You would think that as a 70+ music lover I should have learned an important lesson. People, Please, listen to new music/musicians as often as you can. There are so many great surprises like Marcus King. Man, i’m glad i found him.
My granddad hung himself 17 years ago, when we lived about 15 minutes from each other in a larger town in South Carolina. I never really saw it coming at the time. Our last interaction with each other was the day before, and did not go near the way that I would want last moments to happen between myself and my loved ones. I've spent years wondering why he bowed out so abruptly....and then I heard this song a few months ago. It sent shivers down my spine, and every hair on me got goosebumps. I don't get that often from many songs, and this one by far hit me harder than any other. I must have listened to Goodbye Carolina at least 200 times since, but couldn't figure out why I was drawn to it so much. I began listening to other live versions that Marcus King has done of this song since it was released, and I ran across an acoustic version where he describes how he wrote this song about a friend of his who killed himself in Greenville, South Carolina. All of a sudden, it all made sense. Thank you, Marcus King, for letting me hear from my granddad one last time, and giving me the closure that I needed all of these years.
This song was played at my dad's funeral 💔 😔 I grew up with marcus king.. . Went to the same high school and middle school with him......thanks for the incredible chance to play you at my best friends funeral.... I LOVE YOU DADDY Leroy raines 1967-2021
Agreed. I’m 52, and I’m mainly a metal fan, death metal, actually, but when I heard Marcus King….Jesus. Such soul, such talent, such everything. Pardon my language, but he’s fucking incredible. This one and “Side Door” move something in me, I can’t explain it. Good stuff.
Wow. I just heard this song for the first time tonight, I was memorized. Marcus sounds like he left a piece of his soul in this song. Love the grit in his voice in the higher notes. Thanks Marcus
His Father, Grandfather, and Great Grandfather were all professional musicians- it's in his blood! His main guitar is a Wine Red 1962 Gibson ES-345 that belonged to his Grandfather. It's got 60 years of blood, sweat, and tears in it and his gifted hands are capable of squeezing every drop of those 60 years of blood, sweat, and tears from deep within it's vintage wood!
We've got a Code Blue (someone who has stopped breathing and lost a heartbeat), we need Marcus King turned up to TEN STAT! CLEAR.......OK he's back. Stabilize him and treat as meeded!
The Marcus King Band is like a breath of fresh air and sun on a cloudy day. I don't think I'm alone when I say that it seems I have been waiting for this band to come along for quite some time. Touching video to further immortalize this great song and band!
The Marcus King Band you guys gave me HOPE during one of the most trying times in my life. Your song about the polarization of Humanity should be played in every Art classroom across America! Amen! Hallelujah! #RyanALopez13
Carolina the Great Smokies my home my whole life. Ginseng pulling bare footed as a boy. I left Carolina after winning a protection order for my boys. Came home to the Suwannee music festival. First song I heard!! Signs are everywhere you just have to see them!
What a world we live in that this only has 500k views and some of that mumble rap shit get's billions.... but, in 10/20/30 years time, people will STILL be playing Marcus King....
My only comment is WOW !!!!My daughter died because of fentanyl in her 20’s and her favorite song is Carolina In My Mind by James Taylor so many of these lyrics apply ❤☮️
Im so glad you made it man! I took guitar lessons from your dad as a kid and he talked about you all the time! I hope he’s still playing that same old wood guitar with the pinky groove 🤙
Marcus it's been years !!! I'm so proud of you. I still remember you knocking out gigs in downtown Greenville Before When it was all Starting.... Keep it up Your friends are watching and we are definitely proud !!!!!
Marcus king is an incredible musician/singer/ songwriter. Very few on the modern music scene can compare to his extraordinary talent. Marcus King's soulful voice and lyrics block out some of the "noise". He's leaving a trail of broken hearts across the country.. Men with heart/soul like his are too rare these days.
When I heard him tell about why he wrote this,it just really stayed w me and I've listened to it so many times. It's a beautiful, but heartbreaking song. It's absolutely unforgettable
I’m so mad at whoever broke this dudes heart. Only a broken heart can make a sound like this. Brother for the first time since my son died I cried listening to this song
I saw the Marcus King band on PBS back in 2019 I can't tell you how grateful I am that I found this band he is an amazing singer and an amazing guitar player I look forward to seeing them perform live!
I'm in love with this song. Saw "Hard Working Man" on Jimmy Fallon last week. I'm mad I haven't heard of him sooner! Lol.....can't believe I haven't? First album in 2014? N I live in indiana....🤔. I'm spreadin him around though! 💕
"Goodbye Carolina" I dreamed of the day when I'd hold you in my arms again Read you all the letters I wrote but never sent Give you all the pieces of me To put 'em back together Put them back together again Life has a way of writing your story for you And the hero doesn't always get his girl What if you could change the ending to the novel they been writing Leave no resolution So, Goodbye Carolina, searched my whole life to find you I hate to leave you but I hope you'll know Where I'm going I'll be seeing you So hold my hand as I'm leaving Hoped my pain would be enough reason I'll see you on the other side of the Blue Ridge sky But now I'm going Hate to tell you goodbye Say it takes a selfish man to leave on out from his old hometown Without saying why he's going But you can come take the rest of me Early in the morning Tell me your goodbyes Where I'm going I won't have these reminders of what I lost What was taken away from me And I hope you'll understand I was a broken man in my own hometown Need to find my own peace So, Goodbye Carolina, searched my whole life to find you I hate to leave you but I hope you'll know Where I'm going I'll be seeing you So hold my hand as I'm leaving Hoped my pain would be enough reason I'll see you on the other side of the Blue Ridge sky But now I'm going Hate to tell you goodbye So goodbye Carolina, searched my whole life to find you I hate to leave you but I hope you'll know Where I'm going I'll be seeing you I'll be seeing you I'll be seeing you
The Babyfaced singer with the voice of an "old soul" and the riffs of an old 70s Southern Rocker! When I first saw Marcus King was his version of this song - a friend had played this so I knew it - at the Grand Ole Opry I didn't expect him to look so young!
He's gonna probably take the industry by storm but if he chooses not to tangle himself up with big name corporate record labels that may try and coral him in to not being allowed to be himself. A legend in the making
Saw this EXCELLENT band at Dohney Blues Festival in Dana Point, CA last week and was completely blown away. This is the most exciting music since Leon Russell backed Joe Cocker. Good grief after listening to these guys I realized I have been starving for really good blues rock for years ! Excellent songs, totally excellent playing, and amazing vocals. Can't wait to see them again ! Truthfully, I think Marcus King gives Jimmy Page a run for his money. He changes keys and time signatures like changing his socks, but always brings you back just in time. Never seen anyone else do this except Page.
This song gave me the most life altering epiphany and it's exactly what I needed to hear. Listened to it a thousand times and sent it to a friend who contemplates suicide. The sadness of it really provides perspective. Thanks for great music. Don't stop.
Been waiting to see him live since I discovered him a couple of years ago. I can't wait for the show in Phoenix tomorrow night. This kid is 100% the real deal. He just fires on all cylinders and really hits me deep down in my heart. I swear, if they'd just give him a little radio play he'd be worldwide phenomenon. I've never turned anyone onto him who wasn't completely blown away. Thank you, Marcus, for restoring my faith in music and authentic artists at this late stage of my life.
These guys are riding a rocket ship right now! I sure hope they’re holding on tight, because I believe it’s going to be a hell of a long, fast ride! I’m just tickled that we all get a front-row seat!!!
I mean this with all due respect and a compliment. This dudes voice has some black in it. Like old school soul. He reminds me of a country bill withers just like an Octave higher. I love it. It's unique
Wow. . . great song, every part of it... great story. . . SO Human. So much to say about it but at the same time, it was so much more about what I felt in its message. . . Excellent song...😎👍
Dude, when this song came out, my home was stolen from me, and I thought I would have to leave South Carolina. I been here my entire life been other places but South Carolina is home.
This is why I love music. I love and play Metal and Rock, but when my brother suggested this one to me, I knew it'd be good. I love how good music can transcend your own personal tastes and move you just like the music you listen to.
Longtime fan from Sydney, Australia. The version of this you do at The Opry is one of the most outstanding live performances I have heard in my 54 years. Thanks Marcus, your humility and lack of ego are two inspiring qualities, all the best and hope to meet you in Sydney one day soon.
I saw them live with Zac Brown three nights ago. First time I’ve heard their name. Unbelievable. Sings like Stapleton and plays like BB King. All 21,000 people were blown away!
You would think that as a 70+ music lover I should have learned an important lesson. People, Please, listen to new music/musicians as often as you can. There are so many great surprises like Marcus King. Man, i’m glad i found him.
Good for you! *spread the word- so much young and worthy talent out there today!

Beautifully put. Toys with the emotions this one.
Same
Thank you Lord for good music. There is still hope.
I'm 38 and I'm 100% certain I will be listening to this song when I'm 83. Timeless song and voice.
Agreed. I’m 52, and I’m mainly a metal fan, death metal, actually, but when I heard Marcus King….Jesus. Such soul, such talent, such everything. Pardon my language, but he’s fucking incredible. This one and “Side Door” move something in me, I can’t explain it. Good stuff.
I’m a metal guy, too. There’s something metal AF about his soul. I hear it, too
Wow. I just heard this song for the first time tonight, I was memorized. Marcus sounds like he left a piece of his soul in this song. Love the grit in his voice in the higher notes. Thanks Marcus
Check out his performance of this song at the Grand Ole Opry. It’s amazing

Just Saw them in Cardiff last night. Was awesome, just glad they came to Wales.
Sad to say I'm 3 years late, but better late than never...what a voice what a song 😳
Thanks brother!
Joe Reitz I agree 100%! Could’t have said it better myself!
Joe Reitz absolutely
The Marcus King Band you guys gave me HOPE during one of the most trying times in my life. Your song about the polarization of Humanity should be played in every Art classroom across America! Amen! Hallelujah! #RyanALopez13
My sentiments exactly !
Carolina the Great Smokies my home my whole life. Ginseng pulling bare footed as a boy. I left Carolina after winning a protection order for my boys. Came home to the Suwannee music festival. First song I heard!! Signs are everywhere you just have to see them!
I honestly thought this was Chris Stapleton when I first heard it at work... Wow. I've always liked Marcus King but this is absolutely epic.
Same man I thought it was Chris Stapleton
Marcus King band actually opened for a Christ Stapleton concert I went to and that’s how I found them ❤
What a world we live in that this only has 500k views and some of that mumble rap shit get's billions.... but, in 10/20/30 years time, people will STILL be playing Marcus King....

Haven't listened to this song in a long time. It made me fucking cry again today.
Damn if I ain't been waiting on a band like this. Southern rock has been reborn. This song is amazing. Respect from Nc.
His voice does not belong to his face…he’s one of a kind 😊😊

Im so glad you made it man! I took guitar lessons from your dad as a kid and he talked about you all the time! I hope he’s still playing that same old wood guitar with the pinky groove 🤙
Can't wait to hear what Marcus King's voice sounds like when he's fifty. Legendary.
Marcus it's been years !!! I'm so proud of you. I still remember you knocking out gigs in downtown Greenville Before When it was all Starting.... Keep it up Your friends are watching and we are definitely proud !!!!!
Echo that , from Breezy Hill, SC. It's all about carrying the torch & brother, you make it brighter.
Why does it feel like this song has been with us forever? Only the greatest can do that!
This song reminds me of my son I lost at eleven and the way I feel now.
Won’t be reminded of what I lost or what’s been taken away from me! WOW!
Saw this guy last night with Zac brown. Never heard of him but a pleasant surprise.
I saw them Friday in Syracuse. First time for me too in seeing MK. They played a killer set - very impressive.

I would petition this to be South Carolina's new state song. Marcus King, you have done your home-state proud. Rock on to glory, brother.
The soul in his voice at 2:15 brought the hair up on my arms. Good grief, so young and so much talent. Well done. Thanks for sharing the vid.
That's his normal singing voice. I love it!
marty robbins It’s sad that people now in general have no talent and no good singing voices, But he has raw talent and an awesome voice.
Ghosts of Chris Stapleton in his voice but it’s still all his own. Gives me chills.
Perfect mix of music styles in this band. Gary Clark and them keeping the blues fresh and alive
Don't forget Derek Trucks
My boyfriend and I driving down I71 interstate singing this song together ❤
What a beautiful song. It was such a pleasure to hear it live in Paris. Please come back !
A cross between MTB, SRV and all of the other Southern Rock bands.
This old soul digs what this band offers up. 👍
I’m so mad at whoever broke this dudes heart. Only a broken heart can make a sound like this. Brother for the first time since my son died I cried listening to this song
He wrote in memory of a dear friend who committed suicide.
This song sad af. Love it
Such raw emotion coming through in the vocals! Love this band MKB!!
And he makes that glass slide "sing' as well

"Goodbye Carolina"
I dreamed of the day when I'd hold you in my arms again
Read you all the letters I wrote but never sent
Give you all the pieces of me
To put 'em back together
Put them back together again
Life has a way of writing your story for you
And the hero doesn't always get his girl
What if you could change the ending to the novel they been writing
Leave no resolution
So, Goodbye Carolina, searched my whole life to find you
I hate to leave you but I hope you'll know
Where I'm going I'll be seeing you
So hold my hand as I'm leaving
Hoped my pain would be enough reason
I'll see you on the other side of the Blue Ridge sky
But now I'm going
Hate to tell you goodbye
Say it takes a selfish man to leave on out from his old hometown
Without saying why he's going
But you can come take the rest of me
Early in the morning
Tell me your goodbyes
Where I'm going I won't have these reminders of what I lost
What was taken away from me
And I hope you'll understand I was a broken man in my own hometown
Need to find my own peace
So, Goodbye Carolina, searched my whole life to find you
I hate to leave you but I hope you'll know
Where I'm going I'll be seeing you
So hold my hand as I'm leaving
Hoped my pain would be enough reason
I'll see you on the other side of the Blue Ridge sky
But now I'm going
Hate to tell you goodbye
So goodbye Carolina, searched my whole life to find you
I hate to leave you but I hope you'll know
Where I'm going I'll be seeing you
I'll be seeing you
I'll be seeing you
That song is just raw to the soul
Those blues lines hit different 😮
The one great thing that came out of a recent breakup was this amazing man! Wish he would come to Cali!!❤️❤️
These guys have redeemed my faith in today's music....superb!
I just discovered you guys a few days ago And my husband and I are really wanting to see you guys! I'm already a huge fan! Much love from Georgia 😎
I think he’s going to be in Athens on February 22

I thought the same thing. And he has a voice that is just as amazing as his guitar work..✌
Got to hear him live in Raleigh last night. Wow
The guitar is straight nasty on this song 👌
This song gave me the most life altering epiphany and it's exactly what I needed to hear. Listened to it a thousand times and sent it to a friend who contemplates suicide. The sadness of it really provides perspective. Thanks for great music. Don't stop.

I saw MK Band with Chris Stapleton and Cobb in Orange Beach, AL a few weeks ago. I was wishing that Markus would've headlined the show.
Beautiful song
Been waiting to see him live since I discovered him a couple of years ago. I can't wait for the show in Phoenix tomorrow night. This kid is 100% the real deal. Holy Shit I just heard of this band. What a voice.
Truly soulful
I mean this with all due respect and a compliment. This dudes voice has some black in it. Like old school soul. He reminds me of a country bill withers just like an Octave higher. I love it. It's unique
Wow. . . great song, every part of it... great story. . . SO Human. So much to say about it but at the same time, it was so much more about what I felt in its message. . . Excellent song...😎👍

Longtime fan from Sydney, Australia. The version of this you do at The Opry is one of the most outstanding live performances I have heard in my 54 years. Thanks Marcus, your humility and lack of ego are two inspiring qualities, all the best and hope to meet you in Sydney one day soon.
