it was practical and I didn’t have my parents to fall back on. Now I like my current job and there’s a lot of skills that will likely be very useful in a career in fashion so I might pivot when I’m properly established
On a day like today I NEEDED THIS WHOLE ENTIRE VIDEO. I really want to start (33 will be 34 in October) But I wasn’t sure if I should because of that... Thank you I really enjoy watching your videos and your content... Stay blessed Zoe
OH THANK BLOG. I’m 35 and I’ve started fashion school and quit twice, and now I’m homeschooling my teenage kids and felt like I’d have to give up my dream. Thanks Zoe!
Two month ago, I started fashion design school at Toronto Film School. It's a part-time program and it's all online. Maybe you could find a way to make it work, too. I'm in my 50's and thought I'd be 25-30 years older than everyone else, but I'm not even the oldest! Most are in their early 20's, and I have 2 women in my class who are in their 60's!! One of our instructors told our whole class that we're not too old
I am retiring and taking a illustration degree with the Open College of the Arts UK. Been thinking for a while about taking a arts degree after watching Zoe youtube channel I was convinced.
I've been wanting to be in fashion since I was four, but now I'm over ten times older! I took that parental be safe in your school choices degree and career path. I decided I try to go back to fashion school, but I can't quit my regular job because I have a household to run. I noticed that all of the programs are offered during the day, making it impossible to work full time and attend the classes... In that respect yes I'm too old because there are no programs available to me, and I live in a big city L.A., so go figure... I really don't know what to do. I just keep trying to teach myself... but as you stated in another video it's extremely difficult to teach yourself anything without support and guidance... anyway.. :'(
Los Angeles Trade-Tech College in downtown L.A. has a 2-year Associate in Arts or a 1-year Certificate of Achievement in Fashion Technology program that is geared to students attending college in the evenings and on Satrudays. Check their website out. I've also attached their PDF program overiew: college.lattc.edu/docs/catalog/factsheets/Fashion_Tech.pdf Good luck!
I took graphic design and economics and photography in high school, I've been fashion drawing ever since I was 11 but I still have much more work to do. I'm 19 (well 18 but turning 19 in three weeks) and I'm starting a sewing class in a few weeks to properly learn how to sew for the first time. I was scared that I'm too late because I never took any direct fashion classes in high school, but graphic design has helped me immensely with my drawings and economics has helped with the business side of fashion. I'm studying journalism at university right now but when I graduate I want to study fashion design or communication design at university (I got accepted to the top design program in my city!). Hopefully I go far and it's nice to know that 19 is actually quite young (probably cause I compare myself too much to teen fashion designers on Project Runway Junior and such LOL). Hopefully I can go far or at least create a small fashion company in the next seven years or so.
Honestly I've wondered the same thing. I'm in my 4 year study fashion and I'm 33 this year. And really did think or believed that maybe I'm starting to late.
I presume you mean start their own company? Because lots of those fashion designer have internships and then low-level jobs in fashion companies in their twenties and then slowly rising up the ranks in their thirties before creating their own fashion company in their 40s or 50s
This is so inspiring and heartwarming Zoe! It's basically like "the story of my life". To summarize: I have always wanted to become a fashion design and I so so badly wanted to go to art school after elementary school, because I knew from there I could get the training necessary to prepare for fashion design university. My parents opposed and said I am supposed to become some kind of manager of something, a proper "intellectual" career, and not a "pff, seamstress". (Btw for my dad Dior, Chanel and a seamstress were the same thing, not meaning to offend the profession of seamstress of course). Then life went on and although I would have spent all my free time making dolls clothes (I like to sew and drape more than I like to draw), I had to go into business academy for college. I chose marketing because it was the most creative think I could do in that university. Then a master's degree in Advertising and PR and then a PhD in Communication (because other than sewing and designing I like to talk much lol). All this while working in marketing full time. Then I ended up living in Milan because I had met my husband who is Milanese, I came here with a scholarship from the EU for the last 8 months of my PhD, and then after finishing Phd I searched in vain for a marketing job in Milan for 6 months. In the meantime I had opened an Etsy shop with a few dress designs and the rest is history. I am now 33, I have never got a fashion design degree, but I somehow ended up being a designer through tons of individual study, private classes and real life, hands on work experience building my own label. I started this adventure 5 years ago, I was 28. Now I'm 33, I have been having my own atelier in Milan for 2 years (after 3 years of sewing dresses in my living room), I create and sell dresses up to 2500 euros each, and I STILL don't have that damn fashion degree although it's one of my greatest desires. For me it might just be really too late to get a real fashion design degree, I simply don't have those 3 years to spend on it while having a business at the same time, and I couldn't pay the tuition fee AND run my business (not to mention maybe having a kid as it would be about time soon). But I did apply for a full scholarship for a 9 month fashion design intensive course in one of Milan's most sought after fashion schools. I'm still waiting for the results and hoping for the best. Anyway sorry Zoe that I took over your comments section with such a self advertising comment, but it was because I wanted to share that I totally resonate with what you are saying. It is never too late to study fashion or to become a designer if you learn to prioritize and make sacrifices in terms of time and money. (Yep it's still me, the one who bought your entire shop lol. You can tell I am a maniac by now 😍)
Yeah, life is like that sometimes. People's lives do not run on a straight trajectory. They're filled with random roadblocks and surprise twists like meeting the love of your life who happens to live in another city (that happened to me too!) And a degree isn't the most important thing. Good luck with your label!
Thank you for the video. I moved to the US a year ago. Im 27. I do hav associates in Design but wanted to go to college and complete my bachelors. I felt im too late to start here from an entry level job.
I really love your channel. I can relate to this issue regarding age. I am just beginning or at least wanting to begin a career (hopefully) in fashion and I am in my 40s already. Will I switch fulltime? We never know. Maybe. But for now, I wanted to step in. I'm a chef (my second career after switching from social work almost a decade ago) and I love what I'm doing but I also would like to fulfill my longtime dream to become a fashion designer and start my own clothing line (it's more for my daughter now - it's like I want to leave her a legacy or a business since at 12 she's already into fashion). If my age had bothered me, I would not have enrolled in an online class to get a diploma in fashion design. I would not be here on your channel and watch your videos. So, yeah, I also believe that I am not too old to start my fashion career. Thanks for all your wonderful videos. And because I am learning all the basics and fundamentals of fashion design through an online class, you have been my teacher/mentor. It is helping me a lot.
Thank you Zoe for sharing your experience regarding this , it seams little for some people but I always ask my self if my age could affect me to peruse my dream. A mother of two and switching my job. Thank you Love you 😘
Please like this video if you enjoy these industry Q & A real talk videos!

Yes, one can learn so much from their peers when they really start paying attention. Good luck!
Yes 🙌🏾 I’m 41 I’m routing for you
Im 37 now, i always wanted to switch my career to fashion designing from my engineering graduation, but didnt happen🥺...and now its been a year im doing a certification in FD, wish to have a nice start when the pandemic subsides...
Ugh this video is life thank you
YASSS! I’m
Going back after having babies at the age of 39 !
Good luck!
Do it Greg! Prove her wrong!
Good luck!
I'm here to support you! If Coco Chanel could, so do you! 😄
Same here! Good luck 👍 🙌💪
I'm glad to know that at 36 I'm not to old to start a fashion career. Love your videos Zoe. Please keep them coming.
Don't worry I'm 42 and just started studying fashion!
I think it's never too late to start. It doesn't mean that there isn't a harder slog for any career if you're doing it later in life, just because old habits can be hard to break and there's definitely a real prejudice about older people in "younger" professions, but anything we want to do that's worthwhile will have some uphill battles.
xingcat thanks
You are amazing
I’ll be graduating in December for fashion design
This will be my second degree in America
Third degree in my life
I’m 38
You give me hope
Congratulations!
Go do all the things!
Can you do an update for us?
How things going?
I am a mother of 5. We just saw our youngest child graduate in July this year. I am now putting together my portfolio and application to IFA Paris. You are helping me so much! I am ... 61!! I am obsessed and don't give a flingin flangin fluck about whether I will be the 'oldest' student in the class. Thank-you for your inspiration, your expertise, and the time you put into your videos. I am learning so much!
YESSSSSSS good luck with everything!
@@zoehongteaches Thank-you!
Good luck to you too! And thank you!
I'm 49, my kids are grown and I've decided to get back into art... I'm gonna learn to make paper dolls through you!
That is a great quote! Thank you!
Thank you for this video. I have just applied to Fashion school. I’m 39 and needed a change.
Good luck!
The age gap thing in fashion school is so real. I have one fellow student who's a mom with 5 kids, the oldest being 15
Zoe, I'm really grateful for this.
Stumbled upon this video 5 years later and the encouragement is as relevant and fresh as the first day it was posted. Your words spoke life!! Ty❤
Of course! I went to Seattle Central's Apparel Design Program in Seattle, Wa. Website: schoolofappareldesignanddevelopment.com/
@@gglaurengg Yay! I've been a pattern maker for nearly 40 years. IMPO, 2 year technical programs are the best. SCC is good as is LA Trade Tech. Contrary to what most people think, those two schools have more credibility than FIT.
This encourage me alot because I'm almost 30 and I use to have this question in the back of my head. I feel indestructible now lol!!
Good luck!
I'm 48 and I started a fashion course last year (Burgo fashion institute in Milan-Italy). I work for an english brand which sells kids clothes and in particular I make handsmocked dresses for little girls. Maybe it's too late at this point to learn, but I want to give it a try 😊✂️
(Anyway...I started running marathons at 40 ...so maybe it's not too late 😄)
I went back to school for fashion design last year at the age of 35 and it was the best thing I've done for myself.
Thanks for your video. I've study fashion but never sat myself down to sew My Designs till now at my 40"s.
i'm nineteen coming on twenty and i'm rushing through my ba because i've been out of school a full year and i'm worried i'm falling behind in life but this is reassuring
You're like the opposite of behind.
I'm so glad that I found your channel. It answers all my questions while giving me confidence and assurance that I can do it. Thank you so much Zoe❤
You are so full of positivity!!
I adore you because i ask myself this question everyday 🙏🙏🙏 thanks very much
OMG my story is totally like that.
You're welcome! Good luck!
Does she have a superior who you can go to to complain? It sounds awful
0433elva Thank you for your kind words. actually I felt like giving everything up for a while. but I want to do good and be somebody.
30 isn't old I am in college and half the class is 30 year olds are older. You'll be fine
27?! Girl. You realize how young you are. you’ll be fine. They never ask how old you are at interviews
THANK YOU😘
Congratulations!!! Good luck at AMFI!
Zoe, Thank for this video, I was so worried about this! thanks for your channel...
In nursing school, I had a classmate that was 65. One of the patients told him he needed to be in the bed next to him during one of our clinicals.
I'm 23 years old and I'm going to start anew career in fashion desing. I wait for this.
so uplifting!! i'm 38. and already started hard 😁 fashion course first on schedule then fashion school. practicing every day with your channel. thank you Zoe!!! and i love your sense of humour 😁😁😁
Definitely older people treat their school project differently too those in their 18s. They take everything so serious and willing to spend a lot of money and effort and they also stress out more in my point of view. Lol Its a competitive industry and the older they are the more stressed they are. This is what happenend in my school.
Yeah, some people are not ready for college right out of high school and that's ok too.
Thank you!
This is so amazing!!! You are really inspiring people. I’m 40 ... listening to this I definitely feel positive and motivates me to achieve my dreams. Big Thank you to you!!
Honestly if you are older it’s a BLESSING you are still alive to even decide to pursue your dreams!

preetha nath I know what you mean!
I love ur jokes they are educational iv been in and out of the industry ...but now i here to stay
I’m 26 and I really want to study Fashion Design, Iove it. I think I’ll do it after I graduate from College. Thank you for this vid
You can be a numbers person who went into fashion with a good head for business that I was talking about! Good luck whichever direction you go!
On a day like today
I NEEDED THIS WHOLE ENTIRE VIDEO.
I really want to start (33 will be 34 in October)
But I wasn’t sure if I should because of that...
Thank you
I really enjoy watching your videos and your content...
Stay blessed Zoe
Good luck with your career!
Thanks for making this video. It really boosted up my confidence. keep up the good work.
you're welcome!
I'm 62 and still learning. Can't wait for retirement so I can do this all the time.
For those who feel too old, well Colonel Sanders created KFC when he was in his 60's
WOW really? That's awesome!
Truth❤️❤️❤️🙌🏼
And really did think or believed that maybe I'm starting to late.
you have no idea how hopeful this video is for me, thank you very much Zoe
I've read most fashion designers don't start until they're 40
Zoe Hong thank you! Yep meeting the love of your life can really make your life twist and turn in unimagined ways 🤣
Watch Me Design will continue. :) Hooray! Thanks, Zoe.
Thanks a lot for this ! This problem always stuck in my mind all the time. Btw , hope you get well soon 💜
Thank you!
Thank you. I was really needing this.
Hi zoe.its Cherry from Australia.just started my fashion design course
Thank you for the video. I moved to the US a year ago. Im 27. I do hav associates in Design but wanted to go to college and complete my bachelors. I felt im too late to start here from an entry level job.
Go do all the things! You can do it!
Just came across your channel. Love this video and the humor!
I’m almost 25 and since I have no background in sewing WHATSOEVER, I guess it feels like I won’t be successful since I haven’t grown up doing this.
Great video. Always interesting!
Really pleased to have stumbled across your videos they are extremely helpful and informative.
They say the average person shifts careers 7 times in the life. Good luck with everything!
Thank you so much for this motivation
Lol Im just starting ar 29!

This video motivate me. Thank you so much. I though 25 is too old for start a new career.
Thank you Zoe for sharing your experience regarding this , it seams little for some people but I always ask my self if my age could affect me to peruse my dream. A mother of two and switching my job. Thank you Love you 😘
Thank you Zoe! This is so helpful.
