One of my faves is "What makes you think I would ever give YOU back?" Perfectly delivered, deep line with just a subtle hint of possessive menace. (almost suggesting the Doctor might be a prisoner on the TARDIS.) But totally agree. Definitely some of the best lines in the entire series.

Yeah Moffat might make thing overcomplicate at times (sometimes not aways for the best) but he has been great at fixing plot issue that have shown up over last 50+ years.

Perhaps you should give 'Good Omens' starring Michael Sheen and David Tennant a watch and react. That is also written (both the book and screenplay) by Neil Gaiman who wrote this episode! It is a comedy, only five episodes and follows an Angel and a Demon trying to stop the apocalypse!
One thing I love about this episode (in addition to everything else so far mentioned) is that it gives an extra resonance (for me at least) to a line from all the way back at the end of Series One: in "the Parting of the Ways" Rose has absorbed the energy of the Time Vortex, and as the Doctor protests, she says, "I want you safe. My Doctor." This episode implies that the TARDIS has always thought of the Doctor thus, and so it is as much the TARDIS speaking as it is Rose... *cries*
The TARDIS actress (Suranne Jones) is such a national treasure here in the UK. She also played Gentleman Jack aka Anne Lister and she's incredible at any role. She really knows how to play a character, and my advice to you ladies would be to look up and watch a couple more of her roles because she's a powerhouse.

Reminded me of the World tour arc of Gargoyles. When they go to leave the magic island of Avalon only to learn it sends one where one needs to be rather than where one wants to go.
During the classic years "The Doctor's Wife" was a planted title used by the producer of the time to smoke out someone who was leaking information. The working title for Matt Smith's story was "House of Nothing" which I think I prefer.
Two fun facts: 1) the "Pull to open" is on the notification to the public that they can contact the local police station by opening the small door and using the telephone that is behind that door. It does not refer to the entry doors of the police box or, in this case, the TARDIS. Which is fine, it just goes to show that, like all living things, the TARDIS is fallible OR willing to fudge a bit to win an argument. Fans can debate the motivation. 😉 2) If you have closed captioning on or crank up the volume, you will hear that her last line as she fades away is "I love you."
Or that Sexy had never used a police box before and just stuck a door in wherever it was convenient? There was no standard design for those things, apparently. I've seen them in stuff here and there and never seen two that looked alike.

The way she tells it gives me the impression that their stop at Foreman's Junkyard on Totters Lane was the first time in the Police Box form.
That’s always been the assumption. I think the Doctor has a couple lines about the TARDIS’ appearance not changing after they land in the second episode. They’re in the book, anyway. Easy enough to fill in some imaginary details about how maybe they had trouble with it before but it only really got stuck after leaving 1963 London that one time. Easy enough to work in the stuff that happened last season too. 😊

Trivia: This story was originally supposed to be part of season 5, but got pushed back. Originally, Rory wasn't in it, so Neil Gaiman re-wrote it to include him. Good move, as it led to the horrifying scene in the corridor. Gaiman asked them to save the previous Tardis set so he could include it in this story. I wonder if this didn't lead to Michael Sheen's casting in Good Omens (also by Neil Gaiman)? Certain elements of this reminded me of the 'Pond Life' mini-episodes. Any plans of watching those? Probably not enough material for a reaction video, and not really essential viewing, but they're entertaining.
Neil was initially mildly annoyed by the rescheduling, while knowing that's how it goes sometimes, but later came to terms with it when he was able to give Amy that line about "Time Lord" just being what he's called, it doesn't mean he knows what he's doing.

This one was written by Neil Gaiman, that's really notable for some folks so I'm surprised if it doesn't come up. :) It felt like the dialogue and how good the Tardis-Doctor story elements were really reflected his touch.
I agree Katrina. I really love season 6, Peter's probably my favorite Doctor, but a lot of the way the story develops in season 6 works really well for me.
One of the highlights of the hit-and-miss Moffat-era. It was great seeing the coral TARDIS interior again, and Surranne Jones was brilliant as the Idris. She and Matt Smith played off each other brilliantly. Bit of trivia, the TARDIS that the Doctor and Idris improvised was designed by a fan for a Blue Peter competition. Not a bad job!
This is one of my absolute favourite episodes. Not that I don't like David Tennant, but he did have quite a few crying scenes. Matt Smiths Doctor, not so much. So when he breaks down at the end of this just that little bit it always hits me so hard. Such a good performance, such a nice insight to his loneliness, and just a nice stand alome episode you can watch on its own
Lesley Sharp (the women in Midnight who repeated everything the Doctor said) and Suranne Jones both starred in a UK police drama called "Scott and Bailey" that is really good. Suranne and another actress in the show (Sally Lindsay) came up with the idea between them.
I'm a bit disappointed that they didn't make more of the bittersweet moment where the Tardis takes her last moments of being able to converse directly with the Doctor just to finally say, with genuine heartfelt relief "It's so very good to meet you." - she had obviously been wanting to exchange that simple pleasantry for ages and ages...through so many iterations of the doctor's lives...
As mentioned, this was written by Neil Gaiman. But the funner fact is he wrote it with the Tenth Doctor in mind, initially. Which means we could have gotten David Tennant & Michael Sheen (sort of - he's the voice of House) in the same episode years before Good Omens came about if it had gone to the original plan.
Laura Martin-Falla I remember at the time though myself wondering about the mentioning of the forest with rivers first episode being the 2 parter with the title of the second episode being forest of the dead I believe? Anyway that’s how I remembered it way back then I might have my facts all muddled now but that’s what I linked it to straight away on the original broadcast for my personal theory
My favorite throwback in this was the little white box at the beginning. The second Doctor puts together one of those to send a message to the Time Lords in his last story back in '68-69-ish.
I have been waiting for this one since the announcement of season 6. It is definitely one of my faves and the ending with the Tardis saying goodbye/hello breaks my heart.

This episode was originally episode 8 of this series hence no Eye Patch Lady they changed for the original episode 4 Night Terrors Originally all the past console rooms was to feature with a different threat for Amy and Rory to face in each but they couldnt afford to create past monsters and sets so they used an Ood and Eccleston/Tennant TARDIS room This was written for episode 7 or 11 of series 5
16:00: I know, Katrina. With that scene, and the way Idris/The TARDIS says the line, the tears come. And no matter how many times that scene is watched, it still happens! These things run deep.
The title episode is a fun reference too. Back in the 80s someone was leaking details to fans so the showrunner at the time held a molehunt by putting the fake story title "The Doctor's Wife" on the story breaking board where only a couple of people would see it. Knowing it would be too good a tease not to leak and he'd have his confirmation who the leaker was.
Another notable fact about this episode is that it was written by Neil Gaiman - the storyteller behind The Sandman, American Gods, and Good Omens. It felt very much like an episode of Good Omens or Sandman. Same kind of storybook feel with a dark and sinister twist. Also, he loves a good narration.
Is Paula aware that The Doctor is a grandfather? Also the third serial ever, "Edge of Disaster" is a story about the Doctor thinking someone is sabotaging the TARDIS, but it was the TARDIS all along, letting him know he set the controls wrong, it's also displayed levels of sentience in other episodes throughout the years. The graveyard TARDIS console is a fan design from a kids contest, and it's pretty much spot on to her winning drawing. The 9/10th Doctors console room was disused because of the jump to HD Cameras, and they felt it didn't look good, so it was moved to the "Doctor Who Experience", left completely intact, so it was easy to shoot there again as it was never destroyed. They shot it in low light to preserve the idea of it and not show how poor it looks in HD.
I love your show. About 8 years ago, Arthur Danville, Matt Smith and Moffatt all came to The Way Station bar in Brooklyn. Your show is a nice trip back through memory lane to those days when I was watching these episodes at that bar. Keep it going!!
Great episode, actress who played the TARDIS did a brilliant job, love seeing the old control room again. Katrina looks very ghostly in this one with the lighting. ;)
Little details: Gaiman has said that Troughton (Doctor #2) was his favorite doctor, and there are touches of Troughton's Tardis console in the makeshift Tardis given life by Idris. Secondly, despite 11's "bad bad girl" comments, he tends to be something of a prude. It doesn't look particularly important in the moment, which is why I guess you don't include those scenes (like the bunk bed one in this episode), but this attitude of his will be a very an important plot point later.
One other bit of trivia is that the junk yard Tardis orb when in flight is a nod to a proposed idea that the Tardis would be more like a bubble but was changed to a police box.
Great reaction, this is one of my favorite episodes ever, Suranne Jones was absolute perfection as the TARDIS and at the end when she is saying she is alive and hello and The Doctor cries gets me every time, and the chills I get when the Doctor says “Fear Me I’ve killed them all”
The thing we see in this episode is that it really *was* The TARDIS's choice to take the Doctor, rather than his choice to take her. We see that the TARDIS is able to fly herself - as Idris does, starting the other TARDIS on her own - which means she *could* have left that repair bay on Gallifrey whenever the hell she wanted too. She just didn't want to leave *alone*, so unlocked her door and waited for the Doctor to come along and then seized her chance and never looked back.
Suranne Jones plays The TARDIS/Idris. You should check her out in ‘Gentleman Jack’ which is based on a real person, she’s equally sensational in that. O’Hooley and Tidow’s closing/over credits song is a real ear worm too!
And oh yes, surprised that no mention was made (at least not here) that, like the Enterprise, the TARDIS has shields! (But no deflector that I can see. A scullery though apparently).
As I said on patreon: I've been waiting for this one. This episode finally locked in Matt Smith as the Doctor for me. "Fear me, I've killed hundreds of time lords", "Fear me, I've killed all of them".

This has always been a massive fan-favourite and a massive tearjerker. I love getting to see more of the inside of the TARDIS, as well as the previous control room. Plus, we get an Ood thrown in for good measure. I definitely agree that it's like a horror movie when House is messing with Amy and Rory. I also loved that bit where House goes, "Fear me! I've killed hundreds of Timelords." and the Doctor says, "Fear ME! I've killed all of them!" That was such a badass line!

The looks from Katrina when Paula is putting out some guesses or reactions are my favorite parts of the Doctor Who videos they have been doing . Like Katrina is looking at me (a person who has also seen the NewWhovian stuff a few times through) saying: "You hear what she said, see how she reacted? We know what's coming." "...went into her, she's the Tardis now?!"
Suranne Jones, who played Idris/Human TARDIS in this episode, is one of our most well-loved actresses in the UK. She's brilliant and has had an extensive acting career so far, including Doctor Foster and Gentleman Jack. Her first major role was as Karen Phillips (later McDonald) in Coronation Street, which is our longest-running TV soap opera in the UK. She was in Coronation Street from about 2000/2001 to 2004. Karen was mental as a character, so playing a human carnation of the TARDIS would have been second nature for Suranne. :')
The whole telepathic timelord message in a cube was only once used in classic who in 1969, the second doctor reluctantly asks for help from the timelords so he sends one to them
This episode is one of my favourite episodes of New Who, and it's up there with Vincent and the Doctor as one the best stories from Matt Smith's era. Neil Gaiman's script is fantastic, striking the right balance between the various emotional beats of the episode, delivering some wonderful lines (I stand by "did you wish really hard?" being one of the funniest lines in the show), and even managing to sneak in some neat little Easter eggs for Classic Who fans, right down to actually bringing back the psychic messaging cubes from the Troughton era story "The War Games" (plus, we get the canonical confirmation that Time Lords can change gender). The subplot of Amy and Rory on the House-possessed TARDIS is a brilliantly tense sequence that provides us with some delightfully grim and horrifying visuals that you would expect from a Gaiman script, providing the perfect balance for the hilarious banter exchanged between The Doctor and the TARDIS. Matt Smith and Suranne Jones show excellent chemistry and give fantastic performances, with Jones in particular doing an excellent job at showing the TARDIS's non-linear understanding of the universe and time. The episode also features some wonderful lines that completely recontextualise many of the scenes between the two in the past ("I always took you where you NEEDED to go"), and further reemphasise the strength of the relationship between the last of the Time Lords and his time machine. The final moments where the Doctor realises that while they can no longer talk to each other, she is always with him and can always hear him, is a delightfully poignant ending, and the perfect conclusion to this emotional, fun, frightening and downright wonderful episode
There was a scene in Gallifrey where Brax mentions that an academy tutor was planning on regenerating soon, and that he was going to tell her students that next time they saw her, she would be a he, but this is the first time in the show itself.
Hello ladies, just found your vlog and am binge watching it, and love the fact that two young Americans love what is quintessentially a British programme. Just for the record my first doctor was Patrick Troughton, and yes I am old. Not Time lord old....yet.!!!
Even this edited-down version got me in the feels. God damn but Neil Gaiman can write. I don't think there's a single thing he's written that I haven't thoroughly enjoyed. I absolutely cannot wait for the Sandman TV series (not to mention the second installment of the Audible Sandman audio play).
You're not toooo far away from the 50th Anniversary now - that strikes me as probably the best time to watch 'An Unearthly Child'. You should definitely watch it sometime, either way :-)

I used to buy any magazine that mentioned 'Doctor Who' since it wasn't covered to the degree that other shows are so I'd get the official Doctor Who magazine and almost always UK versions of magazines. This episode was a long time coming because Neil Gaiman had been talked about as wanting to write an episode for ever. I can't imagine what that process was like given how mythology heavy Steven Moffatt's series were. It's one thing to come up with an original idea but then it has to fit in with both the season and the overall story being told. To that end it was brilliant. I'm a huge fan of Neil Gaiman so this was always going to be a special episode for me and it delivered everything he's known for. They have talked about doing another one but who knows if that'll ever happen given he's busier than ever. I hope they can work something out.

Should note that The Doctor almost certainly had more than one wife. After all, the very first episodes of the original Dr. Who (the FIRST Doctor) travelled with his granddaughter.
There is a guy in my town who speaks EXACTLY like Alan Rickman. I sometimes follow him round the supermarket just to hear him talking with his family. Want to ask him if he ever thought of doing voice overs. To make matters worse, although he looks nothing like Alan, he does look like another actor who's name escapes me.
The climax of this episode, between where the TARDIS forcibly takes back her home and she has to give up her temporary flesh suit, I was openly weeping. Still am.
Sexiest dr who episode. Even if I say so myself. Epic moments in my life part 101... Matt wears my jacket, I get snogged by tardis lady in rehearsal, and I get to discuss the plot of this jewel of an episode with Niel Gaiman... I love the tardis. Can't you tell?

Lesley Sharp (the women in Midnight who repeated everything the Doctor said) and Suranne Jones both starred in a UK police drama called "Scott and Bailey" that is really good. Suranne and another actress in the show (Sally Lindsay) came up with the idea between them.
I'm a bit disappointed that they didn't make more of the bittersweet moment where the Tardis takes her last moments of being able to converse directly with the Doctor just to finally say, with genuine heartfelt relief "It's so very good to meet you." - she had obviously been wanting to exchange that simple pleasantry for ages and ages...through so many iterations of the doctor's lives...

As mentioned, this was written by Neil Gaiman. But the funner fact is he wrote it with the Tenth Doctor in mind, initially. Which means we could have gotten David Tennant & Michael Sheen (sort of - he's the voice of House) in the same episode years before Good Omens came about if it had gone to the original plan.

Laura Martin-Falla I remember at the time though myself wondering about the mentioning of the forest with rivers first episode being the 2 parter with the title of the second episode being forest of the dead I believe? Anyway that’s how I remembered it way back then I might have my facts all muddled now but that’s what I linked it to straight away on the original broadcast for my personal theory
My favorite throwback in this was the little white box at the beginning. The second Doctor puts together one of those to send a message to the Time Lords in his last story back in '68-69-ish.
I have been waiting for this one since the announcement of season 6. It is definitely one of my faves and the ending with the Tardis saying goodbye/hello breaks my heart.

Originally all the past console rooms was to feature with a different threat for Amy and Rory to face in each but they couldnt afford to create past monsters and sets so they used an Ood and Eccleston/Tennant TARDIS room

16:00: I know, Katrina. With that scene, and the way Idris/The TARDIS says the line, the tears come. And no matter how many times that scene is watched, it still happens! These things run deep.
The title episode is a fun reference too. Back in the 80s someone was leaking details to fans so the showrunner at the time held a molehunt by putting the fake story title "The Doctor's Wife" on the story breaking board where only a couple of people would see it. Knowing it would be too good a tease not to leak and he'd have his confirmation who the leaker was.
Another notable fact about this episode is that it was written by Neil Gaiman - the storyteller behind The Sandman, American Gods, and Good Omens. It felt very much like an episode of Good Omens or Sandman. Same kind of storybook feel with a dark and sinister twist. Also, he loves a good narration.

Is Paula aware that The Doctor is a grandfather? Also the third serial ever, "Edge of Disaster" is a story about the Doctor thinking someone is sabotaging the TARDIS, but it was the TARDIS all along, letting him know he set the controls wrong, it's also displayed levels of sentience in other episodes throughout the years.
The graveyard TARDIS console is a fan design from a kids contest, and it's pretty much spot on to her winning drawing.
The 9/10th Doctors console room was disused because of the jump to HD Cameras, and they felt it didn't look good, so it was moved to the "Doctor Who Experience", left completely intact, so it was easy to shoot there again as it was never destroyed. They shot it in low light to preserve the idea of it and not show how poor it looks in HD.
Should be, it comes up in The Doctor's Daughter at the very least.

Great episode, actress who played the TARDIS did a brilliant job, love seeing the old control room again. Katrina looks very ghostly in this one with the lighting. ;)
Little details: Gaiman has said that Troughton (Doctor #2) was his favorite doctor, and there are touches of Troughton's Tardis console in the makeshift Tardis given life by Idris. Secondly, despite 11's "bad bad girl" comments, he tends to be something of a prude. It doesn't look particularly important in the moment, which is why I guess you don't include those scenes (like the bunk bed one in this episode), but this attitude of his will be a very an important plot point later.
One other bit of trivia is that the junk yard Tardis orb when in flight is a nod to a proposed idea that the Tardis would be more like a bubble but was changed to a police box.
Great reaction, this is one of my favorite episodes ever, Suranne Jones was absolute perfection as the TARDIS and at the end when she is saying she is alive and hello and The Doctor cries gets me every time, and the chills I get when the Doctor says “Fear Me I’ve killed them all”

The thing we see in this episode is that it really *was* The TARDIS's choice to take the Doctor, rather than his choice to take her. We see that the TARDIS is able to fly herself - as Idris does, starting the other TARDIS on her own - which means she *could* have left that repair bay on Gallifrey whenever the hell she wanted too. She just didn't want to leave *alone*, so unlocked her door and waited for the Doctor to come along and then seized her chance and never looked back.

Suranne Jones plays The TARDIS/Idris. You should check her out in ‘Gentleman Jack’ which is based on a real person, she’s equally sensational in that. O’Hooley and Tidow’s closing/over credits song is a real ear worm too!
And oh yes, surprised that no mention was made (at least not here) that, like the Enterprise, the TARDIS has shields! (But no deflector that I can see. A scullery though apparently).

This has always been a massive fan-favourite and a massive tearjerker. I love getting to see more of the inside of the TARDIS, as well as the previous control room. Plus, we get an Ood thrown in for good measure. I definitely agree that it's like a horror movie when House is messing with Amy and Rory. I also loved that bit where House goes, "Fear me! I've killed hundreds of Timelords." and the Doctor says, "Fear ME! I've killed all of them!" That was such a badass line!

The looks from Katrina when Paula is putting out some guesses or reactions are my favorite parts of the Doctor Who videos they have been doing . Like Katrina is looking at me (a person who has also seen the NewWhovian stuff a few times through) saying: "You hear what she said, see how she reacted? We know what's coming."

Suranne Jones, who played Idris/Human TARDIS in this episode, is one of our most well-loved actresses in the UK. She's brilliant and has had an extensive acting career so far, including Doctor Foster and Gentleman Jack. Her first major role was as Karen Phillips (later McDonald) in Coronation Street, which is our longest-running TV soap opera in the UK. She was in Coronation Street from about 2000/2001 to 2004. Karen was mental as a character, so playing a human carnation of the TARDIS would have been second nature for Suranne. :')
Also think about Rose looking into the Tardis and how she spoke after. Idris is the queen of space and time.
This episode is definitely in my top 5 I love it so much. This is truly the last one that scared me I remember being terrified by old Rory.

Gaiman is a magnificent writer and Suranne Jones made it work so well.
This episode is one of my favourite episodes of New Who, and it's up there with Vincent and the Doctor as one the best stories from Matt Smith's era. Neil Gaiman's script is fantastic, striking the right balance between the various emotional beats of the episode, delivering some wonderful lines (I stand by "did you wish really hard?" being one of the funniest lines in the show), and even managing to sneak in some neat little Easter eggs for Classic Who fans, right down to actually bringing back the psychic messaging cubes from the Troughton era story "The War Games" (plus, we get the canonical confirmation that Time Lords can change gender). The subplot of Amy and Rory on the House-possessed TARDIS is a brilliantly tense sequence that provides us with some delightfully grim and horrifying visuals that you would expect from a Gaiman script, providing the perfect balance for the hilarious banter exchanged between The Doctor and the TARDIS. Matt Smith and Suranne Jones show excellent chemistry and give fantastic performances, with Jones in particular doing an excellent job at showing the TARDIS's non-linear understanding of the universe and time. The episode also features some wonderful lines that completely recontextualise many of the scenes between the two in the past ("I always took you where you NEEDED to go"), and further reemphasise the strength of the relationship between the last of the Time Lords and his time machine. The final moments where the Doctor realises that while they can no longer talk to each other, she is always with him and can always hear him, is a delightfully poignant ending, and the perfect conclusion to this emotional, fun, frightening and downright wonderful episode
There was a scene in Gallifrey where Brax mentions that an academy tutor was planning on regenerating soon, and that he was going to tell her students that next time they saw her, she would be a he, but this is the first time in the show itself.
Hello ladies, just found your vlog and am binge watching it, and love the fact that two young Americans love what is quintessentially a British programme. Just for the record my first doctor was Patrick Troughton, and yes I am old. Not Time lord old....yet.!!!

This is one of my favorite episodes. I have to say this is probably one of my favorite seasons, 5 and 6.
Even this edited-down version got me in the feels. God damn but Neil Gaiman can write. I don't think there's a single thing he's written that I haven't thoroughly enjoyed. I absolutely cannot wait for the Sandman TV series (not to mention the second installment of the Audible Sandman audio play).

You're not toooo far away from the 50th Anniversary now - that strikes me as probably the best time to watch 'An Unearthly Child'. You should definitely watch it sometime, either way :-)
So this is my favourite episode for many reasons but the main one is that this was penned by Neil Gaiman, probably the best writer of all time, who is a massive doctor who fan.

Love your reactions as always... also I agree with Katrina... S6 was amazing looking back... it was such a whirlwind at the time it was a bit jarring, but actually -- you really see Steven "The Moff" Moffat's craft as you rewatch it, how intricately he placed a lot of things, coordinated through clues, dialogue, foreshadowing, and even musical queues... in fact this is true of his whole era, give or take a few duds.

I used to buy any magazine that mentioned 'Doctor Who' since it wasn't covered to the degree that other shows are so I'd get the official Doctor Who magazine and almost always UK versions of magazines. This episode was a long time coming because Neil Gaiman had been talked about as wanting to write an episode for ever. I can't imagine what that process was like given how mythology heavy Steven Moffatt's series were. It's one thing to come up with an original idea but then it has to fit in with both the season and the overall story being told. To that end it was brilliant. I'm a huge fan of Neil Gaiman so this was always going to be a special episode for me and it delivered everything he's known for. They have talked about doing another one but who knows if that'll ever happen given he's busier than ever. I hope they can work something out.

Another thing... Matt Smith can play childish, goofy... But he can be pretty dark sometimes. IMO he is the darkest Doctor in NuWho so far...

Should note that The Doctor almost certainly had more than one wife. After all, the very first episodes of the original Dr. Who (the FIRST Doctor) travelled with his granddaughter.
There is a guy in my town who speaks EXACTLY like Alan Rickman. I sometimes follow him round the supermarket just to hear him talking with his family. Want to ask him if he ever thought of doing voice overs. To make matters worse, although he looks nothing like Alan, he does look like another actor who's name escapes me.
