I was playing a gig at wings down under on main st Greenville. No one was there. I asked "where is everybody?" my partner said "they're all at the corner pocket watching this kid named Marcus King" I said "dang I bet that's Marvin's son" that was the first time I heard of him. He's great and we're proud of him! His skills are earned.
@@dillonbrown2956 not really, it's a weird scene.. I only made money when I was willing to play all the standard covers. People in Greenville are different than Ashville or even Spartanburg. In those towns they liked my originals. In Greenville you gotta play brown eyed girl. Or be as good as Marcus I guess.
@@maedhrosv8449 you are absolutely right! It must have been around 2012. Years run together when you're old and you wasted your time playing in dives every night. Marcus was a teenager whenever this happened. Wings down under was still open on main street.
Being from the UK, I had never really listened to much soul, country or blues music. I moved to Indiana about 6 years ago and bought a beater car to get me from A to B. The radio only had one station programmed and it was a country and soul station.. From that moment I knew I had been missing out for the past 30 years. Finding Marcus has been a gift too.. Seriously. Makes even the most stressful days easier.
Well, I just wept. I used to listen to this song laying in the dark back in the early 70's. With my limited knowledge of the world as a high school freshman living in rural Tennessee...I thought this was the saddest song I'd ever heard. And now, 50 years later, the words have more meaning. Amazing talent that Marcus. And Drew Smithers? Perfection. Thank you gentlemen. ~S
Absolutely bliss. Funny how these sad tunes can lift us all through these truly gifted musicians and the singer's of truth... Rock on Marcus and thanks again.
Haven’t really been interested in any artists for quite a few years until I just happened to see Marcus and Billy Strings on one of these videos about 6 months ago and was blown away, can’t get enough of their stuff. My guitars got dusted off and restrung, fingers are toughened up again and I’m having a blast! Just a guess but I think there are plenty of other people that might have done the same. Anyway, great video as usual, you younger guys are inspiring people to love this music once again. Thanks so much!
Marcus, Drew and Mike have done justice worthy for this timeless classic. Marcus' soulful voice complemented by Drew's lilting slide guitar licks and Mike's haunting piano riffs combine for a remarkable listening experience. Well done guys!
Jeez, this sound quality is insane, and their chemistry is so great. They sound like they have the same musical intuition as the legends. Wear good headphones when you watch the Carter videos!!!!!
This punched me right in the heart.. One of the two best guitarists I had the good fortune to call bandmates..Tim Healy..RIP.. used to call me “GC”…” Goodtime Charlie… this rendition brought back so many memories…❤️
T R U T H.. I’ve seen him 5 times from day 1 when he started touring NW.. He was 19 the 1st time I saw him.. little diff lineup as if the present. But they Rock Live regardless of the lineup! If you haven’t seen them definitely go check them out LIVE
Absolutely phenomenal. Seems like Marcus King just gets better and better all the time. It’s about time someone like him came along to fill the void being left by the greats that are moving on.
I love Marcus King, he’s got soul and he’s forging a path that will make him a legend one day. Drew Smithers I find to be underrated because he’s got good feel, man. This is the first time I’ve heard Mike Runyon but I dig his playing, man. Great rendition, great playing.
May just be the greatest cover I have ever heard. I cannot wait to see him at Bourbon and Beyond. Of all the artists, I believe he may just steal the festival.
Wow...This song was hitting me at the right point by the wrong time, but better even to remember that ol' guitars in the hands of ol' souls having young fingers to understand the care of restorations, to let them flowing over the eons of times. Good songs and their mediums will never die.
I saw him on his current tour a couple weeks ago and was blown away. So genuine, driven, and passionate about his music. The whole band was incredibly tight, 100% what you see is what you get, he's got a great head on his shoulders and a very promising future ahead of him.
Charley Crockett& Marcoos King been saying his name for 5 years and Charley for 1, absoloutly no doubt in my mind there is incredible music out there. I’ll be Memphis Seeing Whiskey Myers

This songs on repeat until I finish my 6 pack and these two blunts. This heals me.
I wish Carter’s would release digital singles of these sessions
Yeah I wish this recording was on Spotify
I haven't heard a bad tune from this kid and others on here. I love it it would be the first cd I bought in years
Screen record on your iphone to mp3 conversion app. Then buy a carter’s t-shirt to support the cause ;)

Thank you Dad for taking me to see this amazing talent live in concert!
That’s one cool ass dad !!

One of the most beautiful songs ever (thank you Danny O'Keefe) wonderfully arranged and played. Greatstuff!

Well said
I love this version. Marcus' voice captures the pain and despair contained in the lyrics. And that slide guitar really sets the rainy day tone.
Garth Brooks version is the worst.
So in love with this version of the song. I grew up with this song. Marcus and team did it justice.

Spot on my brother. Rock on.
At 43 I hadn’t been to a concert or inspired enough to go to one in a while. Made sure I saw him when they rolled through. Wasn’t disappointed.
Same! We saw him play last September at a music festival and had never heard him before then. He's incredible live if you get the chance to see him.

This is a fantastic rendition of my song I play when I'm thinking of my pops, Charles/Chuck/Charlie Moss...RIP

That 335 is a show-stopper.
My soul has been cleansed
The King is gone but thank God for Marcus King. Truly, thank God for this young man. We all should be truly grateful for beautiful souls like him.
I've said it before and it's worth saying again, I would buy an album of his guitar shop songs. Tremendous
Marcus you are the King . ! . Thank you for the blues, country, blue grass, whatever you want to call it . . . I'm in
This dude has more talent in his pinky than 90% of musicians today have
His kinda talent is more rightfully called Soul…👍🏼

Ironically he hardly uses his pinky to play lol.
Oh, I resent that. This dude has a lot less talent than I do.
Thank you algorithm, love seeing this classic being embraced today.
This is the best cover I've ever heard of this classic song. Fantastic playing and singing!
Great song
Charlie Crockett’s cover is better, but this one is great as well.
Dwight Yoakum does a nice cover also
This is definitely the best version of this song. Nobody even comes close
Absolutely phenomenal. Seems like Marcus King just gets better and better all the time. It’s about time someone like him came along to fill the void being left by the greats that are moving on.
Met Drew Smithers last week in Oxford after the show. Truly the kindest most down to earth man I’ve ever talked to
Love this old tune, so well done😢
Digging the Oak Ridge Boys hat
This man might be my favorite contemporary guitarist
Sounds awesome guys ⚡ I'd love to hear a Marcus King / Charley Crockett version someday * 🙏
I see Markus King, i press like.
Marcus gives this classic just the right amount of sadness. ❤
Very nice performance !!!!!! Greetings from Europe , Estonia.
A sleeper talent. Sounds so original... and pure for a change
My man Runyon! Well done boys!
I was in the store the day they were recording. So awesome to hear, even through the door!!
I live for these Marcus King videos
Awesome !! Played this with my Dad's country band in my early years
Love Marcus and the music he's playing. Hope to see him again live soon. Very talented kid who only gets better.
Firebird with the glass slide. That's a classic combo right there.

Such a fine solo at 3:12, just flowing from sure fingers and trembling soul, on top of already fine performance, well done gentlemen!
Indeed. Got goosebumps from that solo.
what pedal do you think he's using?
Love this rendition Marcus and wow to Drew and Mike for your instrumental genius. Very well played.
