I'm quite surprised the lightsaber didn't just blow up when Osha ignited it. We've seen in The Clone Wars (The episodes where Ashoka accompany the younglings to get their crystals) that a crystal placed upside-down in the lightsaber can provoke an explosion when you try to ignite it. So a crystal being halfway out of the lightsaber...

I had always understood that a lightsaber’s blade color was determined solely by the color of the focusing crystal and not through any special connection with its wielder. Lightsabers in the prequel era were either blue or green because by that point Illum was the only remaining source of crystals and Illum only produced blue and green crystals. The other colors occasionally seen (yellow, purple) were those colors because they were using ancient crystals from long forgotten or otherwise expended sources. Red sabers were, as you say, synthetic.

Up until Acolyte. My assumption was that bleeding the crystal was a difficult process that required a lot of focus (that's how it appears in the Vader comics). So just being immersed in the darkside wasn't enough, you had to consciously bleed the crystal. However, now that idea has gone out of the window. Apparently, you can bleed a kyber crystal without even knowing it. I've got to do some mental gymnastics to make this fit in my head canon.

I think the reason they went with color-changing lightsaber is because it was a safer way of making her "switch sides" rather than showing her turning evil with the yellow/red eyes, like Anakin in Revenge of the Sith, especially since the Jedi were presented as being all sorts of corrupt in the Acolyte.
I actually like the concept of Sith bleeding the crystal red but not in the way the Acolyte presented it. It would be a focused ritual, hours of channeling their hatred and rage into the crystal until it becomes corrupt, something that would take focus and commitment to the dark side to pull off. It would not be something that merely happens as one embraces the dark side but only after one becomes entangled and corrupted by it (the Sith eyes as one sign of it). It would be a rite of passage, their absolute embrace of the dark side, something that a Jedi still connected to the light side would not be able to succeed in. Thus the sight of a red lightsaber would not merely indicate a dark side user but one committed to the dark side of the Force.

Yet another element of canon further broken by Disney. I don't fully get that. That's literally the explanation from George Lucas himself, including the moment when Sam Jackson got his purple lightsaber where George was explaining to him what Blue/Green and Red were. Blue/Green were good, Red was bad. That's how it's always been in Star Wars. There were good guys and there were the bad guys. It always been this simple, 1 dimensional, yin and yang type thing since the literal beginning. Disney made it even more simpler by turning lightsabers into mood rings now which is definitely truly terrible. But the original meaning wasn't all that far off anyways. • @mongodellango4732

I think this new reasoning was inspired by KOTOR 2. KOTOR 2 has ONE specific Crystal which is perfectly aligned with the player. Its properties were attuned perfectly to the player character and change based on alignment. If you kept making bad choices the player named Crystal would be restricted to dark side users. If you then turned to the light you’d have to talk to Kreia so she could realign the Crystal to attune to the players new condition. So it would go from a dark side restriction to light side. The thing about this was it had absolutely no impact on the colour of the blade. That was determined by what kyber Crystal was inserted into it. The idea of channeling properties into the crystals is very similar to how Disney Star Wars approach it.

I always had it that the colour represented the mindset and personality of the youngling as they went to find their crystal. Green was for more introspective people, those leaning more on thought and foresight rather than action... ie those that were called "Consulars". Often also very dedicated to communing with the Force.
Blue was for those more attuned to action rather than foresight, warriors and guardians. Whereas yellow was for those of an inquisitive bent, explorers, investigators, sentinels.
And the reason why Sith used synthetic crystals was pretty simple... they did not have access to a world where they could find natural ones for a long time. Which in turn led to a disregard for that whole tradition even at times when they could find them more readily. For a Sith basically any crystal will do.
I do sort of like the "bleeding" thing, but making it essentially a mood ring is just too much. And it should be a deliberate thing requiring alot of "negative" emotion and focus on the dark side.
//Disney Star Wars is basically mostly garbage. Force Awakens started good, and got worse as it rolled... rest of that trilogy was awful. Rogue One was good. Mando was mostly good. And the rest was pretty much average at best, mostly alot worse, aside from Andor.
But Disney has even managed to turn Marvel into a franchise that is mostly bleeding money. And Star Wars is pretty much dead.

From what I recall the lightsaber has 4 main components (not including the kyber). The hilt, the power cell, the crystal matrix & the focusing lens.
The lightsaber that was "bled" in the acoltye had a broken hilt ( so that physical contact could be made with the crystal). This would also mean that the crystal matrix is at the very least misaligned if not also broken. That alone should mean there should have been a violent energetic reaction as soon as the lightsaber was powered. Lastly the saber in the Acolyte totally lacks a focusing lens, That means that there is no way for the energy to be focused into a tight beam.

Kyber crystals weren't around until the cartoons needed a Harry Potter sorting hat for the kids. It was a ditched idea in early movie drafts and even then wasn't exclusive to lightsaber design. In the OG novels a Jedi improvised with certain types of natural, found crystals and even some synthetics to create their sabers, each unique to their inventiveness. All of that was ditched because most people don't read, lol.

On episode 8, at time 25:19 when Osha was about to pick up Sol’s damage lightsaber, the crystal was exposed and was still blue. At 28:39, Osha is now holding the lightsaber and the crystal is now blue and red.

I think you just have to focus your anger specifically on the crystal. Dagan Gera used the force to bleed it, his hands weren't touching it. Osha seemed to be surprised when it was red, which doesn't make sense at all according to their previous lore, bleeding it is always something that is intentional.

I like the new canon version but it is extremely stupid that you can accidentally bleed a crystal. Same with force lightning, it does not happen by accident but instead the user must focus on the goal, the outcome. How will their hatred destroy everything around them for their own self gain. It gives you focus, which you must channel into the crystal to bend it to your will. I makes more sense that way in that Anakin didn’t know how to bleed a crystal and that he would’ve had to have done it on purpose.

I liked how it was portrayed in Clone Wars TV show with younglings. Crystal color depends on person finding it and that's that. Also remember that in that arc with Vader bleeding his crystal, Palpatism sent him to kill Jedi Master without a weapon. Sounds familiar? And while I found idea neat, to Sith acquire their weapon by defeating an enemy, it doesn't make sense when they were hiding for millennia. Were they killing random Jedi to acquire crystals and no one got suspicious? Also if we assume Old Republic to be canon, that's a lot of red lightsabers, must have killed ton of Jedi before they started the war.

My own personal head cannon around Anakin was that he didn't fully "hate" to bleed into his crystal until after Mustafar, every thing before that he was blindly doing to save Padme really. And not until after his duel with ObiWan and Padme dying was he full of rage.

IF we want to benefit of the doubt, my thought would be, because Anakin seemed to show remorse.
He did what he did to save Padme, so he wasn’t quite filled with hate and rage.
