Something to consider is that, prior to Princess Leia - and Ellen Ripley from "Alien" - women's roles in sci-fi movies mostly consisted of standing around in a tinfoil miniskirt and screaming while the chisel-jawed male lead fistfought with rubber bug-eyed aliens. Back in 1977, the beautiful princess to be rescued rolling her eyes at her lovable idiot rescuers, snatching the gun and leading the charge herself was *huge.* I cannot overstate what a moment that was in the history of pop culture. Now, generations later, a group of young men watching it are able to just nod and go "yeah, if she's involved with the Rebellion, it would make sense that she'd know how to fight." It's one of those moments that makes me hopeful that things really can change for the better.
I am a retired movie theater projectionist from the old days. My grandfather taught me how to run the projection equipment and I then got my union card. When you see how Kasden wrote Yoda explaining the force in Empire strikes back, then see phantom menace where Lucas had al creative control, and see him retcon everything in empire with Medichlorians, which totally kills everything that makes the force the force, shows you exactly who actually made star wars star wars and it was never lucas.

Watching this movie in the modern day, I have come to greatly appreciate how much the movie treats it's audience like they're smart. Characters are only introduced when they actually come into the story, which necessarily means that Luke, for all intents and purposes the main character, is only introduced 20 minutes in. We don't need any detailed backstories beyond what is related to the hear and now, but we get exactly what we need to know from the way the characters act. Note how there aren't any real exposition dumps beyond what would naturally occur in a conversation and the original scroll. I'm hard pressed to think of a lot of modern movies that can say the same There's a story about filming Vader's first scene and Mark Hamill (being the young relatively inexperienced actor) said to Lucas "Shouldn't we have two of rebels say "That's Vader, he's the evil x, y, and z that did this this and this?". Lucas just responded "This guy is dressed in all black walking through dead bodies while ominous music plays. If people don't pick up that he's the bad guy, we've failed at our job." To which Mark thought "Oh, he's brilliant"
Seeing ruff gradually go through every phase of starwars love was wholesome. The mind blown face with mark hammil had me laughin! Thanks guys! May the 4th be with you!
I know where the name R2-D2 came from. When George Lucas was working on American Graffiti, someone asked for R2, D2, (reel 2, dialog 2). George liked the sound of that so he noted it down and found the perfect character for it.
The music in Star Wars is what made me fall in love with the franchise. John Williams delivered a masterpiece every movie. (And if you decide to do the TV series.. Clone Wars, Rebels, etc.. Kevin Kiner also kills it with the soundtracks)
It's the fact that they won't sell the original cut that ticks people off. Add all the shitty CG you want but let people watch the original if they want to. The fact they've never done so is so damn arrogant. The CG stuff stick out like a sore thumb. And the reactors don't even realize it. CG wasn't even a thing when it came out!
1997, yes. The Jabba scene, in particular, was actually a deleted scene which wasn't in the original theatrical cut. It featured an actor standing in for Jabba, probably because Jabba's design wasn't fully conceptualized yet. The scene never made the original cut. However by 1997, with all 3 original movies released and Jabba having his final design already featured in Return of the Jedi, they went back and remastered the deleted scene, superimposing a rough CGI version of Jabba over the actor and including it in the 1997 special edition release. They later went on to re-edit it again and replace it with better CGI in later releases. In fact, there is even a fan edited version that completely changes Jabba into a Hologram, which honestly makes the most sense, imo.
23:10 wanted to drop this little fun fact; After the Clone Wars, where the Seperatists (the "bad guys") battled against the Republic (now the Empire), they had HOARDS of battel droids to fight for them. They were programed to be relentless and merciless. So in the early days of the Empire and even during the New Republic, droids were basically considered even less than second class citizens, despite their advanced programing and usefulness. The carnage the droids brought during the Clone Wars just remained too fresh in the minds of people, making them untrustworthy in their eyes, hence the "racist" remarks to the droids in this scene. Funny enough, there were a few attempted droid rebellions, but most were either isolated or were eliminated before they could spread.
38:34 Wow, just the mental image of a Stormtrooper depressingly flushing his beloved pet after Tarkin or Vader said "I'm sorry, we can't keep it" is great😂
This was actually an independent film. It originally released as The Star Wars. They had no idea how good it was going to do. There were several times during production it almost got shutdown
So this actually isn't technically the original. This is one of the special editions. In about the 90s they went back and remastered it from the original film reels. And then I think in 2005 George went back again and added lots of little details that he wasn't able to in 77. Like all of that CGI stuff wasn't in the original.
They also edited scenes and redubbed lines Which have all been universally condemned as unneeded For example greedo shooting first The dubbed lines in return if the Jedi Horrendous CGI of random animals and stuff that has no purpose but to clutter up the screen...
The glow of the lightsaber fight between vader and Obi-wan alone show that. The bit of Biggs enthusiasm meeting Luke was great stuff they shouldn´t have cut. Han Solo interaction with Jabba this early on was fun too. Graphic deaths Owen and Beru more impact. Overall of the trilogy the New Hope is far and wide the best in remastered form.
@@embran8486Couldn't disagree more. Fine, touching up mistakes and adding some pretty skyboxes is fine. But the rest of the changes detract from the movie, especially the CG stuff that stick out like a sore thumb.
The R5 droid unit intentionly blew his motivator so R2 and C3P0 wouldn't be seperated, after R2 told him the Rebellion needed him. R5 escaped the sandcrawler stormtrooper attack and joined the Rebellion
25:25 - You have it reversed. In the theatrical 1977 version, Han shot first. Then in 1997, they changed it to Greedo shooting first, to make Han seem more like a good guy.
And the reason it was cut in the original (Lucas had no control over the cut and editing, as it was his ex wife that did it) Was because the entire conversation is just a repeat of everything that was said between greedo and han But If George wanted to have the CGI scene in there so it went in later.
@@mckenzie.latham91Not quite true. They filmed it with the intention to add a stop motion Jabba onto the scene. Upon realizing they lack to the budget, they adjusted the Greedo dialogue to get across all the information that the Jabba would have.

27:26 "Why does everybody have a problem with droids in this world?" This is actually very well explained by the events of the prequels, especially the clone wars, which I am obviously not going to spoil.
40:58 Mark Hamil also voices Emperor Griffon in the English version of Dark Cloud 2 (PS2 game from ~2002), while Scott Menville voiced the protagonist. Scott also voiced Robin in Teen Titans, making DC2 the first time "Robin" fought "Joker." And that's your fun, but Sorta Stupid Fun Fact about voice actors!
So, lore tidbit about why everyone's racist towards droids: It's been about twenty or thirty years since the Clone Wars, during which one of the belligerents was the Confederacy of Independent Systems. The CIS primarily used armies of battle droids to fight this war, and planets of the Outer Rim (like Tattooine), saw horrific destruction and terror wrought at the hands of droid armies. So anyone old enough to remember the clone wars is going to have some very bad memories related to droids. Hence, why they're not wanted in a bar. Hell, it wouldn't surprise me if the sight of a droid triggers ptsd in some people.
26:04 😍 501st legion is a very wide non profit organization (Super happy you know and are telling others about it) they focus on the "dark side" movie accurate costumes. All costumes are hand made ❤ In my area there is a separate group for the rebel costumes, but they are not as well known. Most of the rebel members are also 501st members or former members
8:35"Even the CGI from them doesn't look that bad" CGI did not exist in 1977. These shots are from the rerelease of Star Wars in 1997 The Special Editions.
To be clear: In the 1977 original, when Greedo was about to fire at Han, the camera cut to an explosion effect over Greedo, then cut back to the wider shot as a smoldering Greedo falls onto the table, so we mostly infer that Han shot pre-emptively. Meanwhile, George Lucas himself says that his intention was for Greedo to take the first shot allowing Han to act in self-defense. But a lot of fans prefer the pre-emptive shot (aka. "Han shot first") due to what it implies about Han's character at this point in the story. Jabba's appearance in this film was originally a deleted scene, with a human actor playing the role of Jabba. Despite him being mentioned in this film and its sequel (Empire Strikes Back), Jabba's appearance as an alien slug was actually not decided until the third film in the trilogy (Return of the Jedi). 54:10 - Final Fantasy 7 wasn't the first game to have a Biggs and Wedge. In Final Fantasy 6, you started the game with two redshirts also named Biggs (or "Vicks") and Wedge.
For multiplayer games, the Battlefront series is famous. For single-player, I am a huge fan of Jedi: Fallen Order, a souls-like with some really cool exploration elements.
so something funny, the jabba scene at 26:45 was filmed before jabba was turned into a massive slug monster. there's unedited footage of the scene where Jabba is actually a human man, and "The Hutt" is just a title or something. he talks in galactic common and everything. thats why solo calls him a "wonderful human being". this scene was cut from theatrical release, and apparently added back in for the cgi releases where they CGI'ed over old jabba with a slug monster. they even edited solo to walk over his tail. also talking about all the CGI, I'm pretty sure the original theatrical release had NO CGI whatsoever. it was all practical. there are some CGI scenes that are added for this cut, and even some scenes where disappointingly they went over previously practical effects with CGI and replaced them. (edit) oh also, something really cool. all the lightsaber and laser effects and stuff were done by literally cutting out sections of film or drawing them on. cutting out film would allow the light from the projector to blast through, causing bright light effects like that. some of the space scenes are literally done with this method by poking out tons of tiny dots in the film. also a lot of spaceship scenes are two film pieces of "space background" and "miniature space ship" film that have been physically cut together by cutting out a hole shaped like the space ship in the film and then overlaying the two film pieces over eachother. if you look up how they did all these old effects for films from this era, especially star wars, it's SO FASCINATING how they did everything that they did.
I will correct you Boom! lol In the original cut Han shoots first, in the 90s when George re-edited them for the Special Editions and all future versions it's edited so that Greedo shot first because they wanted Han to be a hero and they felt him killing him before Greedo even gets a shot off was too villainous... but the whole point of him is right now he is a shady murky char who eventually will be redeemed.
So since This is obviously the Disney+ release which are based on the 1997 "Special editions" that added some new shots some CGI revisions and stuff like that. Like pointed out in the video In the Theatrical release han Actually did shoot first. But a second one is the conversation Han had with Jabba. Ever notice how Han Says "Jabba you're a wonderful human being" when Jabba Clearly isn't Human. That's because In the original theatrical Cut Jabba in fact WAS a Human They also Added Boba Fett there next to him He was just completely absent in the original movie because well His introduction Wasn't untill a Small animated short segment In the Star wars Holiday Special (which came out in 78 a year after a new hope) and then made his movie Debut in Empire strikes back. Other stuff included were mostly just some new CGI establishing shots and new effects
So the whole thing about "Han shot first" is that in the theatrical release Han Shot and Greedo didn't shoot.. later they remade it so Greedo shot and missed... So fans say "Han shot first" or "Han shot PERIOD" since there was no second shot..

I'm hard pressed to think of a lot of modern movies that can say the same
There's a story about filming Vader's first scene and Mark Hamill (being the young relatively inexperienced actor) said to Lucas "Shouldn't we have two of rebels say "That's Vader, he's the evil x, y, and z that did this this and this?". @@Renoistic they realised that by rotj
Some of the CGI was added later, specifically animals/mounts, and jabba the hut. I want to say they were added in the mid 90s
The lore is that the barkeeper's parents were killed by battle droids, that's why he doesn't want them in his cantina

Also, great Star Wars games are Jedi: Fallen Order, Jedi: Survivor, and Star Wars Battlefront 2
They also edited scenes and redubbed lines
Which have all been universally condemned as unneeded
For example greedo shooting first
The dubbed lines in return if the Jedi
Horrendous CGI of random animals and stuff that has no purpose but to clutter up the screen...
I'm baffled that the reactors think the CG is from 77. What are they smoking.
@@embran8486Couldn't disagree more. Fine, touching up mistakes and adding some pretty skyboxes is fine. But the rest of the changes detract from the movie, especially the CG stuff that stick out like a sore thumb.

The Jabba scene wasn't in all the VHS tapes actually. Later a special edition of the VHS tapes was released that included the deleted scenes.
And the reason it was cut in the original (Lucas had no control over the cut and editing, as it was his ex wife that did it)

It's been about twenty or thirty years since the Clone Wars, during which one of the belligerents was the Confederacy of Independent Systems.

Despite him being mentioned in this film and its sequel (Empire Strikes Back), Jabba's appearance as an alien slug was actually not decided until the third film in the trilogy (Return of the Jedi).

so something funny, the jabba scene at 26:45 was filmed before jabba was turned into a massive slug monster. there's unedited footage of the scene where Jabba is actually a human man, and "The Hutt" is just a title or something. he talks in galactic common and everything. thats why solo calls him a "wonderful human being". this scene was cut from theatrical release, and apparently added back in for the cgi releases where they CGI'ed over old jabba with a slug monster. they even edited solo to walk over his tail.
also talking about all the CGI, I'm pretty sure the original theatrical release had NO CGI whatsoever. it was all practical. there are some CGI scenes that are added for this cut, and even some scenes where disappointingly they went over previously practical effects with CGI and replaced them.
Han: “Jabba, you’re a wonderful human being.”
Jabba: “I’m not a human being.”
Han: “exactly.”
He actually was originally going to be a human.
With every new channel reacting to Star Wars, A New Hope arises: The hope that they like the prequels and watch The Clone Wars.
George Lucus haz bizzare priorities
It's his first time seeing Star wars. That's that's so sweet😂😂😂😂😂😂
Rest in Peace, James Earl Jones :(
So the whole thing about "Han shot first" is that in the theatrical release Han Shot and Greedo didn't shoot.. later they remade it so Greedo shot and missed...
So fans say "Han shot first" or "Han shot PERIOD" since there was no second shot..

Fun fact, George Lucas got full merchandising rights for Star Wars instead of a higher salary, and kept the sequel rights because Fox thought it was going to flop
Ruff’s reaction to Mark Hammil might be the best thing on this channel
No, I don't believe this. There's no way that Ruff of all people hasn't --
"They're not gonna read it out loud?"
Okay, carry on.
He doesn’t even know about the reveal in ESB very clearly, he’s gonna be the first guy since the 80s to have an actual reaction to it. 😂
I am just flabbergasted that he didn't know Mark was LUKE SKYWALKER.
Did you know, in 1955, Alec Guinness was one of the first persons James Dean showed his new Porsche to. When he seen it he said it felt sinister and hungry and told James not to get in it, if he did he would be dead in a week. 1 week later James Dean was in a head on collision with the only other car on the road and died. Almost force level premonition
"This is where the fun begins"
"You've taken your first step into a larger world." Is going to be the theme for Ruff with this entire series, and I can't wait for it.
