Coming up on 600 miles on ours. Love it so far. Just enough truck for our use case, just enough car for comfortable travel. We did get the Activity Package, no regrets there. We love the locking/retracting tonneau cover. If it ever gets in the way, we could remove it. But, again, not likely in our typical use case. We brought home a storm door without issue, as well as about 300lbs of counter top, longest piece being 8'-2", about 30 miles of mixed driving. If it is a reliable vehicle long-term, we'll have no regrets at all.
My husband test drove one (the Limited), I enjoyed it. If I didn’t have my ‘21 Outback XT touring that I absolutely adore, I could be convinced on the Santa Cruz.
I have almost 60,000km (~40k miles) on my 22 Ultimate (Limited in the US) and after 18 months with it now, it's my favourite vehicle EVER. It still puts a smile on my face every single day. It stll makes me turn my head and stare a little every time I walk up to it/away from it in driveways and parking lots. And I'm still getting 26-30mpg with the turbo - which is NOT a turtle by any means. Love the DCT too!! Oh - and the "sub" for the premium stereo isn't under the back seats, it's behind them. You don't lose any of that storage. I moved my jack into the brunk so all the interior space was available. Got my booster cables, extra washer fluid, and whatnot in there too.
I feel the same way! I've got a '22 Limited (US). I look for excuses to take it out. It just makes me happy to drive it. Plus I've lost count of how many times people stop me to ask about it, and look it over. In fact, I just had a guy ask me what it was just a couple of weeks ago - this for a truck that's been out for 2 years.

Love to see these videos about your Santa Cruz! I bought an SEL Premium last month and I love it so far. Lots of power, but I do worry about the DCT transmission's long term reliability. With the 10 year/100,000 mile warranty though, I'm not worried about it for many years, and I don't plan to do much off roading. Mine is a 2022 model purchased in 2023, so I was able to get $1000 off MSRP with no dealer add-ons. Kudos to McDonald Hyundai in Littleton, CO!
@@Gabrielxkl So far so good! I haven't driven in deep snow, but with the stock all-season tires I haven't had any trouble through a few snow storms this winter in Denver. 4 inches of snow was the deepest I drove in.
And I desperately wish they’d bring the Baja back. My husband (test drove a Maverick and a Santa Cruz) said if Subaru brought the Baja back, he’d be in line!
I checked it out in 2003 but it was too small, smaller than Cruz. Soon after, the Element was introduced and it was the perfect car for me at the time. As the Element was aging I was all set on replacing it with the Santa Cruz, but then out of nowhere Maverick Hybrid was announced and I had to put an order in. Picked it up in May 2022 and no regrets so far, paid MSRP with a few options XLT for 25k.
I have the same - year, trim, and color. Love my track. Already replaced heater HVAC box. Dealer has to rip and remove the dashboard completely. The noise from air blowing direction was from day one when I switched from window blowing to face. But didn’t affect the comfort of air. Now all is good. After 6 month already 17 k. Love my track
Nice to see you can actually drive yours! My limited has been at the dealership for over a month due to a leaky sunroof, currently it's at their auto body shop. They've replaced all of the parts around it but still leaks. No buyers remorse yet.
Just sell it as soon as the warranty runs out. Fortunately, you probably have a loaner vehicle for now. You’re definitely going have buyers remorse when you start having to pay for the repairs!! These Korean cars are still junk.
@@alanj7306 “Korean auto brands Kia, Genesis and Hyundai earn three of the top four rankings in the newly redesigned J.D. Power 2022 U.S. Vehicle Dependability StudySM (VDS), released today.” Facts seem to disagree with your BS.
From Colorado Springs, excellent choice my fellow Colorado friend. Please consider off road test between yours and the long term test Santa Cruz that has the double clutch and turbo with the same tires as your new tires. Rumors State the Santa Cruz will be offered in an AWD Hybrid in 2024 likely as a 2025 model and refresh.
I bought the Turbo model with bed cover (and tailgate fence). I had a VW GLI manual, that my aging husband could not get in and out of with out hitting his head. I took the opportunity to trade during the high used car price bubble and made money off of the GLI. I already have SUVs that my kids are driving and missed AWD. I decided to get a bit of everything and got the turbo I missed, a very roomy front seat for Hubs, and a gardening and homestead truck. We live rural so need to take garbage, fill large gas cans, and carry feed bags and straw and things like that. This is just enough truck to keep the car clean inside. Only complaint I don't hear or read anywhere is the Low Beams or the head lights seem wrong somehow. Fortunately I can keep them in high auto dimming mode most of the time. I have taken some forest roads and logging trails other mountain gravel and dirt roads in state and national parks and don't see the Dual clutch transmission being a problem. I guess these are not real off road experiences but this vehichle did fine and I am used to flying down such roads as a former rural mail carrier. I can drive on my terraced rural property/ pastures, and go over a curb if needed. It has nearly truck like clearance and handles riding around on unpaved surfaces nicely. My old ford truck slips with its rear wheel drive and I have to get out and lock its hubs. So nice to just glide on and off with the Santa Cruz.
AT winter tires are rated three peak for deep snow, not compacted snow and ice. A set of Blizzak DM-V2'S or similar will smoke the AT's in the winter, but then again you can keep using those AT's after it gets warm out. I like having winter tires on in the winter for the great traction. It's also fun to step on it at the traffic light during a winter snow and watch the jeeps with AT's try to keep up.
I had something similar to these tires on my B4000 pickup some time ago. The lateral handling was pretty bad, but they really did everything else very well. My Goodyear Eagles handled like it was on rails... not the ones in Ohio lol 😂.. probably too soon. I’ve always liked the BFG’s though and for Colorado, I’d sacrifice the handling for better winter weather driving.
Over 11k on my. Best add. Weather tech floor mate. Bed liner. And those expensive A55 mud flaps $89. Worth every dime. I kid not. My land is very sandy muddy no roads. Normally dirt collects on fenders. No more. Those little tiny things work. Fit perfect worth it. Thanks on tire tips. Same color. Your comparison with mav helped me. I needed a car for Father’s Day to see my dad. Tried the sel was impressed. Like I told the dealer, I need a mule low cost get the job done can park. Lil truck gets it done
We purchased a 2023 Ultimate trim same colour in November 22 ordered it in March 22. Was told that factory is now restricting dealerships in Canada to, two Santa Cruz's per month. Thanks for the video and the interesting nickname suggestion. We chose to call ours the "Grey Beast."
Totally agree with your decisions. I'm not sure why most reviews are of the higher end fully-featured models. One big decision to get to non turbo model is the dual clutch transmission which I hear has significant reliability problems. This car will last longer too.
I've said the SAME THING about my 2nd to 3rd gear having a hesitation/stutter with my standard 8 speed SC. I did tell the dealership and they said they test drove it but they, of course, said they didn't notice anything. But they did document my complaint for future reference. And in relation to the AT tires...I did the same but put on the Falken Wildpeak AT Trails and kept the stock size ratio. Initially, I did notice about 1-2 mpg lower, but after about 600 miles, I may be back to factory MPGs. Still though...I freaking love my SC!
"We didn't notice anything unusual" and "It's normal for this vehicle" are standard responses from Hyundai service depts. I went through that for 3yrs with two different Hyundai dealerships regarding various problems with my new Elantra. The 10yr/100k mile warranty is useless if they're in constant denial about problems. I like Hyundai vehicles, but the frustration they cause is enough to push me over to a brand like Toyota which has a much shorter warranty, but a better reliability track record.
I am always cautious about tires that offer high mile warranties. To get that you are usually trading it for grip & braking capability in the wet and at low temperatures.
I can see the tires as being a huge improvement. Also, I think the standard auto is what you want for even light off road duty. That dual clutch isn't a good combination for slip. And it's always a good idea to get what your wife likes.
@@craigquann Maybe crawling, but I have bumped right up against its towing capacity (5000lbs) and it handled it just fine towing all through the mountains of WV.
This is an excellent vehicle for your purposes. I’m looking into one but have a 1,500 lb camper I’d like to tow with. Still not sure how the DCT will last over the years but that turbo option would be needed for going though the mountains towing in my opinion
I've got a '22 turbo. I also have a 22' pontoon boat that I'm guesstimating is 3000 lbs. I also live in a very hilly part of the country. Pulling the boat out of the water up a steep ramp, towing it over steep hills, is a non-issue with the turbo. I don't notice I'm towing anything at all. I've also towed an ATV, about 1000 lbs, and have accelerated from 70 to 80-85 mph in seconds. It just goes. If you're considering this truck, and you know you'll be towing, I highly recommend the turbo. It has power to spare. I suppose the DCT is not built for longevity, but I've made it to 20k miles, so far, so good. If Hyundai stands behind it's warranty, I'm covered for 100k.
I own 2 Hyundai vehicles and I have found the stock tires to be awful in anything more that dry and wet weather. Even though they are 4 seasion radials, their slush, snow and ice performance has been poor. I've owned snow tires in the past but we decided to upgrade to a better all season tire and have been happer but am considering sets of snow tires on spare rims. Nathan, keep crankin out those Santa Cruz videos. I will be buying a new vehicle this summer that will either be a Santa Cruz or Colorado Trail Boss.
Thanks for your overall experience with the Santa Cruz. I have a small pickup (6 ft bed) that I only use it for yard waste, which I would like to replace. My first preference is the Ridgeline but too expensive, the Maverick is still getting over MSRP for them, and may consider this Santa Cruz. That way this vehicle can be something I can use every day as well as doing "dump runs". (if they sell a bed extender for them). I like those tires you got. Amazed they have a 60K mile rating with them having such a beefy tread.
@@FrameRot I really don't, I'm just looking for a new reasonably priced AWD or 4WD truck that is being sold for MSRP. (I haven't found a Tacoma, Ranger, or Forester for under $34K. They may sell them but none available.) (no GM please))
Thank you for the overview of the tires - I'm going to get a set of the stock 18" wheels (like shown) and mount these tires as my "winter" ones - I have a '22 limited with 10k miles on it purchased in August of '21 - it's been a great vehicle with no mechanical issues - only an issue with the passenger seat bottom's leather which was corrected by the dealer. If I were to ever consider going off road I'd want the traditional automatic transmission too - I'm okay with the DCT largely due to the fact that I've had other Kia/Hyundai products with a DCT and not had any issues with it (but am aware that other owners have had significant issues).
I recently bought a ‘23 Maverick XLT and really like it (2.0L Ecoboost) and it is great! However, I also like the Santa Cruz. It’s design is very cool looking though I think I would feel a bit cramped in it. I traded a '21 Corolla which was a bit cramped. The Mav feels big on the inside though it is a compact SUT. The SC looks like a 21st Century vehicle. I put a retractable bed cover on my Mav but then I don’t expect to do a lot of hauling big stuff.
Honestly seeing Nate like one of these still surprises me as he’s always struck me as a ford or Chevy full size guy. Toyota needs to answer these new unibody utes
I currently own a Kona (my first Hyundai) and I am happy with it but feel my next vehicle will be a small truck. However, I live in the northern Rockies part of the US so AWD is necessary and I want a hybrid, specifically a plug in hybrid. So, it will probably depend on who delivers that first since nobody at the moment is doing it. Hyundai has a PHEV Tucson so they could do that with the Santa Cruz and Ford has the tech to do an AWD hybrid Maverick but still hasn't. We'll see if the rumors that Toyota will offer a hybrid on the next Tacoma or show up with a small truck of their own. Either way, I think hybrids in trucks are the future, not electric trucks, at least for now.
Funny thing is that the Maverick is more expensive than most people think it is. The Maverick is still one of the highest pay over MSRP vehicles on the market. You'll find a Santa Cruz easier for a similar price point. I'm happy I went with the Santa Cruz though. It's made of better quality material.
Once you option out a Maverick to compete with the Santa Cruz, you quickly realize you're getting a cheaper quality trucklet for similar money as the Santa Cruz. Factor in the insane dealer market on the Maverick and it's grotesquely overpriced compared to the Santa Cruz.
@@palebeachbum Absolutely. You might actually end up saving more money on the Santa Cruz. And good luck if you anyone can get a Maverick for under MSRP. A person would be like the 0.001% if they were able to find the Maverick at base retail price with no mark up
@@palebeachbum I really like the Maverick but part of its appeal to me is it's economy pricing. I couldn't imagine paying 10k over sticker on a vehicle built so cheap. I think it's safe to say that currently, the Maverick is really overrated for what it is. I'm not saying it's not good, I'm not saying I don't want one, but when it's main selling point is it's price and you pay more than MSRP you kinda shoot yourself in the foot. It's like paying the price of food at a good 4-5 star joint for the quality you get out of a chain restaurant like Applebee's. Yeah it's food, and it can even be good food, but it's not good enough to command that price.
I love my 2022 Maverick I use it for a small business, but I also agree that the prices are crazy these days, tried buying another one here in Colorado and the best deal I could find was 5k over msrp I guess I got lucky to get an XLT with luxury package for 29k.. I'm getting a Santa Cruz for 7k less with more options , I like the maverick just sounds crazy to pay that much more money for a budget truck
The stock tires are ALSO M/S rated but i am sure those are better. Snow tires are suggested to be replaced when down to 50% tread for best traction. I am looking or deciding between the SC SEL AWD myself but i can get a 2023 Tradesman 1500 2 door with 8 foot bed for 39 grand
Have you tried finding roof rails at a salvage yard? The salvage yard I go to buys vehicles that have been totaled and sells the parts. If someone gets into an accident that destroys the front or back of the truck the roof rails will still be in perfect condition. If you want good all season tires with white lettering try TOYO Open Country A/T III.
Still want one of these. Couldn’t find one without markups. Following this for your long term. Still wish they had a awd hybrid version non turbo option
So I have 2023 Santa Cruz limited @ 1200 miles transmission problem dealer has no fix, they did a update. Same problem with the 2022 Santa Cruz transmission recall & no fix.
Plan on this being my family vehicle while my kids are still kids. They're small enough for the small back seat area to not be a bother. Plan on taking it on camping tricks, soccer dad/mom events with the kids, trips to the creek. Enough bed space to pack camping supplies/picnic supplies. Enough style to take it out on night drives for nights out with the lady. Going with a 2024 SEL trim with activity package.
Currently looking at the Maverick and the Santa Cruz as a daily driver. I’ll be doing some towing to and from the racetrack a few times a year. I can’t seem to find any Maverick’s without markups, while the Santa Cruz can still be found fully loaded without markups. Santa Cruz is becoming the front runner.
Glad you like the Trail Terrains, I was looking at them as upgrades to the Firestones currently on my Jeep Renegade and tire rack has them in my size. The Firestones are good tires compared to the continentals that where on it when I bought it, but their winter and dirt preformance is understandably lacking seeing as they are 3 season road tires. I had a hard time finding tires for it when I bought it because it was optioned with the 18" wheels by the original owner, and I don't have the disposable cash to drop on new wheels alongside new tires. And I'm with you on needing a commuter that can do light offroading. I don't need real lockers or anything for what I do, just a good AWD slip management system and ground clearance.
Nathan that BFG tire is 6lbs./20% heavier than the stock Kuhmo. I am curious how the suspension handled the extra weight, did you notice any "tire shake" or other negative handeling aspects of the heavier tire?
I got the 2022 Santa Cruz SEL Premium to tow up to 5000. I've had my transmission serviced in the recall already but never had issues with it. I'm still not clear why you have such a big problem with it. I got a 4-year 0% loan on my Santa Cruz SEL Premium. I didn't need the loan, but I'll take it while it was available.
I'd like to hear more about your experience towing with the non turbo version. I'm looking seriously at the Santa Cruz as the tow vehicle for a 2,000 lb pop-up camper that I'd like to get.
Other issue with the Maverick hybrid, you can't get AWD with that powertrain. It's only an option with the gas engine. That's a dealbreaker for us as we live in snow country too.
Just picked up SC SEL this week and love it so far. Wanted the tonneau cover but not $3k activity package. Just enough pickup for me. The great warranties also helped the decision. This thing feels substantial and worth the $$. Turbo would be nice but no way was I getting that dual clutch. I had waited 520 days on my Maverick hybrid and have no regrets getting the SC. I plan on keeping this 10+ years along with my trusty Forester.
@@billbobagginsbonham9239 🤔 it’s totally possible, time will tell. The warranty helps the risk. Nothing these days are as good as 10+ years ago. My Hondas from the 90s were rock solid.
@@bclov Yes my turbo Santa Cruz is amazing and its pulling a 6,000 pound boat and trailer and not an issue. The warranty Hyundai gives you is by far the best. This thing is a beast..... I love my Santa Cruz.....
Great little review! I've tossed back and forth between the Santa Cruz and Maverick. I like the styling of the SC more, but the power of the Maverick, available in even the base trim with a regular transmission is a big plus. There's been good and not-so-good reported on both, first year introductory issues at best in most of the cases. I ask myself, though, do I need the power and rear seat room of the Maverick with that nice torquey engine, or would I prefer the more sporty styled SC w/ the base engine which could more than likely be a more reliable and rather on par with efficiency. Something tells me to pass on the Mav. I've ordered and opt for the SC I have wanted since the concept previewed too many years ago. The SC interior is certainly less gimmicky and more adult, yet there's something about the quirky Mav. interior that makes it fun; except for that rotary shift knob which people tend to not like in any vehicle....
Great addition on the new tires but man that sucks to pay for tires from the factory which are part of the loan and then take them right off the car and spend money for 4 new tires. Hope you were able to sell the factory ones to cover at least half the cost of the BFG's , unless those were donated/promotional. Still getting great fuel economy and that price is still reasonable compared to average new vehicles today. The back seat is quite a compromise in legroom but if it isn't used that often then its fine.
Could you post a link to those tires? When I search BFGoodrich Trail-Terrain T/A I get a link to an Amazon Tire with raised white letters. I’m not sure if it’s the same or will fit.
My daughter in-law had a hundyai and she was taking it in for a scheduled oil change and she lost the motor it took her about 4 months to get it back. She now had a ford suv and loves it
I will be putting Falken At Trails on mine at some point use. My stocks as spares.... the stock tires are ok... but yeah... ur right the kumhos are worthless
Did you disclose whether you bought the tires or got them via TFL's partnership with BFG? I'm guessing that is an added cost of $800 to $1000....ie not chump change.
Nathan could you not order the roof rails from a paint and body shop and have them replace them... if that car got hit and the flat black piece got damaged the paint and body should would hv to replace the piece... so see if they can just replace the roof rails with the raised roof rails... just a possible trick... let me know what you think?

Not a bargain in canada. $42.5k minimum and they force you into the turbo and the awful DCT transmission which has had recalls and failures. I would be much happier with a non turbo engine and a normal torq conv transmission.
I’m with you Nathan, I was bummed when I got my new tires for my Jeep that I couldn’t get the raised white letters. It seems like it’s getting harder and harder to find a good set of tires with raised white letters.
I am getting a Ford Maverick, it arrived at the dealership on Saturday, it is not inexpensive once you add options. Just curious, anyone have an idea as to the cost of having an aftermarket turbo put on the N/A motor? Ballpark estimate works, and yeah I get that it probably voids your warranty when it comes to dealer repairs.
People just don't know how to drive a car with DTC. You have to treat it as a manual transmission. Don't creep with it when you start commit to it. Off road put it in manual mode and shif it yourself to prevent a lot of slippage. If treat it properly it will last a very long time. It is basically an automated manual transmission. Quick efficient

I'm still dreaming of the Baja's return!!! 💜
the baja, y'all must be some young people, the Subaru Brat was ahead of its time
I have the same - year, trim, and color. Love my track. Already replaced heater HVAC box. Dealer has to rip and remove the dashboard completely. The noise from air blowing direction was from day one when I switched from window blowing to face. But didn’t affect the comfort of air. Now all is good. After 6 month already 17 k. Love my track
My Dad loves his SEL Premium Santa Cruz. It's been reliable for him without any complaints, despite the reports about the DCT.

I ran Falken Wildpeaks on our 22 Hyndai Santa Fe and they have been great all winter on the front range.
I have the same BFG trail terrains on my ‘22 Tucson Hybrid and they’re awesome for light off-road use. Really quiet and comfortable on road too.
I just traded in my 2021 Chevy colorado z71 for the 2023 Hyundai Santa Cruz Se. Thanks to you Nathan 😊
Agreed, im glad to see a SEL Trim review finally.
I have these tires on my 13 Grand Cherokee and they’re absolutely amazing! They perform great on highway as well as snow/gravel.
I am always cautious about tires that offer high mile warranties. To get that you are usually trading it for grip & braking capability in the wet and at low temperatures.
Does the sel have a dark zone in the driver side headlight? My 2023 limited has a dark zone that is very annoying.
I can see the tires as being a huge improvement. Also, I think the standard auto is what you want for even light off road duty. That dual clutch isn't a good combination for slip. And it's always a good idea to get what your wife likes.
Yup. DCT's don't do well with slow speed crawling or stop n go towing.
@@craigquann Maybe crawling, but I have bumped right up against its towing capacity (5000lbs) and it handled it just fine towing all through the mountains of WV.
It’s so good to Nathan! Love your videos. Keep ‘em coming good sir.
Just ordered a 23 SE because of the analog gauges and the key. Can't wait for it to be built
Mine came with a bed extender from the dealer at no charge!
@@bshelley234 Cool...nice to know they are available. Thanks.
Why do you want a smaller bed?

A small Rooftop tent would make these a decent little touring/overlander. Especially for weekend fishing/hunting/mountain biking trips.
Honestly seeing Nate like one of these still surprises me as he’s always struck me as a ford or Chevy full size guy. Toyota needs to answer these new unibody utes
Hopefully, the Toyota Stout will be coming out to our neck of the woods.
Hybrid every vehicle should be the future. Need more people to realize the b.s. that EVs are and demand hybrids with inspired design, though.
A person would be like the 0.001% if they were able to find the Maverick at base retail price with no mark up
@@soulsage1984 exactly. I was in a Ford Maverick FB group and people were commonly paying $2k-$10k over MSRP. I've seen as much as $15k over though.
Nice looking small truck. Made a good choice and didn't buy the turbo. Because of the dual clutch reliability problems.
@5:35... The roof rails aren't available as a "kit", but you can buy them as replacement parts.
I can’t seem to find them. Where did you find them?
@@NathanDAdlen I'll see if I can find them again. It was a parts explosion of the roof.

Enough style to take it out on night drives for nights out with the lady. Going with a 2024 SEL trim with activity package.

I was wondering why you didn't go with the Maverick, I'm glad you explained. Your money spend it on what makes you happy.
Currently looking at the Maverick and the Santa Cruz as a daily driver. I’ll be doing some towing to and from the racetrack a few times a year. I can’t seem to find any Maverick’s without markups, while the Santa Cruz can still be found fully loaded without markups. Santa Cruz is becoming the front runner.
i bought one as a daily driver than my chevy 2500 i love it. drives like a little truck once you put a 2 inch lift on it.
I put a two inch lift kit on mine and the same tires two sizes bigger. It handles excellent I love mine

It's only an option with the gas engine.

Just picked up SC SEL this week and love it so far. Wanted the tonneau cover but not $3k activity package.
Just enough pickup for me. The great warranties also helped the decision. This thing feels substantial and worth the $$. Turbo would be nice but no way was I getting that dual clutch. I think my preferred version of the Santa Cruz would be the turbo engine without the tonneau cover but with a roof rack. Most overall utility.
In the back seat , can you remove cargo storage , for dog space ?
I got the SE model and I need the roof rack so bad!!! I was hoping to install it later but apparently it won’t accept original roof racks !

Did you get the factory tow hitch or an aftermarket one?
