I think wilf is my single favourite character in the show. His refusal to back down to the military was brilliant, and with that line he knows what he was fighting for in WW2. The generation after him seems to have lost that understanding, if the ones I know are anything to go by. It wasn't a war against Germany, it was a war against the most incredible evil. And if that understanding is lost and modern British people see Germans as the villain of world war two rather than Nazis, right wing populism and hatred, then it will happen again. That was an odd ramble as to why I love wilf.
That scene with the family being taken away is one of the most heartbreaking scenes in Who (and that's setting a high bar with this show). It's the cheerfulness of the dad trying to keep everyones' spirits up just a little longer even though he knows what's coming. I'm getting myself choked up just writing that...
@@johnstorm9314 At the time the episode was aired, it seemed like something that could happen after the disasters in the story. Now it seems like something that could happen, period.
But wait...that Donna DIDN'T have the "Turn Right" parasite... so were they seeing her future, or seeing her alternate self...or did "our Donna" ALSO have something on her back??
There's a reason I love Donna so much. She's basically me, only louder and with a British accent. I've loved most of the Doctor's companions, but she's the one I relate to the most. And let me tell you, this episode is always a punch in the feels.
A Doctor Who Elseworlds story, and it's pretty damn good. It shows precisely why the world needs the Doctor but also why the Doctor needs the world, in the form of his human companions because there are countless disasters he would have walked himself into by now. This theme will be deplored later on in the Specials but this does a great job of showing what the consequences of the world would be without these necessary partnerships, and how important Donna is. And the best part is that it's only part one of three!
What US viewers probably don't appreciate - the newscasters that intermittently appear are actual BBC newsreaders doing cameos (just the cherry on an amazing episode).
"It's too real. The world is sh*t." I hear you, Paula. I hear you. This is one of my favourite episodes of Who ever. Tennant's slow dawning realisation that Donna's talking about Rose gives me chills, and the Italian guy trying to keep everyone's spirit up as he's sent away to a labor camp just absolutely shatters my heart every time. The whole thing is a masterpiece.
The actor who plays the fellow refugee in Leeds with his family, and then carted off to a labour camp - his performance was so special - the scene with him and Wilf at the end - God they really sold that, both of them. Great reaction as always - very entertaining.
Fun fact, the was a sort of connection episode to The Sarah Jane Adventures. The woman who put the beetle on Donna’s back is a follower of The Trickster, an alien who appears in that show
I love how this episode is all about how the tiniest actions can have massive ripple effects, the butterfly effect. It really goes to show just how important the Doctor really is and how horrible a world- no a universe it would be without him. It also emphasises yet again how important it is for the Doctor to not be alone. It's quite shocking to realise that after losing Rose, the Doctor was willing to let himself die while drowning the Racnoss. The Doctor needs someone and Donna was there at the right place and at the right time. His companions keep him balanced, but at the same time he opens their eyes to new horizons, improves their lives and helps them grow as a person in so many ways. Just look at where Rose is now compared to where she was when we met her at the start of series one! He's done the same thing for Donna, remember her in "The Runaway Bride". Donna needs the Doctor just as much as he needs her because he's given her a purpose. Without that Donna still wouldn't see herself as anything special. She'd be left behind and always end up feeling like "just a temp". You come to realise in this episode that all the attitude and back talk is just a cover up and a way for her to hide her insecurities. Tthe feeling that she's let everyone in her life down, especially her mother. Which brings me to the great development Donna's family gets in this episode. You really get to know the Nobles in this episode, they feel like a proper family and you connect to them all. Especially Wilf who's just outstanding in this episode. He gets one of the most powerful moments in this episode, when the Italian (I think) family is being taken away... "it's happening again".... The character work in this episode is just masterful. The cliffhanger leading into the finale is also absolutely brilliant, Tennant isn't in this episode much but he certainly makes his mark at the end! II can't wait for the finale!!

The thing that makes this episode so strong is that it proves how good of a character Donna is, regardless of the Doctor. I very much doubt that the Rose we saw in episode one would have been willing to sacrifice herself in this way but regardless of the Doctor’s influence, Donna was always a person willing to do the right thing with more to her than just a temp or a shouty accent.
Wasn’t Rose also the one willing to save the Doctors life knowing full well she could die in season 1? Also fixed the lever in Doomsday knowing she would be pulled in. Don’t bash another companion to make another one seem good. It’s kinda catty.
Rose in episode 1 swung herself across the room to knock the anti plastic on to the nestene consciousness. She could've fallen in herself. So from the very first episode Rose had it in her to do the right thing, even if it meant sacrificing her own life.

So emotional this episode stuck in my head asking what if some of my decisions could be swapped around where would I be today mind-blowing. One decision I'm glad subscribing to gallifrey girls
This and the next few episodes are some of the best in the entire franchise's history. I won't spoil why but this episode alone is epic. The dark side of the Whoniverse is something which has come up quite a few times, including in Torchwood. Speaking of which, I loved the little Torchwood theme when Rose talks about them. I also loved the mention of Sarah Jane Smith and her team from their own spin-off show.
It really makes you think: How would things have been different if the Doctor kept pictures of previous companions around? Then later companions would know when they met them. ;)
I found you folks mostly by accident and you have proven to be one of my favorite Who reactors, hands down. Keep up the brilliant work. Your videos really do make my day better.
I fucking love Rose in this episode she's very doctor like in this. I love billie piper. Also can we talk about the fact if Donna hadn't been there to stop the doctor he would have just died and that was the same time he lost rose :( Makes it so much sadder. also Donna and Rose's chemistry is amazing. I always comment on Tennant's acting in the scene when he hears bad wolf. You can see about 1000 different emotions in one face it's fucking amazing.
This is another reason why series 4 is my favourite series. The last four episodes are some of the strongest episodes of Who. Russel was always subtle with the foreshadowing. Like Bad Wolf, Torchwood, Vote Saxon and Rose. But what makes series 4 special is the small easy to miss stuff like "Theres something on your back" in Fires of Pompeii. Can't mention more because spoilers but Rose is the big clue that things are really bad. I can't wait for the last two episodes it's going to be one hell of a ride.
A Doctor lite episode, with my favourite, and least favourite, modern companions...recipe for disaster? No, it is amazing, just magnificent. Rose and Donna are incredible, and so good together! And bonus Chan Tho too 😀 Also, this episode retrospectively makes one of my least favourite episodes, Runaway Bride, actually quite good. Almost. Well, if not good, at least important.
Ok so I finally caught one of these on upload again after ages of personal stuff getting in the way. Firstly, great reaction guys, love it, as always, thoughtful conversations all round. On the episode itself, love it. SPOILERS(ish) I don't consider it a part of the finale even though it flows in directly, purely cos it doesn't have to do with those villains specifically (at least not directly).
Maybe it's the fact that this episode received one of Doctor Who's highest Appreciation Scores Maybe it's all those references to previous episodes (1x12 Bad Wolf, 3x00 Runaway Bride, 3x01 Smith and Jones, 4x00 Voyage of the Damned, 4x01 Partners in Crime, 4x02 Fires of Pompeii, 4x04 The Sontaran Strategem), that reward the long term fans Maybe it's the reminder of how easy it is for anyone of us from losing our livelihoods Maybe it's the reminder that no matter how rich we are, we are all only a couple of bad decisions away from destitution Maybe it's the return of everyone's favourite companion Maybe it's the references to all the spinoffs (the Torchwood jingle, the Trickster's Brigade) Maybe it's the reminder of how authoritarian oppression can flourish (and wane) in the wake of national disasters Maybe it's the chilling return of the concentration camps of history (Auschwitz, Isle of Man, today's ICE prisons) Maybe it's because of the best acting performances by Catherine Tate & Bernard Cribbins Maybe it's the ease with which this episode triggers all the closet racist a-holes of the alt right Maybe it's the episode's Hugo Nomination but this may be my favourite episode of the revival. PS. if you get time to return to this episode, watching the "Next Time" trailer is totally worth it. It's one of the best of the entire show.
I remember a sci-fi kids show I watched like 20 years ago... "Halfway across the galaxy and turn left." I wonder if this was a little reference. Wikipedia says its about (alien) children geting to much responsibility and finding their place in the world. Not sure about that reference.

Donna's Mother always riled me, how could you be so dismissive of your own child?
Yeah. Without looking it up, I'm pretty sure it's the Chan-tho actor too.
Mind blown from the last few episodes? Well, hold on to your butts, it’s time to Turn Left.
Paula, I warned you about this! Should have brought some tissues. The only thing I can say about the next two episodes is...
EPIC!!!
U guys emotional reactions are too much!(in a good way obv) love your who reactions! Showing paula sum iconic classic who eps wud b simply amazin!!
Katrina looks away from the more intense scenes. She's a Whovian through and through.
This is where it gets complicated
A Doctor lite episode, with my favourite, and least favourite, modern companions...recipe for disaster? No, it is amazing, just magnificent. Rose and Donna are incredible, and so good together! And bonus Chan Tho too 😀
Also, this episode retrospectively makes one of my least favourite episodes, Runaway Bride, actually quite good. Almost. Well, if not good, at least important.
Ok so I finally caught one of these on upload again after ages of personal stuff getting in the way.
Firstly, great reaction guys, love it, as always, thoughtful conversations all round.
On the episode itself, love it.
SPOILERS(ish)
I don't consider it a part of the finale even though it flows in directly, purely cos it doesn't have to do with those villains specifically (at least not directly).
Maybe it's the fact that this episode received one of Doctor Who's highest Appreciation Scores
Maybe it's all those references to previous episodes (1x12 Bad Wolf, 3x00 Runaway Bride, 3x01 Smith and Jones, 4x00 Voyage of the Damned, 4x01 Partners in Crime, 4x02 Fires of Pompeii, 4x04 The Sontaran Strategem), that reward the long term fans
Maybe it's the reminder of how easy it is for anyone of us from losing our livelihoods
Maybe it's the reminder that no matter how rich we are, we are all only a couple of bad decisions away from destitution
Maybe it's the return of everyone's favourite companion
Maybe it's the
references to all the spinoffs (the Torchwood jingle, the Trickster's Brigade)
Maybe it's the reminder of how authoritarian oppression can flourish (and wane) in the wake of national disasters
Maybe it's the chilling return of the concentration camps of history (Auschwitz, Isle of Man, today's ICE prisons)
Maybe it's because of the best acting performances by Catherine Tate & Bernard Cribbins
Maybe it's the ease with which this episode triggers all the closet racist a-holes of the alt right
Maybe it's the episode's Hugo Nomination
but this may be my favourite episode of the revival.
PS. if you get time to return to this episode, watching the "Next Time" trailer is totally worth it.
This is my favorite episode... at least of the Davies/Tennant era. I love stories about what would have happened if something had changed.
I think it's one my favourite New Who episodes, full stop.
Also great work yet again gals
Ps love this episode
Can we please get these videos more often
Katrina. I don't know how to tell you girls this, BUT. I saw a shadow moving behind you. Could it have been the Vashta Nerada. Do either of you have two shadows? Paula. Whit, I'm Scottish, you said, 'The World is sh...', Sh... what?
This story, the last before the finale, leaves you an emotional wreck. This is on purpose. It is structured like so to make the thrills of the season finale (going from the lowest of lows, to the thrillingest of thrills) that much more rollercoaster-y.
Buckle up.
I have never seen these two so quiet!
😬😫
Will Katrina ever be able to look at Wilf without getting emotional? :D
NO 😭
The fortune teller played chan tho in utopia
this is by far my favourite episode of doctor who, specials excluded
The best is still yet to come but keep some Kleenex handy, especially you Paula. ❤
People get proper into Doctor Who they don’t even get changed 😉 lol
Love you two, but please figure out your camera focus issues. Perhaps more light to cause the camera to iris down to a higher f-stop. Or if you can, use manual focus and set and forget.
Technical issues happen, auto focus can be a b*tch 🤷🏻♀️
@@KatAlysha Indeed! And if you are doing these on binge, you probably had a bunch recorded before you realized. You both have such expressive faces -- it's a shame when they are less so due to blur.
I swear that I thought that Paula got so broken that they got to blur the image. Glad that it was only the camera... And it`s true, Katrina and Paula say so much with their faces!
One thing Ive never understood is why that fortune teller at the beginning did what she did. why was she malicious and why did she want the world to change for the worse? nothing was said of it and there was no indication she was working for someone
She probably didn't know it'd be for the worst.
So Chantho turned evil? Too much time with the Master...
Everyone in this episode acted their asses off, especially Catherine Tate.
Those faces on that screenshot...yikes
I was kinda expecting a reaction to all the stars going out, but whatever.
:''(
u are one of teh last shows on this channel i can watch :) the tv's in the background destroying all other shows i hope u never do this :)
